: Female Leads in American Teen Sitcom – Empowering or Unattainable Ideals? (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study sets out to examine the way in which young female title characters are portrayed in teen sitcoms, primarily on the channel Nickelodeon, and in what ways they could or could not contribute to the empowerment of their young female audience. The study is a qualitative content analysis based on the premiss that the characters, through their "visibility" contribute to Girl Power as a discourse. Furthermore, it seeks to investigate if there could be any negative aspects of their characterization which could contribute to an ideal image of "perfection" that a lot of women feel a need to live up to. The study shows that the characters are portrayed as strong, independent, driven, intelligent, responsible and good girls, and that this could be seen as positive in the context. However, the lack of flaws together with a resistance to reference the patriarchal society they live in could potentially result in a characterization that places responsibility for individual success on the viewer. This, in turn, is a phenomenon that could potentially serve as both empowering and suppressing depending on the preconditions of the recipient.
