From Buenos Aires to Finland and Japan: The tango's unusual migration2014Inngår i: List of Abstracts for Conference Transcultural Identity Constructions in a Changing World, Dalarna University, Sweden, April 2-4, 2014, 2014, s. 19-20Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In Finland, thousands of miles away from Buenos Aires, people crowd the dance floors of restaurants and dance halls nightly to dance to tango music, while the tango has also caught the heart of the people on the other side of the world in Japan. The popularity of the tango in both Finland and Japan, however, is not very well known to the outside world.

Though some scholars have stated that the tango reflects the personality, mentality and identity of the Finnish and Japanese people, this may only be partially true. Moreover, it is difficult to generalize what the Finnish or Japanese personality is. I argue that the tango's success in these two countries also has significant connections to historical and social factors. As being a dancer myself, I also believe that the 'liminality' (originally a term borrowed from Arnold van Gennep's formulation of rites de passage) of tango dancing plays an important role in these two nations that went through difficult struggles to recover from the damage caused by the war. “The liminal phase is considered sacred, anomalous, abnormal and dangerous, while the  pre- and post-liminal phases are normal and a profane state of being (Selänniemi 1996) and “the regular occurrence of sacred-profane alternations mark important periods of social life or even provide the measure of the passage of time itself”(Leach 1961).

In this paper, I will discuss motives and paths of how a culture travels, settles and shapes into a new form, using the tango as an example.

Intercultural communicative competence: the challenges and implications of teaching Japanese politeness strategies to Swedish learners of Japanese2015Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Teaching communicative competence is extremely important in language instruction. One can avoid embarrassing situations and conflicts caused by misunderstandings if she/he understands the differences in intercultural pragmatics. Politeness discourse varies in complexity according to social distance, relative power between the speakers, and situations. The data I have collected during the past 6 years indicates that Swedish learners of Japanese often do not see the necessity of learning the polite/honorific discourse and often view these negatively as Swedish society is one of the most egalitarian in the world. As a consequence, Swedish students often fail to utilize appropriate politeness strategies when speaking in Japanese. However, it is important to point out to foreign language learners that cultural and social norms are not interchangeable and that one must adapt to the language one is using and the culture one is in. Thus Swedish Learners of Japanese should consider politeness discourse as a part of the rules of the language rather than something that can be modified based on one’s opinion.

The current study investigates the differences in politeness strategies between Swedish and Japanese discourse. Student surveys and analysis of students’ errors have revealed clear differences in the use of politeness strategies in Swedish and in Japanese context. While the politeness, respect, and formality are closely intertwined in Japanese; the Swedes perceive respect and politeness as separate matters. It is also found that while the Japanese are inclined to using verbal politeness strategies, the Swedes express their respect more through non-verbal actions or behaviors. Various Japanese and Swedish utterances have also been examined to determine the Discourse Politeness Default suggested by Usami (2006) in order to systematize the politeness strategies in ways similar to grammatical rules.

Öppna test jämfört med blindtest: Hur påverkas lyssnarens bedömning?2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Vernacular meaning making: Examples of narrative impact in fiction film questioning the 'banal' notion in mediatization of religion theory2015Inngår i: Nordicom Review, ISSN 1403-1108, E-ISSN 2001-5119, Vol. 36, nr 2, s. 143-156Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The outcome of an audience study supports theories stating that stories are a primary means by which we make sense of our experiences over time. Empirical examples of narrative impact are presented in which specific fiction film scenes condense spectators' lives, identities and beliefs. One conclusion is that spectators test the emotional realism of the narative for greater significance, connecting diegetic fiction experiences with their extra-diegetic world in their quest for meaning, self and identity. The 'banal' notion of the mediatization of religion theory is questioned as unsatisfactory in the theoretical context of individualized meaning-making processes. As a semantically negatively charged concept, it is problematic when analyzing empirical examples of spectators' use of fictional narratives, especially when trying to characterize the idiosyncratic and complex interplay between spectators' fiction emotions and their testing of mediated narratives in an exercise to find moral significance in extra-filmic life. Instead vernacular meaning-making is proposed.

