Lorca y el fauvismo: El color en el espacio escénico de Bodas de Sangre2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [es]

Den monstruösa naturen: En ekokritisk analys av fyra skräcknoveller2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

A Hyperreal Chinese Society: An Analysis of Xia Jia’s Six Views of a Spring Festival with Baudrillard’s Simulacra and Simulation2024Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis examines Xia Jia's short story Six Views of a Spring Festival through the lens of Jean Baudrillard's theory of hyperreality. The story, set around the time of a Spring Festival in near-future China, juxtaposes traditional Chinese culture and customs with modern technologies, offering a microcosm of the ongoing societal changes in contemporary China. By employing Baudrillard's framework, the thesis explores how the simulacra and simulations depicted in the story create a hyperreal environment where the distinction between reality and its representation becomes indistinguishable. This analysis also examines how the short story portrays a China affected by deep changes caused by rapid economic and technological development. Xia Jia’s employment of holograms and other technologies as simulacra highlight the impact advanced technologies has on the Chinese daily lives. At the same time, her narrative serves as commentary on the prevalence of consumer culture in contemporary China. Driven by both consumerism and technological progress, a hyperreal Chinese society is emerging. The research wishes to contribute to the growing field of Chinese science fiction studies by highlighting how the genre can function as a tool for understanding the complexities of contemporary Chinese society.

Reader-Response Criticism and the Internet: A Methodological Discussion

This article explores connections between Internet-based research and reader-response criticism, aiming to critically discuss the methodologies used in this particular field of research. First, the history of reader-response studies is briefly presented, with reference to theorists such as Richards, Rosenblatt, Robbe-Grillet, Iser and Jauss. It is noted that, for the past 15 years, people have utilised the Internet as a basis for the discussion of literary and reading-related topics. Researchers in this field may access reviews and commentaries on open web-based venues such as personal homepages, blogs and online forums (i.e. message boards and discussion sites). The material available on these sites is interesting because of its "spontaneous" nature; that is, such material has been formulated and uploaded without the interference of the researcher.

The article presents one concrete example of an Internet-based reader-response study, discussing a number of pros and cons of the chosen methodology– including some important ethical considerations that arise when the researcher’s corpus is composed of material taken from the Internet. One of the conclusions of the paper is that many aspects of the general public’s web-based responses to literature are yet to be explored by the research community.

    Abstract [en]

The Swedish poet, essayist and aphorist Vilhelm Ekelund wrote extensively on the topic of foreign authors. Some of these writers represent the Greek and Roman cultural heritage; some belong to the modern-day literary canon. This article investigates the nature of these “intercultural encounters” in Ekelund’s body of work. By processing data from Andar i den Ekelundska sfären (1989) and Konkordans till Vilhelm Ekelunds skrifter (2000), we have been able to count all references made to the most important individuals appearing in Ekelund’s texts. At the top end of the table we find such prominent writers as Goethe (1343 references), Nietzsche (985) and Plato (503 references). We show that Ekelund’s oeuvre is largely dominated by male authors and philosophers of Western cultural heritage: the most prominently figured foreign nationalities being German (20,7%), Greek (10,1%), French (9,2%) and Roman (5,4%) writers. The quantitative method applied in our study is a good complement to more textcentered approaches to literature. In this case, it allows us to determine, with a great deal of accuracy, the extent and nature of the intercultural encounters in Vilhelm Ekelund’s body of work.

    Abstract [fr]

    Abstract [fr]

    Abstract [en]

‘Abd al Salām Al-‘Ujaylī was one of the most productive and versatile literary figures in twentieth century Syria. His experiences both as a medical doctor and a politician fed into his fictional output, which is most often characterized as realism. Al-‘Ujaylī is considered one of the earliest writers of fiction in Syria. Among his over forty publications are novels, poetry collections, theatre plays, travelogues, essays and auto-biographies. His preferred genre however remained the short story.

"Jag är bara här tillfälligt": Identitetsskapande i arbetarromaner från 2010-talet av Sara Beischer och Jack Hildén2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Two Sides of the Same Coin: Understanding Homophobia in The Strange Case of Dr.Jekyll and Mr. Hyde2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis has used a Queer approach in an attempt to explore that double as  a literary element is used to show a homophobic society in Stevenson’s The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The narrative of the novel shows homoerotic codes when the novel is observed through a Queer reading, although homosexuality is never explicitly exposed. This thesis discussed the split character of Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde, which represents a form of suppressed homosexuality that is the result of a homophobic society and internalized homophobia. This was done by analyzing the protagonists and some of the main social factors that that helped to spread homophobia: religious motives, law, the threat of violation of social values, and secret fear of being homosexual.

