The concept of e-service from a social interaction perspective2005In: Proceedings of the Action in Language, Organisations and Information Systems, Limerick, Ireland, 2005, p. 65-80Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Today’s e-services are complex phenomenon consisting of several different e-services linked together. The e-services are provided by IT systems and presented to customers through user interfaces. Within web design research criteria are laid out for the design of good user interfaces, but one problem is that these analyses are performed without a service focus. This lack of service focus can result in the designed user interfaces providing indistinct service concepts, especially where several e-services are intertwined with each other. In order to design IT system interfaces, we have to be clear about which e-services are provided by the IT system and how these e-services are related to each other. This paper presents a framework for the analysis of user interfaces in terms of focused e-service, service environment and two types of intertwined e-services; related e-services and interrelating e-services. The analyses are exemplified by an Internet based e-marketplace. The paper discusses how the framework can be combined with ordinary web design criteria and how it can be used for e-service development.

    Abstract [sv]

Banverket Trafik has a responsibility to make sure that the companies who traffic the Swedish railroad have the correct information about the status of the railroad. One of Banverket Trafiks information systems (Opera) presents the train’s actual position on a map and provides the user with physical information about the trains. Due to increasing demands on the information systems, Banverket Trafik needs to update the present system architecture in order to manage the increasing demands on map graphics and map functions. This paper analysis the information system Opera on the basis of theory and support of methods and discuss problems and demands for Opera. Further we investigate three GIS products to se if they meet the demands. Information about the products was gathered from both supplier and independent users to get a just picture of the products potentials. This paper comprises a suggestion of new system architecture that meet these needs. The suggested system architecture is capable of handling the map graphics and the map’s functions of more than one information system. Hopefully more than one information system will use the suggested system architecture as a map service.

Identifying the contemporary status of e-service sustainability research2015In: International Journal of E-Services and Mobile Applications, ISSN 1941-627X, E-ISSN 1941-627X, Vol. 7, no 3Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Sustainable development is a major concern all over the world. Indeed, it is required in every domain of life, including that of government. E-services are widely acknowledged for the contribution they make to e-government. The research question raised in this study is: What is the existing status of e-service sustainability research? The research method used is a literature study that adopts a concept-centric approach. Literature was collected from high-ranking IS journals and relevant databases. Selected literature was then analyzed using the twin concepts of e-service sustainability itself and the enabler (secondary) effects of sustainable e-services. The Triple Bottom Line’s model was used to further categorize the findings using economic, environmental, and social sustainability concepts. Finally, the selected papers were analyzed in terms of research approach and topic. The results of the study revealed a lack of research into e-service sustainability. By way of contrast, it revealed 20 articles that cover the enabler effect. Existing research is related to economic and social dimensions, with the most common topic being related to user satisfaction.

Markets and Events: The future of rural retail survival2010Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This study examines what kind of role events have when it comes to local retail in the rural municipality of Gagnef, located about 240 km northwest of the capital city Stockholm. Rural retail is exposed to an increasing competition from the growing number of shopping centers in larger cities; the rural merchants need to find new ways of strengthening their businesses. The current conditions of the retail are examined by interviewing stakeholders, involved in local retail, events and municipal decision-making. A survey among the visitors of the local events is also conducted, in order to see how consumers perceive the services in, and around the events.  The result reveals that the local events are indeed an important factor to a few of the local shops. However, for most of the shop owners in Gagnef, the  events do not have an important impact on their businesses. Still, all the stakeholders believe that these arrangements hold a potential of strengthening the local shops. One of the major problems in today’s situation is the lack of collaboration between the different stakeholders involved in retail and events. In order to be able to use the events as a competitive advantage, it has to be an enhanced cooperation between these stakeholders. It is important that merchants, and other stakeholders in rural communities, are active in strengthening their position in the growing competition from large shopping centers in neighboring cities. The formation of the cooperative bodies, where merchants and other stakeholders can communicate and plan common strategies, could increase the possibility for the events to become a positive growth factor for the rural municipality and its retail.

Is the spatial scope of agglomeration economies on wages the same across the wage earnings distribution?2015Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

We investigate the spatial scope of employment density across the wage distribution within four distance bands around each individual’s place of work. Observable and unobservable individual and workplace characteristics are controlled for. Remaining endogeneity in the wage model framework is assessed with an IV approach. Results indicate a positive effect of employment density on wages within 5 kilometres. The effect is negative beyond 50 kilometres. The spatial scope of employment density is larger at the higher end of the wage distribution but the effect closest to the establishment seems larger at the lower end of the wage distribution.