Factors Affecting the Nation Building process in Post-Apartheid South Africa: An assessment of the performance of ANC Governments2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis examines the Nation Building process in South Africa after the demise of Apartheid era. It has primarily analysed, assessed and evaluated the performances of ANC Governments under Mandela, Mbeki and Zuma from the perspective of Nation Building process in the country. The study throws light on the different factors that have been affecting the Nation Building process in South Africa. This study explores a brief historical analysis by uncovering the conditions faced by the South African society during Apartheid era, ethnicity and race relations, how did apartheid programme the collective psyche of the people of the land, its implications in the Post-Apartheid phase of the country and the outcomes affecting the integration process of the segregated society. This work has highlighted the dream of the founding fathers in the Nation Building of South Africa, making of the constitution and its provisions supporting a consociational democratic culture favourable for the Nation Building process. At the same time the study also presents how ethnic struggle for domination in party politics affected the idea of Nation Building, Xhosa Zulu tussle, corruption, nepotism, injustice, inequalities, political repression, human rights abuses, police brutality, extra constitutional measures taken by law enforcing agencies and political institutes, disgruntled and dissatisfied masses all contributed in the creation of a chaotic environment not conducive for the Nation Building process.

Fiction and Disease: Representation and Meaning of HIV/AIDS by Three South African Novels2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

South Africa is one of the most affected country by the HIV/AIDS epidemic worldwide. Literary responses gave voice to the impact and perception of HIV/AIDS epidemic. The present thesis is focused on the creative response to HIV/AIDS by a sample of three selected South African novels

Welcome to Our Hillbrow, Beauty’s Gift, and The Reactive. By using an interdisciplinary approach, the representation and the experience of HIV/AIDS, and the meanings associated to the disease as described in the novels are analysed. Welcome to Our Hillbrow presents the prejudice and myths around HIV/AIDS, Beauty’s Gift is focused on female empowerment against risky masculinity, and The Reactive is a coming-of-age novel offering an introspective insight into HIV-positive status. Written in different times between 2001 and 2014, and by black authors of different generations, the novels are inscribed in the socio-cultural context of South Africa. With this sample of selected fiction, it is possible to observe a complex scenario on HIV/AIDS and a shift in the focus on HIV/AIDS perception: from stigma and mortality, to activism and prevention, to the individual co-existence with a manageable chronic condition. The novels showed the nuances of the meanings associated to HIV/AIDS, and their specific relation to the socio-cultural determinants of the disease (stigma, misinformation, rural-urban relation, gender power structure, accessibility to treatment). The present work intends to contribute to the understanding of HIV/AIDS by the perspective of creative voices which have the ability to disclose meaning and signification to the experience of suffering due to the disease.

Covering the South African Intention to Leave the International Criminal Court (ICC): A web content analysis of the debate between media arguments and possible bias2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This study is an initial attempt to analyze the media debate about the intention to withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC) announced last October 2016 by the South African government.

The purpose is to examine media arguments raised and possible bias on three South African major news sites. Articles selected are analyzed through a web content analysis that allows to understand how the debate about the government’s intention was presented, examining the issue of unconstitutionality and the question of human rights emerged. In order to verify possible media bias, instead, several previous studies on the matter were considered, with particular attention to the one of Eberl, Boomgaarden and Wagner, used to apply a systematic analytical approach. Theories on media accountability and media ethics in South Africa constitute the theoretical framework of the research. The study is conducted by following an extensive review of secondary sources and a typical descriptive case study approach. What the Thesis means to show is that, in most cases, South African web sites have presented and discussed the government’s intention with a negative tone demonstrating media bias especially in the tonality used, often against, more or less openly, the country’s withdrawal.

