The aim of the study was to explore nine nurses, seven women and two men, lived experiences related to HIV/AIDS and practise related to nursing care for patients’ whit HIV/AIDS in Dar es Salaam Tanzania. The nurses’ experiences were revealed trough in-depth interviews where the nurses narrated their stories. The interviews were analyzed using a phenomenological-hermeneutic approach. The analysis of the data resulted in four different themes: (1) the chosen path in life the nurse profession, (2) the devotion and the compassion of caring, (3 sacrifice the self for a greater good, (4) ignorance, and lack of education. Findings showed a great devotion to the nurse profession and good attitudes towards HIV positive patients. Furthermore, the nurses’faced a hard reality involving grief and a well justified fear of the HIV infection. The belief of education and responsibility as a tool to be used against the HIV epidemic was strong. The interviewed nurses also requested supplementary education to satisfy their needs of more specific education regarding HIV/AIDS.
