    Abstract [en]

Background: According to the National Board of Health and Welfare, many older adults still lack influence over decisions affecting their lives. The Social Services Act emphasizes respecting the individual's right to self-determination and their ability to influence services provided. Despite this, previous research shows a lack of participation in society. Aim: This study aimed to explore how social workers promote participation in meetings with elderly individuals during the assistance process, as well as identify the opportunities and challenges social workers experience in promoting participation. Method: The study used semi-structured interviews analyzed through thematic analysis. Results: The results show that social workers strive to promote the participation and autonomy of elderly individuals within elderly care. Despite their positive intentions, they face challenges such as influence from relatives and time constraints, which hinder elderly individuals from fully participating in the assistance process.

Partner care, gender equality, and ageing in Spain and Sweden2017In: International Journal of Ageing and Later Life, E-ISSN 1652-8670, Vol. 11, no 1, p. 69-89Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We used national surveys to study how older persons’ changing household patterns influence the gender balance of caregiving in two countries with distinct household structures and cultures, Spain and Sweden. In both countries, men and women provide care equally often for their partner in couple-only households. This has become the most common household type among older persons in Spain and prevails altogether in Sweden. This challenges the traditional dominance of young or middle-aged women as primary caregivers in Spain. In Sweden, many caregivers are old themselves. We focus attention to partners as caregivers and the consequences of changing household structures for caregiving, which may be on the way to gender equality in both countries, with implications for families and for the public services.

    Abstract [en]

Whatever happened, happened. Some notes on inner logic, especially in organizations

The notion that social events partly arise as a consequence of inner logic, i.e. that patterns and structures emerge outside of, or even in opposition against, plans and goals is a common element in social science. Inner logic is a summary term for social processes developing autonomously, i.e. without any individual or group intending them. Organizations quite often contain inner-logic processes. If, as this author maintains, fruitful organization theory has to build on rationalistic assumptions, how then do we handle instances of inner logic? A first step may be to break up the traditional link between structuralism and functionalism, maintaining the former and rejecting the latter. Organizations are intentionally dynamic, i.e. depend on order and predictability. To the extent that inner-logic processes appear in organizations, they should be analysed as confrontations between opposing rationalities rather than as spontaneous reactions of a ”system” . Also, frequently recurring organizational forms such as hierarchy are more fruitfully regarded as e.g. transaction-cost outcomes rather than as functional responses to system needs. Rationalism and structuralism are compatible, rationalism and functionalism are not.

Max Weber in Freiburg. On migration, disembedding and social change

This article sets out to introduce the central topics in Max Weber’s inauguration lecture in Freiburg. It is argued that the central, but largely implicit, argument in Weber’s lecture concerns the transformation from a patriarchal to a capitalist mode of employment. Upon this interpretation, Max Weber’s objective is to explain specific migration processes in terms of a configuration of causes, where the social disembedding of rural labour is the key factor.

    Abstract [en]

    Weber, causality and infinity

While it is widely acknowledged that Max Weber was a neo-kantian of some sort, comparatively little has been done to trace down how this affects other parts of his work. This article argues that Weber’s theory of causality can be viewed as an answer to problems evolving from his neo-kantian framework. The aim of the article becomes twofold. First, to give an exposition of Weber’s theory of causality, and second to use this piece of theory as an example of how parts of Weber’s methodology are designed to solve problems posed by the neo-kantian framework. The neo-kantian framework referred to can be summarized in the theses that (I) reality offers an infinite plenitude, and (II) that there is nothing in reality itself that can present us with its interpretation. Taken together, these theses result in the necessity for the subject to make a selection from the infinite reality. These theses are applied to the problem of selecting causes from the infinite causal chain. In order to solve this problem, Weber takes recourse to the adequate cause theory, a variant of jurisprudential theory founded by Johannes von Kries. The last part of the article gives an exposition of some of the basic characteristics and consequences of adequate cause theory.

    Abstract [en]

Subjugated knowledges and the possibilities of genealogy

The article explores the possibilities of “voicing” marginalized subjects by analyzing letters written by female mental patients in the beginning of the twentieth century. Following Michel Foucault, genealogy is here used as a means to explore and reclaim subjugated knowledges, i.e. knowledges that have been dismissed, distorted, disqualified and put aside by more powerful and ultimately victorious knowledge claims, in this case the psychiatric discourse. Historically oriented research on madness has often explored medical and cultural discourses and representations, as these correspond to sources that can be easily found in archives. This also means that mental patients’ own narratives and texts have been more difficult to trace, partly due to the paucity of available documentation. Herein lies a challenge: how can we represent these subjects, whose stories are inevitably always already captured and filtered by authorities, without portraying them either as passive victims or reducing them to effects of power networks? The article thus ponders research ethics, the question of Otherness and the power of representations. The difficulties in representing female patients’ “own”voices are discussed, yet the article points to the necessity of taking voices that are simultaneously in the margins and in the centre of more powerful discourses, seriously as objects of knowledge. The article argues that “the insurrection of subjugated knowledges”, i.e. bringing back such knowledges as represented here by mental patients’ narratives, opens us otherpossibilities of knowledge. Hence, mental patients’ letters are seen as important “fractures” in the official and legitimized knowledge of madness, offering alternative understandings of both committed individuals and the psychiatric discourse itself.

