    Sambandet mellan bestrykningsreceptur och sänkningen av ytans vithet vid UV-lackning2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis

    AssiDomän tillverkar kartong till förpackningsindustrin. Inom detta område är vitheten på kartongytanen viktig parameter. För att höja intrycket av förpackningen samt skapa en skyddande yta lackas ofta förpackningen med UV-lack efter tryck. Efter lackning kan då otryckta lackade ytor uppfattas som mindre vita. För att ta reda på om bestrykningssammansättningen har betydelse har ett fem olika bestrykningar blandats. Pigmenten som använts i bestrykningarna är karbonat, kaolin och titandioxid i olika kombinationer. Kartong har sedan bestrukits med dessa och därefter lackerats med UV-lack. Lackningen har gjorts i tre olika lackmängder. Mätningar har sedan gjorts gällande framförallt vithet. Den samverkan som sker mellan ljus, materialet och dess struktur är av stor vikt för att skapa en yta med goda optiska egenskaper. Resultaten i detta försök visar att lacken påverkar de optiska egenskaperna och framförallt vitheten. De lackerade ytorna fick en gulton efter lackering vilket kan ha att göra med lackens egenskaper. Vitheten hade en något mindre minskning för den bestrykning som bestod av karbonat och titandioxid. Skillnaden var dock mycket liten då alla bestrykningar fick en sänkning av vitheten med cirka 11-13 procentenheter oberoende av utgångsvärdet i vithet för respektive bestrykning innan lackning. Positivt var att det kunde konstateras att den bestrykning som hade det högsta vithetsvärdet före lackning också hade det efter lackning med ett normalt lackpålägg vilket betyder att en hög vithet är av betydelse även om den bestrukna ytan ska lackas. Den sänkning av vitheten som sker kan ha flera tänkbara orsaker. En tänkbar orsak kan vara att lacken förstör den porösa struktur som ger den viktiga ljusspridningen i bestrykningsskiktet. Resultaten visar också att lackens egenskaper tycks vara av stor betydelse. Den gulton som framträdde efter lackning tyder på en ökad absorption av vissa ljusvåglängder. Något som också pekar på detta är att alla fem bestrykningarna fick en liknande sänkning av vitheten. För att säga exakt vad som är orsaken eller vilken kombination som påverkar vitheten mest krävs ytterliggare tester. Olika UV-lacker kan testas eftersom endast en UV-lack har använts i dessa försök. En närmare studie av gränsyta mellan UV-lacken och bestrykningsskiktet bör också göras för att se hur lacken påverkar bestrykningsskiktets struktur.

    Vanliga arkoffsetfärger innehåller pigment, trioglycerid, mineraloljor eller vegetabiliska oljor, naturliga hartser, alkyder och tillsatser såsom torkmedel, antioxidanter och vaxer. Tryckfärger för olika ändamål torkar genom skilda processer. Arkoffsetfärger torkar i två steg. Först sker oljeabsorption och sedan sker en kombination av oxidation och polymerisation. I detta steg är det bindemedlet och oljorna som förlorar dubbelbindningar, kortare molekyler reagerar och bildar längre molekylkedjor, vilket resulterar i att färgen torkar. Den kemiska torkningen initieras av luftens syre. Tryckfärgers torkningsförlopp tar alltför lång tid och detta arbete avsåg att genom GRT-utvärdering utvärdera hur temperatur, tillgång av syre och fuktvattenhållningen i tryckpressen påverkar torktiden för tre olika papperskvaliteter. Examensarbetet visade att temperaturen påverkar torktiden mycket. En ökning från 23 ºC till 40 ºC minskade torktiden med upp till en tredjedel. För att syret ska reducera torktiden måste tillgången vara stor. Endast ökning av sprutpulvrets grovlek gav inget utslag, men torkning vid fritt lufttillträde minskade torktiden till en sjättedel jämfört med torkning i stapel. För att torkningen inte ska ta onödigt lång tid ska fuktvattennivån i pressen vara låg.

