Den monstruösa naturen: En ekokritisk analys av fyra skräcknoveller2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Reader-Response Criticism and the Internet: A Methodological Discussion

This article explores connections between Internet-based research and reader-response criticism, aiming to critically discuss the methodologies used in this particular field of research. First, the history of reader-response studies is briefly presented, with reference to theorists such as Richards, Rosenblatt, Robbe-Grillet, Iser and Jauss. It is noted that, for the past 15 years, people have utilised the Internet as a basis for the discussion of literary and reading-related topics. Researchers in this field may access reviews and commentaries on open web-based venues such as personal homepages, blogs and online forums (i.e. message boards and discussion sites). The material available on these sites is interesting because of its "spontaneous" nature; that is, such material has been formulated and uploaded without the interference of the researcher.

The article presents one concrete example of an Internet-based reader-response study, discussing a number of pros and cons of the chosen methodology– including some important ethical considerations that arise when the researcher’s corpus is composed of material taken from the Internet. One of the conclusions of the paper is that many aspects of the general public’s web-based responses to literature are yet to be explored by the research community.

"Jag satt till bords med de bästa". Interkulturella möten i Vilhelm Ekelunds verk2015In: European Journal of Scandinavian Studies, ISSN 2191-9399, E-ISSN 2191-9402, Vol. 45, no 1, 35-59 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The Swedish poet, essayist and aphorist Vilhelm Ekelund wrote extensively on the topic of foreign authors. Some of these writers represent the Greek and Roman cultural heritage; some belong to the modern-day literary canon. This article investigates the nature of these “intercultural encounters” in Ekelund’s body of work. By processing data from Andar i den Ekelundska sfären (1989) and Konkordans till Vilhelm Ekelunds skrifter (2000), we have been able to count all references made to the most important individuals appearing in Ekelund’s texts. At the top end of the table we find such prominent writers as Goethe (1343 references), Nietzsche (985) and Plato (503 references). We show that Ekelund’s oeuvre is largely dominated by male authors and philosophers of Western cultural heritage: the most prominently figured foreign nationalities being German (20,7%), Greek (10,1%), French (9,2%) and Roman (5,4%) writers. The quantitative method applied in our study is a good complement to more textcentered approaches to literature. In this case, it allows us to determine, with a great deal of accuracy, the extent and nature of the intercultural encounters in Vilhelm Ekelund’s body of work.

    Abstract [fr]

    Abstract [en]

‘Abd al Salām Al-‘Ujaylī was one of the most productive and versatile literary figures in twentieth century Syria. His experiences both as a medical doctor and a politician fed into his fictional output, which is most often characterized as realism. Al-‘Ujaylī is considered one of the earliest writers of fiction in Syria. Among his over forty publications are novels, poetry collections, theatre plays, travelogues, essays and auto-biographies. His preferred genre however remained the short story.

"Jag är bara här tillfälligt": Identitetsskapande i arbetarromaner från 2010-talet av Sara Beischer och Jack Hildén2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    helt utan betydelse

(2009) av Johan Kling. Syftet är att studera hur alienation

gestaltas i romanen.

    Abstract [it]

In the recent years, in Italy there has been a quite important — and in some cases considerable — success of the so–called “migrant writers” who have chosen Italian as mean to represent their “other” identity or, more simply, to express their literary creativity. The result of this choice gives rise to the phenomenon of “linguistic hybridization” that is to say the creation of a multi–level language that is influenced by the mother tongue and culture of the author. On the basis of the models offered by Critical Discourse Stylistics, I try to define the textual factors and the stylistic features of the migration and postcolonial literature, and I dwell in particular on the ways in which the voices and points of view of the narrator and characters are expressed and represented in the text. Given the heterogeneity of the corpus of my investigation, I take into consideration the cultural differences of the authors, since in a critical perspective it is necessary to distinguish between writers from former Italian colonies (mothertongue and/or bilingual speakers) and migrant writers tout court, who have assimilated the Italian language and culture after having moved to Italy.

Donde reside la historia: Un análisis de los rasgos alegóricos en La soledad era esto2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [es]

Transcultural Identity Constructions in a Changing World2016Collection (editor) (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This volume takes a broad outlook on the concept of transculturality. Contributions from 19 authors and specialists, of almost as many diverse origins, grapple with this concept, each in their own way. How can transculturality be described? How can it help us understand our world? Many of the chapters deal with literary texts, others with the stories told in movies, drama, and visual art. There are texts about the complexity of the European Burqa-Ban debate, the negative aspects of Portuguese multiculturalism, or the border-crossing experiences of Filipino immigrants in Ireland. Several chapters examine stereotypes, the idea of movement, the dissolution of cultural borders, or the nature of bilingual writing. It is a unique contribution to the field, on a virtually global scale.

