    Abstract [en]

This report aims at investigating how traffic management can help disabled and elderly. Although more than 800,000 people travel with SL every day, many elderly and disabled find it difficult to travel using public transportation. Through interviews, different associations representing different disabilities have reported that they feel a lack of information and they feel insecure. Many choose not to travel with public transportation. The investigation has resulted in two different solutions, the advantages and disadvantages of the different solutions are discussed as well. A WEFEEL bracelet that communicates with both the passenger and the bus driver via signals to facilitate the perception that the correct bus is on its way, signal if the traveller has a need for assistance, etc. The second solution proposal WEFIND is ground plates with diodes in the form of arrows that show the path when traffic disturbances occurs and redirects the passengers. Both solutions work for many different groups and also for travellers without special needs (arrows). The solutions take into consideration the environmental issue but have not been further investigated in terms of instalment and economy. The conclusion is that the suggested solutions can help travellers feel safer and thus travel more using public transport.

The determinants of visitor spending: The case study of Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun- Sweden2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Sporting events, which are part of broader tourism industry, bring a range of benefits to the hostcities and regions. These benefits include increase in business activity, job creation, infrastructure development and publicity. Cities and regions spend huge amount of money tohost sporting events. A number of researchers have attempted to investigate the determinants ofvisitors spending at sporting events. However, the factors that influence the visitors spendingappear to be case specific. This study examines the determinants of visitors spending at NordicWorld Ski Championships, Falun 2015. The results suggest that income, number of days spent atthe event and being foreigner are the main determinants of the spending. The results also showthat education, marital status, gender, party size, distance traveled and satisfaction level have nosignificant impact on visitors spending.

Heat transfer tests on EPS material and massive timber wall component2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Timber walls are known to be an energy efficient component in the building envelope.

These building elements are essential in the passive design and have been pointed out to

their ability to regulate the indoor climate and reduce energy demand. Heat transfer

measurements of thermal transmittance value of Iso-timber wall component have been

performed with the climate chamber at three temperature differences. The influence of

temperature variations on the thermal conduction of the wall were investigated. The

temperature on the warm side was kept at room temperature 20 °C while the cold side

temperature was decreased from 0 C to -20 C during the tests. As the temperature

difference is increased, the thermal transmittance value of the timber wall component

decreased slightly due to decrease in the thermal conductivity value. The effect of density

and porosity on the thermal conductivity may be related to the presence of air voids and

cell boundaries inside the timber wall. Results have showed that the U-value of the timber

wall component decreases at higher temperature differences which indicates the higher

degree of insulation of the timber wall component.

    Abstract [en]

Sustainability is a subject which has got a lot of attention during recent years. Demand for businesses to take responsibility for the environment are rising as customers want more information about how companies work with environmental sustainability. It is mandatory since the year 2017 for large companies to disclose this information but for small companies it is still optional. The transport industry has a heavy impact on the environment but is still necessary in modern society, which makes it an interesting industry to study. The purpose of the essay is to examine Swedish transport companies view on sustainability disclosure and how it compares to environmental regulations. The method used in this essay is a qualitative method with four semistructured personal interviews and ten structured telephone interviews.Key findings are that the companies that take part in this essay present sustainability to their customers through reports but not in the financial statement. Sustainability disclosure is not perceived as an issue, environmental regulations such as the new Euroclasses have higher affect on the companies. The most important stakeholders for the companies are the customers, which makes customer relationship valuable.

Möjligheter och risker med sponsorsamarbeten: En studie om vad evenemang beaktar när de ingår sponsorsamarbeten2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine which possibilities and risks an event consider when

they are entering a sponsorship agreement. The results show that the possibilities that were

identified as the main part in a sponsorship agreement for the events included liquid assets or

services. A second possibility that were identified is the sponsorship activation that the

sponsor does which can create an additional value for the event towards their participants and

spectators. A third possibility that was identified in this study was that the brand image

transfer from the sponsor to the event makes it possible for the event to achieve image related

advantages. A fourth possibility, which the events are not fully maximizing, is the opportunity

that comes with co-branding outside the context of the events. The main reason for events to

enter sponsorship agreements is not primarily to strengthen their brand image, other

advantages that the event seeks are seen as the main reasons for the events to enter a

sponsorship agreement. Therefore the events are not fully maximizing the opportunities that

    brand image transfer offers.

The risks that events recognize in a sponsorship agreement primarily consist of image-related

risks. A risk is that an undesired brand image transfer may transfer from the sponsor to the

event and that the events has a hard time to effect any harmful activities that the sponsor may

do outside of the sponsorship context, which can harm the event by negative associations.

Events acknowledge the risks in a sponsorship agreements and one of the events in this study

says that a sponsorship agreement consists of many risks but that they need to take some risks,

because without any sponsors the event would be very dull. Despite the risks, the events are

entering sponsorship agreements because the possibilities outweigh the risks they are taking.