    The purpose of this work was to determine how important a word’s setting was for the readability of typography in motion. Facts regarding how reading works and the importance of the words formation for the readability were used to form a computer test. This test was performed by 15 test persons and the results were analyzed. The results show that the serif was easier to read than the sanserif. The words of the serif which were easiest to read were the words with positive tracking and the words with capital letters. Also for the sanserif, these words were the easiest to read.

    If you move from Sweden to Portugal to work as an Art Director at an Ad agency, there are certain things you ought to know. Perhaps even before you decide to move. There are a lot of things that are quite different if you compare Portugal to Sweden, not only the language, but also the design, software, working hours and much more. You have for example two month with double salary, you work till six p.m. and when it comes to maternity leave, you have 100% compensation with no taxes the first four months of every pregnancy. The tasks you have to handle as an Art Director in Portugal may, as in Sweden, be various. The difference is more how you solve your task and what the design looks like. As a Swede in Portugal the solution will probably look like a mixture between the Portuguese “expressive” and the Swedish “clean” design. This degree project discusses questions that might turn up when a Swede gets employed as an Art Director in Portugal. What will the salary be? When, in the morning, is it time to show up at the office? How many weeks of vacations are entitled? There are a lot of distinctions, but also a lot of similarities. The report is mainly based upon the author’s own experiences of the Ad agency McCann-Erickson in Lisbon. The history of McCann-Erickson starts in New York, 1930 and grew rapidly into one of the leading corporation with agencies all over the world. It is still today one of the world’s largest Ad company with clients like Coca-Cola and General Motors, and the slogan “truth well told” still lights up all their agencies after almost a century, just like a leading star.

    A new visual identity for the ski store Alpingaraget in Stockholm has been proposed as the result of this thesis. The proposal includes a new logotype, various printed matters, design planning of the store, interior design, signs and other applications. The theory section is within the field of graphic profiling and with some focus on profiling in stores. A clear visual identity is important for a company because what the company communicates internally and externally should be kept as consistent as possible. This is especially important nowadays when more and more similar products and stores are available. This means that the visual identity becomes part of the competition with other products and stores. The base elements in a visual identity are logotype, colors and typograpy. Using these elements according to rules and templates makes a consistent visual profile.

    This thesis investigates how the optical properties of paperboard influences printing with targets in ISO 12647-2. The targets for optical properties in ISO 12647-2 are defined for paperboard without optical brightening agents and fluorescent brightening agents wich makes it difficult to reach the targets when printing paperboard containing these agents. Seven different types of paperboard, some with and some without the agents, have been printed and instrumentally and visually measured to see if there is any deviation from the standard targets and if it shows visually. The result shows that paperboard containing optical brightening agents and fluorescent brightening agents can print with targets in ISO 12647-2 but in many measurments the difference between the types of paperboard were to small to assess. The differences between the types of paperboard in the instrumental measurements did not fully correspond with the way the panel appraised them visually.

    Paper dimensional stability in sheet-fed offset printing: Papperets dimensionsstabilitet i en arkoffsetpress2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

