    Abstract [sv]

A main aim with the essay “Constructive and destructive forms of language communication in modern work organizations” is to try to develop methods which can be used to measure and classify different forms of language communication. Methods that hopefully also can be used for analysis of in which ways dominating language communication forms affects employees health in modern work organizations. Quantitative methods have chiefly been used in the essay. A questionnaire study based on sociological research and psychoterapeutic research and practice has been used to collect data around communication in two work organizations (community health centers). Then communication has been classified in two main forms: constructive and destructive language communication. Results in the essay indicate that there are tendencies to links between high illness-absence and destructive communication in a work organization. In the work organization with the highest illness-absence, during a chosen period of inquiry (2005), a larger share of the employees stated that the communications in their organization were destructive, compared to the employees in the organization which showed the lowest illness-absence. Statistically secured links between high illness-absence and destructive communication have however not been observed.

    Abstract [en]

The interest in crime and the individuals behind the criminal acts are increasing in society and

reported in the media daily. It is the individual behind the crime, whom has served his

sentence that this study is focusing on. When the prison gates opens and re-entry into society

is a fact; How does these individuals re-entry into the community and once again become a

    part of it?

The purpose of this study is to investigate the reintegration strategies that released prisoners

use and how society's attitude influences. The study is based on five autobiographies written

by four writers who all lived a criminal life and who all served one or several times in prison.

The result shows that there are several reintegration strategies put into service. That includes

seeking the help and support from family, friends, or other social groups. Further, they’re

seeking a "new identity", which often occurs with the help of faith throughout religion. To

work, give something back to the community, show their creativity in order to regain its

credibility can be seen as the final and most important strategy. Finally, could a link between

society's treatment and rehabilitation strategies ascertained. The more negative the response

is, the more rehabilitation strategies are needed and work to achieve them more demanding.

An attitude that is in the spirit of encouragement of the individual's change means that fewer

strategies are needed and the risk of relapse is less.

    Abstract [sv]

The integration policy in Sweden shall encourage individuals to support themselves and take part in society. It shall also contribute to equal rights and opportunities for women as well as for men. In Borlänge this has resulted in a program of introduction for new arrivals from other countries. However, at the unit responsible for economic support, they have discovered that women with immigrant background more often than men seem to have trouble starting or became to an ending of the program, which then especially leads women to a long-term dependence for economic support. The purpose of this study has therefore been to investigate what factors affect immigrant women’s participation in the introduction, and what significance this participation has for their possibilities to become economically self-supporting, and integrated into Swedish society. Previous research shows that some of the obstacles for the integration of immigrant women can be that they give birth to many children, are unskilled or have a low degree of education and that they tend to be living under patriarchal gender patterns. Another problem seem to be that some women are not even known as members of the municipalities. All of these problems are as well what was shown in my own study. I have used theoretical perspectives from Bourdieu, Elias & Scotson, Giddens, Roman and al-Baldawi in my analysis. Bourdieu have interesting thoughts about capital, habitus and field, which can help us to understand how individuals are being shaped and are given different opportunities to act in a special way or direction. Elias & Scotson describes through their study around established and outsiders how the process of integration can take place and what effects that can be shown for the opportunities to succeed in that part. Giddens, Roman and al-Baldawi then give us different ways to look at the patriarchy and family structures around the world. The result of this study shows that the willingness to integrate and be able to take care of your own support for living is an important part for the women for succeeding. For the other women, that don’t succeed, it turns out to be just like the previous research has been shown. Gender patterns, many children and a low or no education skill all seems to be part of the issue. It is also suggested that the generosity of the Swedish welfare system might hinder rather than help some immigrant women to become integrated into Swedish society.

Stigmatisering i arbetslivet: En kvalitativ studie om arbetsplatsmobbning och normpåverkan2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study has been to create a deeper understanding of bullying, and based on stories examine how workplace bullying is perceived and apply a sociological perspective on the phenomenon. The study has had a qualitative and narrative orientation, where the data material consisting of eight previously published life stories has been analyzed using Goffman's stigma theory, as well as Eriksson's system theory. In the analysis, the data material has also been related to previous research. In our interpretations of the stories, we found different themes for how bullying is experienced. These were divided into origin, character and consequences.

