Partner care, gender equality, and ageing in Spain and Sweden2017In: International Journal of Ageing and Later Life, E-ISSN 1652-8670, Vol. 11, no 1, p. 69-89Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We used national surveys to study how older persons’ changing household patterns influence the gender balance of caregiving in two countries with distinct household structures and cultures, Spain and Sweden. In both countries, men and women provide care equally often for their partner in couple-only households. This has become the most common household type among older persons in Spain and prevails altogether in Sweden. This challenges the traditional dominance of young or middle-aged women as primary caregivers in Spain. In Sweden, many caregivers are old themselves. We focus attention to partners as caregivers and the consequences of changing household structures for caregiving, which may be on the way to gender equality in both countries, with implications for families and for the public services.

    Abstract [en]

According to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, children shall be provided the opportunity to express their views in all matters that affect them. Despite this, research and several public authorities highlight several shortcomings concerning the participation of children in child welfare practice. The purpose of the study is to investigate social workers' experiences with involving children when using the Signs of Safety working method.

The study is based on a qualitative approach and seven semi-structured interviews with social workers in social services who work with child welfare assessments based on Signs of Safety. A thematic analysis indicated that social workers could identify some obstacles and difficulties with parts of Signs of Safety. However, they largely believe that Signs of Safety supports them to involve children.

    Abstract [en]

The occurrence of mental illness amongst the elderly has increased and is a relatively unexplored subject. About 22% of the Swedish population that suffered from mental illness or behavioural disorders in 2019 was elderly. This study will use a qualitative method and semi structured interviews with nine different unit managers within the elderly care, to explore the support for this target group. The purpose of the study is to describe the managers within elderly care's experiences with support for elderly with mental illness. The study’s results show a lack of competence about elderly with mental illness. The conclusion showed collaboration between the operating agencies and a higher staffing density is needed in order to better design a support that fills their needs.

    Abstract [en]

Family caregiving of people with dementia is expected to increase due to a declining public care and a growing number of people suffering from dementia. There is a need for better understanding of the life situation of family caregivers in order to give them the right support. The aim of this literature study is to emphasize the life situation of relatives caring for persons with dementia disease.  The methodological approach is thematic analysis av 15 qualitative studies that have been identified after a literature search conducted in three databases. The results are presented in three main themes and five sub-themes. The themes highlight the family caregivers, their experience and the strategies they use to cope with everyday life. The study concludes that the life situation of the family caregivers is individualized. Their support needs are varying according to the development of the dementia disease and the circumstances before the illness.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the essay is to investigate how the child perspective is taken into consideration in the social services' management of financial assistance. The method used is a qualitative interview study. Six social workers within financial assistance have been interviewed. The study is based on the theory of discretion, and is of relevance to social work since children in families who receive financial assistance constitute a vulnerable group who is at risk of ending socially vulnerable even in adulthood.

The results of the study show that most of the social workers perceive the child perspective as unclear. The study also shows that children tend to be invisible in financial assistance, and that the social workers perceive that they do not have sufficient conditions to work from a child perspective. The study further shows that most of the social workers have a request to work more from a child perspective.