    Abstract [en]

According to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, children shall be provided the opportunity to express their views in all matters that affect them. Despite this, research and several public authorities highlight several shortcomings concerning the participation of children in child welfare practice. The purpose of the study is to investigate social workers' experiences with involving children when using the Signs of Safety working method.

The study is based on a qualitative approach and seven semi-structured interviews with social workers in social services who work with child welfare assessments based on Signs of Safety. A thematic analysis indicated that social workers could identify some obstacles and difficulties with parts of Signs of Safety. However, they largely believe that Signs of Safety supports them to involve children.

    Abstract [en]

The occurrence of mental illness amongst the elderly has increased and is a relatively unexplored subject. About 22% of the Swedish population that suffered from mental illness or behavioural disorders in 2019 was elderly. This study will use a qualitative method and semi structured interviews with nine different unit managers within the elderly care, to explore the support for this target group. The purpose of the study is to describe the managers within elderly care's experiences with support for elderly with mental illness. The study’s results show a lack of competence about elderly with mental illness. The conclusion showed collaboration between the operating agencies and a higher staffing density is needed in order to better design a support that fills their needs.

Labour–management relations and employee involvement in lean production systems in different national contexts: A comparison of French and Swedish aerospace companies2023In: Economic and Industrial Democracy, ISSN 0143-831X, E-ISSN 1461-7099, Vol. 44, no 4, p. 1027-1051Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Existing research has found heterogeneity in the implementation of Lean and its outcomes in terms of employee involvement across countries. This article explores the potential role of labour–management relations. It relies on in-depth company case studies carried out in the aerospace industry in France and Sweden. The study finds significant variations in employee involvement – higher in the Swedish than in the French cases. Managerial orientations did play a role, as the ‘technocratic’ form of Lean in France echoed a more unilateral top-down conception of management, while Swedish managers appeared more receptive to the ‘involvement-enhancing’ paradigm. But the attitudes and behaviours of unions were also a crucial factor, as Swedish unions were very effective in impinging on the implementation of Lean at workplace level, while their French counterparts, often divided, adopted a more defensive stance, lacking expertise and implication in the promotion of high-involvement work organisations.

    Abstract [en]

Family caregiving of people with dementia is expected to increase due to a declining public care and a growing number of people suffering from dementia. There is a need for better understanding of the life situation of family caregivers in order to give them the right support. The aim of this literature study is to emphasize the life situation of relatives caring for persons with dementia disease.  The methodological approach is thematic analysis av 15 qualitative studies that have been identified after a literature search conducted in three databases. The results are presented in three main themes and five sub-themes. The themes highlight the family caregivers, their experience and the strategies they use to cope with everyday life. The study concludes that the life situation of the family caregivers is individualized. Their support needs are varying according to the development of the dementia disease and the circumstances before the illness.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the essay is to investigate how the child perspective is taken into consideration in the social services' management of financial assistance. The method used is a qualitative interview study. Six social workers within financial assistance have been interviewed. The study is based on the theory of discretion, and is of relevance to social work since children in families who receive financial assistance constitute a vulnerable group who is at risk of ending socially vulnerable even in adulthood.

The results of the study show that most of the social workers perceive the child perspective as unclear. The study also shows that children tend to be invisible in financial assistance, and that the social workers perceive that they do not have sufficient conditions to work from a child perspective. The study further shows that most of the social workers have a request to work more from a child perspective.

    Partly human, partly organization

In this article the phenomenon of organization is discussed and its consequences for the understanding of human actions and human choices are examined. Affiliation to organizations are found to be both restrictions on and preconditions for most human action. In this connection families are regarded as organizations as well as enterprises, voluntary associations and states. Human action is primarily action on behalf of organizations where individuals are partly human, partly organization. To understand the meaning of action on behalf of organization it is important to realize that people rarely choose their organizational affiliation. People are selected. This means that actions on behalf of organizations cannot be regarded as expressions of individual choices. Actions on behalf of organizations are generally characterized by a dual involvement.

