Psychosocial support in pediatric palliative care- a team approach : A qualitative study of the experiences of healthcare (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: In 2021 the first national care program for pediatric palliative care was published in Sweden. The care programme states that children with severe illness and their families should have access to psychsocial support. Previous research show that there is a knowledge gap regarding when psychosocial support is offered and what the support consists of.

Aim: The aim of this study was to explore healthcare professional’s views on psychosocial support for children with palliative care needs and their families.

Method: This is a qualitative study where the data material was collected through both focus group interviews and individual interviews which were analyzed using thematic analysis.

Results: This study shows that psychosocial support in pediatric palliative care is perceived by healthcare professionals as a team approach: All healthcare professionals can identify needs, offer and implement psychosocial support in daily care, but specialized psychosocial support is best provided by the healtcare counselor.