Kvinnors upplevelser av hedersrelaterat våld och förtryck i Sverige2023Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study aimed to investigate how newly graduated social workers, in the social services' income support, experience their work in the first time after graduation, and what factors affect their experiences. This is based on requirements-, control and the support model. Data collection took place through six semi-structured interviews with newly graduated social workers who work on the social services' income support. Collected data were analyzed with thematic analysis. The results showed that newly graduated social workers experience feelings of insecurity, unpreparedness, and stress. The results also showed that quantitative workload is high, but support plays an important role in ensuring that newly graduated social workers thrive in the workplace.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Swedish society today is characterized by cultural diversity. The number of refugees has increased in recent years. Being a refugee in Sweden, with a high-level education, and without a qualified job is a trying situation. Most studies point to difficulties and barriers for refugee academics in entering the Swedish labor market. However, some refugee academics have managed to circumvent these difficulties and have found a strong foothold in the labor market. The study was conducted with a qualitative study aimed at examining positive examples of six male refugees with a college degree, who come from Iraq, Syria, Somalia and Afghanistan, and their path to a qualified job. The results show that the participants' cultural capital and their empowerment facilitates access to the labor market. Our study shows that social contacts are of little importance to our participants in their search for employment.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate social workers and police investigators perceptions and experiences of cooperation between the two authorities in cases of violence against women and children by men in a close relationship. The method used was qualitative with semi-structured interviews. Three social workers in the social services and two police investigators were interviewed. Cooperation was used as a theoretical frame. The result showed that cooperation is perceived as more extensive and structured when children are involved, compared to when women without children are abused. Collaboration is affected by different work methods, procedures, rules of confidentiality, lack of resources and time. Results showed further that personal relationships affect cooperation and there is knowledge and awareness of violence in close relationships in both authorities. Cooperation between social services and the police is necessary and contributes to help abused women and children to get the support they need.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to investigate how staff in student health teams at high school perceives how the pressure to perform socially in the social arena of school affects the students and how staff prevent, or perceive that they should work preventively against this. The study is based on eight qualitative, semi-structured interviews with staff from student health-teams at high schools. The collected data was analyzed using thematic analysis. The results show that staff from the student health-teams perceived that students may feel pressure and stress to live up to some form of expectations set by themselves and others. This can lead to psychosomatic issues, condescending thoughts and self-valuations. The results also show that preventive work can focus on making norms visible and talk about what they mean and how they affect us. That can give the students an understanding of what unconsciously affects them and their well-being.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to examine how social workers at the unit for financial assistance look at the preventive work with families receiving financial assistance, to prevent the children from becoming beneficiaries themselves in the future. The study was based on a qualitative approach, where semi-structured interviews was used as method for data collection. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the collected material. The result of the study shows that the social workers believe that the preventive work should focus on the parents, by assisting them to as soon as possible reach self-sufficiency and support them to be good role models for their children. Further, the result show that the social workers wish to work more preventive, but that a reorganization in the municipality is required to enable an effective preventive work.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate how staffs at group housing and service housing manage dilemmas between nursing and self-determination. Experiences of dilemmas, how they manage these dilemmas and factors that determined their actions were explored. The data were collected through six semi-structured interviews with staffs in group housing and service housing and was analyzed using a thematic analysis. The result showed that the staff face many dilemmas, and their management of these situations is always based on self-determination. Communication was also a significant part of how they manage the dilemmas. Furthermore, the study showed that staffs deal with dilemmas based on their own intention - to promote self-determination and nursing. Their actions are based on what they can do morally and organizationally as well as the patients’ actions.

    Abstract [en]

The Wellbeing Wheel is a tool used for early detection, assessment, and planning around children. This study examines how this artefact has been translated from Scotland to Sweden and what that process involved in relation to transformation from the original ideas when travelling from one specific context to another. The analysis was based on three graphic wheels and their supporting documentation, interviews, and field notes. The results reveal great similarity in the overall ‘spirit’ of the work performed to introduce the Wellbeing Wheel to the Swedish context, but on several points significant differences can also be noted, with some content being removed or relocated, and new content being added. These changes were conscious and intentional in some instances, while others arose spontaneously and ad hoc during the development processes. © 2023 The Author(s). Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to study how Swedish teachers in Physical education work with mental health, their own perceived level of knowledge and how they wish to work.   A quantitative survey has been conducted via Facebook. In total 146 respondents participated in the survey. The results were analyzed with the theories KASAM and OCB role perception taken into account, and linked to previous research.   The result shows that teachers plan for mental health in the education quite rarely, but nevertheless talk about mental health relatively often outside of scheduled time. Most teachers consider themselves to have a fairly good knowledge of mental health. However, more than half of them perceive that the subject has been treated to a low degree during their own education. Most teachers want mental health to take a greater part in lessons. Several teachers suggest that mental health should become an own subject.

