Om människan och skräckfilm: En studie om hur människan känslomässigt påverkas av skräckfilm.2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Currently at Trafikverket acceptance testing is done without knowing the test process strengths and weaknesses. This case-study uses Test Maturity Model (TMM) to identify a maturity level for the test process in acceptance testing. The maturity level show how the current process operate and present the test process current weaknesses and strengths. Acceptance testing within ProjectWise reached a maturity level of three. The improvement proposals were to perform continuous workshops for education purposes, so the knowledge within the testing area does not stagnate, and to quantify quality factors for measurement of test.

Though no model is perfect this study will attempt to do a method analysis based on MA/SIMM, to show the strengths and weaknesses.

Some of the weaknesses are the lack of experience within the use of the criterias of the TMM model. The criterias are fulfilled by interviews and questionnaires and can be misinterpreted. The answers in the questionnaires are predefined and may confuse the respondent. These weaknesses may eventually cause the wrong maturity level being set.

There are well documented guidelines when the TMM process has begun so even a inexperienced student may perform a TMM evaluation. The greatest strength in TMM is that it has a scientific background, combined with 40 years of experience within the testing industry, makes it a well-founded model with trustworthy improvement proposals.

Störningsinformation i tågtrafiken: Attityder bland resenärer och tågbolag till störningsinformation och tjänster för sådan information2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

When booking a trip along the railway through several train operators it is not uncommon

that information about possible disruptions along the railway (that can change or cancel

the booked trip) are not relayed to the passengers. Today, research on rail traffic in

Sweden is limited. It is unclear how satisfied customers are with the quality of the

information they receive during their trip (if they get it at all), including with respect to

disruptions. Our partners have identified what they believe is a need among train

operators, which is a service for disruption information to travelers. In addition to

confirming that there is a need for such a service, we have an interest to investigate how

such a service might look like and what the users want. Our research has shown that

passengers are not satisfied with either the amount of information about disturbances or

how often they get it. Along with KnowitBorlänge, we have come up with a proposed

solution that uses already existing technologies to create a portal for an efficient way to

get the interference information to travelers.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Mask och identitet i närbild: En analys av närbilderna i Ingmar Bergmans film Sommarlek2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

How does the use of different road networks effect the optimal location of facilities in rural areas?2012Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The p-median problem is often used to locate P service facilities in a geographically distributed population. Important for the performance of such a model is the distance measure.

Distance measure can vary if the accuracy of the road network varies. The rst aim in this study is to analyze how the optimal location solutions vary, using the p-median model, when the road network is alternated. It is hard to nd an exact optimal solution for p-median problems. Therefore, in this study two heuristic solutions are applied, simulating annealing and a classic heuristic. The secondary aim is to compare the optimal location solutions using dierent algorithms for large p-median problem. The investigation is conducted by the means of a case study in a rural region with an asymmetrically distributed population, Dalecarlia.

The study shows that the use of more accurate road networks gives better solutions for optimal location, regardless what algorithm that is used and regardless how many service facilities that is optimized for. It is also shown that the simulated annealing algorithm not just is much faster than the classic heuristic used here, but also in most cases gives better location solutions.

Build it and they will come?: Inhibiting factors for reuse of open content in developing countries2009In: Electronic Journal of Information Systems in Developing Countries, ISSN 1681-4835, E-ISSN 1681-4835, Vol. 37, no 5, p. 1-16Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Open content has the potential to change the playing field when it comes to every individual’s right to education. Development of new course content is both expensive and time consuming and open content can help educational organizations to deal with these problems by offering free-to-use educational resources. Despite the benefits of open content the usage is very low in developing countries and understanding why content developers choose not to use open content is the first step towards finding a solution to the problem. Which inhibiting factors for reuse do content developers in developing countries experience with open content? To answer the question interviews, questionnaires and observations have been made with content developers from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and from UNESCO Open Training Platform. Findings show that many of the inhibiting factors with reuse of open content do not necessarily relate to the actual content. Educational rules and regulations, lack of infrastructure, teaching practices and traditions etc. are major obstacles that need to be overcome if the usage of open content should increase.

