    Abstract [en]

Towards a critique of the "qualitative method"

This article is based on a plenary speech (Sw. Sociological Association) in which several critical remarks were directed against the frequent and popular use of ’qualitative methods’ in contemporary sociology. The various types of remarks were: (1) Is the qualitative method anti-positivistic (2) Does it draw upon a different form of rationality than the quantitative method (3) Is the qualitative method more suitable for women than for men, and finally (4) Is the qualitative method ”deconstructivist” and/or ”postmodern”? The article ends with a critical discussion of which the possible consequences may be for the sociological discipline as such, when the qualitative method (or for that matter, women) come to dominate.

Diskurser i platsannonser: Diskursanalys av platsannonser ur ett genusperspektiv2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Disabled older people’s use of health and social care services and their unmet care needs in six European countries2013In: European Journal of Public Health, ISSN 1101-1262, E-ISSN 1464-360X, Vol. 23, no 6, p. 1032-1038Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: The national health and social care systems in Europe remain poorly integrated with regard to the care needs of older persons. The present study examined the range of health and social care services used by older people and their unmet care needs, across six European countries.

Methods: Family carers of older people were recruited in six countries via a standard protocol. Those providing care for disabled older people (n = 2629) provided data on the older person’s service use over a 6-month period, and their current unmet care needs. An inventory of 21 services common to all six countries was developed. Analyses considered the relationship between older people’s service use and unmet care needs across countries.

Results: Older people in Greece, Italy and Poland used mostly health-oriented services, used fewer services overall and also demonstrated a higher level of unmet care needs when compared with the other countries. Older people in the United Kingdom, Germany and Sweden used a more balanced profile of socio-medical services. A negative relationship was found between the number of different services used and the number of different areas of unmet care needs across countries.

Conclusions: Unmet care needs in older people are particularly high in European countries where social service use is low, and where there is a lack of balance in the use of health and social care services. An expansion of social care services in these countries might be the most effective strategy for reducing unmet needs in disabled older people.

New opportunities for social stratification research in Sweden: International occupational classifications and stratification measures over time

The Swedish occupational classifications have in recent years been changed to a version of the international standard ISCO-88(COM), i.e. SSYK 96. As a consequence, a wide variety of internationally well-known stratification measures can be applied to Swedish data sets. In this article some tests of the validity of translation keys between the older national classifications and SSYK 96 are presented. The keys seem to work satisfactorily. Thus, it is possible to create long time-series with ISCO/SSYK and use these well-known stratification measures over time. Hence, the international interest in Swedish data sets, and empirical results based on these data sets, could rise. Moreover, in the article an empirical regularity, which is quite astonishing, is paid attention to; stratification measures based on different theoretical rationales indicate very similar hierarchies of occupations.

What everyone should be able to afford. An analysis of w hat kinds of consumptionare regarded as necessary in contemporary Sweden

Some degree of consensus concerning perceptions of consumption is important to create and refine social policy as well as measures of poverty. Possible reasons for both consensus and certain social cleavages about what is perceived as necessities are discussed. Analysing data from Statistics Sweden’s 1998 Survey of Living Conditions, the following conclusions are drawn. There are 12 items for which there is a fairly high level of consensus. This indicates the possibility of calculating both a generally accepted level for supplementary benefits and an accepted measure of poverty/living standards. However, there are also cleavages. The most interesting, and even surprising, ones show a more restricted view on necessities among groups that are relatively economically advantaged, i.e. well-educated and ‘higher’ social classes. Moreover, there are sex differences and expected political differences - ‘neoliberals’ have a somewhat more restricted view.

