Abstract [sv]

Bakgrund: Allt fler drabbas av demenssjukdom till följd av en ökad ålder. Eftersom befolkningen växer blir det även fler personer som är yngre än 65 år när de drabbas av demenssjukdom. Förhållandena för en yngre person med demenssjukdom ser annorlunda ut än för en äldre person. De har andra behov som behöver tillgodoses för bibehållen livskvalitet. Vi vill med detta examensarbete belysa vikten av meningsfulla aktiviteter för yngre personer med demenssjukdom från vårdpersonalens erfarenheter med förhoppning om att det kan leda till en ökad personcentrerad vård och fortsatt utveckling inom detta område.

Syfte: Att beskriva vårdpersonalens erfarenheter om meningsfulla aktiviteter för yngre personer med demenssjukdom på särskilt boende.

Metod: En kvalitativ intervjustudie med induktiv ansats utfördes på nio personer som arbetar med yngre personer med demenssjukdom på särskilt boende. Totalt fyra boenden valdes ut där endast personer bor som insjuknat i demenssjukdom vid ung ålder. Resultatet analyserades med kvalitativ innehållsanalys. Intervjuerna transkriberades och analyserades med en manifest innehållsanalys.

Resultat: Resultatet visar att aktiviteter för yngre personer med demenssjukdom behöver individanpassas för att bli meningsfulla. Aktiviteter som är meningsfulla ger ökat välmående och livskvalitet. Att lyckas anpassa aktiviteten är utmanande för vårdpersonal och det krävs stor kunskap om bemötande för att kunna skapa personcentrerad aktivitet som upplevs meningsfull. Meningsfulla aktiviteter som inte individanpassas riskerar att ge ökad beteendemässiga och psykiska symtom vid demens.

Slutsats: Yngre personer med demenssjukdom upplever ökad livskvalitet om personal lyckas skapa personcentrerade aktiviteter som upplevs meningsfulla.

Abstract [en]

Background: An increasing number of people are suffering from dementia because of advancing age. As the population grows, more individuals who are younger than 65 years will tend to develop dementia. The circumstances for a younger person with dementia differ from those of an older person. The needs differ from what an older person needs to maintain quality of life. With this dissertation, we aim to highlight the importance of meaningful activities from the experiences of healthcare professionals, hoping that it may lead to increased person-centered care and further development in this field.

Aim: To describe healthcare professionals' experiences regarding meaningful activities for younger individuals with dementia in specialized accommodation.

Method: A qualitative interview study with an inductive approach was conducted with nine healthcare professionals working with younger individuals with dementia. Four residences were selected, housing only persons who developed dementia at a young age. The results were analysed using qualitative content analysis. The interviews were transcribed and analysed using a manifest content analysis.

Results: The result shows that activities for younger people with dementia need individualization to become meaningful. Meaningful activities enhance well-being and quality of life. It is challenging for healthcare workers to successfully adapting the activity to suit the person. It requires extensive knowledge of communication to be able to establish individualized activities that are meaningful. Meaningful activities that are not personalized risk increasing behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia.

Conclusions: Younger individuals with dementia experience increased quality of life if personnel succeed in personifying the activity to make it meaningful.
