    Abstract [en]

A risk is something that can happen and a problem is something that we know will happen or that has already happened. Security testing is used to evaluate a programs security using various methods and risk-based security testing is used to analyze, calculate and correct potential defects or problems in a system.Testing can be very costly and it is the most primary way of removing software defects. Many people focus their testing looking for correct behavior and not deviant behaviors in software, therefore security testing has not been as relevant in traditional testing. It is usually not possible to perform exhaustive testing on a system, instead you must selectively choose tests to conduct. How should the selection of tests be conducted? The study therefore intends to investigate how one can start working with risk-based security testing in development projects in order to prioritize and choose test cases and test methods. The study also aims to answer whether you can get any financial or practical benefits from working with risk-based security testing. To conduct the study a case study was used and to collect data, a document study was used to provide the opportunity to answer the questions. In order to analyze the collected data, a qualitative data analysis method has been used to explain and describe the content with a descriptive research approach. The results of the study provided an example of risk management with different steps one can take to start working on risk-based security testing in existing or new development projects. The study’s conclusion also shows that if you work with risk-based security testing there are practical benefits. For instance, higher quality of the system and economic benefits by finding defects or implementing countermeasures for possible risks at an early stage during the systems development.

    Abstract [en]

The interest for commitment and its effect on organizations is the cause of the study. The purpose is that through an increased understanding of the employees experienced grade of commitment and motivation, separate the factors that is the ground for a lower commitment, to provide possibilities for defining the factors that may improve it.

A highly qualified survey was conducted at a company within the manufacturing industry. All together 12 respondents have been interviewed – the MD, three managers and eight production workers. The three different levels of respondents have been analysed separately with relevant theory and then compared to study similarities and deviations between them. The analysis of the results shows that the commitment on the company is considered low and that the definition of commitment and motivation can have different meaning for the individuals. The lack of commitment derives from several factors – mostly in the experience of the "us" and "them" feeling in the company – and the lack of communication. In the discussion, solutions and problems that each level should consider to increase the commitment is analysed.

The result of the study is three different action plans addressed to each level, where concrete proposals and solutions are presented and serves as a base for an increased commitment. The foremost conclusion of the study is that the commitment must increase within the company and that the negative approach has to be reduced with the employees, as it has a negative effect on the daily work of the employees. The study also shows that an active participation and a commitment in the work place may lead to a more loyal, efficient and increased welfare of the personnel.

    Abstract [en]

As a social worker within the child and family unit in the municipal services are the work situations stressful. And the employment turnover is high in the group and affects the organization in a negative way. The purposes of the studies are to work out measures to create better conditions for the social workers in their daily work. Too do this is too find out how the social workers work situation are today and how we can improve the work situation.

The theories for the studies are based on; the work environment, psychosocial work environment, job satisfaction, leadership and change management.

The study is based on a case study in order to get a depth by getting their values and interpretations of the work situation; the study is based on qualitative inter-views. The selections are with 17social worker on children and the family unit in a smaller municipality within the corporation organization in Dalarna. The inter-views were conducted in late autumn and winter of 2014 in a room with every so-cial secretary at several occasions.

Results from the study indicate that the employment situation of social workers today is stressful. Employees have a need to be more involved in the decisions made within the organization and that the decisions are consistent. The employ-ment turnover is quit rate high and there are also others shortcomings for example the education in the introduction for the employer, and it needs to be more im-proved and structured. The head of the unit has a bad influence for the employees and create insecurity and a bad atmosphere in the group. The trust for the head of the unit is low. They should work more with direct communication and overlook the roles in the organization. A change needs to be considered with a focus on leadership, participation and community to create a better working environment for the social workers.