    Abstract [en]

    The organization of civil society

The three societal spheres state, market and civil society are compared from an organizational perspective. A state is a certain kind of organization with compulsory affiliation. The state is an empirical category that is fairly easy to describe. A market is made up of the interaction of several organizations in exchange. Most actors on a market are people acting on behalf of organizations. Also states are present in markets buying arms for example, or as employers on the labour market. There are several kinds of organization mentioned in connection with civil society such as voluntary associations, social movements and networks. It is concluded that the organizations of civil society are not very persistent. Moreover the notion of civil society is not more incompatible with the state than with other organizational arrangements. As a conclusion it is argued that it is more relevant to understand social processes in terms of types of organization that in terms of states, markets and civil society.

Migration, transformation, and the homecoming of a culture: Tango in Finland and Japan as an example2016In: Migration, transformation, and the homecoming of a culture: Tango in Finland and Japan as an example, 2016Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In Finland, a great distance away from Buenos Aires, people crowd dance floors nightly to dance to tango music, while the tango has also captured the hearts of the people on the other side of the world in Japan. The popularity of the tango in both Finland and Japan, however, is not so familiar to the outside world.

In this paper, I will discuss the motives and the paths by which a culture travels, settles and shapes itself into a new form, using the tango as an example. First, the tango’s relationship to society and history in each of these countries are explored using archives and literature. Then such aspects as inner emotion, solitude, illusion, and liminality are analyzed through data collected from surveys, interviews, and forum discussions in the SNS.

Some scholars suggest that the tango reflects the personality, mentality, and identity of the Finnish and Japanese peoples. Though this may be partially true, it is difficult to generalize about the Finnish or Japanese personality. It is argued, rather, that the tango's prosperity in these two countries has significant connections to some shared historical and social factors. I also propose that the 'liminality' of tango dancing plays an important role in both nations that went through difficult struggles to recover from the damage caused by war. “The liminal phase is considered sacred, anomalous, abnormal and dangerous, while the pre- and post-liminal phases are normal and a profane state of being” (Selänniemi 1996). Tango dancing can be considered an escape or a vacation from the hardship of everyday life as well as a fuel which enables the people to keep moving forward.

The tango’s transformation in Finland and Japan, and its homecoming back to Argentina are also examined. The results reveal some of the unusual paths a culture can travel.

Kvinnors upplevelser av hedersrelaterat våld och förtryck i Sverige2023Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study aimed to investigate how newly graduated social workers, in the social services' income support, experience their work in the first time after graduation, and what factors affect their experiences. This is based on requirements-, control and the support model. Data collection took place through six semi-structured interviews with newly graduated social workers who work on the social services' income support. Collected data were analyzed with thematic analysis. The results showed that newly graduated social workers experience feelings of insecurity, unpreparedness, and stress. The results also showed that quantitative workload is high, but support plays an important role in ensuring that newly graduated social workers thrive in the workplace.

    Abstract [en]

The unions argue that temporary work has created more unsecure jobs. However, the Confederation of Swedish enterprise argue that temporary work has not increased during the last 15 years. This statistic is confirmed by Statistic Sweden (SCB) which shows a small decrease of temporary workers during the second quarter of 2019. The report shows that the number of temporary workers has not changed for a long time, however it shows that their employment has become even more unsecure. The study has been conducted in the city of Falun Sweden, whit the purpose of studying how temporary workers within the eldercare and disability sector in a medium sized city in Sweden see their employment as SMS- employees and if they feel cohesion in the workplace. The purpose was also to examine if the employment influences their social life. Seven semi structured interviews were conducted whit workers whit this type of employment within the sectors. The study is using a thematic analyse and has been divided into four themes: critic, private life, cohesion, and security. The themes are using three theories as well as previous studies to analyse the data. In the analysis of the recorded data, Guy Standings theory of the precariat, Antonvskys theory of KASAM and Karasek and Theorell’s model of requirement and control have been used. The study has shown that SMS- employment is indeed a precarious employment and can cause various problems for the employee. However, the study also shows that for people who have safety in form of another income and have chosen this employment, the employment can give an enormous freedom and help get a good amount of work balance.

Who is the economic criminal? A comparison between countries and types of crime

In white collar crime research two particularly competing definitions (Sutherland versus the Revisionists) have dominated the field during the last two decades. Sutherland’s definition states that the sociodemographic profile is homogeneous (entrepreneur with high education and high or regular income), despite type of white collar crime or context. The definition given by the Revisionists states that white collar criminals’ demographic profile is heterogeneous (everyone can be convicted for white collar crime). As a consequence of this divided definitional approach we have a contradictive outcome of who the white collar criminal is. Our purpose is to investigate the qualification of the two definitions by analyzing heterogeneity/ homogeneity based on crime type and national context. The investigation is based on seven countries from the EES 2004 (European Social Survey). We use four types of crime. The results show a rather homogeneous demographic profile but there is also a certain substantial heterogeneity depending on kinds of crime and context. The results altogether indicate that the Revisionists’ definition is more correct in its description of the white collar criminal than Sutherland’s definition. The demographic profile of the white collar criminal seems to be more complex than a profile confined to just one social category would be and the contextual factor has an impact on the variety of the demographic profile. An important task for future research is to hold the door open for further demographic investigations depending on the type of crime and country that the study is based on.