Capability outcomes from educational and ICT capability inputs: an analysis of ICT use in informal education in KenyaManuscript (preprint) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In the field of Information and Communication Technologies for Development (ICT4D) ICT use in education is well studied. Education is often seen as a pre-‐requisite for development and ICTs are believed to aid in education, e.g. to make it more accessible and to increase its quality. In this paper we study the access and use of ICT in a study circle (SC) education program in the south coast of Kenya. The study is qualitative reporting results based on interviews and observations with SC participants, government officers and SC coordinators and teachers. The study builds on the capability approach perspective of development where individuals’ opportunities and ability to live a life that they value are focused. The aim of the study is to investigate the capability outcomes enabled through the capability inputs access and use of ICT in education as well as the factors that enabled and/or restricted the outcomes. Findings show that many opportunities have been enabled such as an increase in the ability to generate an income, learning benefits, community development and basic human development (e.g. literacy and self-‐confidence). However, conversion factors such as a poorly developed infrastructure and poor IT literacy prevent many of the individuals from taking full advantage of the ICT and the opportunities it enables.

SCORM from the perspective of the course designer: a critical review2007Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The introduction of e-Learning opens new possibilities and new ways of delivering courses. Learning objects can be used and reused in educational contexts to educate students, employees, administrative officers and citizens. In later years Sharable Content Object Reference Model (SCORM) developed by Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) has more or less become a de-facto standard for creating learning materials that can be used in different learning management systems (LMS).There are many scientific papers that deal with the benefits of e-Learning from a learner’s perspective, or from a strictly economical point of view. In this paper we critically evaluate which benefits and drawbacks a course designer in a university setting can have from using the SCORM standard to deliver a course to the students. We use scenarios to test what benefits and drawbacks can be observed by setting up a course on an LMS with and without the use of the SCORM specification. Our findings show that for a course designer, advantages with SCORM are possibility of reuse, use of metadata and possibility to sequence the learning path of the learner. The most important drawback for a course designer is the lack of flexibility when using SCORM. Another major drawback is structure rigidity. In order to fully be able to use the potential of SCORM the course design and content should not be changed after the course is started. This might have negative impact on the possibilities to design a university course if the field of study is volatile, like many ICT-related topics are.

Open content use in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka: context flexibility as an enabler for reuse2009In: Workshop proceedings: 2nd Annual SIG GlobDev Workshop, 2009, p. Paper 11-Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Free-to-use learning material, open content (OC), is ascribed the potential to change the playingfield in regards to every individual’s right to education. OC is, however, not much used indeveloping countries. The aim of this paper is to study how actors involved in contentdevelopment affect reuse of OC. Actor-Network Theory (ANT) concepts are used to describecontent development processes in two cases (in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka). Findings show thatthere are content properties that need to be flexible and adaptable for it to be used. The propertiesmust not only fit with students and content developers, it must also be adaptable to fit with theeducational organization and the technologies used for dissemination. Since there are manyactors and properties that must be aligned it is unlikely that fully context independent OC can bedeveloped. For OC to play a role for development the focus has to be on developing flexiblecontent that easily can be adapted to different contexts.

Development, capabilities and technology: an evaluative framework2011In: Proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Social Implications of Computers in Developing Countries: Partners  for  Development  -  ICT  Actors  and  Actions, 2011Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper we present a framework to be used for evaluation of Information and Communication Technology for Development (ICT4D) projects. The framework is based on Sen´s notion of development as freedom where human capabilities and functionings are seen as key aspects to development. Sen´s capability approach presents an alternative way of seeing and evaluating development (alternative to more traditional ways of measuring development). The approach is based on expanding freedoms, or eliminating unfreedoms, for people so that they can live a life that they have reason to value. Even though Sen is referenced a lot in ICT4D literature the analysis rarely goes further then stating that Sen presents an alternative to traditional ways of development. Reasons can be that the capability approach does not specifically mention technology, in addition to the lack of guidelines presented by Sen on how to use the framework. The aim of this paper is to operationalize the evaluation process and to include a clear role for technology in Sen´s capability framework. The framework is validated with a case on distance education from Bangladesh.