Our study explains the origin of bullying by individuals violating current norms regarding the social context at workplaces. The norm breaking act allows the individual to be stigmatized and punished. The study shows that sanctioning by exploitation was common and bullying could have serious consequences for the victim. Exposed persons can develop a negative self-image and experience shameful feelings. The result also shows that vulnerable people often end up in a disease state and the re-entry to the workplace tends to fail.

HBT sexualitet: -ur ett explorativt sociologiskt maktperspektiv2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

(The municipal authority as a rationalist ideal - a case-study on steering and scope for initiative within child-care, education and environmental departments.) A municipal authority is a considerable producer of services in the local community and is commonly perceived as an important sector of the Swedish welfare system. One aspect of a well-functioning municipal organisation is that its administrative organs function efficiently. This study examines how activities in municipal administration are steered. The focus is on how different methods are used within a vertical hierarchical perspective to influence the actions of the participants and how the latter try to create space for action. To analyse the problem an ideal-type steering model is used. The study consists of three sections. In the first the research problem and the aims of the study are introduced as well as the methodological and theoretical approach. The result of the study is presented in the second section and in the third conclusions are drawn and discussed. The study shows that the perceptions of the participants involved regarding the possibilities of steering the everyday activities with the support of the methods studied differ on a number of points depending on the sector studied. When control of the various steering methods is distributed in different organisational units in the municipality a number of steering mechanisms operate side-by-side, sometimes in harmony and sometimes independently or in pure conflict with their goals. Steering leads to clear restrictions but there is clearly room for initiative, a ‘free-zone’ where the individual has room to act independently. Is it possible based on this study to state whether the ideal-type model functions in the way intended? On many accounts it would seem doubtful whether the effects of steering lead to beneficial effects for the activity. Rather it would seem that the effects of steering sometimes function more or less randomly because the administration exists in a complex context in which the staff can be expected to have its own expectations and act in accordance with them.

Åldersgrupper – synlighet och vardagsproblem: En social konstruktion med påverkan av dåtid, nutid och framtid2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Individuals in society have an ability to deal with each other based on others age. Older considered and addressed in a way, young adults in a different and young people in another way. These behaviors are often based in notions of individual knowledge and ability to take their own decisions and what problems they are experiencing as great in their lives. The structure of society with rules and laws are involved in producing these performances that lead to age is a social construction that segregate age groups from each other.

Several papers have been made in the field of age discrimination focused on stereotypical perceptions of older people. In recent years, it has also begun to achieve several studies that show that age discrimination is something that concerns the whole of society, to include or exclude individuals based on their age.

With this essay, I would like to highlight the fact that age can be a leading factor that creates stereotypical perceptions of others in the community. Based on materiel is an individual's subjective experience of the ages are visible in the society and the problems they think reality individuals in other ages are experiencing. The text also present how individuals view their own age and what age group they feel they belong.

The entire study is based on an online survey of 141 respondents between from 16 year old, which means that the participant has passed 79 year. By the size of the material and subjectivity should this paper be met with an open mind and curiosity for further study.

Att vara ”manlig” i hederskultur…: En kvalitativ studie om unga männens maskulinitetsideal i förhållande till den svenska skolans värdegrunder2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Stigma of bi- and homosexual is something that is common. The purpose of this

study is to highlight the bi- and homosexual persons stigmatized position in

society. The study was conducted based on a qualitative method where eight

interviews were conducted. The questions asked concerned the informant´s own

experiences and opinions on how family, friends and surroundings affect

informants' romantic relationships and emotions. Our result show that the

problems that arise when one comes out as bisexual or homosexual usually occurs

within families. It is common to bi- and homosexual persons exposed to stigma

and alienation when they are open with their feelings and romantic relationships.

They do not show feelings openly to their family because they don´t feel

comfortable with it. That bi- and homosexual persons are treated differently

because of their sexual orientation occurs. Both physical and mental abuse, as well

as discrimination have been identified. Overall, there are perceptions that it is

more difficult to live as bisexual than gay. Bi persons are more stigmatized, even

    within the queer society.

Democratic Deficit in the EU: Towards Parliamentary Democracy?!2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Nowadays, the western societies are based on parliamentary democracy. Therefore, weak legislative power of the European Parliament is alleged for the democratic deficit in the EU. How it can be possible that the parliamentary democracy which is practiced on the national level can be achieved beyond the nation-states without diminishing the democracy at the nation-states? If not, how legitimacy can be obtained so that the continued existence and expansion of the EU should be justified? Since expectations for democratization of the EU are still unmet, finding answers to the actual questions is a great appeal. The thesis will explore the fundamental debates and arguments contributing to the democracy in the EU through the parliaments. I will try to reflect to the different ways of thinking and the prospects of establishing parliamentary democracy beyond the nation states.

