    Abstract [en]

An increasing number of industrial manufacturing companies have made the transition to

offer solutions, that include both its products and services for their customers rather than

the products itself. Service is considered a lasting source of competitive advantage due to

the difficulty to imitate by competitors. Today the field Service is a part of the

aftermarket as companies traditionally offer them as a complement to their product. It is

regarded to be difficult to manage, a necessary evil and despite investing a large amount

of resources into it there are few that fully grasps its potential. Failing to manage the

aftermarket and service is not only an economic risk, but it also risks worsening the

relationship between the company and its customers. One reason the aftermarket is so

difficult to manage is due to customers value services differently, thus complicate the

definition of value. The different characteristics of products and services are contributing

factors to why companies have difficulties to interpret and supply value to its customers.

The concept of Servitization is the transformation that traditional manufacturing

companies undergo to offer solutions of products and services. It is crucial that the

companies understand the challenge they face. Moving away from the todays productoriented

approach to instead take on a holistic perspective where service has an equal

central role as the product is necessary, but often complicated. To begin this

transformation, a first step is to develop a business plan for service alone, where the core

is the company’s value offer. Previous research on what factors are crucial when

developing a new business model within Servitization, as well what is valued by both

companies and customers is lacking, therefore was this study conducted.

The case study is conducted at a Swedish industrial manufacturing company, which

manufactures complex products. The purpose is to examine what factors that are

important, both internally and externally, when developing a business model for service.

From this study three primary factors have been identified. The first is the necessity to

separate services from other fields, to avoid the prejudice of a product-focused

organization. Second, develop distinct packages of services to aid the company to

demonstrate the value that services generate for its customers. The third is to regard the

field of service as a part of its core market and not as an aftermarket.

Four-dimensional concurrent engineering - an extended theoretical framework integrating packaging2019Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This paper takes on the challenge to integrate packaging in a concept of four-dimensional concurrent engineering (4DCE). The purpose is to explore a conceptual model and empirically evaluate the specific performance of packaging in interrelation with product and processes in the Supply Chain (SC). The objectives are to better understand the concepts of packaging logistics and logistics management in the SC. The conceptual model 4DCE is developed based on the three-dimensional concurrent engineering theories. The tool Packaging Scorecard is applied to evaluate the concurrent performance of packaging throughout the SC. The packaging system involves many actors that are integrated into the 4DCE framework with focus on interaction of SC and logistics in relation to packaging and product, with the overall aim to operate as effectively and efficiently as possible. In order to explore the potential of the 4DCE framework, empirical verification and testing of the concept has been carried out. The process has been done through multiple in-depth, action-oriented case studies in three different industries on the Swedish market. The case studies covered holistic aspects on the packaging system. The concept 4DCE contributes to packaging logistics theory by providing a framework for assessment incorporating complex and dynamic interactions between product, packaging, logistics and SC. Furthermore, the holistic packaging development concept is ensured by increasing knowledge of the packaging system and how it interacts with actors and performs to fulfil requirements along the SC. The 4DCE provides valuable data for packaging development processes in the cases, however there is a need for broader studies in different industries.

    Abstract [en]

Something that is often used in both industry and trade is inventory. In this work, a study has been conducted as to whether the industrial method The Visual Workplace can be adapted for use in retail trade industry. This might be extra interesting for businesses that conduct online commerce or trade behind the counter as these types of companies are most similar to the example in this work. The company that represents the trade industry in this work is Kronans apotek AB. This pharmacy is currently experiencing deficiencies in their inventory management, which results in lack of quality assurance. Consequences of this are that the staff cannot know for sure if the product sought is found in the notified storage area which impairs efficiency and productivity. The Visual Workplace aims to visualize work standards and routines. In this way, activities that do not add any value are eliminated while at the same time problems and deviations are immediately visible. This study will explore how this industrial method can be adapted to Kronan's pharmacy.

Reflektioner kring en högre utbildning som lägger grunden för bildade företagsekonomer2020In: Högre Utbildning, E-ISSN 2000-7558, Vol. 10, no 2, p. 55-65Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

Smart online grocery delivery and peri-urbanconsumers’ attitudes2018Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: To explore consumers’ attitudes towards e-commerce, in particular online grocery shopping, and its delivery in non-dense areas for the purpose of designing smart last-mile solutions.