Authenticity as a compromise: a critical discourse analysis of Sámi tourism websites2019Inngår i: Journal of Heritage Tourism, ISSN 1743-873X, E-ISSN 1747-6631, Vol. 14, nr 3, s. 249-262Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Authenticity is considered a very important means to attract tourists. Different enterprises and destinations compete for visitors and authenticity is an important factor for visitors’ travel decisions. Within the context of indigenous and cultural tourism, several studies have criticized the way in which indigenous and local populations are portrayed in order to attract tourists, since they often involve colonial images and descriptions that are no longer corresponding to the contemporary situation. This study presents an alternative perspective on the discussion on tourism marketing in relation to authenticity. Through critical discourse analysis and retroduction, this study has analysed the websites of Sámi tourism companies from Sweden. The discussion put forward in this study is not a generalizing picture of how the Sámi peoples choose to market themselves, but it problematizes how these particular enterprises relate to issues of authenticity in the representation of cultural heritage. This paper also presents a new approach to authenticity seen as a compromise. The results of this study present one side of a multifaceted discussion on the struggle between different discourses on representations and authenticity that are often the main channel to reach and attract potential visitors.

Introduction: Transcultural Identity Constructions in a Changing World2016Inngår i: Transcultural Identity Constructions in a Changing World / [ed] Irene Gilsenan Nordin, Chatarina Edfeldt, Lung-Lung Hu, Herbert Jonsson, André Leblanc, Frankfurt am Main: Peter Lang Publishing Group, 2016, s. 11-20Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Although the phenomenon of transculturality has existed as long as human culture, the increased speed of movement and communication worldwide has made it impossible to ignore in any aspect of cultural studies. In a society where changes were slow and foreign influences were few, an illusion of culture as homogeneous and static may have been easy to uphold, but in today’s ever-increasing flux of cultural change, the perspective of transculturality is more satisfactory in understanding human identity constructions. Compared with concepts such as interculturality, multiculturality, or hybridity, which all may have some relevance for describing cultural encounters, but which often presuppose the notion of cultural essentialism, the concept of transculturality has the advantage of recognising change and diversity, rather than focusing on boundaries or differences.

Transcultural Identity Constructions in a Changing World2016Collection/Antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This volume takes a broad outlook on the concept of transculturality. Contributions from 19 authors and specialists, of almost as many diverse origins, grapple with this concept, each in their own way. How can transculturality be described? How can it help us understand our world? Many of the chapters deal with literary texts, others with the stories told in movies, drama, and visual art. There are texts about the complexity of the European Burqa-Ban debate, the negative aspects of Portuguese multiculturalism, or the border-crossing experiences of Filipino immigrants in Ireland. Several chapters examine stereotypes, the idea of movement, the dissolution of cultural borders, or the nature of bilingual writing. It is a unique contribution to the field, on a virtually global scale.

The Butcher’s Wife – Limits of the Law2019Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In the 80’s, Li Ang, a Taiwanese female writer, adapted a murder case in Shanghai in 1945 into a novel “The Butcher’s Wife,” that depicts a woman who, due to her traumatized childhood and psychological condition caused by her husband and neighbours, kills her husband, a butcher, and dismembers the body the way he does pigs. The real murder case in 1945 was less sensational; however, the rumours, the newspapers, or even the legal opinions all implied that the female offender, Zhan Zhou, brutally murdered her husband and disposed of body in an inhumane way.

It was shocking when people learnt from media that Zhan Zhou murdered her husband, and people started to speculate about the motivation. Due to most traditional Chinese women were confined at home with no contact with others, crimes that women committed being mostly related to family, and people, under the influence of Chinese traditional literature about women as well, speculated that Zhan Zhou must have killed her husband for a lover. However, it turned out that Zhan Zhou was not engaged in any adultery, and that she, different from people’s imaginations of an adulteress, was ordinary and not attractive and seductive. It had become a mystery why a woman did not kill her husband for another man, and that why a physically weaker and mentally gentler woman committed such a serious crime.

