Abstract [en]
The working conditions in the equine sector have been described as labor-intensive with physical, mental, and emotional strain. Much of the work tasks are still performed manually with old-fashioned equipment. Thus, the work continues to involve heavy lifting, awkward work postures, and repetitive work, all identified risk factors for developing musculoskeletal disorders. Furthermore, studies have shown a high prevalence of musculoskeletal complaints for employees at riding schools.
The overall aim is to increase the knowledge of postural exposure and related risk factors in the equine sector to reduce hazardous exposure, which could reduce musculoskeletal symptoms and work-related sick leave within horse-related occupations in the long run.
The study will be conducted at nine riding schools in Sweden. All riding school employees are asked to answer a questionnaire covering questions about the psychosocial work environment. Full-day postural exposure will be registered for some employees using the Smart Workwear System (Wergonic AB, Stockholm, Sweden). The system is designed as a t-shirt with embedded pockets where inertial measurement units are placed, registering arms and trunk angles and a chest band for heart rate measurements. The researchers will register work tasks, stress rates and perceived physical exertion.
The data collection is ongoing, and preliminary results will be presented and discussed at the conference. By understanding the full-day postural exposure of the employees and relating it both to the work environment (physical, organizational and social) and the employees’ workability, measures to promote decent and sustainable working conditions can be identified.