Approach: The state-of-the-art of smart e-commerce delivery in dense areas was identified by a review of the literature. It was expected that this knowledge could be transferred to non-dense areas. This prediction was examined and explored further by making use of four focus groups recruited in a Swedish mid-sized town.

Findings: Respondents were generally positive towards e-commerce, although mixed attitudes were found with regard to online grocery shopping. Further, the willingness to pay for flexible, smart and sustainable delivery was low, with a notable exception for local produce.

Originality: The knowledge acquired and solution developed in dense areas is not readily transferred to non-dense areas. There is scope for developing new Business Models for the supply chain of local produce. For the prototype testing and roll-out of smart e-commerce delivery platforms, the online local produce market is recommended.

    Abstract [en]

Transport and travel is necessary for our society to function. Today, the privately owned car stands for more than half of all personal trips in Sweden. In the last couple of years researchers have highlighted the idea that personal transport is facing a paradigm shift, which means a reduction in the use and dependent of the privately owned car and an increased focus on individuals buying their Mobility as a Service (MaaS). MaaS is described as an integrated mix of different mobility services which are arranged in the form of customized mobility packages to the customer. These mobility packages can be compared to a mobile phone subscription, which includes various mobility services, such as train, bus, subway, taxi, carpool, etc. in various amounts depending on the individual's changing needs. The individual can take care of their own travel planning, booking and payment via an app in their smartphone. What distinguish MaaS from other mobility services is that the customer can travel from door-to-door instead of a predefine station to another.

There have been various Maas projects around the world in order to increase understanding of the concept of MaaS, there is still a lot of unanswered questions and researchers would like to see more studies in the field, in order to find factors that are important and vital to the concept MaaS.

The aim of the thesis is to: Discuss some competences that may be significant for the further development of the concept Maas in Sweden and discuss potential challenges that may arise at further development of the concept MaaS in Sweden.

This study is based on previous research and experiences and thoughts on the concept MaaS from various stakeholders with knowledge and experience of the concept.

This study has an abductive approach. Primary data were obtained through qualitative semistructured interviews with eight people who have knowledge and experience of the Maas.

The main conclusions in this study is that the competences that are most important in the development of MaaS is collaborative skills and competences required to create an attractive mobility package based on customer needs.

One challenge identified in this study is the challenge of creating individualized mobility package in which different types of mobility services are integrated. Another challenge can arise when public and private organizations collaborate and when new organizations enter the transport network and try to cooperate with the established organizations

Damm- och mögelförekomst vid hantering av skogsbränsle2013Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Effects of central bank independence reforms on inflation in different parts of the world2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of CBI-reforms on inflation in different parts of the world from a theoretical and empirical perspective. Compared to previous studies, this study focuses on whether CBI-reforms have different effects on reducing inflation in different parts of the world. The study is based on a 132 country data-set from 1980 to 2005 compiled by Daunfeldt et al. (2008). The result indicates that the reduction in inflation due to the CBI-reforms varies between 2.2 and 12.32 percentage points in Asia, Europe, South America and Oceania, supporting the claim that implementing CBI-reforms can be successful in reducing inflation in most of the parts of the world.

Undersökning av teknik från Industri 4.0 för implementering på intern logistik2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The demands and complexities in the manufacturing industry are increasing, but at

the same time, the rapid technological advances have opened up a number of new

opportunities. The new Industrial concept 4.0 paves the way for smart factories

where machines, products and processes can communicate with each other. ABB's

HVDC department in Ludvika lives on its cutting edge competence and in order

for their operations to remain, it is necessary to be at the forefront of development.

They have launched an initiative to improve the flow of materials in their storage

    and from storage to production.

The purpose of the study is: "Examine if it is possible to implement smart

solutions from Industry 4.0, to solve problems arising from manual handling in

material flow and material handling in and between storage and production in a

    manufacturing company."