Ultimately the analysis of this thesis helped to reveal a homophobic society in the novel, representing late Victorian society. Consequently in late Victorian society in the novel, the social, religious and legal repression of homosexuality led to internalized homophobia, and a tendency for homosexuals to internalize forms of self-loathing and self-damage, which is represented in the duality of Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde.

En analys av alienation i romanen Människor heltutan betydelse av Johan Kling2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    helt utan betydelse

(2009) av Johan Kling. Syftet är att studera hur alienation

gestaltas i romanen.

    Abstract [en]

This paper is a statistical study of the quantitative evolution of the manifesto between 1886 and 2009, seeking its “golden eras” and a validation of all that it was purported to be. This study, based on contents from the Manart database of twentieth century literary and artistic manifestoes, compares two corpuses yielded by different selection criteria. Indeed, only a contrastive study of manifestoes relying both on approaches and data can present unquestionable and reasonably objective results.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the dissertation is to study the idea of teaching literature as a means of democratic fostering in relation to the ideal of measurable knowledge prominent in contemporary policy discourse. In focus is the reform of the Swedish upper secondary school in 2011, viewed against the background of the major developments in global and European education policy discourse during the 2000s. The study examines how the interconnections between subject and society are understood in relation to the teaching of literature by different actors in the education system. The analysis is divided into a transnational level, a national level, and a didactic level. The study also shows how policy discourses are recontextualized between these levels.

On the transnational level, the study argues that the EU’s educational policies increasingly stress economic gains, while at the same time lowering its democratic ambitions. The benefits of entrepreneurship are highlighted by the EU, and creative dimensions of the arts and humanities are seen as valuable for economic growth. In the framework for the PISA tests conducted by the OECD, reading literacy is considered important both to critical thinking and economic development. The reading of fiction, however, is singled out by the OECD as a recreational activity. By addressing the reading of fiction as an individual and psychological, rather than societal and structural, concern, its emancipatory value is further depoliticized.

On the national level, the study shows how the concepts of democracy and the teaching of literature in the Swedish school have undergone changes since the 1940s. Most importantly, democracy has gradually come to be understood as a completed project rather than a critical concept. Theories on teaching literature as a means of democratic fostering are analysed through Gert Biesta’s three dimensions of citizenship education. As I argue, most of these theories emphasize democratic fostering as socialization rather than subjectification. In other words: they do not challenge society but promote an adaption to it. Using Peter Dahler- Larsen’s concept of constitutive effects, the study also shows how the school reform in 2011 de-emphasised democratic dimensions of the teaching of literature as compared to the previous curriculum.

On the didactic level, the study uses qualitative interviews to show how teachers’ pedagogical choices are affected by administrative duties and the curriculum. As I argue, the teachers’ interpretation of the written curriculum serves as a means of negotiating with governing policies. In several cases, teachers downplay the relevance of the written curriculum and instead base their pedagogical choices on personal work experiences.

The concluding chapter suggests that an important political implication of teaching literature as a means of democratic fostering – in particular when subjected to expectations of measurability – is the marginalisation of the educational dimension of subjectification. Instead of an education centred on core values and measurable competencies, I argue for a pedagogy that recognizes the pupil’s need to be exposed for uncertainties.

Tranströmer och det politiska2020Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

During the last few decades, the concept of ”literacy” has had a growing impact on the vast fields of education. Although the uses of the concept are multifaceted and diverse, the hegemonic policy discourse as supported by the OECD treats literacy as an individual competence closely tied to the development of explicit reading strategies. This article examines what the concept of literacy means for literary studies in general and literature education in particular. We argue that there are reasons to critically reflect upon the effects

of invoking the concept of literacy in the field of literature education. With the aid of theorists like Rita Felski and Toril Moi, our main focus is to examine the risks of centering attention on the ”subject” (the student and his/her abilities) instead of the ”object” (in our case, the works of fiction). By turning to Gert Biesta and Emmanuel Lévinas, we argue that there is an educational value in acknowledging and appreciating what lies beyond the scope of the student’s immediate understanding.

    Abstract [sv]