Changing forms of intimacy among older people in late modern society

The purpose of this paper is to draw attention to a neglected reality in Swedish social research: New romantic relationships in later life. Our theoretical points of departure are the transformation of intimacy and the transition from a culture of marriage to a culture of divorce. We ask if the transformation of intimacy has reached later life and investigate late life divorce, attitudes to and choice of union form in late life heterosexual relationships, relationship history and the importance of a relationship for life satisfaction. The results, which are based both on demographic data and a survey to 60–90 year old Swedes (n=1225), show that changing relationship patterns in late modern Sweden have reached older people. In romantic relationships initiated in later life LAT is the preferred union form, followed by cohabitation, while marriage is a rare choice. In some respects this makes older people an avant-garde in the investigation of alternative union forms. The results also show the importance of romantic relationships for life satisfaction in later life – independent of union form. Finally we criticize Swedish census data, which is based on civil status, for giving a somewhat distorted image of older people’s family and romantic lives.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to investigate foreign-born outside Europe with a foreign academic degree, their experience of meetings and entry into the Swedish labor market. The method we used to achieve the purpose is a qualitative method in the form of semi structured interviews. The analysis method for the study is thematic analysis where common themes were found and discussed based on the theories and previous research results. The purpose of the study has been answered in the result section according to the following theme: Education- obstacles and opportunities, ethnic discrimination and integration in the labor market. In conclusion, the study results clearly show how important it is to highlight the obstacles and opportunities that characterize this academic group in the labor market. The key factors behind an effective establishment according to our result section are better acceptance of foreign academic degree from employers, less waiting time for validation of education, more experience from Swedish labor market and various contacts and networks.

    Abstract [en]

In Sweden, absence from work related to mental health issues rose with 129 % between

2011 and 2017. Dalarna county reported the highest increase. The majority of absence was

that of women, specifically women working within the public sector. The aim of the study

was to describe heads of departments experiences of which factors may prevent or shorten

absence of work related to mental health issues among personnel within social service. A

qualitative study with semistructured interviews was completed. The empirical data was

analysed using a thematic analysis method and then related to pre-existing studies and the

    theoretical perspectives gender and SOC.

Bachelors of social work often hold leading positions within the public sector.

Studies concerning factors of importance for preventing mental health issues and factors of

importance for easing a return to work are viewed as a necessity. The conclusion of our

study shows the importance of a open work climate, participation, early efforts, distinct

leadership, and a need of further education concerning mental health.

    Abstract [en]

Children growing up with substance abusing parents are a hidden problem for society and they often grow up without any help from the community. The overall aim of the study is to explore how adult children of substance-abusing parents have been influenced by their upbringing. We intend to gain a deeper understanding to see if self-image / self-esteem has changed, if a sense of coherence has appeared and what defines upbring from childhood to adulthood. The analysis process is hermeneutic and we have collected the empirical data from interviews and analysed it against our sociological theory and previous research. The sociological theory we have chosen is Aaron Antonovsky's salutogenic model. Our results indicates that children who grow up with substance abusing parents are in great need of a caretaker to feel a sense of context in order to develop into well functioning adult individuals. The study shows that adult children who have grown up with substance abusing parents have had a considerable lack of affirmation and to be seen, but they've got these needs satisfied by a caretaker as well as leisure activities. The respondents' childhood was characterized by instability and unpredictability wich has made them lack a safe home environment. The common factor for our respondents is that everyone has an inner drive that has pushed them to survive despite difficult life events.

    Abstract [en]

The family between market and state. A question of gender, class an power

With reference to the far-reaching social and economic changes from a global perspective, the focus of the political discussions is now laid on the conditions of family life. The family is a third sphere between the market and the state. As such, it cannot be analysed independently of changes on the labour market and in the political economy. In this article, the thesis is advanced that the family policies must be analysed with reference to class and gender. The way in which changes in the composition of classes affect the current political process in Sweden is problematised. The significance of analysing the class relation of the service society from a gender perspective is particularly stressed. Sweden is currently a gender segregated class society. The higher classes are male dominated, and the lower classes are female dominated. A gender-based ’class struggle’ has emerged within strata. The solidarity within and between strata is weakened, since the struggle is also a gender struggle, and men tend to emphasise their higher status against women, not to equalise it. The bill about care allowance is critically scrutinised from class political and gender political perspectives. While presented as an issue of equality between family forms, it is argued, in this article, that its purpose is to strengthen a traditional family form in the working class.