The first step was to identify the current issues in the material flow. In order to

succeed, observations and interviews were conducted in the business. This data

was then used to make an analysis and to raise potential problems. Subsequently,

studies in industry 4.0 were conducted to find applicable new technology.

Based on the current situation and interviews, three problem areas were

discovered. The inventory accounting, the delivery process and the picking

process. These issues were analyzed and offered solution proposals involving

RFID tags, smart storage and transportation of materials using robots. The analysis

also resulted in a comprehensive solution that would lead to a fully automated

material flow from incoming goods to production. The conclusion of the study was

that an implementation of active RFID tags and readers in the business would lead

to increased control of materials and greater opportunities for future development.

But it’s hard to justify the implementation of robots or smart storage if the amount

of material moving in the business is too small and the distance between storage

    and production is too short.

En studie av hur ett mindre företag som verkar på eninternationell marknad organiserar sin marknadsföring: - En fallstudie på Dellner Brakes AB2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Many companies with different sizes are nowadays doing business on the international

market, and the conditions to meet the competition varies. To be a smaller enterprise in the

international market requires a unique offer to attract customers and stand out in the market.

Business agreements are done between individuals and not companies and the human

relations between the stakeholders are of great importance. To create effective business

processes, it is important to have a clear strategy and structure within the marketing work to

become a leading player in the market.

The aim of this thesis is to investigate how a smaller enterprise organizes it’s marketing to

operate on a international market. Is it possible to bring and combine different and accepted

methods to improve and consolidate the structure of the marketing for a smaller enterprise

that operates on the international market with limited resources?

The study has been done with a qualitative interview method, using the personal and semi

structured format, with five respondents within the organization of the study object. The

interviews constitute an important part of the study and are presented in the result report.

Other empirical sources are background information about the organization, from websites

and from background information from contacts at the Company. Supporting evidence has

been drawn from literature resources relating to industrial marketing, supply chain, processes

    and key performance indexes.

The result shows how the Company organizes the marketing and how it handles customers

and relations as well as the methods and ways of working that the Company is using. The

recommendation is that Dellner Brakes AB should define the sales process where they

improve, measure, streamline and quality assure the entire marketing process. It is also

recommended to develop the existing CRM-system or to implement a new and more ”fit for

    purpose” system.

Värdering av potentiella kunder: En studie på teknikkonsultföretag2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Customer relations is an important parameter for companies to be competitive, then it

is important to know what resources are needed to initiate and manage a relationship

and the consequences of it. Studies show that it is important for companies to focus

on relationships that not only involve direct financial gain but also those who

contribute with other values such as marketing or access to new technologies.

This thesis describes how three different consulting engineering companies work with

the valuation of potential customers. We have come to the conclusion that in the

present situation these consulting engineering companies have no general approach to

the valuation of potential customers. However, we believe that it is possible to

develop a general methodology for this that would clarify the conditions and thus

facilitate decision-making. It is crucial that companies have the resources needed to

invest in the relationship in question.

Identifiering av kvalitetsbristkostnader i Kallvalsverket: En kostnadsstudie hos SSABs Kallvalsverk i Borlänge2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Projektarbete i praktiken: Hur kan oförutsedda problem vid projektöverlämningen minimeras2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Projects occur at many companies, and even with clearly described procedures about the projects workflow it happens that the supplier and customer, are not in agreement when the project product is handed over. Sometimes it is changes during the project that is the root to problems but often it is the communication that flaws between the parties. By interviewing a few different companies, and analyzing how they work in the projects we have noted, from the interviewed companies point of view, that communication is key to maintain and create healthy relations.

One approach is to work with a project internal problems can be platforms that allow the sharing of information between different project members. One approach is that it will be easier for project participants to be able to share the information with a hope to minimize misunderstandings within the project.

Skapa förutsättningar för att implementera Lean production i en tillverkningsprocess som kännetecknas av HVLV: - En fallstudie på Tibrokök Sverige AB2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Today it is common for companies to compete with products that include a tangible good that has been extended with different intangible services to satisfy customer needs. Along with this the product complexity increases and there are higher requirement on suppliers.

This development has led to that many companies manufacture products with high variation and must work completely customer order-driven to meet customers increasing demands.