Li Ang’s novel tries to answer both questions, criticize the prejudices about female offenders, and offers a legal explanation, as I see it, to exonerate the butcher’s wife through a plea of insanity. However, it also strengthens a stereotypical image of female offenders that a woman who commits a serious crime, if she is not under the influence of a man or having an affair, must be mentally ill. Therefore, in this paper, I will examine the image of Zhan Zhou shaped by legal opinions and news reports, then compare it with the image depicted in “The Butcher’s Wife” to illustrate the reinterpretation of the image of a female offender who kills her husband. Furthermore, along with other real cases in which female offenders who murdered their husbands also used insanity as a defense strategy, I will explain why this novel also shows the limit of law in legal writing in literature.

The Insanity Plea in The Butcher’s Wife2019Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In 1983, Li Ang, a Taiwanese female writer, adapted a husband-killing case, which was committed by Zhan Zhou Shi in Shanghai in 1945, into the novel The Butcher’s Wife. The case is also recorded in The Hearsay in Shanghai written by Chen Ding-Shan. The Butcher’s Wife depicts a woman who, due to her traumatized childhood and psychological condition caused by her husband and neighbours, kills her husband, a butcher, and dismembers the body the way he does pigs.

Li Ang’s novel tries to offer a legal explanation to exonerate the butcher’s wife, Lin Shi, through a plea of insanity. In this article, I will compare the case of Zhan Zhou Shi both in the media and in The Hearsay in Shanghai with The Butcher’s Wife to illustrate Li Ang's reinterpretation of the case and explain how Li Ang goes beyond the insanity pleas that strengthens a stereotypical insane image of female offenders.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In 2000 when Sweden signed the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities the Roma minority became one of the acknowledged national minorities in the country. It meant that the rights of the Roma mi-nority would be safeguarded and the knowledge of its history and culture would be spread. In that context, the Swedish school, with its founded as-signment of democracy, was given an important role. The education was to communicate the multicultural values of the society and to make visible the history and culture of the Roma minority.

The school books used in teaching today do not meet these demands. The view of the Roma minority given in school books is often inadequate and simplified. The present study will therefore examine a different type of edu-cational material used in schools and teaching, The Swedish Educational Broadcasting Company‟s programs of history and social studies regarding the Roma minority. Starting in postcolonial theory as well as critical dis-course analysis the study examines how the picture of the Roma cultural and ethnic identity in the Swedish Educational Broadcasting Company‟s material has been displayed and possibly changed during the period of 1975 to 2013.

The results show a picture of Roma which, both in form and content, con-sists of some clearly demarcated discursive categories. The obvious continui-ty of the categories gives a picture of static and invariable Roma identity. At the same time this unambiguous picture is broken both by giving the existing discourses new meaning and also adding new discourses. The complexity and nuances become more prominent and the Roma identity is integrated in common Swedish history telling. The changes in the view of Roma, given by the Swedish Educational Broadcasting Company, can mainly be explained by the change of the Swedish immigration and minority policy and, as a conse-quence of this, the change of the school‟s mission regarding knowledge communication of Sweden as a multicultural country.

Fan activities applied to online university education2016Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The presentation discusses a possible way of adapting internet fan activities to the academic level online education. At the Dalarna University (Sweden), which is specialized in online education, there was a three-year project called “Informal Learning Environment”, which explored the educational aspects of fan activities, and the possible ways to apply them in language (French, German, Japanese, Portuguese) and literature courses.

The educational effects of fan activities are mentioned by various authors (e.g. James Paul Gee), and we focused on two activities, Fan Fiction and Scanlation.

In the Fan Fiction exercise, the students in French and German Literature had an introduction on Fan Fiction, then were asked to choose one of the literary works studied during the semester, and write a short fictional story based on it. Each student uploaded his/her text to the learning platform and then received peer-feedback from others.

In the Scanlation exercise, a group work was designed for the Translation course (Japanese-English translation). Students formed groups of threes and fours and each group translated two different chapters from Shisso Nikki, a manga by Hideo Aduma. They had two weeks to work together, and then the translations were uploaded to the learning platform. Each student then gave comment and feedback to the chapters translated by other groups.