The capability approach as a tool for development evaluation: analyzing students' use of internet resources2012In: Information Technology for Development, ISSN 0268-1102, E-ISSN 1554-0170, Vol. 18, no 1, p. 23-41Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Internet resources have been ascribed transformative powers in the development of educational organizations and students in developing regions. However, most development projects relating to Internet resources focus on publishing material without much analysis of the actual use. The question then is how we can go deeper in our analysis and study actual development outcomes. The analysis in this paper is based on Amartya Sen’s Capability Approach where both the means and ends are evaluated. The research question is “What are the benefits of using Amartya Sen’s Capability Approach when evaluating development outcomes?”. We answer the question by evaluating what capabilities and functionings Internet resources can enable for students in higher education. Findings show that the Capability Approach enables us to gain a deeper understanding of why and how development outcomes are achieved. We are also able to follow the development process from the intervention to the realized outcomes.

IT-Forensisk undersökning av flyktigt minne: På Linux och Android enheter2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The ability to be able to make a efficient investigation of volatile memory is something that getsmore and more important in IT forensic investigations. Partially for Linux and Windows based PCsystems but also for mobile devices in the form of the Android or devices based on other mobileoperative systems.Android uses a modified Linux kernel where the modifications exclusively are to adapt it to thedemands that exists in a operative system targeting mobile devices. These modifications containsmessage passing systems between processes as well as changes to the memory subsystems in theaspect of handling and monitoring.Since these two kernels are so closely related it is possible to use the same basic principles for dum-ping and analysing of the memory. The actual memory dumping is done by a kernel module whichin this report is done by the software called LiME which handles both kernels very well.Tools used to analyse the memory needs to understand the memory layout used on the systemin question, depending on the type of analyse method used it might also need information aboutthe different symbols involved. The tool used in this project is called Volatility which in theory iscapable of extracting all the information needed in order to make a correct investigation. The purpose was to expand on existing methods for analysing volatile memory on Linux-basedsystems, in the form of PC machines as well as embedded systems like Android. Difficulties arisedwhen the analysing of volatile memory for Android could not be completed according to existinggoals. The final result came to show that memory analysis targeting the PC platform is bothsimpler and more straight forward then what it is if Android is involved.

Kan applikationer med kartkomponenter konstrueras enligt designmönstret Model-View-Viewmodel?: En fallstudie i vilka problem som uppstår vid implementering av kartkomponenter i applikationer som bygger på tekniken Windows Presentation Foundation och designmönstret Model-View-Viewmodel2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In object-oriented programming, established approaches are often used in order to solve problems. One such approach is the Model-View-ViewModel (MVVM) design pattern, which is used to separate the graphical user interface from the underlying logic of an application. It is commonly used in applications based on the technology Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF).

In applications where map components are used (software components that display maps to the user) it may be difficult to apply the MVVM design pattern, depending on how the map component is constructed.

In this study, three map components are tested in order to evaluate if problems arise in the implementation of these map components in an application based on the technology WPF and the MVVM design pattern. In cases where problems arise, the necessary changes required to solve the problem are also described.

The tested map components are TatukGIS, SharpMap and MapSUI. The results of the testing show that none of the map components have a built-in ability to create data bindings between the view and the viewmodel, which is required in order to comply with MVVM. For all map components a possible solution to the problem is implemented and discussed.

Jämförelse av NoSQL-databas och SQL-baserad relationsdatabas: En förklarande studie för när NoSQL kan vara att föredra framför en relationsdatabas2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

With the explosive development of the mobile world, web applications and Big Data, new requirements for storage capacity and speed of database systems have arisen. The traditional relational database that has long dominated the marked has received competition because of its lack in speed and scalability. NoSQL is a collective name for databases that are not based on the traditional relational model. NoSQL databases are designed to easily expand their storage capacity while delivering high performance. NoSQL databases have been around for decades but the need for them is relatively new. Our partner expressed a desire to know what differences exist between NoSQL and the traditional relational database. To clarify these differences, we have answered the following questions in this work:  When can a NoSQL database be preferred to a relational database?  What are the differences in database performance? In order to answer these questions, a literature study has been conducted together with experiments where we test which performance differences exist between the selected databases. Performance tests have been performed with the benchmarking tool Yahoo Cloud Serving Benchmark, to verify or falsify the enhanced performance of the NoSQL databases. The hypotheses were falsified in both NoSQL databases. The results showed that the relational database performed better than the cloud based NoSQL databases, but also that the relational database performance deteriorates when the load increased. The results of the experiments are combined with the literature study and together answer our questions. The conclusion is that no database performs better than another one, it is the requirements of the data to be stored. From these requirements, analyses can be made to draw conclusions about what kind of database is preferable.