    In offset printing, dampening solution is used to create a good balance in the process. If too much water is transferred to the paper, the sheet can change its size between the printing units, due to water absorption, and cause a problem with the colour register. This phenomenon is usually referred to as fanout. In this degree project, an investigation was made to see if the paper dimensions changed through its way in the sheet-fed printing process. The instrument Luchs Register Measuring Systems (Lynx) was used, and a method for measuring if the paper changed its dimensions with this instrument, was developed. Paper qualities with three different grammages were used, 90, 130 and 250 gsm. This investigation showed that all paper qualities changed their size with widening in the gripper edge in the range of 10 - 70 µm and in the trailing edge the increase was 10 - 130 µm. The elongations of the papers were in the range of 10- 300 µm. The papers with lowest grammage changed more than the heavier. To see if the print had been affected of the widening and elongation, print quality parameters like relative contrast, dot gain and mottle were correlated with the Lynx data from the sheets. The group of papers that gave correlations were in 130 gsm. The sheets had visual doubling and the combined standard deviation from the Lynx marks K3, K5 and K21 correlated with dot gain. When the variations increased so did the dot gain and this indicates that the doubling was due to the widening. There was also a correlation between the standard deviation from K3 and Mottle. The sheets widened with an average of 30 µm in the gripper edge and since there probably were doubling due to widening it also affected the Mottle values. What the widening depends on is hard to tell. Since widening was so small, it could be due to water absorption, papers being ironed out or maybe the sheets have been flattened out. It probably needs a more detailed investigation to find out what causes the widening. Further investigations about how print quality is affected by the register accuracy of a printing machine should include a print form with measuring areas close to the Lynx marks. The measuring areas should contain fine hairlines, negative text printed with at least two colours and some pictures to evaluate together with standard measuring should give a good knowledge about the subject.

    The prospects for businesses in the printing industry have radically changed over the last few years as a result of globalisation and developments in computer technology. Having competed with the production of graphic products, companies now find themselves competing with the whole media field of alternative solutions. The over-capacity in the printing market has led to an increased competitive situation and a greater price consciousness. In today’s competitive printing industry, it is the companies whose products and services concerning price and quality most satisfy their customer’s needs, that are the most successful ones. The ability to understand and realise the needs of the customer is of utmost importance for the success of the company. To be able to draw correct conclusions concerning customers it is essential to have as deep a knowledge of the customer as possible. This report is based on a customer survey of 20 of Bromma tryck’s most prominent customers. At the same time, supplementary interviews among employees at different departments were carried out to get a greater insight into Bromma tryck’s quality work. The conclusions from this report are that company’s Achilles heel is their price level. If Bromma tryck could lower their prices the number of new customers would increase and their present customers would use the company even more. The report also points out that the greatest positive aspect of customer service lies in the field of digital printing, addressing, enveloping and shop material.

    To get an optimal print result with rotogravure on improved newsprint, MF-paper, knowledge about what adjustment that should be done through the whole production is needed. This degree project investigates the reproduction’s effect on the final print result. A test print is done at Quebecor World Nordic Interprint´s regular print unit. The evaluation of the print shows how important the use of a unit adjusted ICC-profile is for the print quality. A comparison between the two separation methods GCR and UCR shows that Interprint´s present ICC-profile, using UCR as separation method, gives less missing dots. When the cylinder that prints the black ink is engraving whit a slower speed than normal the result shows that the colour becomes a little darker, the details becomes clear but the difference is very small.

    This degree project was made in cooperation with AssiDomän Frövi and Charlotte Andersson and the main objective has been to create to ice cream pacbges from 250 gsm Frövi Light board. The paekages are intended to be easily resealable while decreasing in size together with the ice cream. The project also describes the food packaging labels and symbols currently present in the European common market. Both capsules utilize a separate lid for resealing. One of the paekages (Capsuie A) is indended to be cut along with the ice cream and thereby decrease in size. The other one (Capsuie B) uses a series of flaps for contracting and expanding which enab1es adjusting of the size without cutting the package up. The design for Capsuie A is created both as a series of flavours with a super-hero theme intended for children and with a colfee flavour for a maturer audience. For Capsule B, a design was created for a sorbet.

    This project has been made in cooperation with Stora Enso Research Centre Falun (Research). The background of the project is that Research has customers who demand a method to measure the quantity of varnish online in offset printing. The aim with the project is to investigate if any test method correlates with the quantity of varnish and to improve the understanding of the variables in the varnishing unit. The goal with the project is to develop a functional method. Two printing trials have been performed. The aim with the first trial was to investigate how different factors in the printer influenced the quantity of varnish using reduced factoranalysis. The aim of the second trial was to analyse only a reduced numbers of factors in the varnishing unit. The methods that were used to measure the varnishing quantity are weighing, IR-analysis, gloss, whiteness and brightness. Results from the project show that the weighing method does not work in this study due to basis weight variations of the sheets. The results from weighing did not agree with the results from the other methods. On the other hand there is a strong correation between the IR- and the glossmethods.

