Syftet med denna litteraturstudie är att undersöka vilken skönlitteratur som lästs på gymnasiet och hur det litterära urvalet och litteraturläsning legitimerats. För att besvara frågeställningen har material valts ut genom manuell sökning som beskriver litterär kanon, historiska kontexter, bildningsideal och läroplaner och läroböcker. Undersökningen sträcker sig över större delen av 1900-talet och visar dels på en kontinuitet ifråga om litterärt urval dels på förändringar när det gäller legitimering.

The purpose of this paper is to study the selection of literary fiction of the Swedish senior high school, and the grounds for its legitimatization. In order to answer the questions asked in the paper, material has been gathered through manual searches in academic databases covering topics of include literary canon, historical contexts, educational ideals, curriculums, and textbooks. The study covers the lion´s share of the 20th century and depicts both a high degree of continuum regarding the composition of the literary canon, and changes concerning its legitimization.