Musiken uppfinner framtiden: En undersökning av problemaktivering i den kreativa processens skapandefas hos musikskapare2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In recent years, the market for mobile devices has increased and technological developments haveadvanced in a rapid pace. More and more communication is done through mobile and handhelddevices. Therefore, even the seizures increase by these devices, because there is often very valuableforensic information stored on them. The purpose of this work is based on a method combining aqualitative and a quantitative study examining forensic tools and techniques for handheld devices. The paper analyzed forensics description of chip-off technology and its implementation, as well asCellebrites different extraction methods are tested to see what information that is possible to extractwith each method. To seek answers, literature studies, own investigations and semi-structured interviews have beenconducted. The report is divided into different sections, where the current operating systemsAndroid and iOS, Cellebrites tools and chip-off technique are described, own investigations made, the interviews carried out and the results thereof. The results show that the type of information thatis possible to obtain, differs depending on the extraction method. Chip-off technology allows a fullphysical extraction on handheld devices that can be locked and broken, but requires some training, experience and specialized equipment.

    Abstract [en]

Every day thousands of invoices are handled in Swedish organizations, but not everyone has the option or ability to use mobile devices for this purpose. The need exists, but the area is unexplored. This work has been carried out with the purpose of developing guidelines for how a useful and effective mobile application for certifying invoices should be designed that is both easy-to-use and at the same time provides the basis a user needs to be able to make the right decision when certifying an invoice. During the work, Design and creation has been used as a research method and Prototyping as a development method. Through interviews with users of a billing system, a first number of guidelines were developed. These guidelines were used to create three different prototypes that focused on meeting different parts of the guidelines. The prototypes were subjected to usability testing, where the test subjects then talked openly during unstructured interviews what they liked about the prototypes and what problems they experienced. The data collected through these tests and interviews could then be used to create a revised and final list of guidelines. Using the final guidelines, a fourth prototype could be developed.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to design an advertising campaign to get more

girls to start playing ice hockey. The study investigated how an advertising

campaign could be designed and what channels it should be marketed in to

    reach girls aged 12–20 years.

A survey was conducted to understand what ice hockey players thought about

ice hockey. The result of the survey was the basis for the campaign idea. A

research on the target group and a visual content analysis was performed to get

knowledge of which campaign units and design elements that could be used in

designing the campaign. The advertising campaign was made after Sless’ model

    measuring information design.

The result of the study was a step-by-step process in the creation of an

advertising campaign. The study also resulted in a complete advertising

campaign to recruit more girls to play ice hockey in Falun. The respondents’

answers showed that the campaign material largely suited to attract girls to start

    playing ice hockey.

    Abstract [sv]

    kunde urskilja signalerna trots behandling.

eNOSHA - the design and development of a learning object repository2010In: The International Journal on Advances in ICT for Emerging Regions, ISSN 1800-4156, Vol. 3, no 1Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper describes the development of an open source Learning Object Repository (LOR), named eNOSHA (eLearning Neutral Object Storage with a Holistic Approach.), at University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC), Sri Lanka. The e-Learning Centre (eLC) at UCSC has been developing learning content for a nationwide e-Learning Bachelor of Information Technology degree (eBIT) and a preparatory programme for the eBIT program (The Foundation in Information Technology, FIT). Since eBIT started in 2002, a lot of learning content has been developed in-house and there was a need for a repository to support storing and reusing of learning content. The aim of the paper is to present the development of eNOSHA in regards to three key concepts, flexibility, reusability and user-friendliness. Based on a requirement analysis carried out in December 2008, a plan was drafted for the development and implementation of the system. A participatory approach was used where users have been involved in the design, evaluation and implementation. Based on the testing of the system we gained a positive response regarding the searchability and reuse of content. Tests have, however, shown that additional features are needed to be implemented to improve the usability of the system, Even though the system has been developed based on the needs of UCSC, one of the objectives has always been to make it context independent. Internal tests conclude that the system is flexible enough to work in different contexts but the design may need some minor changes once tested in other organizations or cultures.

