On the 29 of December 2023, the South African government brought Israel before the International Court of Justice with the accusation of genocide crimes. This thesis aims to analyze the perception of the two major South African newspapers of this government’s decision, and the reasons that led the government to pursue this condemnation. The South African media landscape, due to the political and social specificity of its context, had always been complicated and stratified, mainly organized around the concepts of language and ethnicity. To understand the still-present interconnection between politics and the press in South Africa, the thesis will provide a media case study: a thematic analysis of articles from the Sunday Times and the Daily Sun newspapers, depicted through the two keywords of apartheid and genocide, regarding the topic chosen. The purpose is to demonstrate how the media's perception of this governmental decision is shaped by this interrelation between media, language, and politics in South Africa.