Family policies in the EC-countries from a female perspective

The purpose of this article is to problematize the family policies in the EC-countries from a female perspective. The article emphasizes the family policies as motherhood policies in the twelve EC-countries. In my examples, I have focussed particularly on the phase of childbirth and the care for small children in the family cycle. My interest is to analyze the implication of the family policies for women’s life chances, integrity and autonomy. In the article, an overview of the rules that afflict mothers’ possibilities to be employed and attain autonomy is presented. A majority of the EC-countries have introduced separate taxation between spouses with the motivation to stimulate women’s employment. Many rights concerning possibilites to conciliate employment and family have been introduced in the EC-countries during the late 1980’s and the early 1990’s. The rule systems are difficult to grasp and appear to work in the opposite direction in their consequences, which renders comparisons between the countries more difficult. Many questions can be asked concerning the joint effects of the taxation system, allowance regulations and rights concerning possibilities to conciliate employment and family for women in different social strata respectively, and detailed studies of how the rule systems work for these women in different social strata are required. A general conclusion is that mothers are nowadays granted the right to employment and the right to keep it when they have children. Men have almost in all EC-countries received extended possibilities to take leave in connection to their becoming fathers. Simultaneously, married/cohabitant women’s economic dependence on men is asserted/reinforced by tax-systems, allowance regulations and shortages of child care. I also stress the need to study rules within the different social security systems in detail. This becomes particularly relevant when one studies women, since social security systems are based on paid work. Since women have salaried work on odder premises, they run the risk of not qualifying for support or not being insured at all. In the article, I argue the family policies shall be directed more particularly towards theproblems of the women and the children in the families. The gender-neutral perspective that in most cases is pre-dominant is in fact a male perspective. It is chiefly mothers who put the most effort and time into families. It is mothers that de facto have the main responsibility for the children in the family. Therefore it is also essential that the family policies more consciously proceed to strengthen the women’s (and the children’s) position and direct measures towards the problems that mothers have in families.

In the society of today there is a gender power order where men are parent of women. This

superiority tends to permeate and affect institutions and organizations of the society. The responsibility

of abused women in Sweden lies with the social services and is controlled by the

the idea is for the business to form strategies and actions to provide help and support for abused

    women.

The purpose of our investigation is to see how social workers are working to reintegrate

women who live with protected personal data in the society based on the right to be self sufficient

and independent. A qualitative study using semi-structured interviews were conducted.

The empirical data, based on six social secretary experience, evaluated through a thematic

analysis and linked to previous research and theoretical perspectives SOC and gender power.

The conclusions we have reached are that the work is affected by both experience, way

of work, as well as guidelines and limitations in the legislation. The activities offered are helping

women in the acute phase but the long termed work have several limitations mainly for

The purpose of the study is to investigate social workers experiences of compassion fatigue as well as their thoughts about health and risk factors in the area. The method used is a qualitative interview study in which eight social workers, investigating child welfare matters, were individually interviewed.

The study shows that most of the social workers describe their own experiences of burnout but not of secondary traumatic stress. The most important support for not suffer from compassion fatigue is to be supported and the possibility to ventilate with colleagues and managers. However, the social workers consider that the risk of burnout is primarily due to a heavy workload in terms of the number of cases and high staff turnover.

Finally, the study indicates that social workers do not have experience of secondary traumatic stress because they are using tools that prevent this. However, the risk of experiencing burnout is high since they have not found strategies for managing workplace stress.

    Abstract [en]

Six theatre actors of both sexes differing in education and length of experience were interviewed individually on their professional competence. Phenomenological reduction generated six fundamental constituents of the actors’ professional competence interpreted in terms of a ”wheel model”: mastery of technical skills such as being able to control one’s voice and one’s body; daring to approach each new role with an open mind; being able to work effectively with co-actors in an ensemble; having a capacity for a high degree of empathy; being able to keep one’s professional and private life separate; doing one’s best at each performance. Each constituent was seen as contributing to the essence of an actor’s skill - the ability to make a role figure come alive. Similarities and differences compared with other professions are pointed out. The significance of daring to have an open mind, that is of encountering personal emotions, such as early experiences of emotional significance, in the “front region”, when studying a new role together with the director and with co-actors, is emphasized.