The events in our study was chosen because they are some of the biggest and most wellknown

events in Sweden that occur at a yearly basis, and additionally because they were

considered to have knowledge and experiences about the possibilities and risks that comes

with agreeing sponsorship deals. Qualitative method was the methodological choice of this

study and we used semi-structured interviews to collect data and to learn about the

experiences that our respondents had in the area of which possibilities and risks events are

considering when entering a sponsorship agreement.

Attraktivt arbete ur enhetschefers perspektiv: En kvalitativ studie genomförd i Falu kommun2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Since the 1990s, public organizations underwent several major changes that led to unit managers within the municipal activity increased responsibility and authority, making the unit manager role more complex. Reports indicate difficulties in recruiting and retaining managers. Therefore, it is important to examine how the Head of Unit's, work to develop a more attractive job role. An attractive role is created by giving employees good prospects in the job content, job satisfaction and working conditions. The manager’s positon includes three roles of which the employee role of the theory is not especially priority or made visible. The study aims to identify what makes the unit manager’s profession an attractive job, and how it can be developed. In the study, a qualitative research method has been used to achieve a deeper understanding of the Heads of Unit working situation. This has contributed to a hermeneutic approach being chosen, as we strive to get a better understanding of the phenomenon. The study was conducted in the municipality of Falun, where six heads of units in nursing management were interviewed. The result shows that unit managers are satisfied with their work situation and find their work attractive. Factors as diverse as, freedom, problem solving, social contacts, and portions of the recognition belong to the attractive factors. Heads of Unit describe, three development areas to increase the attractiveness. The first relates to the organization as a whole, where weaknesses exist in the communications and planning. Other development area is about the pace of work by personalizing the working groups as well as time for reflection and recuperation. The third development field the unit managers highlight, is the lack of recognition from the organization. Besides the Heads of Unit shortcomings, we have identified a development area to increase the attractiveness. Lack of colleagues to "bounce ideas" means that work is perceived as lonely. To counteract loneliness we can manage group guidance as an alternative, where reflection and feedback is included. The theory indicate that this also leads to increased self-esteem, commitment.

Intern kontroll: En fallstudie på Trafikverket2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Internal control is something that’s grown more important for enterprises to keep in mind. The community is increasingly affected by the IT-development which demands a bigger degree of security. Enterprises needs to make sure that their systems are up to date and secure enough to keep it safe from unauthorized to take part of sensitive information. Internal control can exist in a major part of the work. If an enterprise have a goal for no harm or serious injury at work, internal control is necessary to reach that goal.

The purpose for this essay is to examine how five different departments of Trafikverket practices internal control. How internal control is described. How the guidance from the managements is described and how it reaches the rest of the enterprise. This will lead to a proposal of improvement of the internal control at Trafikverket.

We focus our frame of reference on the COSO-model and its five components. The components included in the COSO-model are control environment, risk valuation, control activities, information and communication and monitoring.

The essay is a case-study of Trafikverket. We have chosen a qualitative method and interviewed five respondents from the different departments on Trafikverket. The respondents we interviewed works with internal control in their everyday work or have a god insight in the subject. We used a semi structured interview guide with questions based on the COSO framework.

The results from our study shows that it exist big variations between how the departments work with internal control. It emerged that there are new guidelines for how the work should be done. This makes it necessary with education to implement the new ways to work. How the departments use the COSO-model varies. Some of them have incorporated the model in their new ways to work others have never heard of it.

The conclusion of our study shows that the COSO-model and it´s components contribute to a functioning internal control. Implementing the components is important and the most important feature to good internal control is the corporate management. Education within the enterprise is the most effective way to inform the staff about the model and to implement it.

Life cycle assessment of villas made by Fiskarhedenvillan, comparison between wood and brick facade2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Awareness of climate change has resulted in enormous challenges for developed and

developing countries. The frightening truth about our environmental situation has led to

investigations of the causes of these changes and to obstruct these sources gradually but

quickly. The alarming increase of average temperature of the earth has caused much worry

around the world. Gas emissions in the atmosphere greatly affect the environment, where

    CO

2 emissions is one of the most serious factors contributing to the global warming

potential. As the building sector emits 40% of global energy use and one-third of global

greenhouse gas emissions, engineers must be educated to choose the best materials that

    lead to reducing CO

2 emissions. This means selecting materials that have less negative

impact on the environment and are more “environmentally friendly”.

This study shows how much CO

2e emissions are released into the atmosphere from a

wooden structure villa that consists of two stories, a storage and a garage, with a total area

of 229.6m2. The results of this case will be compared to a second case, where the external

wooden siding is replaced with brick veneer. This result of this comparison provides us

with a guideline in for how the selected materials impact the environment, illuminating the

importance in choosing the right materials according to their CO

    2e emission levels. In this

way, the building sector can actively work to reduce the environmental impact.

To achieve these goals, this study performed via life cycle assessment LCA methodology

by using the One-Click LCA program. LCA is identified as a technique to assess the

environmental impact and resources used through a product’s life cycle. This study utilized

the LCA methodology (cradle to grave), which means starting from the extraction of raw

materials, to product production, manufacturing, product usage and its end of life. The

study lifespan was estimated to be 50 years.

