Narrative Empathy in the Novel : A Comparative Study of Flaubert’s Madame Bovary and Marguerite Duras’s The Lover (English)
Abstract [fr]

Abstract [en]

This study offers a comparative analysis of two novels, Madame Bovary (1856) by Gustave Flaubert and The Lover (1984) by Marguerite Duras, in which the question of fictional empathy is explored, as defined by Suzanne Keen. The analysis is based on a structural approach focusing on the narrative techniques, based on Keen’s idea that these have an important role to play in arousing the reader’s empathy. The main aim of the study is to understand the effect of different narrative techniques for the reader's emotional immersion. To achieve this objective, the study will first identify certain narrative techniques adopted in the novels to allow the reader, on the one hand, to understand the environment in which the characters evolve and, on the other hand, to access the thoughts and hesitations of the characters and to identify with them or to distance oneself from them. The study seeks to demonstrate this through a structural analysis of Madame Bovary and The Lover using narrative theory, and more particularly Genette’s model, as a theoretical framework.