Strategic alliances in a town centre: Stakeholders' perceived importance of the property owners2014In: International Review of Retail Distribution & Consumer Research, ISSN 0959-3969, E-ISSN 1466-4402Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In order for town centres to manage increased competition in retailing, cooperation between stakeholders in a strategic alliance has become more important. Typical stakeholders in such a strategic alliance are retailers, local authorities, and property owners. The importance of retailers and local authorities is well researched. However, the property owners’ importance is not. The aim of this article is to uncover the perceived importance of property owners in a strategic alliance. This is a case study of a medium-sized town in which semi-structured interviews with different stakeholders were conducted. In the chosen town there is a town centre management alliance at work. The case studied shows a fragmented property owner market with no dominant property owner. Our study shows that the perception of the role of the property owner is crucial for town centre development. However, many property owners do not recognise their own significance for the town centre development. The main reasons for this opinion are that they do not consider themselves to have enough resources or the capability to influence the town development.

Firm migration in the Swedish wholesale trade sector2013In: International Review of Retail Distribution & Consumer Research, ISSN 0959-3969, E-ISSN 1466-4402, Vol. 23, no 1Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper analyzes the determinants of firm migration in the Swedish wholesale trade sector using a unique dataset covering over 10,000 Swedish wholesale trade firms during the years 2000 to 2004. The results indicate that there are negative correlations between profits, firm age, and firm size and the probability of firm migration. There is a positive correlation between firm growth in the previous year and firm migration, indicating that growth opportunities that cannot be realized at the present location are an important motivation for migration.

Predicting entry of Swedish wholesale firms into local markets2013Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Applying microeconomic theory, we develop a forecasting model for firm entry into local markets and test this model using data from the Swedish wholesale industry. The empirical analysis is based on directly estimating the profit function of wholesale firms. As in previous entry studies, profits are assumed to depend on firm- and location-specific factors, and the profit equation is estimated using panel data econometric techniques. Using the residuals from the profit equation estimations, we identify local markets in Sweden where firm profits are abnormally high given the level of all independent variables included in the profit function. From microeconomic theory, we then know that these local markets should have higher net entry than other markets, all else being equal, and we investigate this in a second step, also using a panel data econometric model. The results of estimating the net-entry equation indicate that four of five estimated models have more net entry in high-return municipalities, but the estimated parameter is only statistically significant at conventional levels in one of our estimated models.

Stayers and movers: Understanding the sorting dynamics that cause socio-economic residential segregation2016Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Although many argue that residential segregation is related to selective migration, certainly in Sweden, this view has recently been somewhat challenged when a broader demographic analysis, the so-called demographic conveyer approach, has been used to study the segregation process. However, the number of studies and cases using the demographic conveyer approach to study segregation is limited. In this paper, we apply an elaborated demographic conveyer approach in a new context to describe and analyse the underlying sorting dynamics that over time cause residential segregation. To do so, we follow the individual’s socio-economic carriers, between 1990 and 2008 in three neighbourhoods that have become socio-economically weak. We compare the career outcomes of stayers, in-migrants and out-migrants, and by doing so, we draw conclusions about the underlying dynamics that cause socio-economic segregation. The analysis is conducted in a medium-sized Swedish city which has rapidly become highly segregated since the early 1990s, making it possible to basically follow the evolution of the current segregated situation. Our main conclusion is that the segregation process is due to migration, however, not to internal migration, but rather external immigration. The degree of segregation is highly related to institutional circumstances, since immigrants basically settle in dwellings owned by the public housing company. In our case, the public housing apartments are highly concentrated to the studied area. We also find a general improvement in socio-economic situations regarding both educational levels and unemployment levels for in-migrants, out-migrants and stayers. However, the relationship between the inflows and outflows changes essentially from a situation when the inflows improved the population’s socio-economic status to a situation where the reverse is true. This is accentuated when income is taken into account. The paper also shows that individuals moving away from a segregated neighbourhood, who do not end up in similar neighbourhoods in the city, have better socio-economic carriers than those who stay in one of the three neighbourhoods during the period.

Dataskyddsreformens påverkan på organisationer: Förutsättningar, förberedelser och utmaningar med dataskyddsförordningen2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Gathering and storing of data has grown exponentially the last two decades and today, personal information is to a much greater extent available to the public. Concerning the technical development in today’s society, EU has decided that the national interpretations of EU: s data retention directive is to be replaced by a mutual directive called the general data protection regulation (GDPR).

