The Gricean Perspective on the Cartoon Mafalda : The Cooperative Principle and Its Relevance in Comic strips (English)
Abstract [en]

The aim of this qualitative theoretical study is to investigate the impact on Grice’s (1975) studies in comics. We have used Grice's (1975) theory of cooperative principles as a theoretical starting point. The material consists of comic strips from the Argentinian series Mafalda published between the years 1964-1973. Comics are not only part of the spoken concept, but they are also a form of narrative that often uses exaggerated and stylised dialogues. The comic has different functions and can, for example, help the reader to understand the development of the story, the role of the characters as well as having a narrative function.

Comics are often texts with an open interpretation and therefore allow for several readings. In addition to being fun, the graphic joke can change our perception of the world and allow us to share some criticism linked to a specific event in the real world. Grice's (1975) theories of conversation have worked well in conducting the study and have provided a clear picture of humour in comics. In this context, Grice's (1975) theory is arguably a useful and interesting tool for analysing communication in comics and the implicit meanings generated in conversations.