    Abstract [en]

This literature review investigates how pregnant womens’ life situations are affected by mens’ violence. The data material consists of twelve articles which aims to present the womens’ own stories. The articles/studies have been analysed and categorised into four themes and subthemes, which represents the result of the literature review. The result has been discussed with the theory of gender power, radical feminism and the four levels of inequality for a greater understanding of the womens’ life situations. The discussion illustrates how social workers can be inspired to work with women, who are exposed to violence during pregnancy, with a perspective of empowerment. The literature review shows the importance for social workers to have an overall picture and understanding about how the womens’ home situation, ambivalence, self images and the difficultness with leaving creates a complex life situation where the women and their children are in need of support and help to be able to act on their own needs and increase their power.

    Abstract [en]

Problematic gaming among adolescents in Sweden is a growing and many concerns, parents, school and social services worry about the negative impact gaming might have on adolescents. The aim of the study was to examine and describe the experiences that social workers have regarding gaming and its meaning for adolescents. The method used was qualitative and involved interviews with both municipal social workers and school counsellors and the interviews were analysed according to thematic analysis. The results showed that there is great concern among the professionals and that gaming can involve great consequences for many adolescents including some positive aspects. However, the conclusions are that there are reasons to be concerned about the growing problematic gaming among adolescents and that there is a need for increased knowledge on the subject.

Digital images as part of an implementation process: patterns in digital representations of community mental health service providers2014Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Systems for freedom of choice have been implemented as an organizational structure in public welfare in several western countries. The aim of the market model is to increase citizens’ freedom of choice, conduce diversification in service and providers of service, while contribute higher quality of service and facilitate efficient use of public funds. In Sweden “Act of Free Choice Systems” (2008:962) was introduced in 2009, and optional for municipalities to use. Several municipalities have opened up for both public and non-public providers for citizens’ to choose from in different welfare sectors. Mental health care was one of them. The implemented competitive market logic meant providers needed to promote themselves to attract users to be able to stay on the market.

Aim: The aim of this study is to describe and analyse how public and non-public providers’ of community mental health care use digital pictures during the time of an implementation of a competitive market system in Sweden.

Methods: A case study was conducted. A municipality was strategically selected because a free choice system was implemented in their community mental health care in 2010. Day centres, a common community mental health care support was selected to constitute the focus of the study. All providers had a digital space of their own at the municipality’s website. Digital pictures from each homepage were collected in 2012, when the new system had been running for a while. All pictures were included in the study. Pictures were transcribed using the semiotic model. Transcribed data was analysed with content analyse and categorized into themes. A frequency analysis was conducted to show similarities and differences in content.

Results: Homepages showed between 0 and 88 digital pictures. Public providers displayed less pictures than non-public providers. The content analyse identified three main categories: 1. Presenting pictures 2. Illustrative pictures 3. Emotional intermediating pictures. The frequency analyse showed three main recurring contents: pastries (10 providers), flowers and trees (10 providers) and the building’s exterior (9 providers). Distinguishing pictures were; mountain climber (one provider), dogs at the Coffey table (two providers).

Analyse/Discussion: Digital pictures seemed to fulfil different purposes; to present activities such as buildings and persons, to illustrate text and to convey feelings of growth, inclusion, participation and friendship. The most recurring picture content was interpreted as follows: pastries, as appealing to the sense of sweetness, something tasting good, homely, attractive; flowers and trees as appealing to growth, literal and symbolic; building’s exterior as representing the place physically. Mountain climber pictures were interpreted as appealing to adventure and excitement, dogs at the Coffey table as appealing to a wish for non-demanding fellowship, a wish for pets.

Conclusion: Most providers used digital pictures in their promotion of themselves. Pictures were used in different ways and with different intentions. Non-public providers displayed more pictures than public providers. This might implicate non-public providers were more adjusted to the new competitive system where promotion was part of the game.