This is a case study in which we’ve studied what qualifications and obstacles organizations possess in order to meet the new law and what challenges GDPR will bring. Through interviews in both the private and public sector we’ve concluded that there are a number of qualifications needed to meet GDPR. Among them, good cooperation between employees and management and encouragement to participation within the organizations. However, it is hard to estimate exactly what qualifications will be necessary to meet the new law before it’s implemented in May of 2018.

We also concluded that the challenges with the new law will be many and will implicate more responsibility and work. More responsibility will be required when it comes to storing and localizing personal information, and to compile new routines and ways to work in order to anchor the new law within the organizations.

Gemensamt arbetssätt för ständiga förbättringar: En nulägesanalys av SSAB:s förbättringsarbete2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Data har samlats in via gruppintervju.

Animationers inverkan på användarens förtroende för webbplatsen2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate if animation can be used to influence a user’s trust in a website in situations where trust is of great importance, such as registration of subscription service or social media. The purpose is also to find out which type of animations that gives a trustworthy impression. Literature studies, visual content analysis and questionnaire survey have been used to carry out the survey. The result showed that animations can be used to increase a user's trust in a website. It also showed which animations can be used to increase trust. The results show that websites should contain some form of animation to increase trust, the user wants to receive feedback when interacting with the site. The feedback should be given as quickly as possible and with some kind of duration. The animations should increase the contrast of the element to its surroundings, no matter what kind of animation it is. However, the contrast should not be too obvious.

Opera – Operativ Tåginformation2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

To what extent are CO2 emissions from intra-urban shopping trips by cars affected by drivers’ travel behaviour and store location?2016Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Transportation is seen as one of the major sources of CO2 pollutants nowadays. The impact of increased transport in retailing should not be underestimated. Most previous studies have focused on transportation and underlying trips, in general, while very few studies have addressed the specific affects that, for instance, intra-city shopping trips generate. Furthermore, most of the existing methods used to estimate emission are based on macro-data designed to generate national or regional inventory projections. There is a lack of studies using micro-data based methods that are able to distinguish between driver behaviour and the locational effects induced by shopping trips, which is an important precondition for energy efficient urban planning. The aim of this study is to implement a micro-data method to estimate and compare CO2 emission induced by intra-urban car travelling to a retail destination of durable goods (DG), and non-durable goods (NDG). We estimate the emissions from aspects of travel behaviour and store location. The study is conducted by means of a case study in the city of Borlänge, where GPS tracking data on intra-urban car travel is collected from 250 households. We find that a behavioural change during a trip towards a CO2 optimal travelling by car has the potential to decrease emission to 36% (DG), and to 25% (NDG) of the emissions induced by car-travelling shopping trips today. There is also a potential of reducing CO2 emissions induced by intra-urban shopping trips due to poor location by 54%, and if the consumer selected the closest of 8 existing stores, the CO2 emissions would be reduced by 37% of the current emission induced by NDG shopping trips.

    Abstract [sv]

Elektronisk rese- och upplevelseguide, konceptuell modell som nyttjar nationella databaser2004Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In this study, conducted in Landstinget Dalarna, the communication system Microsoft Lync has been studied. Lync consist of chat, video and telephone conferencing and document sharing. The purpose of this study is to explain how education can affect people’s acceptance of a communication system and what causes that may be because it is not used. In order to answer the study's purpose, a quasi-experiment was used conducted by two interview rounds and training for the users between these interview rounds. Based on interviews conclusions on how the training had influenced user acceptance for communication system Lync could be drawn. The model Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) was used to study the various factors that influence user acceptance of the technology. The conclusion should answer questions about how education affect people's acceptance and what could be the reasons that a communication system like Lync is not used. After the training, some impact of user acceptance occurred on the communication module chat, the user’s approach had been changed and the respondents saw an increase in benefits after training. The training had no effect when respondents did not see any benefit.

Where do e-Government strategies take the Nordic nations?2016In: Electronic Journal of e-Government, ISSN 1479-439X, E-ISSN 1479-439X, Vol. 14, no 1, p. 2-16Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

An effective strategy is critical for the successful development of e-Government. The leading nations in the e-Government rankings include Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland. Their leading role makes them interesting to study when looking for reasons to successful e-Government. The purpose of this research paper is to describe the e-Government development strategies of Nordic countries, which rank highly on the international stage. In particular it aims to study the foci of these strategies. The approach is a document study of the e-Government development strategies of Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland was carried out using a qualitative content analysis inductive method. The results show that the major focus of Nordic e-Government strategies is on public sector reforms. Other focus areas include economic reforms and, to a lesser extent, e-Democracy efforts. Sweden, Finland and Norway have set ambitious policy goals in order to achieve global leadership in e-Government development. In response to the question posed by this paper’s title, we can say that Nordic e-Government strategies, except for Norway, focus more on reforming public sector services than on economic reforms.  E-Democracy reforms are hardly focused on at all.