Transcultural Identities in Contemporary Literature2013Collection (editor) (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In recent decades, globalization has led to increased mobility and interconnectedness. For a growing number of people, contemporary life entails new local and transnational interdependencies which transform individual and collective allegiances. Contemporary literature often reflects these changes through its exploration of migrant experiences and transcultural identities. Calling into question traditional definitions of culture, many recent works of poetry and prose fiction go beyond the spatial boundaries of a given state, emphasizing instead the mixing and collision of languages, cultures, and identities. In doing so, they also challenge recent and contemporary discourses about cultural identities, fostering a more nuanced understanding of the complexities of identity-formation processes in diverse transcultural frameworks. This volume analyses how traditional understandings of culture, as well as literary representations of identity constructs, can be reconceptualized from a transcultural perspective. In four thematic sections focusing on migration, cosmopolitanism, multiculturalism, and literary translingualism, the twelve essays included in this volume explore various facets of transculturality in contemporary poetry and fiction from around the world.

“The Athens of the Land”: Autonomous colonial authority among Ulster folk2012Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

One of the most accomplished literary, scientific and cultural treatises on the Giant’s Causeway and the north coast of Ireland is William Hamilton Drummond’s 1811 epic work, The Giant’s Causeway. A work in which Drummond repeatedly promotes Belfast as a ‘northern Athens’; a civic authority to rival Edinburgh and Dublin. This paper will explore how Drummond uses the classical characteristics of the epic genre and British georgic-based verse to enhance the poem’s declamatory and authoritative voice, as a means to construct and perform a new vision of Ulster’s ascendance within post-rebellion / post-Union Ireland. In a letter to the Bishop of Dromore, Thomas Percy, in 1784, William Jessop appears to articulate Irish Ascendancy fears when he states,

The Ultonians are Scots […] we are genuine Irish […] we look upon Ulster as one grand volcano, ready every moment to shake the earth around it, and pour forth its burning lava. In the south the climate and the people are milder. Potatoes are a cooling diet; oaten bread and whisky are combustibles.

Drummond’s poem may be read as a riposte of sorts to this indictment, appropriating the languages of ethnicity, agriculture, environment and geology to promote an enlightened Ulster. Drummond champions a Presbyterian-led and mercantile-sponsored coterie of scholars in Belfast, as the erudite guardians of this now quiescent region within Ireland and within the new Union. Yet under this new guise, the activities of the North’s rural cotter-class as they appear in The Giant’s Causeway – mediated by georgic-verse conventions to extol the north of Ireland’s productive energies – seem to become synonymous with a passive and fecund landscape, meaning that at times the poetic persona drifts alarmingly close to a language of autonomous colonial authority. Ultimately this analysis of The Giant’s Causeway using Ulster-Scots Criticism and Ecocriticism will attempt to offer further means of negotiating Irish history and culture during an intense period of change in Ireland.

Från bok till film - The Hunger Games: En karaktärs- och miljöanalys2013Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

El olvido: Análisis temático de la novela De amor y de sombra2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The realistic novel De amor y de sombra (Of Love and Shadows), by the author Isabel Allende, describes how a young couple fights against the “legalized injustice” in a fictive place that allude to Chile during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. An underlying but crucial theme in the novel is the oblivion – individual, collective and imposed. Therefore we will show by this analysis how the oblivion is presented in the novel De amor y de sombra. The hypothesis that guides our study, is that the oblivion has a greater purpose – to bring out the importance of remember the past. Through a hermeneutic method, we will found our analysis on three theories of oblivion and social oblivion when analyzing characters and occurrences in the novel. Hence, in the conclusion the hypothesis is confirmed, together with the fact that the novel by Isabel Allende makes a statement of the importance of remembering the past.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is, based on a narratological perspective, to analyze and interpret the novel written by Astrid Lindgren: Mio, min Mio. It is based on the legacy of the folktale tradition, which is also the basis for carnival concept according to Bachtin. The study is based on a narrative model of Gérard Genette. Mio, min Mio is told as a first person narrator and can be interpreted as Bo tells it to himself. It is a frame story in which the outer story is the reality, while the inner story is the structure of the folktale where Mio embarks on a predetermined mission to fight against evil. Carnival concept involves a timed up-and-down-turn that is sanctioned and controlled, this fits well with this story seen from this interpretation. In the fantasy world everything has an idealized counterpart and Bo is, via Mio, in this world for a limited time. Children in our society are powerless, but are allowed to be mighty in children's literature. The story gets a subversive effect as it shows that adult standards are not absolute. Even if Bo turns back to his foster parents, he goes through this inner battle processing his thoughts and feelings. The love Bo will experience in imagination gives him the power to manage his real situation.