Frames for choice and market characteristics - a Swedish case study of community mental health services in change2015In: Nordic Social Work Research, ISSN 2156-857X, E-ISSN 2156-8588, Vol. 5, no 3, p. 227-243, article id 1059772Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to describe and analyse structural frames for choice, as well as characteristics of a free-choice market, implemented in community mental health services in Sweden. Day centres were focused. A case study was conducted. Documents were collected and semi-structured interviews were conducted with twenty-eight agents involved in the implementation process. Content analysis of data showed that users’ freedom of choice was influenced by detailed regulation. Freedom of choice was extended, but it was also substantially reduced. The gain or loss of freedom of choice depended on which aspects of the system were emphasised. Features, which could be interpreted as paternalistic, were once again structurally embedded, despite a system addressing individual freedom of choice. Further, the market did not seem to be adjusted for the average user of community mental health services.

Freedom of choice or cost efficiency?: the implementation of a free-choice market system in community mental health services in Sweden2016In: Scandinavian Journal of Disability Research, ISSN 1501-7419, E-ISSN 1745-3011, Vol. 18, no 2, p. 129-141Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This case study investigates the implementation of a free-choice market system in community mental health services using the example of day centres for people with psychiatric disabilities. It was conducted in a major city that was about to implement a free-choice market system due to a new legislation that made it feasible. Eighteen semi-structured interviews were conducted. Agents situated in different parts of the organization were interviewed one year before and two years after the free-choice system was launched in 2010. Data showed a top–down political process. A majority of the intentions of the legislation advocated individual autonomy as the market system's main purpose; only one concerned organizational efficiency. Data reflected, however, that financial efficiency dominated the agents' experiences of the implemented system. The twofold market purpose was clearly reflected in the interviews. Front-line staff hoped for improvements mainly for the users, whereas managers mainly focused on the market as a resource allocator.

Extended freedom attained?: A case study of a free-choice market system in community mental health care.2013Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Background/Objectives Systems for freedom of choice within mental health has been implemented in several western countries to increase citizens’ freedom of choice, conduce diversification in service and providers of service, reduce inequalities by providing equitable choice to all users while contribute higher quality of service and facilitate efficient use of public funds. In Sweden “Act of Free Choice Systems” (2008:962) was introduced in 2009, and optional for municipalities to use. Community mental health is organized within the municipalities. The aim of this study is to describe the process of designing and constructing a market of free choice within community mental health, and analyse what kind of freedom of choice the citizen in need of community mental health have, in the example of Daily occupation.

Methods A case study was conducted in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, where free choice was implemented in January 2010. The study consists of semi-structured interviews with twenty-eight actors’ involved in the process, complemented with political documents. Interviews were conducted 2009 and 2012. To analyse the material direct content analysis was used, and theories regarding quasi-markets, market design and regulation of markets were applied.

Results The design and construction of the market of community mental health have determined the degree of clients’ freedom of choice. The volume of the market was regulated by national legislation, but sometimes influenced by the local political budget, and users sometimes appealed their decisions in court to have their rights assessed by law. Admission rules set by authorities concerning management and staff qualifications, financial stability and technical documentation equipment, determined which providers could enter the market. Many user-led organisations were not able to enter due to the admission rules. Quality regulation was developed by authorities to examine providers within the system. The client should be provided neutral and rich information, though full information was hard to access.

Discussion/Conclusion Freedom of choice seems to have been both extended and reduced by the design and construction of the new system. All users theoretically had the same possibilities to choose providers in the system. However the construction limited the actual client choice significantly.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine drug counselors' experience of using reward as a work method and how a more lenient view on substance use can help foster the treatment process and reduce stigma surrounding drug use. The study is based on semi-structured interviews with 4 drug counselors from a municipality in Sweden. The study used a qualitative approach, and the results were analyzed using an abductive approach. The data was analyzed using Becker's theory on labeling and Goffman's theory on stigmatization. The results show that drug-counselors experience the use of reward in drug treatment as an effective tool in creating a positive association to both treatment and the counselors themselves. Reward also helps fulfill an important function in promoting a non-judgmental approach which the counselors then can build upon. The results also show the complexity regarding having a more tolerant outlook on drug consumption, but also that criminalization of drug use is seen as a contributing factor in the stigmatization of youth with substance use disorder.

