    Abstract [sv]

Aesthetics in embodied task design in mathematics2023Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) research emphasises interdisciplinary approaches to developing skills needed for the 21st century. In this paper, we explore three aesthetically rich mathematical activities involving dance and bodily performance (e.g., creative body postures) with 6-year-old students. Supported by an embodied perspective of task design and a Deweyan view of aesthetics, we argue that a high degree of bodily engagement and a high degree of task integration allow space for creativity and imagination that may involve aesthetic dimensions. Specifically, we argue that body postures, bodily rotation, rhythm, and fluency in composite sequences of movement may connect art and mathematics in a way that treats the students as active creators of aesthetic experiences, in contrast to other STEAM approaches that do not consider bodily performance as a way of connecting art and mathematics.

A Study of Students’ Ability to Solve Text-Based Mathematical Problems with Irrelevant or Superfluous Information2008In: Mathematical Views, MAVI 14: Strobl/Salzburg, Austria, May 2008, 2008Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A limited quantitative survey has been performed in order to study the capability of students to solve text-based mathematical problems containing irrelevant or superfluous information, as well as their ability to scrutinize text and sort out the relevant information. The students took a written test with text-based problems of different amount of irrelevant or superfluous information. The capability of understanding such problems was investigated versus degree of maturity and gender. Obtained results indicate a noticeable correlation between the occurrence of irrelevant or superfluous information and ability of solving the problems. Furthermore, the results show that the degree of maturity, expressed in terms of age, has a clear influence on the results. This study has not revealed any significant difference between genders as regards ability of sorting out the relevant information.

Influence of Student’s Attitudes and Beliefs on the Ability of Solving Mathematical Problems with Irrelevant Information2009In: Beliefs and attitudes in mathematics education: new research results / [ed] Jürgen Maasz and Wolfgang Schlöglmann, Rotterdam: Sense Publishers , 2009, p. 165-178Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

A limited quantitative survey has been performed in order to study how attitudes, beliefs and feelings of students may influence the ability of solving text-based mathematical problems containing irrelevant information. The survey is also analyzing their capability of scrutinizing texts and sorting out relevant information.

The students took a written test with text-based problems of different amount of irrelevant information. The capability of understanding such problems was investigated versus degree of mathematical maturity and gender. Obtained results indicate a noticeable correlation between the occurrence of irrelevant information and the ability of solving the problems. Furthermore, attitudes, beliefs, and the degree of mathematical maturity, expressed in terms of age, have a clear influence on the results. On the other hand, this study has not revealed any significant difference between genders as regards the capability of solving text-based problems with irrelevant information.

    Abstract [en]

How does children's participation in a problem-solving project affect their view on what it means to be taught and learn mathematics?2023Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The mathematics teaching young children encounter affects not only the mathematics they are given the opportunity to learn but also their view of what mathematics is, how mathematics is taught and how they view their ability to learn mathematics. In this paper, an Educational Design Research study on problem solving and problem posing with Swedish six-year-olds will serve as an example when we elaborate on how children’s participation in education may affect their views of what it means to be taught and to learn mathematics. We do so by comparing drawings, of mathematics classrooms made of children from eight classes of which four participated in the study. The results indicate a reform-oriented and more diverse view of content and form in the drawings of the children participating in the intervention.

Fair sharing and division – mathematical reasoning regarding integers and fractions in preschool and preschool class2024In: Proceedings of Cerme 13 / [ed] Paul Drijvers, Csaba Csapodi, Hanna Palmér, Katalin Gosztonyi and Eszter Kónya, Alfréd Rényi Institute of Mathematics, Budapest, Hungary and ERME , 2024, p. 2096-2103Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper identifies and discusses children’s mathematical reasoning in preschool and preschool class when they work with a fair sharing case. The case came from a selection of cases designed to promote collective mathematical as well as ethical reasoning. Data comes from six children’s work when sharing four paper biscuits between three soft toys, first when the children were five years old and then, a year later, when they were six years old. The results show that their reasoning, both when they were five and six, used mathematical and ethical arguments. In preschool class, the students were able to use each other’s arguments in collective reasoning to identify, predict, and verify their reasoning. The students began to measure the fraction parts of a remainder but could not evaluate the conclusion with respect to what is aspects for division; equal numbers and equal size. The results also signal that teacher’s input, of posing evaluating questions, appears to stimulate the reasoning.

Resources for planning and teaching mathematics: A Swedish upper-secondary school case study2023In: Journal of Curriculum Studies, ISSN 0022-0272, E-ISSN 1366-5839, p. 1-19Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study investigates resource use by upper-secondary mathematics teachers in the context of collaborative planning. A thematic content analysis is conducted on audio-recorded teacher discussions in order to find out what resources are used by the teachers, how they are used, and for what reasons. The findings show that although teachers use a variety of resources to support their instructional enactment as well as instructional design, there is a difference in how they use different resources to support different planning practices. For instructional design, curriculum resources provide support for the mathematical content, while social resources, self-generated documents, and cognitive resources provide support for the design of instructional activities. Authority is given by teachers to curriculum resources, but conflicts of authority emerge in discussions, when teachers’ abilities to exert their agency are not supported by curriculum resources. We discuss the findings in relation to authority and resource use, as well as for established conceptualizations of resources. The findings bear practical implications for the design of curriculum resources.