The results of the study verify that the wooden villa is more environmentally friendly than

the villa made of brick, where carbon dioxide equivalent emission can be reduced to more

than half by utilizing wood. Implementing the life cycle assessment study to any building

aids in making the decision to choose the right materials for building according to CO

    2e

emission. And in this way, the environmental impact caused by the building sector will be

    greatly reduced.

Incorporating Solar Energy Into an Aluminium Smelter’s Energy Mix: A study using Aluminium Bahrain2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis was aimed at studying the possibility of integrating solar energy in to an existing aluminium smelter in the Kingdom of Bahrain owned by Aluminium Bahrain (ALBA). The smelter was powered by its own in-house natural gas fed power plants. ALBA was chosen as the subject of the study for of two reasons. Firstly, the power station at ALBA was similar in technology to those powering the national grid. Secondly, the nominal power of ALBA was not dissimilar to that of the national grid. This meant that the techniques and technologies investigated were useful in the context of the national grid as well. A literature review was initially conducted to better understand how the current aluminium smelters work, what the possibilities were for introducing solar energy and what has been done previously. The study used publically available information to deduce the energy consumption of the ALBA smelter on an annual basis. For the year 2011 this was found to be in the order of 15.2TWh when ALBA had 2,249MW of nominal plant capacity installed and had consumed about 132MMBCF of natural gas. With the planned pot-line 6 expansion an additional 1,792MW capacity would be added with the corresponding additional gas use and increased energy output. The completion of pot-line 6, scheduled for Q1 2019, would also make ALBA the world’s largest single-site aluminium smelter.  This energy demand information was then used with PVSyst and System Advisor Model simulation software. The aim was to determine what photovoltaic (PV) and concentrated solar power (CSP) energy plants capable of meeting ALBA’s needs would be in terms of power, energy outputs and land usage. Although powering a modern aluminium smelter is possible with today’s solar technology, the area of land required would be very large. It was deduced that using PV fixed tilt arrays, a PV plant of 9.2GWp would be required to deliver the annual energy requirements of ALBA covering a theoretical land area of some 200km2. Utilising CSP plants of central tower and concentric heliostat design would need about 358km2 whereas parabolic trough collector technology would need about 240km2. However a CSP plant utilising linear Fresnel collectors would need about 105km2 of land area. These contiguous land areas are not available in the Kingdom of Bahrain and so alternatives would have to be studied for locating such plants. Another issue would be to find a robust and reliable storage technology to power the plant during the evenings and other times of low solar resource.  It was found that the existing roof areas of ALBA’s pot-lines and cast house would be sufficient to house a PV plant of 6.5MWp utilising standard 250Wp PV modules. This would be larger than the largest plant currently installed in the country which stands at 5MWp developed by Bapco. The plant would produce some 9.7GWh of energy per average year and could be utilised by ALBA. Alternatively, the PV plant could be connected directly to the national grid and thus provide another source of income to ALBA whilst helping in the national drive for harnessing renewable energy. It should be noted that there are more suitable roof areas available at ALBA meaning that the PV plant size could be larger and if more powerful modules are used, the nominal plant capacity would also be increased delivering more annual energy. Due mainly to time constraints, it was not possible to investigate some areas that were highlighted during the course of the study. These included plant costs, energy storage options, modelling and simulating CSP derived heat injection into gas power turbines, water usage requirements and mitigation techniques and the technologies for maintaining the collectors clean and reflective in the harsh desert climate of the country. These are all areas for further work.

Robustness in constructing a network of induced emissions based on GPS-tracking data2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The mobility of people, freight and information is fundamental to economic and social activities such as commuting, manufacturing, distributing consumer goods and supplying energy. There are two major problems that arise as a result of mobility. The first is economic cost and the second is environmental impact which is of increasing concern in sustainable development due to emission levels, particularly as a result of car use. This study focuses on constructing a network of induced emissions (NOIEs) by using three models and checking the robustness of NOIEs under varying parameters and models. The three models are Stead’s model, the NAEI model, and Oguchi’s model. This study uses the Swedish city of Borlänge as the case study.

Calculating CO2 emissions by constructing the NOIEs using Stead’s model appears to give an underestimation when compared to results from a NOIEs which applies Oguchi’s model. Results when applying the NAEI model in constructing a NOIEs also give an underestimation compared to a NOIEs applying Oguchi’s model. Applying the NAEI model is, however, more accurate than applying Stead’s model in constructing a NOIEs.

The outcomes of this study show that constructing a NOIEs is robust using Oguchi’s model. This model is preferable since it takes into account more important variables such as driving behavior and the length of the road segments which have a significant impact when estimating CO2 emissions.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis is based on a survey within a global organization. The purpose of the study is to

elucidate and describe an HR department's experience of the psychosocial work environment.

The starting point for this survey is that there are known factors that affect the psychosocial

work environment. Furthermore, the study aimed to motivate the organization to work with

    the psychosocial work environment.