Practical implications: Public sector policy makers can relate their policy foci to some of the more successful e-Government countries in the world. Research implications/originality is that this paper can apart from the findings also provide a means on how to identify the actual foci of a country’s e-Government policy.

Att tillämpa återkommande mätning av kundnöjdhet i IT-projekt: En vidareutvecklad modell baserad på modellerna American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) och SERVQUAL2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In today's society, it is increasingly important for companies to retain their existing customers when competition becomes increasingly fierce. This means that companies are trying to take steps to nurture relationships with its customers. This problem is very relevant in the IT industry. In the IT industry, it is common to work agile in IT projects. Our partner has seen an increased need to measure service quality with a regular approach in IT projects, in order to measure the relevant variables that extend beyond the specifications. To measure success regarding this approach would be to measure Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) of IT projects. As previous research demonstrated the absence of models containing both the measurement of service quality and CSI have literature studied where it emerged that the model SERVQUAL is established for the measurement of service quality and model the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) is established for the measurement of CSI. This has been the basis of work problem and purpose. The aim is to create an improved model for the measurement of CSI between IT projects and recurring measurement of service quality in IT projects. Creation of this model has been made through research strategy Design and Creation. Interviews have been conducted for requirements capture to the refined model. The result of this research strategy was then a further developed model based on the above models with recurring approach for the measurement of service quality in IT projects and measurement of CSI between IT projects. The resulting model is then verified through further interviews with respondents holding good experience from the customer side of IT projects. From these interviews conclusion could be drawn that this model is considered to be applicable in the empirical data regarding IT projects.

Förslag till system för rapportering av järnvägens säkerhetsrelaterade händelser2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

3. Vilken information skall Järnvägsstyrelsen samla in? 4. Hur skall insamling ske?

    Abstract [sv]

In today's society it is becoming more and more important with direct marketing. Some of the direct marketing is done through e-mail, in which companies see an easy way to advertise himself. I did this thesis work at WebDoc Systems. They have a product that creates web documents directly in your browser, also called CMS. The CMS has a module for sending mass e-mail, but this module does not function properly and WebDoc Systems customers are dissatisfied with that part of the product. The problem with the module was that sometimes it didn't send the e-mail, and that it was not possible to obtain some form of follow-up information on the e-mail. The goal of this work was to develop a Web service that could easily send e-mail to many receivers, just as easily be able to view statistics on how mailing has gone. The first step was to do a literature review to get a good picture of available programming platforms, but also to be able create a good application infrastructure. The next step was to implement this design and improve it over time by using an iterative development methodology. The result was an application infrastructure that consists of three main parts and a plugin interface. The parts that were implemented were a Web service application, a Web application and a Windows service application. The three elements cooperate with each other and share a database, and plugins.

    Abstract [en]

This paper reports the development and evaluation of a mobile-based telemedicine framework for enabling remote monitoring of Parkinson’s disease (PD) symptoms. The system consists of different measurement devices for remote collection, processing and presentation of symptom data of advanced PD patients. Different numerical analysis techniques were applied on the raw symptom data to extract clinically symptom information which in turn were then used in a machine learning process to be mapped to the standard clinician-based measures. The methods for quantitative and automatic assessment of symptoms were then evaluated for their clinimetric properties such as validity, reliability and sensitivity to change. Results from several studies indicate that the methods had good metrics suggesting that they are appropriate to quantitatively and objectively assess the severity of motor impairments of PD patients.

"Change-makers in midwifery care": Exploring the differences between expectations and outcomes - a qualitative study of a midwifery net-based education programme in the Somali region2019In: Midwifery, ISSN 0266-6138, E-ISSN 1532-3099, Vol. 69, p. 135-142Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to explore midwifery educators’ expected outcomes in the net-based master's programme, the programmes’ realised outcomes and the reported difference regarding the increased choices for the graduates and the effect on their agency.

    Design

In this case study, we focused on a net-based master's programme in sexual and reproductive health in Somalia. Somalia suffers from a shortage of skilled birth attendants and there is a need for building up the capacity of midwifery educators.