Social class and attitude towards cuts in the welfare system in Finland

In various earlier studies focusing on the expansion of the welfare state social class has proven to be of great significance in explaining attitudinal cleavages among citizens. This study focuses mainly on how social class influences attitudes towards cuts in three main types of welfare programmes in Finland, namely eamings-related and universal cash benefits and also universal social services and, further, to look for possible attitude differences within the classes. In addition to class, explanatory variables both mainly related to the individual's self-interest and to socialisation were included in the analysis. The study is based on data concerning respondents active in working life (N=1178) included in a Finnish nationwide survey. Results show that the attitudinal differences between social classes vary depending on the type of benefit. The greatest differences between social classes are to be found in the case of eamings-related benefits and the smallest in the case of universal cash benefits. Attitudes within the social classes vary the most among lower white-collar employees, whose attitudes are differentiated by many different explanatory variables. When it comes to variables mainly related to socialisation, the social class of the father is most important in explaining variations in attitudes; respondents with blue-collar worker fathers more often resist cuts than do respondents of the same class whose fathers are farmers or whitecollar employees. These differences are greatest among higher professionals. This finding suggests that analyses of welfare attitudes might gain from including other than only the traditional, mainly self-interest based explanatory variables. Comparing with the results from previous studies, gender seems to be of greater importance when explaining attitudes towards cuts in the welfare system; women more often resist cuts than men do. Hence, the study shows that attitudes towards cuts in the welfare system might be partially influenced by different factors than attitudes towards an expansion of the welfare system.

Att vara kommunikativt låst: Professionellas berättande om (vanskliga) vårdrelationer2016In: Socialvetenskaplig tidskrift, ISSN 1104-1420, Vol. 23, no 1, p. 59-76Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the article is to shed light on the social dynamic that characterizes communicative breakdowns. As a first stage, this has been explored through individual and group interviews with 34 healthcare professionals about situations where they claim there has been a communication breakdown. Based on the professionals’ testimonies, the research question was: how do professionals illustrate their experiences of communicative breakdowns? In terms of theory, the study draws upon an integrated approach to language and social interaction dynamics – for example how actors mediate positions and roles, but also present, negotiate and determine the course of action in patient cases. Findings show: (1) different degrees of severity in communicative breakdowns, and (2) that the professionals have developed and use both explicit and implicit strategies to handle ”delicate relationships” in this kind of interactions.

Flashback as a rhetorical online battleground: Debating the (dis)guise of the Nordic Resistance Movement2019In: Social Media + Society, ISSN 2056-3051, E-ISSN 2056-3051Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The right-wing Swedish Nordic Resistance Movement (NRM) is increasingly active on social media. Using discursive psychology, this text explores the rhetorical organization of text and rhetorical resources used on the Swedish online forum Flashback. The aim is to reveal and problematize truth claims about NRM made by antagonists and protagonists. Questions are (1) how and what do NRM antagonists and protagonists convey in Flashback posts about NRM, and its ideology and members? (2) how do NRM antagonists and protagonists make truth claims about NRM in Flashback posts? The empirical material consisting of 1546 Flashback posts analyzed to identify typical discussions on “NMR’s true nature”; accomplished social actions stemming from the posts. Findings show that the Flashback thread can be understood as being a rhetorical battle that concerns the “truth” about NRM, where a variety of rhetorical resources are used to render statements credibility and those involved legitimacy.

Lanseringen och etableringen av ett socialt problem: En analys av debatten om ledarkulturen inom svensk landslagsgymnastik i Dagens Nyheter 2012–20132015In: Sociologisk forskning, ISSN 0038-0342, Vol. 52, no 1, p. 104p. 61-79Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The launching and establishment of a social problem: An analysis of the debate on Swedish national level gymnastics in Dagens Nyheter 2012-2013

In 2012 Sweden’s largest daily newspaper, Dagens Nyheter, published a number of articles on the state of affairs in Swedish national level gymnastics. In these articles, ex-gymnasts, coaches, parents and physicians stepped forward and testified about recurrent wrongdoings and abuse against young (particularly) female gymnasts. In response to the criticism, the accused coaches and representatives of the Swedish Gymnastics Federation downsized or dismissed the criticism as inaccurate. This being said, and using discursive psychology and a qualitative design, this article sheds light upon this debate – by viewing it as a struggle between a hegemonic discourse of ”the goodness” of sports, on the one hand, a number of unfavorable and negative testimonies of the state of affairs in Swedish national level gymnastics on the other. More concretely, this struggle has been analyzed with regard to the discursive and rhetoric resources the involved parties’ used to pursue their claims about the state of affairs in Swedish national level gymnastics and the impact these resources had for their credibility and legitimacy. Questions were: Who is entitled ”to spell out” their view on the state of affairs within Swedish national level gymnastics? What is mediated and how? How are descriptions and accounts about reality constructed as credible and factual? It is concluded that social problems are launched via co-production; in this process, the gymnastics community, the research community, single individuals, and the media – were co-actors.