The theory is that these factors are based on assumption that the psychosocial work

environment is affected by excessive workload, lack of control, lack of recognition,

community at work, role conflicts and conflicts of values (Åsberg, Grape, Nygren, Rohde,

Wahlberg, & Währborg, 2010) (Thylefors, 2011). Skills and ability to influence the

workplace are also important factors (Wreder, 2007). Knowledge, communication and good

leadership is therefore the foundation for a viable psychosocial work environment.

The survey is based on a deductive approach, in which participants initially putting a value of

factors through a quantitative survey, for a few weeks later to discuss the factors of

qualitative focus groups. The purpose of the survey was to obtain an anonymous individual

estimation of the experience, while the purpose of the focus groups was to obtain deeper

information about the experience and how employees perceive that the psychosocial work

    environment can be improved.

The results were interpreted based on the theory and several factors had the potential to be

improved. To conduct an adequate work environment, it is important to identify the factors

and work with them in a way that the employees perceive current. Furthermore, it is

important for the organisations to work with the psychosocial working from an organizational

perspective, and not just primarily the individual perspective.

    Abstract [en]

Data migration in migration projects have a big chance of failure caused by underestimating the weight and importance of planning for the migration of data between systems. The most common cause of failure is by having inadequate validation. Therefore, knowing what one should be aware of to minimize the risk of data migration will be of help.

This includes steps from David Barkaway for data migration projects about how to gather and retain generated knowledge for future projects. This also includes steps of how to perform data migration and avoid common causes of failure.

Based on the collected theory, interview questions will be written that enables me to create criteria a list of criteria for evaluating tools for data migration.

In this study I have chosen two different tools to evaluate. I will interview four IT-consultants with experience of data migration to best answer which criteria these tools should fulfill to be of interest for these four IT-consultants.

    These tools are:

    1. SQL-Server Integrated Services: A service from Microsoft within the .Net-environment for datamigration och Business Intelligence.

    2. Talend Open Studio for Data Integration: A product from Talend made in java and is open-source, used for data migration.

The result shows that Talend fulfills more of the criteria than SSIS does.

Estimation and interpretation of genetic effects with epistasis using the NOIA model2012In: Quantitative trait loci (QTL): Methods and Protocols / [ed] Scott A. Rifkin, Humana Press, 2012, p. 191-204Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

We introduce this communication with a brief outline of the historical landmarks in genetic modeling, especially concerning epistasis. Then, we present methods for the use of genetic modeling in QTL analyses. In particular, we summarize the essential expressions of the natural and orthogonal interactions (NOIA) model of genetic effects. Our motivation for reviewing that theory here is twofold. First, this review presents a digest of the expressions for the application of the NOIA model, which are often mixed with intermediate and additional formulae in the original articles. Second, we make the required theory handy for the reader to relate the genetic concepts to the particular mathematical expressions underlying them. We illustrate those relations by providing graphical interpretations and a diagram summarizing the key features for applying genetic modeling with epistasis in comprehensive QTL analyses. Finally, we briefly review some examples of the application of NOIA to real data and the way it improves the interpretability of the results.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Isakssons AB is the manufacturer of custom-designed products and efficient solutions in stainless steel, constructional metalwork and environmental technology. The company is currently going through an expansion phase, which leads to greater requirements for the production. In order to cope with this expansion, they have chosen to rebuild their premises, and these changes must be adapted for the production to enable further growth for the company.  The purpose of this study is to give improvement proposals to a more effective production process at a manufacturing company with varying products. In order to create understanding for the process, flowcharts, process mapping’s and time studies have been executed. By performing a zero state analysis, improvement opportunities have been discovered, and changes have been proposed from these.  The results from the frequency studies show that the operators spend a lot of time on work that is non valuable for the product. By creating more workstations for manufacturing and introducing visual workplace aids, these non valuable activities can be reduced. Furthermore, the re-locating of machines and inventory have been suggested, in order to create an easier flow through the premises.

Understanding Rural Change: Demography as a key to the future2007In: Futures: The journal of policy, planning and futures studies, ISSN 0016-3287, E-ISSN 1873-6378, Vol. 39, no 4, p. 363-379Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The last decades have seen a rapidly growing interest in foresight methodology. Methods have been developed in corporate and governmental communication exercises often labelled technology foresight. In reality, these foresights have often drifted into processes of social change, since technological change is hard to foresee beyond what is already in the pipe-line. Forecasting of social change, however, must be based on solid knowledge about the mechanisms of continuity and change. Virtually nothing can be said about the future without relating to the past; foresights and futures studies are about revealing the hidden pulse of history. Hence, the answer to forecasting the future is empirical research within the social sciences. Demographic change has been recognised as a key determinant for explaining social change. Population changes are fairly predictable and the age transition can explain a wide range of socio-economic changes. For rural futures, demographic change is a key issue, since age structure in rural areas is often uneven and also unstable due to migration patterns. A number of policy related questions as well as research challenges are raised as a consequence.