    Abstract [en]

    Advanced Building Energy Data Visualization is a way to detect performance problems in commercial buildings. By placing sensors in a building that collects data from example, air temperature and electrical power, then makes it possible to calculate the data in Data Visualization software. This software generates visual diagrams so the building manager or building operator can see if for example the power consumption is to high. A first step (before sensors are installed in a building) to see how the energy consumption is in a building can be to use a Benchmarking Tool. There is a number of Benchmarking Tools that is available for free on the Internet. Each tool have a bit different approach, but they all show how much energy consumption there is in a building compared to other similar buildings. In this study a new web design for the benchmarking tool CalARCH has been developed. CalARCH is developed at the Berkeley Lab in Berkeley, California, USA. CalARCH uses data collected only from buildings in California, and is only for comparing buildings in California with other similar buildings in the state. Five different versions of the web site were made. Then a web survey was done to determine which version would be the best for CalARCH. The results showed that Version 5 and Version 3 was the best. Then a new version was made, based on these two versions. This study was made at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory.

    The degree project has been implemented abroad in Brisbane, Australia. A literature study has been performed parallel to the practical work within the subject »Corporate identity through graphical design«. In this study deeper research has been made concerning the establishment and manifestation of a corporate identity and its program. The knowledge given from this study has been put into practice through two larger projects. The first project was carried out at De Pasquale, advertising agency in Brisbane, where a corporate identity program was designed for a new company. The company is a fitness centre, called Knockout Fitness, which specializes in different types of boxing training sessions such as Boxing, Thai Bow and Boxercise but also Aqua aerobics. They needed a full corporate identity program including a logotype, business card, letter paper-paper and address labels. The second project was carried out at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane. A promotion campaign was designed for the Department of Visual Arts, which included two information folders and one advertisement. The purpose of the campaign was to promote both the undergraduate and postgraduate courses offered within the department.

    Six different Digital Proofing Systems from three different techniques have been evaluated as to technique, printing quality, economy and usability. Digital proof from two paper qualities, coated and uncoated, has been compared with references printed in offset, to see how good they match each other. Only two Proofing Systems manage to print on reference paper. The other Proofing Systems use special paper for digital proof. Measurements and visuell judgement show that the Digital Proofing Systems visualise reference pictures with quite good quality. Proof optimised for coated paper visualise the colours with good result. Proof optimised for uncoated paper shows higher quality than the references, which depends on the surface of the proofing paper. Comparison between reference paper and proofing paper has taken place as to differences in colour and paper quality. The Digital Proofing Systems are fully automatic, which demand a quite comprised education for correct handling. The purchase price and printing costs vary considerably between the Proofing Systems.

    This degree project has been done in parallel to the advertising agency Hera in Uppsala, and contains the creating of a logotype and graphic profile for Aircall, a new big chain of shops dealing with telecommunication. Aircall was found 1 February 2004, when three smaller companies became one. This new company were in need of a common brand and a uniform profile. The created graphic profile has been applied to visiting cards, letterhead, envelopes, letter cards, bags, cars and advertisement. The graphic profile has also been used when designing the shop interior end exterior. Research has been done on competitors graphic profiles and advertisement. The project also contains a deepening in corporate identity.

    This thesis work has introduced process orientation at the printing company Color Print Sweden AB. The outcome of this work is a survey of the work flow at the prepress department. To visualise the production process at the company a comprehensive mapping of the main process, order-to-delivery, has been made. The work has detected a couple of critical elements in the existing process. These elements are the following: initial check of material delivered to the prepress department as well as the control made of the plotter print-out, digital test print and plate. To guarantee the quality of the prints it is very important that the work made in the prepress department is optimized. This survey can therefore be used as a basis for continuous improvement in the processes at Color Print Sweden AB. This work has also resulted in a template that Color Print Sweden AB can use to design routine descriptions to ensure that specific work tasks are performed the right way by everyone and all the time.

