From a garbage can to a compost model of decision-making?: social policy reform and the Czech government’s reaction to the international financial crisis2014In: Social Policy & Administration, ISSN 0144-5596, E-ISSN 1467-9515, Vol. 48, no 4, p. 450-467Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article argues that the financial crisis did not have a strong impact on Czech social policy. In contrast to the garbage-can model, in which policymakers wait for a ‘window of opportunity’ to implement radical reforms, the Czech centre-right parties instead used the crisis as a means of continuing their market-liberal reforms that they had initiated before the crisis had even begun. Since they had extremely little public support for their reforms, they tried to bring about gradual change. Thus, instead of pulling radical reforms out of the garbage-can, Czech right-wing politicians have tended to take out smaller biodegradable goods that can decay and compost into fertile ground in order to sow the seeds of gradual change.

Seeking the balance between work and family after communism2012In: Marriage and Family Review, ISSN 0149-4929, E-ISSN 1540-9635, Vol. 39, no 3-4, p. 287-313Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

During the 1990s the Central-European governments all took steps in varying degrees toward implementing more conservative, re-familization policies, which support women in their roles as mothers and make it more difficult for them to remain in the labor market. This article discusses the relationship between gender attitudes and gender policy in Central Europe and the latest changes in both. We focus on two countries, Catholic Poland, and the secular Czech Republic, in order to control for the role of Catholicism as an explanatory factor of familism. Beside statistical sources, administrative data and information from interviews with policy makers, we use data from the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) 1994 and 2002 on gender and family, analyzing them at both the micro and macro levels. Our study shows that post-communist re-familization policies are coming increasingly intocontradiction with the needs and aspirations of the populace, which is becoming more positive towards gender equality © 2006 by The Haworth Press, Inc. Abstract [en]

The psychosocial needs of the elderly are a relatively unresearched area. The purpose of

this qualitative essay is to investigate the elderly’s psychosocial needs including whether

they are covered by the assistance evaluation or not. This we try to achieve with the help

of an empirical study of two opposite viewpoints: the elderly and the assistance officer.

The empirical material consists of eight individual interviews whereof four are from the

elderly and the other four from the assistance officer. Previously known research and

the psychosocial system theory including the recognition theory has been used to

empirical analyse the material. The result of the study shows that there is a lack of

giving the right help for the psychosocial needs of the elderly. The elderly group points

out the problem of feeling lonely and the importance of social interactions which appear

as deficiency in the study. The assistance officer is aware of the loneliness problem and

what it can lead to. The assistance officer points out that they are in need for more

assistance for the psychosocial work with the elderly because of lack of time and in

    some cases lack of knowledge.

Kärlek, till ett annorlunda barn: En litteraturstudie av bemötande och attityder gentemot familjer med diagnosbärande barn.2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The issue of diagnosed children has been heavily debated in the media over the

past decade. This study deals with the issue of diagnosis from a family perspective

and utilizes a method of thematic analysis trough a literature review of four

autobiographies that describes the parents experience of the diagnosis issue

regarding attitudes and responses towards their children and family. The purpose is

to create a greater understanding of the family situation and to explore new

approaches and strategies to counter psychological affliction and exclusion in

society. The results show a widespread exclusion based on the main themes,

internal and external influences. These themes represent exclusion factors like for

example inexperience in dealing with power bearing institutions such as schools

and health facilities and creates few opportunities for socialization processes due

to the child's disability, stigma. Both of these themes can be seen as a result of

sensory deprivation. The attitudes and responses of society towards the stigma

bearing child has a great negative impact on the families with diagnosed children.

Det handlar om intersektionalitet: En kvalitativ studie om hur sociala kategorier konstrueras i tre julkalendrar2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Gender Equality a case study of Sweden: Gender Equality Gender Equity and policies of combating inequality at workplace to make the society equal.2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The paper analyses Gender Equality, Gender Equity and policies of combating inequality at workplace to make the society equal as a case study of Sweden. The aim of paper is see the gender equality, gender equity, discrimination against women at workplace and to describe the policies combating inequality in the welfare state of Sweden. This work highlights the gender equality in terms of institutionalizing gender equality, gender equity, gender and pay gap, parental leave, gender and the pension system and sexual behavior directed towards women and policies combating inequality to bring equality in society. For my research I used the secondary data the fact sheets, scientific literature, statistics from eurostate of Sweden and case studies about Swedish society and the theoretical explanation to explain the phenomena. To achieve my aim I used the combination of both qualitative and quantitative methods of research. I showed the empirical evidences of these phenomena from the Swedish society and theoretical analysis about equality and equity of gender in different wakes of life. I found an interesting conclusion that there are good policies and legislation to combat inequality to bring society but there are no policies to change the perception of society about male and female role.

    Abstract [en]

The psychosocial work environment is something that affects all of us in our daily working life. Our study will seek to look at the psychosocial work environment for departments heads at Dalarna University.