    Abstract [sv]

One-Year Master’s Degree in Tourism Destination Development Will it snow?: Sierra Nevada Ski Resort stakeholders’ perceptions of climate change2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Its strong dependency on weather conditions makes winter tourism especially vulnerable to

climate change. Ski industry operators’ knowledge about the possible scale and effects of

global warming is essential for adopting effective mitigation and adaptation measures. This

study it’s focused in the ski resort located in Sierra Nevada, Spain, the southernmost ski

resort in Europe. Using a qualitative approach, in-depth interviews were conducted. Although

the findings generally indicate a good knowledge of climate change, the stakeholders

perceive the issue as a global phenomenon. Stakeholders downplayed the scale of the

phenomenon at regional scale. They did not perceive climate change as a real or immediate

risk to the ski industry in Sierra Nevada. Consequently it was found a poor perceived need to

adapt to the issue. Furthermore, no adaptation strategies were found directly linked to climate

variability. Stakeholders identified technically produced snow as a business strategy to deal

with the increasing demand and competitiveness. Adaptation to climate change in Sierra

Nevada’s ski tourism was found reactive and autonomous. The main limits found to

adaptation were the lack of accurate and region-specific information about climate change

and the lack of cooperation and communication between the private and public sector.

On Occurrence Of Plagiarism In Published Computer Science Thesis Reports At Swedish Universities2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

In recent years, it has been observed that software clones and plagiarism are becoming an increased threat for one?s creativity. Clones are the results of copying and using other?s work. According to the Merriam – Webster dictionary, “A clone is one that appears to be a copy of an original form”. It is synonym to duplicate. Clones lead to redundancy of codes, but not all redundant code is a clone. On basis of this background knowledge ,in order to safeguard one?s idea and to avoid intentional code duplication for pretending other?s work as if their owns, software clone detection should be emphasized more. The objective of this paper is to review the methods for clone detection and to apply those methods for finding the extent of plagiarism occurrence among the Swedish Universities in Master level computer science department and to analyze the results. The rest part of the paper, discuss about software plagiarism detection which employs data analysis technique and then statistical analysis of the results. Plagiarism is an act of stealing and passing off the idea?s and words of another person?s as one?s own. Using data analysis technique, samples(Master level computer Science thesis report) were taken from various Swedish universities and processed in Ephorus anti plagiarism software detection. Ephorus gives the percentage of plagiarism for each thesis document, from this results statistical analysis were carried out using Minitab Software. The results gives a very low percentage of Plagiarism extent among the Swedish universities, which concludes that Plagiarism is not a threat to Sweden?s standard of education in computer science. This paper is based on data analysis, intelligence techniques, EPHORUS software plagiarism detection tool and MINITAB statistical software analysis.

Knowledge retention in Vietnam-based ManagementConsulting SMEs2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Aim:

The overall aim of the thesis is to describe and understand how Vietnam-based

management consulting SMEs retain organizational knowledge in cases of employees’ departure

and further develop strategies for knowledge retention.

    Methodology:

Qualitative research via semi-structured interviews in 2 Vietnam-based

management consulting SMEs (1 medium-sized company and 1 small company) was conducted.

    Findings:

Knowledge retention is still a rather new concept in the Vietnamese context,

interestingly, however; some knowledge retention initiatives have been unconsciously

implemented by Vietnam-based management consulting SMEs. Small-sized companies, which

suffer more from resource scarcity in terms of human, finance, time, tend to be less active in

knowledge retention than medium-size companies. More efforts have been put in retaining tacit

knowledge by management consulting SMEs in Vietnam. Among the factors influencing

knowledge retention, leadership is seen to be the key factor to decide the successful

implementation of knowledge retention of Vietnam-based management consulting SMEs.

Vietnamese culture is also found to have indirect impacts (either positive or negative) on

knowledge retention through other factors (leadership, organizational culture, personal attitudes),

however the effect of national culture on knowledge retention varies from firm to firm, largely

    depends on SMEs’ leadership.

    Practical implications:

Considering the important roles of leaders in the implementation of

knowledge retention, training on leadership skills is highly recommended. Furthermore, trainings

on interpersonal skills and personal attitudes towards knowledge retention also need attention.

On top of that, it is essential to build up an organizational culture that facilitates knowledge

retention and provides appropriate organizational supports (affordable IT systems that suit

SMEs’ needs, extrinsic together with intrinsic rewards). Last but not least, knowledge retention

activities are recommended to be integrated into daily operations to cope with the issues related

to time constraints faced by management consulting SMEs.

Säkerhet i molntjänster: Starka autentiseringsmetoder, federeringslösningar & säkerhetshot mot autentisering i moln2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Techno-Economic Analysis of Solar Options for a Block Heating System2016In: Conference Proceedings: Eurosun 2016, Palma De Mallorca: International Solar Energy Society, 2016, , p. 16Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

An innovative small solar district heating system with one central heating plant and four solar substations has been built in Vallda Heberg, Sweden, to supply a new housing area with passive houses. The target solar fraction was 40% and the total system design, including heat distribution in the buildings, was based on previous experience and aimed to be simple and cost-effective. The main aim of this study was to determine whether the system can be designed in a more effective manner by change of distribution system and load density. TRNSYS models were calibrated against measured data and then used to predict the energy performance. Results indicate that lower distribution heat losses can be obtained by change to a distribution concept with lower operating temperatures, while potentially reducing cost. Changes in heat density cause reduced distribution losses and boiler supplied heat demand, with only minor effects on solar system yield.