The companies that manufacture these complex products have a production characterized by high variety and low volume which is designated by the abbreviation HVLV. The challenge for HVLV companies is to have a high product flexibility with low use of resources. To improve efficiency, many companies have thus been interested in Lean production that has proven to be a successful concept for manufacturing companies around the world that have increased their productivity and efficiency.

Numerous articles have drawn attention to limitations when Lean production have been implemented in HVLV environments. Articles also indicates the need for further research into the applicability of Lean Production in HVLV environments and this was the emergence of the thesis background and purpose.

A case study has been conducted on Tibrokök which is a company with a completely order-driven production characterized by HVLV. Using the case study aims the thesis to examine if the tools process mapping incl. time studies and layout flow diagram may help to create the conditions for the implementation of lean production in a single manufacturing process within a HVLV environment.

Although the tools have to be slightly adapted they are considered to be successful and contributing to the creation of conditions for the implementation of lean production in this HVLV environment. This is because we could identify many reasons to waste, and develop a proposal that creates efficiencies of Tibrokök’s surface finishing process in the future state.

Identifiering av lämpliga organisations- och ägarformer för Dalarnas Science Park2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Foundation Teknikdalen has ambitions to undergo a transition and become Dalarna's Science Park. In order to implement this, we need a basis for determining what organizational and ownership form as Dalarna's Science Park should have. The purpose is to identify which organizational and ownership forms that may be suitable for Dalarna's Science Park. The substrate must also account for appropriate funding opportunities that are associated with the various organizational and ownership forms and how regional cooperation should occur in Dalarna's Science Park. The regional cooperation which can be found in the Dalarna's Science Park is bounded in this work to the cooperation between the business community and high school, with a Science Park as a potential node.

Through surveys, interviews with representative from Science parks in Sweden and key persons in Dalarna, materials were gathered that later could be analyzed with consideration to the works purpose and where Stiftelsen Teknikdalen is today. Depending on what Dalarna Science Park wants to achieve, there are different paths to go when it comes down to organization- and ownership form. Dalarna Science Park is going to operate regional and with that considered it indicates that a limited company is the most suitable organization form for them, based on the collected material. One of the pros is the clearness in ownership and controlling that a limited company provides in proportion to the remaining alternatives.

There are several different forms of ownership, which could be suitable for Dalarna Science Park, where several of the options are advantageous. Stiftelsen Teknikdalens transformation should be based on its purpose, to enhance regional growth and development, and then consider which ownership that best meets this objective. The important thing is that the valleys Science Park has a base funding for their activities in order to be able to operate in the long term. Financial form of a Science Park is linked to the Organization and owner form, so the ratio of core funds and project funding in Dalarna's Science Park should be, should be clarified before an organization of choice can be implemented.

The choosing of which organization- and ownership form can come to affect collaboration opportunities with Högskolan Dalarna, to mention one. To be able to be the link between the academia and the business world, Dalarna Science Park should weigh which organization- and ownership form is the most suitably by a Triple Helix view, in other words the collaboration between business world, body politic/authority and college/university.

Perceptions of Sustainability and Functional Aspects on Liquid Carton Board Packaging Materials versus Competing Materials for Juice Applications in Sweden2015In: Beverage packaging, ISSN 2306-5710, Vol. 1, p. 194-203Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This research explores the downstream perceptions of liquid carton board versus competing materials in packaging applications for juice. The methodology used is focus groups. The context is sustainability and functional performance, and related potential implications for the beverage industry value chain. The purpose is to get a deeper insight and understanding of functionality in relation to juice beverage packaging. The results confirm that there is no optimal packaging for every juice product, but a multitude, depending on the distribution channel, retail outlet, customer preferences, and context of consumption. There are some general packaging preferences, but the main deciding criteria for purchase seem to be the product characteristics in terms of quality, taste, brand, price and shelf life. For marketing reasons, packaging has to be adopted to the product and its positioning, liquid carton board packaging seem to have some functional advantages in distribution and is considered as sustainable and functional among many consumers. Major drawbacks seem to be shape limitations, lack of transparency, and lack of a “premium look”. To improve packaging performance and avoid sub-optimization, actors in the beverage industry value chain need to be integrated in development processes.

