Crime, support and power : A critical discourse analysis about how social services is depicted in the media (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to explore how the social services work with children and adolescents were described in media and how the idea of social services was constructed from a social constructionism perspective. Former research showed that social services were often described in a negative way in media. The material was newspaper articles from two Swedish newspapers published between February 1st and March 31rd 2024. The method that was used was Faircloughs three-dimensional critical discourse analysis and semiotic analysis for analysis of the pictures. The theoretical outset was social constructionism. The results showed that the discourses that were constructed in the material was crime, support and power. The work of social services was mostly described from flaws and often described related to crimes. Social workers were not participating in constructing the discourses, instead it was only other people, both professionals and private citizens, that spoke about social services.