    Abstract [en]

New buildings will only maginally contribute to future quantity of residential housing. Therefor new knowledge of past building technics are required, to asses which action propsals are suitable when interventions are considered. Objective. This study aims to evaluate lightweight timber joist floors in a multi-story residential building from 1903, with regard to footfall noise and deflection. Method. Data has been collected with a survey and through measurements of footfall noise and deflection. The purpose of the survey is to evaluate the residentals subjective perception of footfall noise and deflection. Footfall noise has been measured with a tapping machine in accordance with Swedish Standards. The deflection has been measured with Leica NA2 paired with a parallel-plate micrometer, GFS1, for precise leveling assessment. Results. The survey shows that the residents don’t experience any issues with regard to footfall noise and deflection. The measurements show a L’nT,w+CI,50-2500 level of 55 dB and an average deflection of 0.320 mm/kN. Conclusion. Footfall noise- and deflection levels satisfy today’s requirements according to Swedish Standards and therefor the results doesn’t motivate any action proposals or interventions.

Pappersmakulatur vid Bobergs Tryckeri AB - orsaker och förbättringsförslag2003Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This paper describes how distance educations in developing countries can enhance interactivityby means of information and communication technologies. It is argued that e-learning involvesa shift in the educational structure from traditional transmission of knowledge to interactivecreation of knowledge. Our case studies are two distance educations in Bangladesh and SriLanka that use different technologies for implementing interactivity; Internet and computersin one case and video and mobile phones in the other. The findings are analyzed based onStructuration Theory and we compare the two approaches based on emerging norms andbeliefs. Findings from both cases show the concurrent enactment of both the transmissionand the interactive structure. Whereas peer collaboration and the use of self-assessment toolsmake students take more ownership of their learning, we also found the idea of a classroomwith an instructive teacher to be deeply rooted in the students’ minds.

Victim, Mother, or Untapped Resource? Discourse Analysis of the Construction of Women in ICT Policies2017In: Information Technologies & International Development, ISSN 1544-7529, Vol. 13, no 2017, p. 72-86Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article analyzes the construction of women in national ICT policies in South and Southeast Asia. The aim is to unravel the role ascribed to women in these policies and how this affects suggested measures. The research is based on critical discourse analysis and shows that women are mainly constructed as victims, mothers, or an untapped resource. We argue that if women are speciªcally targeted in policies, careful attention should be given to how they are portrayed. Our analysis also shows that in most cases the suggested solutions on how to include women in the ICT society only deal with the symptoms of gender inequality rather than the structures that prevent equal opportunities. We conclude by discussing implications for research and practice.

    Abstract [en]

There is a debate about the advantages and disadvantages of using social media in education. Drawing on interviews and surveys with students and teachers in three Swedish schools, this study finds that studentsas well as teachers find much of the students' social media use distractive to learning. We investigate this by means of an interpretative study of students' and teachers' experiences. We find that concerns relate to how social media use makes students less social, how weaker students are more likely to get distracted, how teachers lack strategies for tackling the problem and how the responsibility of the use is delegated to the students. We discuss how the distractive use of social media is made possible as a result of education policies requiring a higher degree of individual work, individual responsibility, and educational choices forstudents. Teachers and school leaders need to jointly reclaim the students and coping strategies for the distractive use are urgently needed.

    Abstract [en]

In this paper we explore how laptops used in 1:1 classrooms affect cooperation and collaboration practices. Based on an observational time study we find that the most common activity in 1:1 classrooms is group work using the computer. We also found that despite what the concept 1:1 alludes about one student working with one computer, most laptop use takes on other forms such as two students working with one computer (1:2) or two students working together using two laptops (2:2). The findings reported in this paper about the various different collaboration arrangements have implications for both research and practice. Practice because teachers can arrange activities based on an awareness of the different student-laptop constellations that emerge when students are given a laptop. Research is likewise informed about the various group work constellations and can build on this knowledge for further analysis of the pros and cons with the different collaborative forms.

En kvalitativ studie om sportchefers förklaring till den höga omsättningen inom SHL och Hockeyallsvenskan i svensk elitishockey.2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

End of signal has just passed. The team you work for has just won the championship, and you

as sport director hailed as a hero based on your ability to build a successful team. The season

after looks differently, you are painted as guilt and the association begins to lose patience.

The pressure of external stakeholders grows and it ends with the association choosing to fire

you. Another scenario is the feelings that the excessive workload will be your failure, which

will let you resign from your service as sports director. Being a sports director in a

performance-based world places high demands on you as an individual, both holding

knowledge about Ice hockey, but also to handle for example economic and legal issues.

