    Abstract [en]

    By observing and interviewing four certified German teachers this empirical study aims to investigate how and when teachers use German versus Swedish in their German as a second language teaching. The language use was time measured, and it was also investigated in which situations the different languages were used. The findings in this study suggest that there are big differences between the investigated teachers. In the interviews all the teachers stated that their aim was to use German as much as they could while teaching, but the observations in this study show that the half of the investigated teachers act in very different ways in the classrooms in comparison to what they say, and that they use Swedish to a much bigger extent than German. All the teachers mean that it is immensely important that the pupils get to listen to the target language and the general thought is that Swedish should only be used when teaching grammar, but otherwise should German be spoken since the German lessons are the only occasions when the pupils get to listen to the target language. Reasons that are given for the use of Swedish are that it saves time and that there is much more convenient to speak Swedish than German, both for them as teachers as for the pupils who otherwise may have problems in understanding instructions etc. If the pupils have problems in understanding the teachers it also means that there will be a lack of interest in learning German, of which they use Swedish in order to keep up the spirit among the pupils. Surprisingly a teacher who has German as native language use Swedish to a very big extent in this study. She means that she finds it new and strange to use German in Sweden, but also that she finds Swedish as a much more effective language to use in class, and furthermore that the students seem to have something against language teaching, and German in general, which makes it difficult to keep the classes in the target language. To sum up it can be said that the choice of language by the teachers depends on their personalities and thoughts, but also on the Classroom climate in general

    Abstract [en]

    By examining relevant academic literature this essay aims to investigate how and when teachers are supposed to use the target language in their language teaching. Many studies have shown that the target language is the obvious choice in language teaching, whereas other studies have shown that there are big advantages in using the first language instead. In this literature study the data was collected mainly from the databases LIBRIS, Linguistics Collection and ERIC (EBSCO), and thereafter the nine steps model of Polit and Beck (2017, pp. 88–109) was used for identifying relevant data. The findings in this study suggest that there are both pros and cons with using the first language in foreign language teaching. Some of the pros are that there is suggested to be easier to include all the students in the teaching, and that they develop a better understanding when hearing the instructions in their first language. At the same time however, some researchers mean that a mixture of the L1 and the target language can lead to confusion for both the teachers and the students. In this study there is also shown that many teachers hesitate to use the target language in their teaching due to lack of knowledge in their teaching area, a further explanation is that it goes faster and is seen as more effective to hold the teaching in the first language. Even though it is suggested that the first language makes the foreign language teaching easier the most researchers and teachers mean that it is immensely important to hear the target language being spoken, since the students otherwise will find it hard to be motivated to learn a language that they never hear. A method that is being positively spoken upon is Code-switching, which means that the speaker switches between the first language and the target language. This can be seen as a tool that can be used in many different ways in order to include as many students as possible in the language teaching.

    Abstract [en]

    The topic of the following thesis is cruelty in fairy tales. For the work on hand the following fairy tales were used to examine the historical roots of the topic as well as pedagogical background: Red Riding Hood from the Brothers Grimm and Perrault as well as Han-sel and Gretel another tale of the Grimm Collection, the Tom Thumb-Version of Perrault and Ninillo und Nennella from Basile. Af-ter a short introduction to the meaning of fairy tales, the stories are retold and analyzed as well as compared to their most probable historical background and it shows that what seems to be cruel to-day had a very different meaning in the past.