    Setting and participants

Data was collected in focus group discussions at the start of the programme and eight months after the students graduated. The data were analysed through the lens of the choice framework, which is based on the capability approach.

    Findings

Findings show that many of the graduates’ expectations were met, while some were more difficult to fulfil. While the midwives’ choices and resource portfolios had improved because of their role as educators, the social structure prevented them from acting on their agency, specifically in regards to making changes at the social level. Several of the positive developments can be attributed to the pedagogy and structure of the programme.

    Conclusion

The flexibility of net-based education gave the midwifery educators a new educational opportunity that they previously did not have. Students gained increased power and influence on some levels. However, they still lack power in government organisations where, in addition to their role as educators, they could use their skills and knowledge to change policies at the social level.

    Abstract [sv]

Today, there are no standardized ways to characterize SOA, many are talking about SOA and many say they are using SOA. One way that we have chosen to characterize this phenomenon is through an evaluation that will indicate whether SOA have been used in the development. Based on a Service Oriented Architecture literature study, we have created an evaluation pattern resulting SOA principles of integration, architecture and services. This evaluation was applied to Logica's own integration system AgrCom through an empirical study to result in a response indicating whether AgrCom is SOA based. The results of the evaluation show that AgrCom is part of an SOA solution but not an SOA as a whole concept. The study shows that it takes more than just systems in an activity to be referred to as the SOA-based, hence the architecture of an activity must be taken into account.

Förstudie av MMS-tjänster för bildöverförd trafikinformation2004Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Requirements engineering within software development is the foundation of what needs to be developed. Agile methods in software development become more common every day. It has however often been shown that there are certain challenges with how to adopt the requirements engineering to the agile methodology.

Businesses have different preconditions for agile methods. Lantmäteriet in Gävle had a need to examine why not all the developing teams followed agile methods within the requirements engineering process.

The purpose with this thesis was thus to examine why some developing teams in an organization worked in an agile manner with the requirements engineering, and some did not. To do this I performed a case study where I collected data through questionnaires and interviews from both developers and people from the business side. The results showed that the reasons for these differences were multiple. Communication and flexibility, and knowledge and understanding for different perspectives were the positive factors. The themes that hindered an agile way of working were, among others, unclear roles, lack of direction, too much reliance on methods and processes, discrepancy between business and IT, prioritizing issues, management plans, attitudes and IT architecture.

Mobil IT-tjänst för trafikinformation baserad på vald resväg2004Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Sensitivity analysis of a risk classification model for food price volatility2018In: International Journal of Risk Assessment and Management, ISSN 1466-8297, E-ISSN 1741-5241, Vol. 21, no 4, p. 374-382Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A sensitivity analysis to vary the weights of an accurate predictive classification model to produce a mixed model for ranking countries on the risk of food price volatility is carried out in this paper. The classification model is a marginal utility function consisting of multiple criteria. The aim of the sensitivity analysis is to derive a mixed model to be used in ranking of country alternatives to aid in policy formulation. Since in real-life situations the data that goes into decision making could be subjected to possibilities of alterations over time, it is essential to aid decision makers to vary the weights of the criteria using both subjective and objective information to introduce imprecision and to generate relative values of the criteria with a scale to form a mixed model. The mixed model can be used to rank future relative alternative value data sets for policy formulation.

A Decision Tool Approach to Sensitivity Analysis in a Risk Classification Model2018In: Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A Decision Analytical tool capable of handling numerically imprecise data for decision making is used in this paper to analyze the risk of the effect of data alteration in the ranking positions of country alternatives for food price volatility. Unguided decision making processes would lead to non-optimal decisions with it’s dire consequences on the resources of organizations. The paper is thus guided by the use of an accurate risk classification model to implement uncertainty and imprecision which are essential part of real life decision making processes with computer based tools to overcome the problem of possibilities uncertain and imprecise input data of criteria and alternatives. A ranking of the alternatives is conducted after imprecision is considered in the input data and a further analysis is carried out to determine which criteria is sensitive enough to alter the position of a country in the rankings.