    Abstract [en]

Many children in society live in families where one or both parents have drug-addiction prob- lems. Early life conditions for these children may result in a need of support, which may be a requirement for a more favourable psycho-social development. The study purpose was to in- vestigate social worker’s experience of work with children with drug addiction problems in their primary family, based on the criticism of social service assistance. The study was based on a qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews. Six social workers in central Swe- den were interviewed about their experience of structural and individual preconditions and difficulties in the work. The study shows that the majority of the difficulties are experienced on the structural level within the organization while the majority of the preconditions are ex- perienced on the individual level. The structural difficulties are not experienced to affect the respondent’s own individual preconditions in their work and neither the feeling that they in their profession are able to do a good job. In addition, all the respondents feel that the support for the children and young people meet the current needs.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to examine care managers perception of working with elderly people with alcoholic and addiction problems. This is answered through a focus group interview with four care managers from a municipality in the central part of Sweden. Empirical data has been analyzed with content analysis and linked to previous research and theory of collaboration, self-determination and legal, moral and organizational conditions.Result shows that care managers working with elderly consider that alcohol and addiction problems can result in both social and health problems in the elderly’s life. They also notice a greater social acceptance around alcohol consumption by elderly women and men than two decades ago. Care managers experience that moral conditions can affect their discretion in a negative way, that cooperation with their own unit and the unit for abuse works properly when cooperation is needed and that care managers also notice that autonomy is among the most important approach when working with elderly people with alcohol and addiction.

    Abstract [en]

The Swedish community and social services face major challenges regarding the management of honor-related violence and oppression. Lack of knowledge and an ambiguous understanding of violence affect the work of social services and may complicate the situation of vulnerable individuals. The main purpose of this study was to investigate social workers, within the section of children and family in a Swedish municipality, perceived knowledge and confidence in honor-related cases and the need for support in their work. The social workers’ views on honor-related violence and oppression were also investigated. The survey was based on a quantitative approach and questionnaires were used for data collection. The main results demonstrate that the social workers to some extent perceive themselves as having expertise in the field of honor. Nevertheless, they feel insecure in the work with honor-related cases. Furthermore, it appears that social workers are in need of specific support from the organization such as education and case supervision. Regarding the view of honor violence, a majority indicated that a gender perspective and a cultural perspective were important to understand the problem.

Promoting social engagement for young adults living in social isolation: Social workers and health care professionals' perceptions of success factors2019Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Today the global number of young adults not in employment, education or training seem to increase. A large proportion of the group are unemployed and disengaged and have not been in contact with any authority. Thus, they are invisible to many community services and official agencies. The situation standing outside the society may have negative long-term health effects and statistics shows that more than a third of the target group after ten years still not work or study. Socially withdrawn youth is a complex phenomenon and very few young adults seek help, often due to their lack of motivation. For this reason, unemployed and inactive young people are often described as being a difficult group to support and engage. Further, there is currently limited evidence on the effects of interventions directed to socially withdrawn youth not in employment or education and the use of evidence-based practice has to be improved.

Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate social workers and health care professionals’ experiences of working with young adults living in social isolation, and to identify which interventions the professionals find most successful in supporting the young adults’ engagement in society.

Methods: In this study a qualitative method was used. Ten semi-structured interviews were conducted that included thirteen employees from social services and outpatient psychiatric clinics in a Swedish county. Data were analyzed using thematic network analysis.