    Abstract [en]

Human factors influence how people interact and communicate with each other. Agile system development work consists of relationships, interaction and cooperation between people. These aspects impact the system development project´s results. However, often in system development there is more focus on the technology itself than on the social aspects, where human factors appear to be a decisive factor, in many cases for the project's end result.

The purpose of this study is to describe what human factors that can lead to more efficient cooperation in agile software development projects, and to describe how agile system development looks like at Trafikverket.

Trafikverket wished this study to be implemented as the study’s results may help to reduce the number of less successful systems development projects at Trafikverket.

The main research question in this work is: What human factors are important to make cooperation between customers and developers of agile software development projects more efficient?

A case study was conducted at Trafikverket. Data collected from seven semi-structured interviews followed up by questionnaires and document studies was used for the analysis. Conclusion’s suggests that in order to make cooperation between customers and developers in agile system development projects at Trafikverket more efficient five human factors as communication, trust , leadership, knowledge and motivation should be focused.

Säker hantering av mobila enheter i organisationers IT-miljö2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    strategier.

    Abstract [sv]

”If we are going to talk about the bearded men. What is it, two/three years? Everyone is brewing

their own beer and has a beard, so you can say trends are present, all the time. It is good to trust

your gut, I would not do something just because it is a trend, because no one will know when that

trend might end” Annika Hellström tells me during her interview for this essay.1

The purpose of this essay is to investigate and gain deeper insight in what it is like to be a female

producer in Sweden. To get an answer to this question I have interviewed four Swedish female

producers whilst also looking for answers in literature. Several subjects have been discussed to get

find an answer to this, rather large, question. The essay discusses what is popular i Swedish film

and television right now. It also contains a job description of what a producer does, and includes a

    gender perspective.

The conclusion that I have reached from this is that you can see a whole lot of different

developments in what is currently popular in Swedish film and tv. Something that you can clearly

see, is that there has been a great development in equality in the film industry in Sweden. We can

also see that the work tasks are relatively alike whether you are a producer working in fiction or

documentary. Also that all four of our interviewees are rather pragmatic and that they all think that

it is important to listen to the rest of the team and take in what they have to say.

    Abstract [en]

Gathering and storing of data has grown exponentially the last two decades and today, personal information is to a much greater extent available to the public. Concerning the technical development in today’s society, EU has decided that the national interpretations of EU: s data retention directive is to be replaced by a mutual directive called the general data protection regulation (GDPR).

This is a case study in which we’ve studied what qualifications and obstacles organizations possess in order to meet the new law and what challenges GDPR will bring. Through interviews in both the private and public sector we’ve concluded that there are a number of qualifications needed to meet GDPR. Among them, good cooperation between employees and management and encouragement to participation within the organizations. However, it is hard to estimate exactly what qualifications will be necessary to meet the new law before it’s implemented in May of 2018.

We also concluded that the challenges with the new law will be many and will implicate more responsibility and work. More responsibility will be required when it comes to storing and localizing personal information, and to compile new routines and ways to work in order to anchor the new law within the organizations.

    Abstract [en]

Digital guides are something that starts to appear more and more these days. Several digital

guides have already been tried with mixed results. One version was developed for

“världsarvet Falun” where a PDA was inserted into a box with speakers and a GPS and short

videos gives information about certain locations in Falun. Another guide was developed for

the IPhone in which static maps were displayed with information rendered by a server. This

thesis tries to develop a server side solution for an application designed to give users a tour of

selected so called areas of interest (aoi). The server only provides coordinates and information

about aois and the specific points within. The solution uses a server with a database to store

and provide information about these areas. The first prototype for the solution uses https to

communicate with the application and SQL PDO queries to communicate with the database.

Future work with this solution could be to upgrade the server to facilitate a larger scalability

    for the solution.

Skillnad på dist och dist?: Symmetrisk respektive asymmetrisk klippnings påverkan påintermodulationsdistorsion och lyssnarens upplevelse2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

skillnaderna.