Almost half of all sports directors have become unemployed or stopped themselves in recent

seasons. It becomes clear that the role and the requirement image become complex. That

reason makes it interesting to explain this problem.

The study has been conducted by making

qualitative interviews with the selection of sports directors in SHL and Hockeyallsvenskan in

Swedish elite Hockey. SHL (Swedish Hockey League) is the highest league and

Hockeyallsvenskan is the second highest league in Swedish Elite Hockey.

The purpose of this study has been the sports leaders’ explanation for the high turnover in

SHL and Hockeyallsvenskan in Swedish elite Hockey.

The purpose of this study has developed two issues that will form the basis of the study:

    1. What are the factors behind the high turnover of the sports directors?

    2. Is the responsibility of the associations or the sports directors for the high turnover?

The result of this study shows that there are combinations of different factors that are behind

the high turnover of sports directors in Swedish Elite Hockey. One factor is the diffuse

requirement picture from the association on what is expected of the sports director. The

sports director’s role in the organization is not clear enough. This leads to a collision in which

the associations have not identified the skills required in the role. Furthermore, there is a lack

of continuity and long term relationships with the associations where confidence in the sports

director immediately reduces in the event of non-sporting results. The result also shows that

the impact of external factors, combined with excessive workload, leads to terminations in

the profession. Finally, it may be noted that the role of sports director requires good

competence in matters that are included in the role of a chief. The lack of competencies

within the management leads to difficulties for the sports director to handle the issues that

    include tough decisions.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The report describes the work behind the development of a portable water hydraulic system that will be used to open and close a floodgate if the regular hydraulic system used for this is inoperative. The aim was to achieve the same performance as a portable oil hydraulic system, which could be achieved with the exception that oil could not be avoided completely.

The project was carried out in collaboration with Mobin Hydraulic AB, which develops hydraulic systems for opening and closing floodgates. Mobin specializes in water hydraulics, which is a more environmentally friendly alternative compared with oil hydraulics. As an interest was also on the market where eco-friendly solutions were increasingly demanded, the portable water hydraulic system was of interest to both Mobin and the market.

The problems were about how the flow was to be controlled and what pump and hydraulic engine could be used in the system. The components would be adapted to water and harmonize with a predetermined petrol engine while delivering desired performance.

By studying hydraulics and water properties and impact on the hydraulic system in combination with taking part in Mobin's experience, an image of the system's structure and components was created.

Based on a component search, calculations and design of concepts a concept selection was made where the selected components, component dimensions and placements in the system were displayed. Due to the limited availability of water hydraulics components, gearboxes were used to get the right speed and torque. One of the gearboxes contained oil and therefore it was not possible to completely avoid oil use.

    Abstract [en]

International research has shown that annual reports are not an obvious source of information för private investors and their investment decisions. In Sweden there is a limited amount of empirical data that shows how this is represented in the swedish stock market. Because of this there is also a lack of empirical data that shows if there is a correlation betweeen the use of and opinion on the relevance of annual reports and the individuals background within economy or business

A survey was made to gather answers to these questions using members of Sveriges Aktiesparares Riksförbund and the local branch Falun/Borlänge. The results show that annual reports neither can be categorized as important or unimportant withing this group. The respondants in this survey seem to prefer to use more than one source of information when it comes to investment decisions. The results indicate that annual reports can be considered a relatively important part of this bigger context as one of many sources of information. In addition to this, it seems that a person that either have a relevant education or occupational experience value annual reports as more important than those without this background.

    Abstract [en]

Software deployment can be seen as the process where all activities are included to make a software available to users without a manual installation on the user’s computer or other machine. There are several software deployment tools that manage automated installations available to enterprises on the market today.

The department HVDC at ABB in Ludvika has needs of starting to use a tool for automated installations of software which currently is installed manually and is time consuming. As Microsoft partners ABB wants to see how Microsoft’s tool for software deployment could help for this need.

Our study aimed to investigate how the department´s work with installations of software looks like today and to find opportunities for improvement for installations that can’t be automated at this time. The study also includes to develop a general framework for how businesses can proceed when they want to start using a software deployment tool. The framework also includes a designed requirement specification that will be evaluated against Microsoft´s tool.

To create an idea of how the work in the business looks like today, we have performed surveys and interviews with staff in HVDC. In order to develop a framework, we have used the data collected from the interviews, questionnaires and group interviews conducted to identify requirements and wishes from the staff of a software deployment tool. Literature studies were also conducted to create a theoretical framework to use when developing the framework and the requirement specification.

Our studies have resulted in a description of software deployment, opportunities for improvement in the work of software installations and a general framework that describes how businesses can proceed when they are about to start using a software deployment tool. The framework also provides a set of requirements that have used to evaluate Microsoft's tool for software distribution. In our study we have not seen that anyone before have developed a general framework and requirements specification that businesses can use as a basis when to start using a software deployment tool. Our results of the study can cover up this knowledge gap.

