Deceptive design online : A study of the occurrence and context of deceptive design patterns in Swedish e-commerce (English)
Abstract [en]

This study investigates the presence of deceptive design patterns on Swedish e-commerce websites through a deductive and descriptive approach, aiming to map and identify such patterns. The background of the study is the assumption that deceptive design patterns are commonly found on Swedish e-commerce sites, based on previous research in the field. The research questions focus on which deceptive design patterns are most common, in what contexts they are used, and whether there are differences in their occurrence across different e-commerce sectors. Using a document study methodology, data was collected directly from selected websites to reflect a typical consumer's experience. A combination of qualitative content analysis and quantitative data compilation was used to analyse the results. The study included a manual review of 38 e-commerce sites. These sites were selected based on traffic statistics of the 100 most visited e-commerce sites in Sweden. Fifteen specific deceptive design patterns were examined in the study. The results show that 97.37 % of the reviewed websites contained at least one deceptive design pattern, with Preselection/Bad Default being the most common. This pattern was primarily observed in the checkout process, where payment or delivery options were preselected. The study also highlights that the occurrence of these patterns varies between different e-commerce sectors.

Abstract [sv]

15 specifika vilseledande designmönster undersöktes i studien.