"Snacka om att känna sig helt onödig på jorden!": En kvalitativ studie av självbiografiska berättelser om upplevelser av mobbning2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In this essay we have used a qualitative interview approach to study the #Metoo movement that took place during 2017. Our aim has been to examine if ordinary Swedish citizens may have changed their views of sexual harassment in the wake of #Metoo, and if #Metoo and gender has contributed to these changes. We have carried out 8 interviews, 4 of them with men and 4 of them with women, all aged 22-25 years old and not in any close relationships or with children. Using several theories on gender roles, power structures and sex-related crimes, we put our empirical material into a theoretical context, seeking to find if our chosen theories could provide deeper explanations to the stories of our respondents and the themes we had ourselves identified. We found that the theories we had picked correlated well with our empirical material, with one important exception. While our respondents described several aspects of gender roles, power structures and sex-related crimes, the men never expressed a desire to maintain and uphold the older relationships of power within society, and instead attributed those reasonings to belong to the older generation. This turned out to partially contradict the prediction we had found in the theories. Our conclusion with this study is that there is a renewed foundation present in the viewpoints of our interviewees towards further development of the Swedish society to provide a just and equal everyday life for both women and men, to continue changing traditional gender roles and distributions of power, and that #Metoo has played a central role in that reinforcement. While these processes have been ongoing for many decades, we feel that our study has shown that #Metoo has provided a renewed boost on the path to an equal Swedish society.

    Abstract [sv]

The aim with this Essay is to examine the two most read magazines in Sweden covering the areas of exercising, fitness, bodybuilding, diets and “wellness” –Fitness and Body. Fitness’s target group is predominantly woman, while Body is almost exclusively read by men. The analysis is first done quantitatively, by systematically categorising the contents of the magazines. Then a qualitative analysis is made. Using two different theories, Anja Hirdman’s gender concept along with her constructivistic media perspective and the theory of Symbolic Interactionism, i try to answer the following questions; Does the two magazines term of address and language differ from one and other? And if that is the case, in what way? With point of departure from contents and subject areas, how are the two magazines compounded? How can the underlying message in the different articles be interpreted? The analysis shows that both magazines followed their purpose of writing about exercising in general, diet, fitness and bodybuilding. However, the magazine Fitness writes more often then Body about matters not following the given purpose, and the language in Body is more informative and general in comparison with the language used in Fitness. Still, the messages sent out by the different articles are in majority of the respects similar. Both magazines are portraying body ideals who can be understand as extreme. In Body the message feels fairly straight, “Build bigger muscles and burn more fat”, whereas Fitness willingly use the concept of “wellness” as a cover for what the message really is, namely “get your self a rock hard body through dieting and hard training”!

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine if a former drug user who has completed treatment andbeen drug-free for at least 15 years have experienced stigmatization and labeling. The mainpurpose of our study was to highlight the experiences of stigmatization, labeling and shame. If they have been labeled and stigmatized, we want to investigate whether they come fromclose relatives and/or society. Our interest in this area was to examine a former drug usersexperience, thoughts and feelings when it comes to labeling and stigmatization before, duringand after their addiction. In our report we used semi-structured interviews where we used aninterview guide. Our research was analyses based on a narrative analysis where material wascollected from the respondent’s life history. The results of the study indicate that all ourrespondents have experienced labeling, stigmatization and shame in relation to their drugaddiction. We studied what kind of method our respondents choose to handle theirexperiences of stigmatization, labeling and shame in relation to their addiction. All of ourrespondents stated that they used and still are using different strategies to hide their formerdrug addiction.

Barns delaktighet i SIP, samordnad individuell planering: En kvalitativ studie om socialsekreterares arbete med brukardelaktighet hos minderåriga brukare2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The relationship between social service officers and minors is full of power, partly through the Socialtjänstlag (2017:210) and Lag med särskilda bestämmelser av vård av unga (2017:135). Children, on the other hand, have the right to participation through the Children's convention, which the social security officers are obliged to follow. The purpose of our essay, is to investigate how social security officers in child and family units in the municipality work to increase children's participation in SIP meetings, and thereby reduce the power balance that exist between social workers and service users and make it more equal. The empirical material consists of six semi-structured qualitative interviews with social security officers.