    The purpose of this degree project is to come up with a new package to Renat Brännvin for »Vin & Sprit AB« and make the product more attractive on the market of bars, restaurants and hotels. The commission has included to decide the material of the package, whether it´s possible to manufacture the product and to make an estimation of the costs. The conditions that »Vin & Sprit AB« set up was to make the product attractive to a younger target group, in this case people from 20 to 40 years old. As Renat Brännvin is considered to be a product of first class it´s of great importance that the package reflects the look of a premium product. At first we looked at the history of the company »Vin & Sprit AB« and Renat Brännvin. We decided that the package schould consist of a bottle, glasses and a device used when serving the liquor. To get inspiration before sketching we studied different kinds of bottles, glasses and serving devices. We made a lot of different sketches to start with after which we consult with Ingrid Florén – our supervisor from »Vin & Sprit AB« – agreed on one. That one we developed and we made more accurate sketches in 3DStudioMAX. At last we looked at the opportunities to produce the bottle by questioning different manufacturers. We wanted to know the limitations to consider when making a bottle.

    The report describes the production of graphic correspondence and marketing material for DUCIS (Dalarna University Centre for Irish Studies). A logotype symbol is created on the basis of an element from the Celtic art, and a graphic material that harmonies with this ideal of style is built around the symbol. A unique visiting card, correspondence card and letterhead is produced to strengthen the identity of DUCIS outwards. The work proceeds with an international education folder which is an important element in the marketing work for the MA-education which starts in the autumn of 2003. Two posters, one for the opening of DUCIS in may 2003 and one for a conference in 2004, are produced. Finally, a redesign of the book cover for NIS, Nordic Irish Studies, is carried out. The report describes the working process consisting of meetings, practical work and other elements within the process. The conclusion is that the work has been quite successful and that this, to a large extent, depended on an engaged and supporting commissioner. The commissioner also is very satisfi ed with the results. The in-depth studies of the project is about the art and design of the Celtic culture throughout history. The text gives an account for the history and expressions of Celtic art from its birth, 2800 years ago, until its death in 13th century Ireland and Scotland. Special attention is payed to the golden age of Christian Celtic art on the british islands, the era from which the pattern of the DUCIS logotype originates.

    The connection between fluorescence and color management still is a relatively unexplored area. The following composition analyses the theory that when printing on fluorescent ink jet paper using ICCprofiles a more yellow print will appear. In theory the ICC-profile compensate for blue light that fluoresce from the paper with the complementary color, yellow. The human eye apprehands this fluorescent light as white. When categorizing a number of ink jet qualities some tests to indicate change of color in the final print were made. Five qualities were chosen for further analyses, each with different white point. The TC3.5CMYK target was prined on an ink jet printer and measured with different filters for the measurement equipment, GretagMacbeth Spectrolino. U- and UV-filters were used during the testings. From the measurement data ICC-profiles were made to make it possible to watch how the profiles compensate for the blue change of color that appeared in the data. Although a distinct change of color into blue were discernible in the measured data there is no evident proof that this cause a final print that is more yellow. Other conclusions and results are to be read at the end of this composition.

    Bobergs printing house in Falun has during some time had problems regarding deposits on blankets in theirs Müller Martini UV-printing presses. Deposits appear in both image areas and non-image areas. These areas have been analyzed and the deposits on non-image areas contain chalk, clay and talc. The question remains how these material bond to the blanket surface. The chalk and clay comes from the paper. The talc comes from the ink. Deposits from image areas contain pigment and talc from the printing ink. The dampening water has also been analyzed. The result shows some sort of problem with the hardness regulator for the clean water. The pH-level should be increased a few steps.