Feedback II: Hur feedback i form av feedbackfrågor påverkar elevers resonerande vid matematisk problemlösning2018Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

If students are to build knowledge, it is important to connect disciplinary knowledge to students’ everyday knowledge when teaching. In this study, the relationship between disciplinary- and everyday knowledge in subject-teaching is analysed, based on the semantic dimensions used in Legitimation Code Theory. Un-packing disciplinary concepts through concrete examples implies a shift towards a context-dependent everyday knowledge, while re-packing them entails a shift towards disciplinary abstractions and context-independent generalizations. Over time these shifts constitute so-called semantic waves argued to facilitate students´ knowledge building. Earlier research suggest that the form of these semantic waves can differ between school-subjects. Therefore, this article examines semantic waves in two contrasting subjects – Mathematics and Social Science Education, aiming at a better understanding of how and why semantic waves differ. The results reveal that the forms of semantic waves differ between the two subjects. In Mathematics, when teaching different geometrical concepts, the semantic shifts through un-packing and re-packing were frequent and evenly distributed. When teaching about pricing and household in Social Science, un-packing activities dominated, making shifts biased towards everyday knowledge. These differences are discussed in terms of semantic waves constituting a different pulse when making knowledge-building possible in Mathematics and Social Science.

    Abstract [sv]

Vilka uttrycksformer?2.

    Abstract [sv]

Exploring the presence of test anxiety and its relation to mathematical achievement in a sample of grade 32012In: Skrifter från Svensk förening för matematikdidaktisk forskning, ISSN 1651-3274, p. 151-160Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The present study aims at exploring if a sample of Swedish grade 3 pupils reported any test anxiety and whether there were any relations to performance in different mathematical areas. Overall, test anxiety explained 20% of the variance for the total mathematical score, with the subscale “thoughts” as the significant predictor. The model of test anxiety also explained Number understanding, Mass and Time, Patterns, and Mathematical problems; however Mental arithmetic and Written arithmetic algorithms were not significantly explained by the model. Test anxiety seems not to be a major problem in this sample; still, significant negative correlations were found, which likely might influence the pupils in some aspects.

Lärares deltagande i praktiknära forskning2023Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Disciplined by tests2015In: Nordisk matematikkdidaktikk, NOMAD: [Nordic Studies in Mathematics Education], ISSN 1104-2176, Vol. 20, no 1, p. 55-75Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article reports on a Swedish research project on the reintroduction of national tests in mathematics for nine- to ten-year-old pupils. Data were collected over a period of three years (2010-2012) by video recording test situations in different classrooms and by conducting video-stimulated recall interviews with children. The aim is to explore and analyse the testing situation and how it creates different positions for children. We conclude that discourses of testing, caring and competition, sometimes strengthening and sometimes shadowing each other and thereby, produce knowledge in children about success and failure in mathematics, positioning children as ‘winners’ or ‘losers’. The tests are interpreted as a technology – a form of disciplinary power that functions at the level of the body (Foucault, 1980).

    Abstract [sv]

2. Vilken matematik synliggörs i leken? 3.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

A reason to believe: beliefs as an influence on students task solving2008Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Upper secondary students’ task solving reasoning was analysed, with a focus on what grounds they had for different strategy choices and conclusions. Beliefs were identified and connected with the reasoning that took place. The results indicate that beliefs have an impact on the central decisions made during task solving. Three themes stand out: safety, expectation and motivation.

On Aspects of Mathematical Reasoning: Affect and Gender2009Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis explores two aspects of mathematical reasoning: affect and gender. I started by looking at the reasoning of upper secondary students when solving tasks. This work revealed that when not guided by an interviewer, algorithmic reasoning, based on memorising algorithms which may or may not be appropriate for the task, was predominant in the students reasoning. Given this lack of mathematical grounding in students reasoning I looked in a second study at what grounds they had for different strategy choices and conclusions. This qualitative study suggested that beliefs about safety, expectation and motivation were important in the central decisions made during task solving.  But are reasoning and beliefs gendered? The third study explored upper secondary school teachers conceptions about gender and students mathematical reasoning. In this study I found that upper secondary school teachers attributed gender symbols including insecurity, use of standard methods and imitative reasoning to girls and symbols such as multiple strategies especially on the calculator, guessing and chance-taking were assigned to boys. In the fourth and final study I found that students, both male and female, shared their teachers view of rather traditional feminities and masculinities. Remarkably however, this result did not repeat itself when students were asked to reflect on their own behaviour: there were some discrepancies between the traits the students ascribed as gender different and the traits they ascribed to themselves. Taken together the thesis suggests that, contrary to conceptions, girls and boys share many of the same core beliefs about mathematics, but much work is still needed if we should create learning environments that provide better opportunities for students to develop beliefs that guide them towards well-grounded mathematical reasoning.