Our theoretical application is based on Greta Marie Skua’s theory of power about the relationship between social security officers and the service users. With the aid of this, we analyse and demonstrates the power that exists between them. Then, we apply Norbert Elias and John L Scotson´s figuration theory about established and outsiders, on which we apply the concepts anomi, nomi, group charisma, contact contagion, established as well as outsiders to analyse the empirical material.

Social security officers have developed a method with the aim of streamlining its work while increasing user equity, but this seems to be problematic for some categories of users. Social security officers experience difficulties with participation for the service user in cases where the service users or their guardians have the need for an interpreter or the users or the parents have a disability. We find that children under the age of seven years are not included under the SIP meetings due to that the social security workers feel they are too young to participate in planning meetings for instance.

Individualisering och socialdemokratinspartiprogram: En undersökning av samhällsutvecklingens konsekvenser förkollektivt handlande2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The citizen is freer in a society that is perceived as open, but this leaves the individual to manage on the market by itself. When the liberation of the collective opens for the individuals to create their own welfare and the market thereby gaining greater influence in the individual's different lifeworld’s, we wonder if it can be seen in politics and, if so, how does the policy how does the policy respond to this development? We are looking for a comprehensive overall picture of modern sociology's view of individualization in order to use the driving forces and consumerism in a survey of how it is expressed in welfare policy. To see how individualization is expressed in welfare policy, we have used party platforms from Socialdemokraterna (the Social Democratic Party). Through the layout we have divided the work into two explanatory analysis parts, which we use to compile a result of the purpose of the work. The result clearly shows how the development towards individualization follows welfare policy developments, but since the policy has contributed to increased individualization, it will also focus on balancing the unfair social differences that become the consequences of an individualized society.

Arbetstillfredsställelse och sjukfrånvaro inom kommunal hemtjänst: En kvalitativ jämförande studie mellan kommuner med varierande hög sjukfrånvaro2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Hot och våld i socialarbetares yrkesutövning: Threats and violence in the socialwelfare secretary occupation.2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

2004, the SSR, Akademikerförbundet, made a study on the threats and violence as a social secretary in the municipal social services are exposed in their occupation of the "social secretary of threats and violence at work" (T-110192), conducted by Temo ab. We have chosen to use the study on a smaller scale and then made contact with five municipalities in the middle of Sweden to investigate social secretaries experiences of threats and violence. Using the cross-sectional design and a convenience sample, we have gained access to data from 56 people. From a sociological perspective, we have chosen to use Norbert Elias theory of universal configuration and interdependence, and Michel Foucault’s theories concerning power search explanation for the existence of threats and violent situations in the contact between social workers and their clients.

Rehabilitering ur ett arbetslivsinriktat perspektiv: Ett maktperspektiv med samhällsaktörerna i fokus2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The empirical basis of the study is three episodes of the series "Bathina's Different Worlds",which want to lift prejudices about class belongings among the people involved in theprogram series. The program leader travels around Sweden and visits different families tointerview them about their class affiliations. The public is asked if they have any prejudicesabout class affiliation. The study deals with the following social classes; the working class, the middle class and the upper class. The purpose of this study is to examine whether thereare prejudices about class affiliation and in such cases which. Furthermore, the aim of thestudy is to examine class identity among the families involved in the program series. Thestudy has a qualitative approach and is analyzed from Erving Goffman's theories using thehermeneutic interpretation theory. The study shows that there are prejudices for all threesocial classes, some prejudices can be confirmed in the program series and others not. Thefamilies of the working class and middle class identify themselves as working class andmiddle class; on the other hand, the family in the upper class felt a resistance to identifythemselves as upper class and considered to be "like everyone else".

Hur gör svenska fackförbund vid uppsägningar med anledning av arbetsbrist?: En kvalitativ studie2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Language reflects our worldview as well as shapes it. How is grass roots level attempts to introduce a gender neutral pronoun received in a society which reflects a gender dichotomy? The purpose of this study is to, inspired by Hirdman’s and Butler’s respective theories on gender, explore what attitudes users of a large Swedish internet community have towards the gender neutral pronoun hen. The current work was performed using an Internet-based survey which was completed by roughly 150 individuals. To analyze the closed ended questions of the survey we used SPSS, whereas the open ended questions were processed with the aid of a thematic method of analysis. The results indicate that the opinions concerning hen are largely polarized, with about as many respondents pro as against the usage of the word. Among those who are against using hen the majority perceive that creating a “genderless” society is the main purpose of the word, whereas most of the word’s intercessors think  that the purpose is to pose as a complement to the pronouns han and hon (he and she).  The study shows that there is a certain connection between the respondent’s attitude towards hen and his/her view on gender, which confirms our hypothesis that there is such a correlation.