In all courses, students were asked to evaluate the activities afterwards. The evaluation focused on if they enjoyed the activity, what they learned, and what the peer-feedback meant to them. Since we teach only online courses, the web-based interaction becomes very central. This is also the case in fan communities. Therefore, our hypothesis is that connecting fan activities with web-based teaching may be a way to develop and improve the formal academic learning environment.

Cross-Cultural Communication in Next Generation Language Learning: A Case Study of Chinese as a Foreign Language2011Inngår i: Proceedings of the Young Scholar Award Competition for the International Conference on Chinese Language Learning and Teaching in the Digital Age, Hong Kong: The Hong Kong Institute of Education , 2011, , s. 19s. 1-16Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Along with the growth of globalization, the importance of developing student’s competence of cross-cultural communication have been emphasized constantly in foreign language education. When a teacher, who is a native Chinese speaker, teaches Chinese as a foreign language to foreign students, the whole process is thus not just “teaching a foreign language”, but also a “cross-culture communication”. In China, the concept of cross-culture communication did not draw much attention in teaching Chinese as foreign language until the 1980s, when a controversial and still ongoing debate started. Despite there are already some generally accepted conclusions that cross-cultural communication approach should be emphasized and implemented in teaching Chinese as foreign language, Chinese is still mostly taught to foreigners in the traditional way owing to the lack of empirical work, resources and supports. Therefore, there is an urgent need for research of implementing the cross-cultural communication approach in both teaching and learning Chinese as a foreign language.

Chinese as a foreign language is now available in both traditional and distance modes. In the last few years, global demand for learning Chinese as a foreign language has been dramatically increasing. And since the traditional mode of education cannot satisfy specific needs of some students, a new generation of distance education, supported by the fast maturing videoconferencing software and the web-based learning in general, generates new alternatives and possibilities for both teaching and learning Chinese as a foreign language. However, this development also constitutes specific challenges for both teachers and students.

With respond to the challenges, a trial of an action research was designed to investigate scope of possibilities (and their limitations) in implementing cross-cultural communication approach into web-based courses of Chinese as a foreign language. The research brought together two areas of current research on teaching foreign languages: (1) the cross-cultural communication perspective and (2) the distance/internet-based education.

The Last of Us2013Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

A catástrofe pós-colonial: ler António Lobo Antunes «à rebours»2014Inngår i: / [ed] Maria Graciete Besse et Mònica Güel, Paris, 2014, nr 15Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [fr]

    Abstract [fr]

    Abstract [pt]

    Abstract [pt]

Uncovering History and FolkloreNear Vasalopps-Arenan: Exploring Functions of Mobile Applications for an E-Guide2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The location of focus is Vasalopps-Arenan, a trail of historical relevance in Sweden both forthe world famous ski race, Vasaloppet, which has been held yearly since 1922, and the journeyof Gustav Vasa, upon which it is named. The potential to expand the all-season use of thetrail with the advent of free Wi-Fi along its 90 km length further supports this means. Vasalopps-Arenan is also the organization responsible for the trail system of the same name.Instead of the ski-race that the arena is best known for, this research focuses on the historicalevidence, stories, myths, and folklore previously underrepresented, and connecting them tophysical and natural phenomena that surround the research area, through the formulation ofnarratives. The introduction of literature related to narrative authenticity and interpretationwill give context to the importance of gathering primary and secondary data, for the creationof narratives that convey the stories accurately and effectively. This data is collected and analysedusing qualitative methods, through which the implemented process of deducing theirinclusion into narratives, will be beneficial for both this study and the organization, VA. Bydoing this, a connection is made between physical attractions and the area’s history and folklore,to satisfy the formulation of narratives that are intended for presentation within a digitalguide or application. A smartphone application that enables the capture of video, audio, photoimages, GPS information, can provide opportunities for much deeper and meaningful e-guideexperiences. Introducing a technological background and current applications in the marketwill provide context for both a scale formed to provide a foundation upon which Vasalopps-Arenan can build user specific information relative to its trail, and to determine what functionswould be most beneficial for the user categories of Vasalopps-Arenan. This study willuncover underrepresented/unrepresented historical data related to folklore, myths, physicalattractions and ancient beliefs within the region of this study’s focus, for the purpose of beingincluded into an e-guide/smartphone application. The study will conclude that the findings fornarrative inclusion are suitable for use within a mobile e-guide platform, and that the functionsof an application intended for different user categories also support the future creation ofthe proposed Vasalopps-Arenan application.