Sustainability strategies in the forestry–wood chain driven by market demands on books and other products2015In: Publishing research quarterly, ISSN 1053-8801, E-ISSN 1936-4792, Vol. 31, p. 21-35Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper focuses on sustainability strategies for the Forestry–Wood chain (FWC) driven by market demands on books and other products. The main objective is to draft and suggest a process for market driven pro-active sustainability strategies for the FWC, based on a SWOT-analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats). Further to highlight the possible strategic implications and critical areas for actors upstream in the FWC, in the context of uncertain external future scenarios. Higher demands on product differentiation were found throughout the FWC, where also collaboration and stakeholder interaction was found important to improve sustainability. The work broadens the “traditional” perspectives on FWC sustainability to encompass also interacting value chains such as book production and publishing, to get a more holistic view.

Undersökning av artikelkostnadsmodell förimplementering, underhåll och utfas av artiklar: Hur påverkas de administrativa kostnaderna vidimplementering, underhåll och utfas av artiklar av artikelnskomplexitet?2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

A company that sells and in many cases also manufactures goods often has a largenumber of part numbers to handel. These part numbers create what we chose tocall part number costs. These costs are administrative and arise whenimplementing, maintaining and phasing out an article. Implementation costs arethe administrative costs that arise when a new part is introduced in a company.Maintenance costs are the costs that arise during the life of a part and phasing outcosts are the costs that arise when a part is to be discontinued within a company.Kenger (2018) has developed a parts cost model that calculates the costs incurredin implementing, maintaining and phasing out parts. The model i based on thatparts are divided in three different degrees of complexity which are low, mediumand high complex parts. Depending on the degree of complexity a part is dividedinto the parts runs various large costs. These costs are identified by mapping outthe company’s activities for implementing, maintaining and phasing out parts aswell as its timeframe. The purpose of the parts cost model is to give companiesgreater knowledge of the cost of a part. This can further lead to a more profitablebusiness for the companies. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate whether the parts cost model can beused in a Swedish small-scale manufacturing company. In order to do this, interviews have been conducted with the development department, salesdepartment, purchasing department and marketing department within the companyin the study. During the interviews data about what the company considers to bepart complexity was collected and mapping of the activities for implementing, maintaining and phasing out parts of each department was done.A clear link between a part’s complexity and how much administrative costs it ranin terms of implementation, and maintenance appeared during the thesis. On theother hand, insufficient data was collected to determine the phasing out costs forthe company. The overall results, however, show that the part cost model can besuccessfully implemented in i Swedish small-scale manufacturing company. However, it may be time consuming to identify all the company’s activities as wellas determine what part complexity is for the company.

Kostnader och risker med internationell verksamhet i Mexiko2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis objective is to identify which factors that affects costs and risks with international business in Mexico, out of the perspective that operating business is normally well-functioning and that the business environment is supportive. A literature-study was conducted on International Business, which helped to form the interview-materials used to interview businessmen in Mexico with experience of both international business and USA/Europe, and experience from only operating business within the country.

Results show that there are six areas that may affect costs and risks; Political forces that cause drastic changes in a country’s business environment that adversely affect the profit and other goals of a particular business enterprise; Economic factors that cause higher costs for operating business due to deficiencies in infrastructure and supporting mechanisms to a business; The economic development within the country; There is widespread corruption of the Mexican government at both the local and state level; Management processes and working methods should be adapted according to culturally determined work-related values of employees; and International businesses should hire local individuals to assist in operating business because of the culture.