    Abstract [en]

Why did Bangladesh number one in the current e-government ranking among the least developed countries (LDCs), while stood 23rd in knowledge management ranking? Efficient ways of sharing and managing knowledge is imperative for the effectiveness of e-government initiatives in any country. E-government and knowledge management should not appear individually. This paper is based on an interpretative research approach that discusses the theoretical and practical aspects of knowledge management and e-government initiatives in the context of developing countries. For the purpose of analysis, online research papers and reports were investigated and Bangladesh was considered as a country for explaining the context of developing countries. The case for Bangladesh shows that while the government can easily present online a number of its services, these may not be effective for the targeted users as those services are failed to address some critical implementation factors. Furthermore, the critical factors for e-government imitative that can be known by the policy makers adequately if they are participated in the knowledge sharing process efficiently with appropriate approaches and technologies.

    Abstract [sv]

Data har samlats in via gruppintervju.

The purpose of this study was to investigate if animation can be used to influence a user’s trust in a website in situations where trust is of great importance, such as registration of subscription service or social media. The purpose is also to find out which type of animations that gives a trustworthy impression. Literature studies, visual content analysis and questionnaire survey have been used to carry out the survey. The result showed that animations can be used to increase a user's trust in a website. It also showed which animations can be used to increase trust. The results show that websites should contain some form of animation to increase trust, the user wants to receive feedback when interacting with the site. The feedback should be given as quickly as possible and with some kind of duration. The animations should increase the contrast of the element to its surroundings, no matter what kind of animation it is. However, the contrast should not be too obvious.

Under arbetet

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Layout och typografi i vetenskapliga artiklar: En kartläggning av konventioner gällande grafisk formgivning inom matematik, medicin och utbildningsvetenskap2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

A descriptive visual content analysis was conducted on research articles from 30 academic journals with highest impact factor equally distributed between Mathematics, Medicine and Education research, to examine whether a correlation could be established between academic discipline and graphic design conventions used. The survey included layout aspects (e.g. size of pages and margins, text columns, use of graphic elements, placement of tables, visuals and page numbers) and typographical appearance of title, sub-headings, body copy and abstract (e.g. character height, weight, alignment, typeface, use of colour and inter-line distance).

The results show that the disciplines used different but also shared some common graphic design conventions. In Mathematics often a single-column layout was used, with a small typographic variation, using a single Transitional or Transitional/Didone typeface for the entire document, not using any colour and seldom using any graphical elements. Medicine showed greater variation, using colour, non-centered typography combing sans-serif and serif typefaces, graphical elements and frames emphasising the often used double-column grid system. Education research shared appearance common for both disciplines, leaning mostly towards Mathematics.

This thesis is in its entirety written in Swedish and is typeset partially in accordance with the findings from this survey. Code book is included.

Utbildningens påverkan på människors acceptans för ett kommunikationssystem2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this study, conducted in Landstinget Dalarna, the communication system Microsoft Lync has been studied. Lync consist of chat, video and telephone conferencing and document sharing. The purpose of this study is to explain how education can affect people’s acceptance of a communication system and what causes that may be because it is not used. In order to answer the study's purpose, a quasi-experiment was used conducted by two interview rounds and training for the users between these interview rounds. Based on interviews conclusions on how the training had influenced user acceptance for communication system Lync could be drawn. The model Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) was used to study the various factors that influence user acceptance of the technology. The conclusion should answer questions about how education affect people's acceptance and what could be the reasons that a communication system like Lync is not used. After the training, some impact of user acceptance occurred on the communication module chat, the user’s approach had been changed and the respondents saw an increase in benefits after training. The training had no effect when respondents did not see any benefit.

A data driven approach for automating vehicle activated signs2016Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Vehicle activated signs (VAS) display a warning message when drivers exceed a particular threshold. VAS are often installed on local roads to display a warning message depending on the speed of the approaching vehicles. VAS are usually powered by electricity; however, battery and solar powered VAS are also commonplace. This thesis investigated devel-opment of an automatic trigger speed of vehicle activated signs in order to influence driver behaviour, the effect of which has been measured in terms of reduced mean speed and low standard deviation. A comprehen-sive understanding of the effectiveness of the trigger speed of the VAS on driver behaviour was established by systematically collecting data. Specif-ically, data on time of day, speed, length and direction of the vehicle have been collected for the purpose, using Doppler radar installed at the road. A data driven calibration method for the radar used in the experiment has also been developed and evaluated.