The studies method is a combination of both questionnaire survey of the psychosocial work environment sent to all department heads and semi-structured interviews with five of the department heads.

The collected data will be tested against both KASAM theory and gender perspective theory. The study shows that according to our research the psychosocial work environment is in general good at Dalarna university. The study also shows a difference between the genders in how they experience their psychosocial work environment.

Women are happier in their work environment than men. Women find that they receive more help from their colleges and department heads than men do. The research points to a few number of areas where improvements are needed to make the psychosocial work environment better at Dalarna University.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay was to investigate if job-seekers are experiencing discrimination in a job interview, with emphasis on the theoretical foundation of preference discrimination and intersectionality. The essay was limited to only finding out people’s experiences of a direct and indirect discrimination regarding to age, sexuality and/or ethnicity. A survey design was chosen as method and it was answered by a total of sixty-six people. The results suggest that the population of the survey does not experience any preference discrimination nor any intersectionality.

Ett problem som måste botas: En sociologisk analys av debattörers uttryck före och efter denekonomiska krisen 20082014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to investigate how diagnosis as a social construction affectsrecognition of students from youth workers experiences. Youth workers assurveyors have been chosen because of their broad social network and the lack ofearlier studies concluding their experiences. The research question for this paperis: How does the diagnosis, as a social construction, affect the recognition ofstudents based on the experiences of youth workers? This study is based on aqualitative research method and in order to reach results we used a semi-structuredinterview. The theoretical framework that have been used in this study is KariIngstad’s theory regarding sickness as a social construction and Carl-GöranHeidegren’s theory regarding recognition. The results of this study indicate thatthere is a connection between diagnosis as a sickness and recognition of abehavior. Our conclusion is that the diagnoses does not work as a recognition ofhow a person really is but as a helping tool for recognition in social contexts.

    Abstract [sv]

Equality between the sexes has been discussed in Sweden for more than 50 years. In the 60´s and during the 70´s the discourse that dominated the debate was based on the assumption that both men and women needed to liberate themselves from their traditional gender roles. In this approach information and education was perceived as the key to equality. During the 80´s however, power and subordination became the main focal point of concern within this debate, and focus upon changing the patriarchal power structures dominating society were perceived as the principal key for establishing equality between the sexes. Today, the latter discourse still dominates both the scientific and the political perspective upon equality. By examining the debate on equality from two different fields of occupation this paper tries to analyse the fact that the Swedish equality discourse looks very different on male - versus female domination. Although the proportion of male teachers in Swedish preschools is about 3 % and the amount of women serving as public company directors is about 20 %, the current discourse views male dominance within the business sector as problematic, whilst, the dominance of women in the preschool childcare sector as less problematic. In respect of the theory supported by Bourdieu (1999), Hirdman (1990 & 2003) and Foucault (1998 & 2002) this paper advocates that the discourse is biased and simplified and that a perspective that only focuses on areas of male domination sets the wrong priorities. With regards to equality ideals prevalent throughout Norway this paper concludes that the Swedish equality discourse needs a broader and more open approach to assure that Swedish institutions promote equality between men and women in the best possible way.

    Abstract [en]

This essay in sociology is about how hearing-impaired individuals experience their social group-identity and whether their experiences are making them feel discriminated or stigmatized. Because hearing impairment is not a disability that is always obvious or visible to others the hearing impaired individuals often try to fit in. The purpose of this paper is to get an idea of if hearing-impaired adults experience being discriminated and stigmatized and also their perception of belonging to the hearing-impaired group. The study has a qualitative approach with interviews as a method. A few participants with hearing-impairment have been interviewed about their experiences in semi-structured interviews via the chat program Msn - messenger.

The results show that participants have different ways of describing their identity as hearing impaired. Although, all of them has experiences discrimination and stigmatization based on their disability. The conclusions are that these participants' answers indicate hearing-impairment as stigmatizing and source of discrimination.

This is believed to be associated with the personality of the individual and other factors, it is still a similarity in experience as such and how the participants felt about it.

The paper reviews the Marxist theory of the State around the concepts of relative autonomy of the state, hegemony, hegemonic crisis, ideology and ideological state apparatuses (ISAs). The theory is then applied to a case to demonstrate their continuous connection and ability to explain political and sociological phenomena. The chosen case is the military coup of 1980 in Turkey and the shift in ideology and hegemony along with this coup. It was observed that a hegemonic crisis preceded the coup and with the relative autonomy of the state, the military regime helped form a new hegemony which soon established its new ideology. The shift in the political ISA after the coup is analyzed as an example of the new ideology. It is argued that the political centre shifted to the right and the politics moved away from the class-based left-right axis.