Results: Analysis resulted in two general thematic networks: ”barriers of the transition into adulthood” and ”to manage complex needs”. Participants tended to associate the issues of young adults with difficulties related to transition into adulthood. Mental health problems, low self-esteem, school related problems and limited social networks also came out in the interviews as factors that characterized unemployed and disengaged socially withdrawn youths. Participants described that successful work to re-engage these young adults included an empowerment-oriented perspective with a focus on the individual strengths, integrated and coordinated interventions and a flexible working approach.

Conclusion: Today the societal changes and the process of individualization place greater demands on individual resources and capabilities which might increase the risk of social exclusion. Participants indicated that the complex problems of socially isolated young adults and experiences of long-term disengagement may contribute to stable and persistent withdrawal from society. Early identification and support for youths at risk of social withdrawal, a holistic approach, multifaceted interventions and tailored and flexible activities is deemed crucial to help reintegrate these young people. Further investigation is required to examine the effects of interventions targeting socially withdrawn and inactive young adults.

Etablerade invandrares perspektiv på integration: En kvalitativ studie om etablerade invandrares upplevelser av integrationsprocessen i småstäder2020Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate social workers’ experiences of talking to adolescent’s about pornography and its impact on sexuality and relationships. The analysis emanated from a qualitative approach, where semi-structured interviews were used. A thematic analysis was used to analyse the data. The result of the study suggests that adults need to be in youth´s arena to be able to meet them in their questions. Social workers express a genuine concern about the easy access to pornographic content which the internet contributes to, because of the belief that the youths will be negatively affected by pornography. Sexual acts that are considered as sexual violence by adults are depicted as normal by youths in their sexual relationships.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to expand the understanding and knowledge of the professional role of Social service officers in elderly care. The study intends to shed light on and deepen the understanding of the dilemmas and difficulties that may arise in the trial process and how these could be handled. The study’s theoretical approach is based on street-level bureaucracy as well as different coping strategies and ethical aspects. The empirical material has been obtained through semi-structured interviews with Social service officers. The results shows that the perceived difficulties exist in collaboration, within the organization's structure and in the work towards clients and their relatives. Social service officers deal with these difficulties by finding support from collegial meetings, as well as from colleagues and the immediate foreman. Furthermore, it appears that Social service officers is a diverse professional role where the individual needs to handle several arrents at the same time, and the experience is that there are not always enough resources to carry out their work in a satisfactory manner.

Organiserad brottslighet bland ungdomar: Polisers upplevelser av samverkan med socialtjänst2023Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to obtain an understanding of whether and how young adults, with foreign background, feel that their views of their ethnic identity have been affected by growing up in a society where they are both part of a majority and minority population. This study also seeks to examine whether and how their view of their ethnic identity has affected their relationship with their family. Qualitative methods were used in this study, in terms of one focus group interview and four individual interviews. The material has been analyzed based on sociological theories of ethnic identity. Based on the collected empirical data, and the analysis of the results, the conclusion is that the perception of ethnic identity depends highly on the situation. The majority of respondents express a sense of double identity, where they experienced two ethnic identifications. They then switch between these identities depending on what is most appropriate based on the current situation. Another conclusion is that the family seems to play a significant role in the individuals views of their ethnic identities.