Kriminella attityder hos ungdomar: En kvantitativ studie om vad som påverkar kriminella attityder hos ungdomar i årskurs 92014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Research shows that mental illness in young people is increasing, especially in young girls. This study´s aim was to investigate counsellor’s-'knowledge and experiences about young girls' mental health and the use of social media, as well as its impact on young girls. The method in the survey has been qualitative, semi-structured interviews with goal-oriented selection that is fundamental. All the data were processed through thematic analysis to clearly describe the results. The results of the study have shown that body dissatisfaction, weight gain and comparison with others on social media are very occurring among young girls, which can cause mental illness in the form of anxiety, depression, and performance anxiety. In addition, cyberbullying is common among young girls on social media. The results also show that selfconfidence and self-esteem in girls have been negatively affected and resulted in mental illness increasing with the use of social media.

    Abstract [en]

This essay, a revised version of the keynote lecture prepared for Sociologidagarna 18–20 March 2020 in Stockholm, introduces a new, cultural-sociological theory of materiality. Sociology did not metabolize the cultural turn until the 1980s. Even when cultural sociology finally did emerge, moreover, there were powerful pushbacks against it. Neo-Marxism, neo-Pragmatism, neo-institutionalism incorporated this or that cultural concept but resisted the culture turn more broadly, tying meaning to social structure and practice rather than recognizing its autonomy. Cultural sociology has flourished in recent decades, but so have new backlash movements. None has been more persistent than the turn toward the object and its reduction to materiality. Icon theory positions itself again this turn, suggesting that, in society, materiality is invested with imagination and enlivened by performativity. The surface of objects is aesthetically formed, and the meaning of such sensuous experience of outer form is structured by invisibly discursive depth. Durkheim’s sacred and profane must be complemented by Burke’s beautiful and sublime. Informed by background representations, such aesthetic-cum-moral objects are designed by artists and craft-persons; produced by creators with access to material resources; put into the scene by advertisers and PR specialists; and mediated by criticism – before they are embraced or rejected by audiences.

Stuprör, hängrännor och rännkrokar: Utvärdering av projektet Samordnat stöd till barn och föräldrar i familjer med missbruk 2013–20142015Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Heredity, environment, or both? A critical realistic critique of the heritability methodology

With heritability methodology researchers using twin studies, and during recent year also DNA studies, have claimed that heredity plays a crucial role in explaining social outcomes. Explaining what causes social outcomes is a strive to explain how reality is constituted, and is thus an ontological question. The purpose of this article is to examine the unspoken ontological assumptions in heritability studies from a critical realistic perspective. First I’ll explain the basics of the heritability methodology, the twin methodology and DNA studies that measure heritability, then I’ll describe the previous criticism of these studies. Thereafter I’ll argue that the heritability studies do not examine the actual causes of social events, but rather that the measures are driven by other underlying mechanisms, which thus are the ones possessing the generative power to influence social outcomes. Against this background, I argue that the studies commit the fallacy of misplaced concreteness and the epistemic fallacy. In conclusion, I argue that concrete social phenomena should be understood as an interplay between different generative mechanisms.

    Abstract [en]

Swedish society today is characterized by cultural diversity. The number of refugees has increased in recent years. Being a refugee in Sweden, with a high-level education, and without a qualified job is a trying situation. Most studies point to difficulties and barriers for refugee academics in entering the Swedish labor market. However, some refugee academics have managed to circumvent these difficulties and have found a strong foothold in the labor market. The study was conducted with a qualitative study aimed at examining positive examples of six male refugees with a college degree, who come from Iraq, Syria, Somalia and Afghanistan, and their path to a qualified job. The results show that the participants' cultural capital and their empowerment facilitates access to the labor market. Our study shows that social contacts are of little importance to our participants in their search for employment.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate social workers and police investigators perceptions and experiences of cooperation between the two authorities in cases of violence against women and children by men in a close relationship. The method used was qualitative with semi-structured interviews. Three social workers in the social services and two police investigators were interviewed. Cooperation was used as a theoretical frame. The result showed that cooperation is perceived as more extensive and structured when children are involved, compared to when women without children are abused. Collaboration is affected by different work methods, procedures, rules of confidentiality, lack of resources and time. Results showed further that personal relationships affect cooperation and there is knowledge and awareness of violence in close relationships in both authorities. Cooperation between social services and the police is necessary and contributes to help abused women and children to get the support they need.