Äldre med alkoholmissbruk – hur bemöts de inom svensk hemtjänst?2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

According to research, alcohol consumption among people aged 65 and over increases. This is supposed to mean that homecare staff will encounter alcohol addiction more and more frequently at work. The purpose of this study is to contribute to an increased knowledge of how work on elderly patients with problematic alcohol consumption is conducted within homecare.

As a theoretical basis for the study, power, ageism, the view of man as object / subject, and approach to alcohol abuse were used. A qualitative method consisting of eight interviews with homecare staff was conducted.

The result shows that the respondents find it important to be value-free at work. They also take into account the patients’ right to privacy. According to the Social Services Act, activities within social work must be based on respect for people's self-determination and integrity, something that the respondents consider in their work. Difficulties encountered by the respondents in the work are solved, among other things, by discussing with colleagues, something that was mentioned as strategies.

It also emerged that the respondents believe that they sometimes don’t have the conditions required to meet the relevant group.

Olika informationskällors betydelse för kunskap inom sexoch samlevnadEn kvantitativ enkätstudie om ungdomars inhämtande av kunskap: inom sex och samlevnad2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The whole society is affected by the lack of knowledge and poor attitudes about sexuality and

sexual health. The purpose of the study was to describe young people's use and experience of

information sources among different areas of knowledge in sexuality and sexual health, with

a questionnaire. The result showed that friends/partners are the most valuable source of information.

Pornography is a valuable source of knowledge about ways of having sex, and social

media is a valuable source of knowledge for LGBTQ+. The most reliable sources of information

are parents, youth clinics and friends/partners. The perceived knowledge of sexuality

and sexual health in general achieved the level “moderate”, with the best knowledge

about contraception and safer sex, and the most important knowledge areas were perceived as

relationships. The most significant results showed that young people's perceived level of

knowledge in one area and perceived reliability of a source correlate with how valuable

young people experience the information source, not to what extent the source of information

    is used.

The demands of the unemployed and their role for the possibility to get a good job

This article studies what affect the demands of the unemployed and what these demands mean for the unemployeds possibility to get a good job. The study is based upon longitudinal data collected during a period of high unemployment. The results show that the demands of the unemployed are to a great extent adapted to their situation. High demands regarding qualifications are particularly common among individuals who have invested resources in vocational training. There is also a tendency for the housing situation to be important for social reasons, and for salary expectations to vary with the wage situation in the part of the labour market in which the unemployed moves. The probability of getting a good job is marginally affected by the unemployeds demands and their search behaviour. The chance to get a good job is primarily affected by social and labour market conditions in the environment of the unemployed. Newly employed more often get regular jobs and the re-employed more often get jobs that meet their demands. This study shows that many unemployed accept temporary jobs and jobs that not correspond to their demands.

Opposition and Support: A Study of Swedish Muslim Congregations

Anti-Islamic attitudes are deeply rooted in Western Europe, and Muslims have, especially in the post-September 11 context, experienced discrimination and demonization. But how do anti-Islamic attitudes affect practicing Muslims and their congregations? The aim of this study, the first of its kind in Europe, is to present a statistically representative view of how Muslim congregations in Sweden experienced the reactions from the surrounding community. The results of the survey carried out show that according to the representatives of the local congregations (n=105) half of the congregations have experienced opposition from the local community and in 40 percent of the congregations criminal offences have been committed against active Muslims or their places of worship.  This opposition is closely connected with two types of situations: either international occurrences (i.e. terrorist bombings in, for example, London, Madrid) or local events that have emphasized the presence of Islam in the public sphere. A multivariate analysis of the results of the study shows that the strongest opposition has taken place in small municipalities with a large proportion of immigrants. However, opposition does not preclude support. On the contrary, opposition appears to have a mobilizing effect on those who support the right of Muslims to exercise freedom of religion. However, neither opposition nor support are the key factors affecting whether congregations see themselves as established in the local community. The degree of anchorage depends on the demographic composition of the congregation and on the degree of contact that the members have with the surrounding community.