    Abstract [en]

Arctic Paper Grycksbo is a company that produces paper. The pulp which is used to produce the paper is purchased. The pulp arrives to Arctic Paper in bales which are wrapped with something called wrapping paper. The wrapping paper is similar to the pulp inside of the wrapping, which means it can be used to produce paper. Damage on the bales due to transportation and handling leads to usable pulp being removed from the bales which falls to the ground. The pulp which is removed from the bales remains on the ground (pulp rests) until workers pick it up and place it in a recycling container. This container is then to be emptied and the pulp recycled, if the procedure is working as intended.

The current recycling procedure has proven to be in need of improvement. This has led to a need of an improvement, either by improving the method/procedure to recycle the pulp, or through preventing the pulp being removed from the bales in the first place. The purpose with this thesis is to investigate- and suggest solutions to which possibilities for improvements there is.

An investigation of which alternative to achieve this improvement is the better- and calculations of the annual recycling potential has been done. Different concepts has then been generated based on information gathered from the investigation and calculations.

A new way of handling the pulp which is to be recycled has been suggested in consultation with technicians from Arctic Paper. The suggested new method/procedure enables easier recycling in terms of manual labour and reduces the total costs of the procedure.

    Abstract [en]

    Introduction

: It has become increasingly difficult to protect personal data due to the rapidly evolving technological development. Personal data flow between countries to a large extent, which requires more coherent data protection within the European Union. In May 25th 2018, a new EU regulation will come into force. The regulation will apply in all EU member states and is called GDPR, the General Data Protection Regulation. The regulation will contribute to an increasingly rigorous handling and processing of personal data and hence strengthen the individual's integrity. How the change of law will affect business's marketing efforts is a matter that has emerged.

    Purpose:

The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to gain knowledge of how companies adapt to the change that GDPR entails and whether changes need to be made in corporate marketing efforts due to GDPR.

    Method:

The bachelor thesis is inductive and the empirical material is collected using qualitative interviews. A total of nine interviews have been conducted, three mail interviews and six telephone interviews. The companies that have participated in this study works with marketing and handles personal data.

    Results:

The interviewed companies in the study do not believe that their marketing will be significantly affected. Some companies have and will change certain parts of the communication to the customer, such as changing member terms, clearing personal information, and changes in email and newsletters. In order to get GDPR compliant, most companies educate their employees and clean and enhance their registers.

    Abstract [en]

Background: This study is based on how seven nurses experience their work situation in relation to attractive work and what makes them motivated to stay in their workplace. For many years, the department has had a good reputation and there has been low staff turnover among the nurses. The last three to five years, the trend has begun to turn around and staff turnover has started to increase. This means that the knowledge-intensive department faces the challenge of succeeding in retaining its workforce in order to not risk losing the experience, knowledge and expertise the patients need in their care. This is a topical issue when the Swedish healthcare system is faced with challenges in retaining nurses. At the same time, savings in healthcare are increasing the cost of hired labor. The forecasts show that the population is increasing and living longer and at the same time large retirements are taking place. This creates an unsustainable situation where the experience that exists has to be preserved, which means that organizations need to work to become attractive employers in order to be able to maintain nurses.

Purpose: To investigate which factors that nurses at a care ward in Dalarna experience important in order to stay in their workplace.

Method: We have moved within the hermeneutic interpretation theory where the direction goes towards interpreting, studying and understanding. In order to investigate the background to individuals choosing to stay in a workplace, we chose a qualitative approach. Qualitative research is presented as contextual because the research is understood in its context in order to increase the understanding of the phenomenon under investigation.

Result: What emerged from this study is that colleagues are an important motivating factor to stay in the workplace. Most of the nurses who participated in the study feel that everyone's efforts in the department are important. Good cooperation between colleagues contributes to security in the role and a feeling that experiences are valued. Although nurses appreciate working in teams, something that is significant in healthcare, it appears that they want to be recognized for their achievements on an individual level. They are specialists in their profession and feel that the skills development given at the workplace makes them want to stay. At the same time, they want better working conditions in the form of flexible working hours and wages that reflect their performance. They also want a management that is visible in the day-to-day operations and it is appreciated when the management implements improvement proposals that benefit the working conditions.

Discussion: It`s not possible to ignore the challenges facing the department. The reflections from the nurses regarding the desire to remain in the workplace were affected by the current situation and the challenges they experienced in their working conditions, which also affects the factors that are considered attractive.

    Abstract [en]

In the communication industry, the competition is challenging amongst both new graduates looking for employment and those with experience. An im-portant part of the application is a portfolio that visually shows the person's skills and talents. An online questionnaire survey of 50 firms in the communications industry was used to investigate how they recruit new staff, as well as their perspective on the portfolio in this context. The study is also aimed at highlighting differences in the responses, depending on the size of the agencies. The results of the survey showed that the most common way for employment in the communications industry is through personal contacts, and that the quality of the portfolio is the most important when hiring. When applying for a job the agencies preferred to receive a digital portfolio, but at a job interview they pre-ferred a combination of a physical and digital portfolio. Minor differences were found in the responses depending on the size of the agency.