Trust based service selection in service oriented environment2012In: International Journal of Web Services Research, ISSN 1545-7362, E-ISSN 1546-5004, Vol. 9, no 3, p. 23-42Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In a service-oriented environment, it is inevitable and indeed quite common to deal with web services, whose reliability is unknown to the users. The reputation system is a popular technique currently used for providing a global quality score of a service provider to requesters. However, such global information is far from sufficient for service requesters to choose the most qualified services. In order to tackle this problem, the authors present a trust based architecture containing a computational trust model for quantifying and comparing the trustworthiness of services. In this trust model, they firstly construct a network based on the direct trust relations between participants and rating similarity in service oriented environments, then propose an algorithm for propagating trust in the social network based environment which can produce personalized trust information for a specific service requester, and finally implement the trust model and simulate various malicious behaviors in not only dense but also sparse networks which can verify the attack-resistant and robustness of the proposed approach. The experiment results also demonstrate the feasibility and benefit of the approach.

An efficient and reliable approach for quality-of-service-aware service composition2014In: Information Sciences, ISSN 0020-0255, E-ISSN 1872-6291, Vol. 269, p. 238-254Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

With the rapidly increasing number of independently developed Web services that provide similar functionalities with varied quality of service (QoS), service composition is considered as a problem in the selection of component services that are in accordance with users' QoS requirements; a practice known as the QoS-aware service composition problem. However, current solutions are unsuitable for most real-time decision-making service composition applications required to obtain a relatively optimal result within a reasonable amount of time. These services are also unreliable (or even risky) given the open service-oriented environment. In this paper, we address these problems and propose a novel heuristic algorithm for an efficient and reliable selection of trustworthy services in a service composition. The proposed algorithm consists of three steps. First, a trust-based selection method is used to filter untrustworthy component services. Second, convex hulls are constructed to reduce the search space in the process of service composition. Finally, a heuristic global optimization approach is used to obtain the near-optimal solution. The results demonstrate that our approach obtains a close-to-optimal and reliable solution within a reasonable computation time.

Using Real-Time Event Stream Framework to Develop RFID-based Retailer Supermarket Systems2011In: Information Systems Development, Springer Science+Business Media B.V., 2011, p. 429-440Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

With the increasing mature of hardware technology and the continuous reduction of RFID production cost, the technology has been widely used in many fields. This paper proposes a real-time event stream framework for RFID system and develops a retail supermarket management system for the purpose of commodity monitoring and tracing. An event-centric architecture for the RFID real-time is designed, which can support both real-time event queries over event streams and history event queries on event databases. Event types of retail supermarkets are analyzed in details, and the event relation diagram among them is given. Based on the framework, an event filtering method using a hash table to remove redundant data and an improved SASE method to process complex events are presented.

IT-system och organisationsutveckling2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

This report describes work on the thesis “IT systems and organizational development”. The work is carried out on Stocksbro Energi AB, during spring 2009. The company wanted better flow in their production but also review if the inventory management function located in Visma SPCS Administration 2000, could be used in the organization. Under the first part of this report the system were tested to ensure if the system would work together with the organization. After testing the desired features they were evaluated along with two of the users to the system at the company. The wanted functions could not be obtained when the Admin 2000 is an economic system and are not made for the producing companies. Thereafter the theoretical possibility was examined of introducing a more advanced system to get the desired functionality to work together with the organization. To introduce a more advanced system will require major changes of the organization, before, during and after the introduction. It is therefore important how the management implements a possibility of a new system. It’s important to make the staff join in this implementation but also get as much as possible out of the system. To conclude the thesis a goal and problem analysis but also a solution proposal was made with the help of the FA/SIMM method. Also some suggestions are mentioned how the company could proceed in the implementation of the proposals for a solution.

Utformningen av en utvärderingsmodell för utbildningsverktyg: Till hjälp för en tillämpning av Game Design Based Learning inom utbildning2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Digital games in today's society are becoming more common and have in the past few years been used in education and teaching around the world. Using games and technology in an education has both positive and negative impact on the students as well as the school. The positive aspects of technology lead to increased motivation and commitment among the students, but at the same time can lead to more negative factors, such as social isolation, expensive costs or a distraction that may adversely affect other courses in education.

This report aims to be a support in selecting educational tools to be used for Game Design Based Learning (GDBL). This support consists of an evaluation model that can be used, for example, by teachers who wish to apply GDBL in their education. The work has been carried out with the support of the research strategy design and creation, where the development and the production of an artefact has taken place. The evaluation model has been designed using the current research strategy. The data collection for the work has been done by searching for training tools, including the search engine Google Search, along with relevant terms for the work, such as drag & drop.