Ways of knowing in ways of moving: A study of the meaning of capability to move2014Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The overall aim of this thesis has been to investigate the meaning of the capability to move in order to identify and describe this capability from the perspective of the one who moves in relation to specific movements. It has been my ambition to develop ways to explicate, and thereby open up for discussion, what might form an educational goal in the context of movements and movement activities in the school subject of physical education and health (PEH).

In this study I have used a practical epistemological perspective on capability to move, a perspective that challenges the traditional distinction between mental and physical skills as well as between theoretical and practical knowledge. Movement actions, or ways of moving, are seen as expressions of knowing.

In order to explore an understanding of the knowing involved in specific ways of moving, observations of  actors’ ways of moving and their own experiences of moving were brought together. Informants from three different arenas took part: from PEH in upper secondary school, from athletics and from free-skiing.

The results of the analyses suggest it is possible to describe practitioners’ developed knowing as a number of specific ways of knowing that are in turn related to specific ways of moving. Examples of such specific ways of moving may be discerning and modifying one’s own rotational velocity and navigating one’s (bodily) awareness. Additionally, exploring learners’ pre-knowing of a movement ‘as something’ may be fruitful when planning the teaching and learning of capability to move. I have suggested that these specific ways of knowing might be regarded as educational goals in PEH.

In conducting this study, I have also had the ambition to contribute to the ongoing discussion of what ‘ability’ in the PEH context might mean. In considering specific ways of knowing in moving, the implicit and taken-for-granted meaning of ‘standards of excellence’ and ‘sports ability’can be discussed, and challenged.

    Abstract [en]

In this work, the use of sketching in sound design was studied. Based on Schon and Wiggins' model of how designers use sketching to see, move, and see again, we suggest that sound design evolves through a similar process requiring listening, moving, and listening again. This is facilitated by considering sounds as sketches. A case was followed in which six designers were asked to design a sound logotype. Processes and interactions were studied. The results suggest that sound design can be considered as a listen move listen process. Sound design is a conversation with sounding material, crucially dependent on listening. To assist in this, a computer interface was developed. Analysis of its use suggests that it supported co-designing. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Transcultural memories of German-Namibian history (1978-1990):: Micro-perspectives from the global autobiographies of Lucia Engombe and Stefanie Lahya Aukongo2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The present thesis deals with the Namibian liberation struggle against the South African regime, by focusing on the relationship of solidarity between SWAPO and East Germany. It provides an original perspective of the German-Namibian history between 1978-1990, by using the life stories of Lucia Engombe and Stefanie Lahya Aukongo. They are Namibian women who, according to the pact of solidarity, lived on the brink between Namibia and East Germany, becoming in this way witnesses of the historical upheavals that have changed the global order. Then, this thesis makes use of

Child No. 95. My German-African Odyssey – the autobiography of Lucia Engombe – and Kalungas Kind: meine unglaubliche Reise uns Leben – the autobiography of Stefanie Layha Aukongo – as sources to investigate the complexities of that period. The global lives of Lucia Engombe and Stefanie Lahya Aukongo allow the combination of macro and micro history and bring out new facets, which otherwise would remain in the shadow. Through the deconstruction of their life narratives, in fact, the big narrative of the global history become fraught with new meanings, bringing out the power of microhistories. This thesis shows how individual autobiographies can be meaningful to history, and how global history can be reconciled with micro-history through the story of global lives, which provide new and unprecedented points of view.