Kandidatexamen Industriell Ekonomi: Distributionsstrukturer vid export av lågprisprodukter2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Moveit: improved motivation and engagement for hazard control2005In: IOHA 6th International Conference, Pilansberg, South Africa, 2005Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The knowledge of possibilities to reduce or eliminate hazards in workplaces has been gradually developed during decades. The same is true for the technical development focusing on prevention of exposure to i.e. noise and air contaminants or accident prevention. However, the existence of ventilation technique, which can minimise the emission, and distribution of air contaminants, thus reducing the workers exposure to it effectively, does not mean that this technique is used. The situation is too often the same with most other technical solutions aimed at hazard control in the workplace. According to our experience the reason for not implementing good control technology or failure to use effective personal protection equipment is very often not a question of money. It is very much a question of knowledge, motivation and engagement. This implies that the effectiveness of investments in control technology all too often is poor. It is easy for the experienced occupational hygienist to identify examples where investments in effective control technology could be drastically improved if it were to be utilized in the way the designer had intended. It is for example easy to find welders who have access to good smoke extractors but nevertheless are exposed to fumes because of incorrect handling of the extractor. This is often explained by a limited motivation to use the equipment, sometime combined with inadequate knowledge of its qualities. There is therefore a need for methods that can support improved motivation and engagement for the reduction of hazardous exposure. It is our belief that many such methods already exist but they are normally not developed for that purpose. The key element in those methods is that they have a potential to activate the worker. When for example a standard occupational exposure measurement method is conducted the results are normally reported in a written report, which is sent to the manager of the company some weeks later. The feedback to the exposed worker is very limited and possibilities to reduce exposure by changes in work practises may be overlooked. If instead visualisation methods such as PIMEX are used the worker will be a lot better motivated and engaged to take part in the seeking of solutions. A project aimed at identification, evaluation and development of such “Moveit-methods” has been conducted at the Swedish Institute for Working Life. Examples of methods that have been found useful for this purpose are besides PIMEX, the TUTTAVA method which primarily aims at measuring good housekeeping at work, various check lists, editing of photos from a workplace to stimulate discussions around possible improvements etc. A number of such methods have been identified and found to be very useful for the purpose of acting like a starting motor in a change process, which then must be followed by a main engine that shall make use of the improved motivation and engagement among the exposed. The main engine is the driving force for a traditional problem-solving circle. The Moveit-method has then helped to give a much better base for a more effective use of existing possibilities to reduce hazardous exposure.

En studie över de externa förutsättningarna för små och medelstora företag att arbeta med just in time i Dalarna2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this work was to describe the external conditions, in terms of logistics and suppliers, which small and medium-sized enterprises have in order to work with just in time (JIT) in a region characterized by long distances and a low concentration of enterprises.

The conclusion shows that JIT, which is part of the lean business strategy, could also be utilized by small and medium-sized enterprises in Dalarna. As with most business strategies, however, there are some problems which need resolving. The external conditions of reliable transportation routes and short delivery times over long distances are available in Dalarna. However, the cost of transportation is a problem because it is usually based on weight and volume, which means that small and light consignments can have a high shipping price. To solve the problem with high transport costs requires coordination with other companies in order to obtain optimal freight volumes. This might seem problematic due to the low concentration of enterprises in the region; however one of the interviewed enterprises could coordinate some of their freight with other enterprises in an efficient manner.

As the opportunity to obtain discount when purchasing decreases while administrative expenses increase for many small deliveries rather than a few large ones, a total cost analysis should be done in order to see if JIT is profitable for the enterprise.

The technical conditions to connect buyers, sellers and hauliers through enterprise resource planning and transport administration systems are available, which is essential as JIT requires enhanced cooperation with suppliers. In previous case studies, conducted by other authors, among small and medium-sized enterprises that have implemented JIT in Korea and Taiwan the companies identified problems with suppliers who did not deliver on time and suppliers who were unwilling to work with JIT. Furthermore, they felt that they lacked bargaining power as a small or medium-sized enterprise. The enterprises interviewed in this thesis (which are located in Dalarna but do not work with JIT today) all have good relationships with their suppliers and felt that they could influence them despite their size.

Terapeutisk ridning som metod för arbetslivsinriktad rehabilitering2006Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Both the public and private sectors have since the 1980s relentlessly cut the size of their workforces. The downsizing has regularly been reported to lead to closure of a whole or a part of a corporation or organization. Some studies which have analyzed the closures have reported that remarkable, counterintuitive improvements in labor productivity occurred during the time-period between the closure announcement and the final working day. Testing an elaborated cybernetic model on a Swedish case study, and on an exploratory basis, this paper proposes a holistic approach to generate a better understanding of this phenomenon. The main holistic pattern is a new order where management control is replaced by more “Self-management” on the plant level, and very strong psychological reactions based on feelings of unfairness.