When applying GDBL and the choice of training tools, it takes into account both the opportunities offered by GDBL, but also the negative risks that exist. The evaluation model has also been tested on five different training tools to validate the evaluation model. These five training tools are Scratch, Kodu Game Lab, Kahoot, Quizizz and Twine. Finally, we found that two of the training tools are the most suitable for educational purposes. These were Kahoot and Quizizz, which are simple quiz games, that is, they do not require education or programming to be used in a classroom. This was based on an established scenario, which was to find a training tool for a program that focuses on graphic design.

Matchandet av behov genom Clean Architecture i ett informationssystem: En fallstudie om systemarkitektursval i Transportstyrelsens Administrativa Process Stöd.2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

When updating systems with new technology, conscious choices are needed in how the software is supposed to be put together, an important component of that composition is the architecture of the system.

The management team at Nethouse Borlänge has been tasked with updating the Transport Board's system to lift the technical platform in the eleven subsystems that constitute the Transportstyrelsens Administrativa Process Stöd (TRAP) information system, in the updating process they need to choose system architecture. Nethouse has shown interest in choosing the architecture of Clean Architecture in its update of the system and therefore wants to find out if the architecture fits their needs.

The study contributes knowledge of if the system architecture Clean Architecture corresponds to the TRAP needs of the information system.

A case study on the Nethouse management project uses a qualitative data analysis to determine the needs of the information system and compare them to Clean Architecture's attributes. The result contributes knowledge in the decision on the system architecture to be used in the TRAP the information system.

The study found that Clean Architecture matches TRAPS's system architecture needs and could be an option in the Nethouse management project.

Utvärdering av kravhanteringsmetod: Täcker Stjärnan viktiga delar av kravhanteringsprocessen i ensystemarkitektonisk kontext ?2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In today's IT operations, procurement of a new IT platform is a way of developing a business and its

business. Platforms can be purchased or built by the company itself. If the company decides to buy a

standard system, there’s a huge range of standardized platforms to choose from. However, many

standard systems do not provide desired results for the business or remain unused in some cases. It is

therefore important to carry out a task in which you correctly identify and describe an activity's needs to

avoid the procurement of a standard system that does not produce results.

By using methodologies, companies get a kind of framework they can work from and in this age there

are many different requirements such as Rational Unified Process (RUP) or ISO / IEC 25000 called

System and Software Quality Requirements and Evaluation (SQuaRE).

One of these requirements is Stjärnan, which is a popular method of use in Sweden.

Stjärnan is initially based on the internationally recognized method RUP. Stjärnan has taken parts of

RUP and scaled it down to create a method adapted to Swedish operations. Stjärnan is generally used to

capture and structure the work of crafts in a system development project.

We have evaluated Stjärnan in a system architectural context to see how well adapted it is to Swedish

operations. We have produced a requirement specification in our process, which is a practical part of the

    evaluation we carry out.

In our evaluation we have used an evaluation model we chose to call the Bass model. This model

measures how well a method meets criteria within the process.

The empirical report is based on interviews and mail correspondence as well as document collection.

This has been done to answer our question "Does Stjärnan cover key parts of the requirements

management process in a system architectural context?"

The result of our report shows that Stjärnan covers important parts of the requirement management

process in a system architectural context. This result emerges from our analysis, where we show through

a matrix whether the star meets the criteria the Bass model demands

    Multi-contextuality in boundary-spanning Practices2008In: Information Systems Journal, ISSN 1350-1917, E-ISSN 1365-2575, Vol. 18, no 6, p. 641-661Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The capability to establish boundary-spanning practices within and across organizations has for long been recognized as a key strategic resource. As organizations are becoming distributed and dynamic, they will be increasingly populated by multiple functional, geographical, hierarchical and professional boundaries. The inherent complexity of such settings makes it difficult for organizations to leverage their boundary-spanning practices. Information technology (IT) systems have been hailed as a critical enabler of boundary spanning. However, there is little knowledge on how organizations are affected by the introduction of different types of IT systems. Building on an interpretive case study of Swedish transport organizations, this paper explores consequences of sensor technology for boundary spanning. The paper contributes with an understanding of what coexisting use contexts mean for boundary-spanning practices. A theoretical implication is that such multi-contextuality requires an integrative view on boundary spanning that combines insights from the organizational innovation and work practice literatures.

Jämförelse av två system för att bedöma vinter väglag: Ett nytt system i utvecklingen för att säkra Sveriges vägar2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Trafikverket is the government branch that operates all of Sweden's roads and

railroads and one of their main goals is the so called zero vision. The idea behind

zero vision is that all roads shall be safe to use and that no one should get injured

while on the roads. One part of fulfilling this goal is that Trafikverket gives out short

term forecast about the road conditions and driving conditions. Currently a manual

system called NTIS is used, but Trafikverket is currently developing a new

automatic system called RCC. RCC is supposed to be able to form short term

forecast by using different kinds of data such as weather stations.