Metodiska refleksjoner om design forsknig i barnehagen2023Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [no]

Online mathematics enrichment in regular classes2023Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In mixed-ability classrooms that are common in Swedish upper-secondary school, as well as in other Nordic countries, particularly gifted learners (Skolverket, 2015) are taught alongside all other students (Mellroth et al., 2021) leaving individual teachers with limited time to create enrichment. In what way can enrichment offered online, parallel to regular classes, be used to support the learning development of these learners? In a small-scale project, upper-secondary school students were offered an asynchronous online enrichment program. The program was led by a specialist lecturer at the school (second author) who started by a short meeting individually with each student (self-nominated or identified by their regular teacher). Then, a task aiming to challenge the specific student was uploaded to the student’s individual OneNote. For some tasks, students could choose to reveal guiding questions further, the chat function could be used to pose questions. Once completed, the student uploaded the solution and notified the lecturer who then uploaded a new task and afterwards provided feedback on the solution. The students were allowed to work with the tasks during regular mathematics classes but decided themselves on the pace and timing. The flexibility of the program offered the students an opportunity to adjust to their own needs and desire (Mellroth & Szabo, 2022). Some students worked on a regular basis with the tasks; others only occasionally. Thus, the daily challenge (Rogers, 2007) was offered continuously and consistently and the autonomy of the students (e.g., Leikin & Sriraman, 2017; Szabo, 2017) was accounted for. The students could either write their solutions directly in OneNote, or upload pictures of handwritten solutions. For the lecturer it gave the opportunity to give detailed and personalized feedback. Consistent with research stating that these students gain specifically from straightforward feedback (Leikin & Sriraman, 2017; Szabo, 2017). The online environment also enabled to effectively offer instructional differentiation as suggested by Szabo (2017) as the lecturer easily could adapt comments or offer alternative solutions despite the students going through the program at a different pace. In-depth interviews with the participating students are planned, to investigate their perceptions of stimuli and support through the online enrichment program. Leikin, R., & Sriraman, B. Five minutes: Young students' understanding of time2023Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The focus of this paper is on young students’ understanding of time which is hardly studied. In the presented study, Swedish 6-year-olds first worked on a task about estimating time and after that they posed their own tasks about time. The research questions concern what aspects of time come to light when 6-year-olds (1) estimate the time needed for specific activities and (2) pose tasks related to time When estimating time, the arguments given by the students were based on previous experiences, personal situations, and emotions. Sometimes more than one of these were used in the same line of argumentation. The tasks posed by the students were related to estimation of a set time, estimation of a time given a specific activity, using a timer, point-of-time, and time as a context. Our study suggests estimation and measurement of time as a suitable content to enlarge students’ understanding of time in addition to the more common focus on ‘telling the time’.

Elevers möjlighet till reflektion i matematikundervisningen: En studie i grunskolans årskurs 92013Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Research presented in the literature study show the significant value of reflection in the learning process. The overview also highlights activities that encourage and inhibit students’ reflection. The aim of this study is to examine whether and how students in Swedish school, grade 9, are stimulated to use reflection in mathematics education. This was conducted through a qualitative study, with essentially lesson observations as the main method and teacher interviews as supporting method. Teaching activities that may have a positive or negative effect on students’ ability to reflect have been identified in the process and analysis of the research material and are presented in the result chapter. The results show that although teachers express a positive view on metacognition and reflective approach, such situations occur to a limited extent. Common in teachers’ lessons are sequences that could stimulate reflection if appropriate actions as follow up had been taken. The result of the study could make teachers aware of what kind of activities that support reflection. It may also convey the importance of the fact that pupils need to be taught and subjected to a teaching practice that continually requires the presence of reflection.

A multi-objective chicken swarm optimization algorithm based on dual external archive with various elites2023In: Applied Soft Computing, ISSN 1568-4946, E-ISSN 1872-9681, Vol. 133, article id 109920Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Multi-objective optimization problems (MOPs) that widely exist in real world concern all optimal solutions compromised among multiple objectives. Chicken swarm optimization algorithm derived from emergent behaviors of organisms provides an effective way for handling MOPs. To speed up convergence and improve uniformity of Pareto-optimal solutions, a multi-objective chicken swarm optimization algorithm based on dual external archives and boundary learning strategy (MOCSO-DABL) is proposed in this paper. Dual external archives are employed to distinguish and choose two types of elite solutions, with the purpose of more effectively guiding individual evolution. A boundary learning strategy guides the chickens to learn from boundary individuals in the later stage of evolution. Moreover, fast non-dominated sorting is adopted to establish the hierarchical social structure of a chicken population, and learning strategies of roosters, hens and chicks are improved to meet the requirements of MOPs. Experimental results on 14 benchmark functions show that the proposed MOCSO-DABL outperforms other five state-of-the-art algorithms significantly.