Diagnosen, en tvetydig betydelse?: En kvalitativ studie om självbiografier, psykiatriska diagnoser ochberättandets mening2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Mixed marriages within Islam are defined by marriage outside of the religion, and differs between men and women. Men are allowed to marry women from the Abrahamic religions (Jewish/Christian). Women on the other hand are only allowed to espouse a Muslim man. This Bachelor’s Thesis of Sociology had the purpose through qualitative measures, investigate how believing Muslim men in Sweden view Muslim women’s rights to engage in marriages outside of the Islamic faith. The study focuses on the views and attitudes of Muslim men. As women’s position in the choice of marriages was a recurring theme in the study, these were also accounted for in terms of how their views and attitudes affects Muslims. The study’s primary data has been collected through six semistructured interviews with six faithful Muslim men in Sweden, with no relationship to each other. Through the collection of empirical data, which, through thematizing, resulted in four distinct themes. The purpose of this study was to answer the analysis from a perspective that adheres to Connells theory of masculinity (hegemonic masculinity) and the term “homosocial”. The result from the study showed that all six interviewed Muslim men, generally, had a negative attitude towards Muslim women’s rights to marry outside the religion. The (Muslim) men were also negative to changes regarding (Muslim) women and the liberation of their rights around mixed marriages. Some men exhibited an increased focus on the interpretation of religious texts, as well as assumptions, whilst others emphasized culture and tradition. An articulate pattern amongst the Muslim men manifested through opinions that a marriage is a collective matter rather than an individual affair. The analysis concludes that there is a difference between men and women and their rights within the engagement of marriage. This leads to women’s behavior, freedom and choices are dictated by men’s opinions, assumptions and interpretations of religious texts. Although demonstrating a clear division between women and men’s rights within Islam’s approach to mixed marriages. The (Muslim) men considered the established religious interpretations to be legitimate and logically developed to protect the woman from precarious marriages. The interviewees considered the approach to be a conserving measure to protect Islam.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate how the role of a coach affects the private life. In orderto fulfill the purpose of this study we have used a qualitative method with seven conductedinterviews. The questions that where asked in the interviews were in the themes of norms, roleand role identity. The collected information from the interviews was transcribed and used in atable and was analyzed through a thematic analysis. This was conducted for the purpose that itwould answer the issues of the study. The results showed that different variables, for examplethe opinions on the private role, the role as a coach, norms, and each individuals relation to thenorms, could affect the private life of the coaches. These variables can together with the usingof different theories give a picture of the reasons why each individual is affected in the waythey are.

Arbetsintegration- Nyckeln till frihet?: En kvalitativ studie av flyktingars visioner samt upplevelser och erfarenheterav den svenska integrations- och etableringsprocessen.2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

People coming to Sweden to earn a living by begging is a phenomenon that isgrowing considerably over a very short time. There is notable inequality betweenthe Romani and the Swedish people in many areas of the country where Romanicommunities are more vulnerable to discrimination. Both politicians and the mediahave taken up this issue frequently alike. The purpose of the study is to review andanalyse the articles regarding Romani beggars, and see how the newspapers'presentations influence the reader’s own opinions. We will also look at what liesbehind why they write the way they do. We limited ourselves to RomanianRomani beggars, as it was most often this group that is highlighted in the media aspanhandlers. The essay has a social constructionist perspective because we believethat the media has a large impact on public discourse. The empirical data is based on 10 articles each from Aftonbladet and SvenskaDagbladet. To get answers to our questions, we used a comparative qualitativethematic content analysis method. We analysed news items from variousnewspapers to get a picture of how Romani begging presented. After that, acomparison was made of the material to see if there were any differences inperspective and presentation between Aftonbladet and Svenska Dagbladet. Theanalysis suggests that in Swedish newspapers, there is notable bias against Romanibeggars, and a marked disconnect in grasping the reality of Roma begging. Thestudy’s results demonstrate not only the media's influential position in society, butalso how it can be a contributory factor to systematic discrimination. The resultshows that there are both differences and similarities in the newspapers’presentation of the subject matter, as well as that what is written and how theinformation is presented, can have a distinct impact on how the Romani who begare perceived by readersKeywords: beggar, begging

”Nej men nu låter det ju helt befängt!”: En studie av en gymnasieorganisations förhållningssätt till kultur- och hedersfrågor.2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

How are we to understand causal relations and analysis in socialscience? This paper takes R. G. Collingwood’s writing aboutcausation as its point of departure for the answering of thisquestion. Two different kinds of causal relations are distinguishedfrom pseudo-causality; of the former, one is directly connected toreason, the other to our ability to manipulate the world. Theirinterconnection and significance are discussed and theconclusions are drawn that (a) causality belongs to the realm ofhuman praxis and that (b) causal analysis proper is well suited forthe social sciences. It is further showed that some importantexplanations are not causal in any of the above-mentionedsenses. These explanations could conceivably be calledinterpretative descriptions, but it is suggested that perhaps theycan be understood as examples of causa sui, of something selfcaused.