Does the design of extra care housing meet the needs of the residents?: a focus group study2012In: Ageing & Society, ISSN 0144-686X, E-ISSN 1469-1779, Vol. 32, no 7, p. 1193-1214Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The study objective was to explore the views of residents and relatives concerning the physical design of extra-care housing. Five focus groups were conducted with residents in four extra-care schemes in England. One focus group was carried out with relatives of residents from a fifth scheme. Schemes were purposively sampled to represent size, type, and resident tenure. Data were analysed thematically using NVivo 8. Two over-arching themes emerged from the data: how the building supports the lifestyle and how the building design affects usability. Provision of activities and access to amenities were more restrictive for residents with disabilities. Independent living was compromised by building elements that did not take account of reduced physical ability. Other barriers to independence included poor kitchen design and problems doing laundry. Movement around the schemes was difficult and standards of space and storage provision were inadequate. The buildings were too hot, too brightly lit and poorly ventilated. Accessible external areas enabled residents to connect with the outside world. The study concluded that, while the design of extra-care housing meets the needs of residents who are relatively fit and healthy, those with physical frailties and/or cognitive impairment can find the building restrictive resulting in marginalisation. Design across the dependency spectrum is key in meeting the needs of residents. Inclusive, flexible design is required to benefit residents who are ageing in situ and have varying care needs.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the current study was to explore how social workers experience their knowledge and resources in their work with honor-related violence and oppression. We conducted a qualitative study based on semi-structured interviews with five social workers from two different municipalities in Sweden, who worked with honor-related violence and oppression. Collected data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The result showed a lack of knowledge and resources in the area, which resulted in a lack of security in the workplace. The result also showed the connection between power and knowledge and that these are interconnected and interdependent. Lack of knowledge in turn constitutes powerlessness. Knowledge thus becomes a lifeline for the social worker to be able to exercise the power needed to help victims of honor-related violence and oppression. Our study indicates that more research is needed that gives new perspectives on a work with honor-related violence and oppression.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate and find out how the support in society looks when a man is exposed to violence by a woman in intimate partner relationship, but also to be able to contribute knowledge about the topic “men as victims of violence in intimate partner relations”. In order to answer the purpose and the questions, we used a qualitative approach with unstructured interviews as a method. Seven social secretaries who work in social services with violence in close relationships in different parts of Sweden were interviewed. The informants' answers were compared and then analyzed with the help of previous research in the field as well as theories in women's violence against men in intimate partner relations. The conclusions we have been able to make through this study are that social secretaries in social services do not feel that they have equivalent help to offer men and that they lack knowledge and tools to be able to help men who are or have been exposed to violence in an intimate partner relationship.

    Abstract [en]

This essay aims to investigate how social workers and therapists work to prevent adolescents from discontinuing their treatment. The study is based on qualitative interviews with social workers and therapists in the field of substance abuse treatment. By exploring their experiences and strategies in working with adolescents who terminate treatment early, this essay seeks to contribute to an increased understanding of how to prevent early treatment dropout among adolescents. The questions explored included the different strategies and methods employed by social workers and therapists to reduce the risk of treatment dropout, how they work to encourage adolescents to stay in treatment, and which strategies have proven to be most effective in this work.

The results of this essay demonstrate that both social workers and therapists are actively engaged in preventing further dropout among adolescents. They devote a significant amount of time and energy to address this issue through various working methods and collaboration among themselves. The findings suggest that it is crucial for the adolescents, along with the social workers and therapists, to work together to motivate the youths and make them feel heard and respected in order to maintain their motivation to continue the treatment.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of our study was to shad a light on case makers possibilities to apply the remain living principle based on its origin purpose and what they experience this lead to.

We performed our study through qualitative approach and conducted six semi structured interviews with case makers who worked at least five years as case makers for older people according to Socialtjänstlagen. The result shows that the remain living principle is applied in a different way today than before, because of the organisations and the municipality´s guidelines and directives based on the municipality´s economy and resources are increasingly restricting the case makers discretion. Which according to the case makers leads to their professional judgment being disregarded and that the elderly does not always have a choice if they want to stay at home or not.

    Abstract [en]

This is a qualitative interview study with the aim of examining the middle school teachers' perceptions and experiences of talking to pupils about child maltreatment at home, as well as their experiences of how collaboration with the social services works. Data was collected with semi-structured interviews and the respondents consisted of six middle school teachers from different municipalities in Central Sweden. The results showed that all teachers considered it important to discuss child maltreatment with pupils in school. What could be perceived as an obstacle to raise the subject in school was that teachers lack knowledge about the subject, there is a lack of resources and some respondents thought it was a difficult subject to talk about. The results also show that the school's collaboration with the social services needs to be developed and improved. The study shows that more knowledge and more resources are needed to be able to inform children in grades 4-6 about maltreatmentat home in a more structured and functional way.