Results indicate that trigger speed of the VAS had variable effect on driv-ers’ speed at different sites and at different times of the day. It is evident that the optimal trigger speed should be set near the 85th percentile speed, to be able to lower the standard deviation. In the case of battery and solar powered VAS, trigger speeds between the 50th and 85th per-centile offered the best compromise between safety and power consump-tion. Results also indicate that different classes of vehicles report differ-ences in mean speed and standard deviation; on a highway, the mean speed of cars differs slightly from the mean speed of trucks, whereas a significant difference was observed between the classes of vehicles on lo-cal roads. A differential trigger speed was therefore investigated for the sake of completion. A data driven approach using Random forest was found to be appropriate in predicting trigger speeds respective to types of vehicles and traffic conditions. The fact that the predicted trigger speed was found to be consistently around the 85th percentile speed justifies the choice of the automatic model.

The Optimal trigger speed of vehicle activated signs2014Licentiate thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The thesis aims to elaborate on the optimum trigger speed for Vehicle Activated Signs (VAS) and to study the effectiveness of VAS trigger speed on drivers’ behaviour. Vehicle activated signs (VAS) are speed warning signs that are activated by individual vehicle when the driver exceeds a speed threshold. The threshold, which triggers the VAS, is commonly based on a driver speed, and accordingly, is called a trigger speed. At present, the trigger speed activating the VAS is usually set to a constant value and does not consider the fact that an optimal trigger speed might exist. The optimal trigger speed significantly impacts driver behaviour.

In order to be able to fulfil the aims of this thesis, systematic vehicle speed data were collected from field experiments that utilized Doppler radar. Further calibration methods for the radar used in the experiment have been developed and evaluated to provide accurate data for the experiment. The calibration method was bidirectional; consisting of data cleaning and data reconstruction. The data cleaning calibration had a superior performance than the calibration based on the reconstructed data.

To study the effectiveness of trigger speed on driver behaviour, the collected data were analysed by both descriptive and inferential statistics. Both descriptive and inferential statistics showed that the change in trigger speed had an effect on vehicle mean speed and on vehicle standard deviation of the mean speed. When the trigger speed was set near the speed limit, the standard deviation was high. Therefore, the choice of trigger speed cannot be based solely on the speed limit at the proposed VAS location.

The optimal trigger speeds for VAS were not considered in previous studies. As well, the relationship between the trigger value and its consequences under different conditions were not clearly stated. The finding from this thesis is that the optimal trigger speed should be primarily based on lowering the standard deviation rather than lowering the mean speed of vehicles. Furthermore, the optimal trigger speed should be set near the 85th percentile speed, with the goal of lowering the standard deviation.

Triggering Radar Speed Warning signs using Association Rules and Clustering Techniques2012Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Radar speed warning signs (RSWS) have been used in recent years across Sweden and elsewhere in the world. Such signs measure vehicle speed using radar and are designed to display a message when the driver exceeds a pre-set threshold speed, which is often relative to the speed limit on a particular road segment. RSWS are typically placed on locations which are perceived to be problematic by relevant authorities. Excessive speeding or road accidents are examples of such perceived problems.  Deploying RSWS in many relevant locations is often impractical due to the lack of necessary power supply needed for operation. Battery driven RSWS are an alternative but are less attractive because of limited running time and frequent maintenance (changing batteries etc). Therefore, solar powered RSWS are more desirable. However, these signs are also dependent on batteries that need to be charged. The duration of operation of solar powered RSWS largely depend on how often the sign is triggered. Constant activation of the sign drains the battery. It is desirable to trigger the sign only when necessary. Hence, the main goal of this research is to design a model that optimises the performance of RSWS depending on prevailing conditions i.e traffic flows during different times of the day and so on.  Vehicle speed data had been collected at a test site in Sweden all hours of the day. This paper attempts to use a hybrid system based on Apriori and K-means clustering algorithm. Apriori algorithm is simple and efficient to determine associations’ rules among attributes in particular to discover the most common combination that can occur within the data set.  K-means clustering is basically used to quantize the input variables into smaller clusters that can easily derive the trigger threshold value. The proposed hybrid system indicated that the system was able to trigger solar RWWS efficiently.
