A conversão de D. José Brandão de Castro: a ação social de mediadores religiosos na Diocese de Propriá2004Licentiate thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation looked for to study the charisma of the religious mediator us " Movements of Christianity of Liberation " in the Diocese Sergipana of Propriá, during the decade from sixty to eighty. Centering our debate in the understanding of the social action, we have as main subject to understand the " poor " influence in the adoption of actions on the part of the mediators, in that public's favor, mainly in Fazenda Betume conflicts (1974) and of Santana dos Frades (1979). The hypotheses, we became pregnant that the mediators as D. José Brandão de Castro and the nun Maria Joana Hermínia exercised an important influence in the construction of the identity of the movements as CEBs, MEB and CPT in the area. Such influence was motivated by a conversion of the mediator D. Brandão, constituted starting from a relationship maintained between him and the members of the movements and proportionate for the critics and demands done by the popular ones. They resulted in actions in favor of the rural ones, what characterized the Church of Propriá as allied of the involved in the conflicts and no mere middleman. Before the collected material, we made use of the Analysis of Content using the poor " term " as analysis category, complemented by interviews done to members of the mentioned movements.

    Abstract [pt]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this presentation is to discuss how teacher’s leadership can be used as a teaching method in language course distance. The environments that offer online courses provide a wide field for discussion of the contact teacher and student. My intention is to contribute to debate on teacher’s leadership in online courses. In my earlier studies on leadership, I have had as objective to investigate how leadership can affect different social movement in Brazil that was active under the military dictatorship (1964-1985). By examining the three tip of legitimacy described by Weber (1964), I could make an overview of the tip of the leadership that was characterized by religious leaders. Thus, I examine how teacher leadership, as a vehicle for their message can use their educational leadership skills to get students to achieve learning outcomes in their course. This issue is part of the research project “Teaching Methods in web-based language teaching-mapping” and it´s financed by NGL-center from the Dalarna University.

A transcultural analysis of the construction of social movements’ identity in Brazil: the construction of identity within social movements such as the Christian Base Communities (CBCs), the Comissão Pastoral da Terra (CPT) and the Movimento de Educação Popular (MEB), in Brazil2014In: List of Abstracts for Conference Transcultural Identity Constructions in a Changing World Dalarna University, Sweden, April 2-4, 2014, Falun: Högskolan Dalarna, 2014Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This presentation will analyze the construction of identity within social movements such as the Christian Base Communities (CBCs), the Comissão Pastoral da Terra (CPT) and the Movimento de Educação Popular (MEB), in Brazil. This analysis of identity uses a transcultural perspective. It is based on my master dissertation that discussed how two catholic leaders influenced the construction of identity within these movements. The movements were involved in many conflicts over land ownership in Propriá, Sergipe, from 1970 to 1985. The primary question in the dissertation was on the one hand how the charisma (Weber, 2000) of the religious leaders Maria Herminia Gogo and the bishop D. Brandão de Castro exerted influence on the construction of identity within these movements. On the other hand it discussed how the demand of the poor and their critique influenced the religious leaders´ position.  The collected material consisted of the letters, written texts, newspaper articles, and Bishop José Brandão’s diary in which he recounts his experience with the conflicts over land. I made use of the Analysis of Content (Bardin, 1977) and complemented with interviews with members of the mentioned movements. The conclusion was that the participation of the leaders in conflicts and the criticisms received lead to a redefinition of identity of religious leaders and movements.

Teacher’s leadership in web-based language courses in Dalarna University, Sweden2012In: International conference “ICT for Language Learning”: Conference Proceedings, Florence, Italy: Libreriauniversitaria.it , 2012, p. 411-413Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this presentation is to discuss how teacher’s leadership can be used as a teaching method in web based language education. The environments that offer online courses provide a wide field for discussion on the contact between teacher and student. My intention is to contribute to the debate on teacher leadership in online courses. In my earlier studies on leadership, I have explored how some religious leaders affected different social movements in Brazil during the military dictatorship (1964-1985). Pruth (2004) by examining the three kinds of legitimacy described by Max Weber I aimed at seeing and analyzing how religious leaders used different teaching methods to explain their messages to ordinary citizens. Thus my research showed how educational leadership is a way to get people to reach their goals. I became interested in the subject teacher’s leadership whenI participated in a survey of the teaching methods of language courses in Dalarna University which is funded by the NGL Center of Dalarna University. In  this project, we have made interviews with the teachers, undertaken the course plans (in the language department at Dalarna University) and categorized the learning outcomes. A questionnaire was constructed based on the learning outcomes and then either sent out remotely to teachers or completed face to face through interviews. The answers provided to the questionnaires enabled the  project to identify many differences in how language teachers interact with their students but  also, the way of giving feedback, motivating and helping students, types of class activities and materials used. This made me aware of how teachers use their leadership or not in their teaching. My focus is to look at the relationship between teachers and students as an important part of the development and quality of online courses. The teacher's performance on campus is different from online courses. I want to understand how the contact between teachers and students in online courses develop and look at how students can make use of this contact and what influence the teacher's leadership has on the ability for the students to achieve the goals of their course

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to discuss the evaluation of a higher education course offered by a Swedish university. The article is based on a review of the assessments made by students in the years 2011-2012: the content of the course and the lessons, and the relationship between the teacher and the students. The course analyzed is Contemporary Brazil, at the University of Dalarna. The course is offered as part of the EBW (Web Based Education) and undergraduate Portuguese. The conclusions reached, based on the analysis of the questionnaires, indicate a need of systematization of the content and better exposure of the content to the students. The students, a majority of them not from Brazil, had a limited perception of the reality in Brazil before entering the course. When confronted with the course literature, the perception and image of Brazil was reviewed and redefined. However, the evaluations point at the need to develop and promote group works and discussions that helps the student to grasp and understand the course literature. This is an important challenge for web based education in Swedish higher education.

    Abstract [en]

This paper presents a research project that is being conducted at Dalarna University in Sweden. The aim is to study the following: 1) The quality of online language education compared with that of campus education, and 2) Advantages and disadvantages of online language education and how the disadvantages might be overcome. The project consists of two parts: pedagogical methods in online language education from the teachers’ point of view and from the students’ point of view. The first part was conducted in 2012 and various characteristics (benefits and difficulties) of online language education were identified. Flexibility and wider opportunities were general benefits, while lack of physical co-presence, difficulty in having lively debates/discussions, and high dropout rates were among the problems. The second part of the project (being conducted in 2014) aims to investigate how students experience online language learning. The goal is to explore alignments and misalignments between teachers’ perspectives and students’ perspectives, and to develop methods to enhance the quality of online education.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this presentation is to introduce the research project progress in “the mapping of pedagogical methods in web-based language teaching" by Högskolan Dalarna (Dalarna University). This project will identify the differences in pedagogical methods that are used for online language classes. The pedagogical method defined in this project is what the teachers do to ensure students attain the learning outcomes, for example, planning, designing courses, leading students, knowing students' abilities, implementing activities, etc. So far the members of this project have analyzed the course plans (in the language department at Dalarna University) and categorized the learning outcomes. This presentation introduces the progress of the project and identifies the challenges at the language department at Dalarna University. Finally, the advantages and problems of online language proficiency courses will be discussed and suggestions made for future improvement.