Utanförskapets ”frustrerade ungdom”: Talet om de ”problematiska” förorterna i svensk kvällspress under augusti- september månad 20092009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

This quantitative survey aims to highlight the impact of the meeting with the grief for customer advisers and representatives of funeral homes connected to the SBF (Sveriges Begravningsbyråers förbund). It also aims to demonstrate any differences between the sexes on this subject. Issues include: How does the person experience expectations and requirements in relation to their professional role? Does the person experience a personal impact due to the encounter with grief and death in their profession, in what way and to what extent? What consequences does the expectations, reactions and the possible impact result in for that person? What conditions does the person have to help cope with the professional role? Is there a gender difference in this experience? The theory base, which consists of theories taken from The Managed Heart: The commercialization of Human Feeling by Arlie Hochschild (2003) and descriptions taken from Yrke: begravningsentreprenör. Om utanförskap, döda kroppar, riter och professionalisering by Anna Davidsson Bremborg (2002), has been fundamental in both the preparatory work and the analysis. The population consists of those with client contact at funeral homes connected to the SBF. The questionnaire was answered through an internet page and the contact with the particiants were made via e-mail. The questionnaire consisted of 44 claims which were answered by how well the respondents agreed with them. The responses were then coded and calculations were made of mean and significance of these figures. Comparisons were made on several levels between the different variables in order to find patterns and indications. The results showed trends that the respondents to some extent experienced high demands in their profession, stress connected with the customer interactions and that this to some extent resulted in negative consequences. The results suggests that respondents were expected to and strove to go the "extra mile" to please the customers. The results also showed trends that the respondents enjoyed their work, experienced relatively good conditions in their profession and that the benefits outweighed the sacrifices. The results also showed an interesting pattern of that women, more than men, experience pressures and stress due to the encouter with grief at work, and that the higher education the respondents had the greater the impact. This study resulted in some interesting indications that can be used in further research.

    Abstract [sv]

The purpose of this essay is using theories about labeling and social bonds to study whether a measure of rehabilitation for the psychically disabled contributes to a return to a normal status as not-labeled. Partly we examine whether the activities organized by the regulation-ruled authorities during the work of rehabilitation lead to shame or pride, and partly how these activities are organized regarding the processes that lead to the emotions pride or shame among the participants. Method: qualitative semi-structured face-to-face interviews with professional rehabilitation-actors at the Public Employment Office (PEO), the Social Insurance Office (SIO), the Social Service (SOS), the Psychiatry and the Division of Labour Market (AME). Conclusions: the Psychiatry clients are treated with respect, may participate, and communication is characterized by attunement, therefore strong social bonds can be built. On the contrary, among the other examined activities, we found many elements that arouse shame. Since these are more ruled by regulations, the result is engulfment and demands on conformity, because the compromise-possibilities are almost non-existent. Psychically disabled persons are met by prejudice, ignorance, disrespect and a non-solidarity-language. To get help, the individual has to accept a label in form of a diagnosis, and this labeling leads to a negative self-image. Furthermore the psychically disabled persons are falling between two chairs because of a weak cooperation between the rehabilitation-actors. Bimodal alienation and triangulation contributes to the difficulties in cooperation. Result: the social bonds are not strong enough to achieve a rehabilitation-effect. Even if the treatment from each administrator is important, we find the explanation-level primarily in laws, rules and government, because the structure rules the rehabilitation-measures, with shame as a consequence. Since we found elements of shame institutionalized in the way of working at PEO, SIO, SOS and AME, it means that social bonds can never reach a level good enough for achieving pride and normalization from a deviance or labeled identity.

Det här är min berättelse-: Kvalitativ undersökning om pappors upplevelser av separation och myndighetskontakt2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Varför ett avlönat arbete?: En kvalitativ studie om arbetsmotivation2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Studiens utgångspunkt grundas i tre olika variabler.
