Student thesisAlternative title
Quality of life of children diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia- a literature review (English)
Abstract [sv]
Bakgrund: Akut lymfatisk leukemi utgör 80% av barnleukemier. Behandlingen
Slutsats: Barn under behandling upplevde sämre livskvalitet.
Abstract [en]
Background: Acute lymphoblastic leukemia accounts for 80 % of child
leukemia’s. Treatment is mainly chemotherapy in various combinations, which
more or less have side effects that affects the child. More recently research has led
to increased rate of survival, which means other challenges to satisfy the needs of
children and promote the child's perspective and perception of his/hers quality of
life.
Aim: To describe the quality of life in children diagnosed with acute
lymphoblastic leukemia.
Method: A literature review based on 15 scientific articles by quantitative and/or
qualitative approach from the databases CINAHL and PubMed.
Results: Children who were under treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia had
impact on their mental and physical quality of life aswell as their sleep. It was
normal for the children to have sleep disturbances, fatigue, exhaustion, worry and
anxiety, which affected the child's perceived quality of life. The quality of life
were mainly affected initially at the treatment but were improved within time,
despite the negative experiences of illness and treatment.
Conclusion: Children under treatment experienced poorer quality of life.
Gradually during the time of treatment the experience in quality of life improved
and at the end of treatment most had reached a similar quality of life as children of
the same age.