    Abstract [en]

The Swedish industries are on a market with big competition from low-wage countries. This has results in efficiencies and closures of industries. Some closures has the prerequisite to keep the functionality a time after closure to insure production if the market change.

In this work we have been study two cases, SSAB and Kvarnsvedens pappersbruk. They are two process industries which have closed down part of their production in order to keep them operational a while after closure. The productions lines accessibility are important since process industries are a complex and capital-intensive network of equipment, which is why continual operations are often used, and the maintenance function become an important part of the organisation.

The purpose was to found out maintenance strategies that were useful for the process industries in this work. The advantages and disadvantages for the different maintenance strategies was presented and given to the companies’ preconditions, such as possibility for a future start-up, closure time and already implemented maintenance strategies. The purpose is also to present some guidelines that could be useful for companies in similar situations.

In this case-study we found that both cases retained their daily maintenance to ensure the production and quality until the closure. Some indications could be aggregated in the end of this work, on which maintenance strategies was more beneficial for these cases.

    Abstract [en]

The demand for houses and residents is increasing in line with an increasing population in Sweden, based on the investments planned to be made in the construction sector during the next two decades, there will be a lack of approximately 100,000 construction workers in Sweden. The gap of labor in the construction and project sector will result in a need for external help from other countries in the EU (Christensson, 2016). This is something that easily can cause new challenges with communication problems and problems with other cultural differences at the construction sites in Sweden. In this work, a case study is carried out on a multicultural billion project in Sweden, in which a variety of languages and cultures are represented.  The focus in this case study is on security climate, safety culture and cultural differences within the organization in the project. The purpose with this work is to find out how the multicultural environment and communication affect the safety culture and security climate by doing this case study. And in case an impact is detected, to find out what problems may arise as a result of this and how to work to prevent these problems. We hope that the study will increase the awareness and knowledge of how a multicultural project can affect the safety culture.  The biggest part of the empirical collection in this work is based on participatory observations and an ethnographic study of the project. The observations have then been supplemented with semi-structured interviews with three respondents selected based on work tasks and position in the project. The interviews were conducted to obtain higher reliability in the study.  The results of the study show that the cultural differences and the multicultural communication in the project both affect the safety culture and make it difficult to maintain a good security climate in the project. Several factors were identified that varied between the different cultures and that directly affected the security work in the project.  Even if parts of the studied organization work actively with preventative safety work according to the studied theories, there are opportunities for improvements, both regarding implementation and choice of methods. Other aspects that affected the security culture were also identified, including a difference in behavior and attitude towards security depending    on which level of the organizational hierarchy was observed. A bigger focus on cultural differences is recommended to increase the understanding and create consensus within the project.

Den svenska nedskärningsmodellen2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The objective with this study is to form a model for Swedish conditions, which canbe used to minimize the negative consequences of downsizing but also highlightthe positive aspects of downsizing. We created our own model for how adownsizing process should be executed to obtain the most successful resultpossible, by using the model Realistic Downsizing Preview (RDP) as a foundation. The aim with our model is to highlight the positive aspects of downsizing and tominimize the negative effects of downsizing, and show organizations how they canwork to accomplish the task. This is a qualitative based literature study where we have put a big amount ofeffort into collecting articles and papers that focuses on the subject SurvivorSyndrome and how organizations should work with downsizing. The collecteddata was then critically analyzed, so that it could be used as a factor in the creationof our model “The Swedish Downsizing Model” (SNM). We performed twointerviews, one at SSAB and the other at NCC Construction. We performed theinterviews after the model was created, the purpose was to test the model in reallife and to get some key notes. Our model focuses on three key factors, which isthe executioners, the survivors and the victims. The study addresses to corporate management at larger Swedish organizationswhich are about to perform a downsizing.

Strategi och modell för underhållsverksamhet under avveckling: En studie av underhållsverksamheten på tunnelbanevagn modell C62014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

under perioden.