The reason behind this study is to compare how well the two different systems do a

short term forecast. They are paired against each other, but the goal is also to look

how it really was in reality. The study was done as an explanatory case study. Data

was collect by document of many kinds and the analysis was quantitative since the

result is a percentage of how well each system had done.

During the study many things were concluded. Such as both systems had their

strengths and flaws. For example the old NTIS system was still better at icy and

slushy roads. While the new RCC system was good at snowy and wet roads. Also a

clear strength and also reason behind RCC was it’s automatic and constant report

time, which was a problem in the NTIS systemet. The result of the study was a

percentage how well each system did. But also suggestions how rules of the new

RCC system may be improved was also given that may strengthen the result of the

    system.

En utvärderande fallstudie av lärplattformen Learn2Esport: Med fokus på användbarhet2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Usability for software implies that it should be easy for the user to understand how to perform the tasks the user intends to do. There are methods and standards available to use for ensuring that software is usable, but it is common to underestimate the resources needed to ensure usability during development. Our partner for the report expressed a need to evaluate the usability of the learning management system Learn2Esport which is one of their products, hence the purpose of the report was to identify deficiencies, as well as provide suggestions for improvement of the product. To accomplish this, we performed a case study with both qualitative and quantitative methods. Four individual interviews were made to identify deficiencies and then a heuristic evaluation according to proven guidelines. The evaluation resulted in 20 identified deficiencies of varying degrees of severity, ranging from minor deficiencies such as misleading choice of concepts, to major deficiencies that cause the user to avoid using features. Seven of these 20 are considered to be major usability issues that are important to resolve. To give suggestions for improvement we provided textual descriptions of how the deficiencies can be solved but also graphical sketches for how the most critical deficiencies can be solved.

Web Services – för enklare användning av karttjänster2004Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Riktlinjer för design av karma-baserade ’WebReputation System’: För ’Collaborative Web Applications’2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The number of internet users is growing by the second and with an

increase of internet users, there is also an increase of User-generated

content. Web application that bases their buisness on User-generated

content is often called by the name Collaborative Web Applications. There

is a challenge for those types of applications to maintain high quality of

content, since the amount of content that flows in is massive. Previous

studies in the area propose that this challenge might be answered by a

Web Reputation System. Previous studies has also proposed to divide

Web Reputation System into various simple models. One of these models

is karma, which is the focus in this report. Karma as a model aims to

reward users who contribute content that is considered by other users as

rewarding or entertaining. Through literature studies, guidelines on karmabased

systems could not be found, which suggets that its has not

previously been investigated. This made it a relevant problem for this

report. The work has been carried out as a case study and used

documents and a questionnaire to answer the research questions. Through

data acquisition from both users of existing karma-based systems and a

comparison of these existing system, it has resulted in a number of

guidlines which are presented in this report.

Utredning om hur information kan omvandlas till en tjänst: med Emission Monitoring Tool som ett analysexempel2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Transports in society increase. IT-solutions give the ability to create systems to improve transportations, including reduction of their environmental impact. The area is known as ITS, intelligent transportation systems, or road informatics.Logica is an IT services company that has developed EMO; Emission Monitoring Tool. It is a system for measuring carbon emissions while driving and analyzing how eco-friendly the driver's driving habits are.Logica wants to investigate the possibility of what additional services that can be offered in the system, especially when linking the data the system gets from the vehicle with the road network through GPS-positioning, and the additional data available in the national road database, NVDB.Through a mapping of the EMO, my knowledge of the system increased. I have looked at the data that the system retrieves from the vehicle and studied the possibility to develop services with these data together with data from NVDB. My focus areas have been road safety, road conditions and emissions / environmental conditions. I have tried to relate it to theories on service development and the realization of these, with an emphasis on Web services. The results of the analysis have been five additional services. I have called them warning for speeding, warning for walking speed area, warning that animal fence ends, instruction to change gear and route proposal based on emissions. The first four are services that are activated during the journey, and are used either through a warning signal from the device in the vehicle or through a mobile application. The fifth service is a service that analyzes and proposes the route that gives the lowest amount of carbon dioxide emissions. My recommendation is that route proposal based on emissions is the service that should be developed, considering customer benefit and the system’s core service.