    Abstract [en]

Leadershipdevelopment through different types of programs has shown to be an advantageous investment to be highly competitive in the market (Njah, et al., 2021). There are those critics who says that investing in educational programs is costly and that it is unclear whether it actually has the desired effect in the organization (Culp et al., 2002). Ozcelik and Uyargil (2015) and Bos‐Nehles et al. (2013) believe that the studies that are carried out rarely pay attention to what is actually effective and develop the leadership. The purpose of this study is to create an understanding of the positive development of (individual) managers after participation in leadership development programs. To answer the purpose of this study, qualitative interviews were conducted to understand the positive development in relationship with the leadership development program. Studies show that a key factor for educational programs is their implementation (Ozcelik& Uyargil, 2015) and the implementation is dependent on communication (Jacobsen &Thorsvik, 2014). With the help of the tool AMO, it is possible to break down and gain an understanding of what affects the individual's performance (Appelbaum et al., 2000; Bos ‐Nehles et al., 2013; Boxall & Purcell, 2016; Ozcelik & Uyargil 2015). What thus is interesting to investigate is which mechanisms in the individual that are favorable for success and development in their leadership. The study's choice of method is qualitative with a hermeneutic interpretation and with inspiration from empirical phenomenology. The collection method has been semistructured interviews where ten managers within a organization have been interviewed. The study has interpreted the empirical material through an abductive approach. We perceive that this has contributed to managers' experience of whether their development can be traced to the development program varying. Success factors identified in this study are primarily linked to the individual's ability based on intrinsic motivation. Success factors identified in this study are at first hand linked to the individual's ability based on the inner motivation.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to create a deeper understanding of how leadership and the gender of the leader affects the individual's psychosocial work environment. The questions to be explained were: What does the desired outcome of leadership's impact on the psychosocial work environment look like? What is the impact of perceived/actual leadership on the psychosocial work environment? How is the gender of the leader perceived to affect the psychosocial work environment? The previous research shows that there is a certain connection between what characterizes male and female leadership in the form of transformative and transactional leadership. This is also something that can affect the psychosocial work environment, as transformative leadership is seen as the soft and associated with a female leadership, while the transactional is seen as a more authoritarian leadership and thus as a more male leadership. However, what emerged in the interviews in this study is that the respondents do not see leadership as male or female, but more that it depends on the type of leadership style that the leader exercises. This means that the respondents felt that both male and female leaders could use both transformative and transactional leadership and thus the psychosocial work environment was affected based on leadership style and not on the gender of the leader. The study was conducted by interviewing eight respondents, of whom five were employees and three were managers. One reason why the study's results differ from the previous research may be the choice of method and too few respondents.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this Bachelor’s essay was to investigate how managers perceive the safety climateand their role in the safety climate. The study takes on a quantitative approach where data hasbeen collected through eight semi-structured interviews. The result of this study shows that there are different perceptions of the safety climate concept, but supervisors agree that they play a significant role in the perceived safety climate in thestainless-steel industry. The results also indicate that supervisors have a similar way of workingwith the safety climate which is based on the systematic work environment management of theorganization. The study's theoretical framework explains that working with the safety climatealso require specific contributions in addition to the systematic work environment efforts. Thesupervisor´s role in the safety climate is to act as a role model with regards to the organization´sstandards. Supervisors describe that their role and work with the safety climate has developedwith the organizations increased prioritization of security. The results from the interviewscombined with theories in the studied area highlight that the collective safety attitude of thework group has a strong impact on the individual safety behavior. That is because the norms ofthe work group are considered stronger than the individual’s, which can generate both positiveand negative effects to the safety climate. The culture within the work groups can create asituation where risk blindness becomes normalized. It requires consistent work on the part ofthe organization and to carry out initiatives at both individual and group level to increase therisk awareness. The study also shows that it takes both short-term and long-term work with thesafety climate. Another aspect that can be deduced from the results is that employees apply amore safety-oriented behavior if they know that a supervisor is present. A conclusion from thestudy is that a weak safety climate can indicate that there are eye servants among the employees.Another conclusion is that to what level safety is prioritized by the organization is crucial forthe perceived safety climate.

“One for all and all for one” – Engaging TourismStakeholders for Collaborative Governance: A Case Study of the Mountain Destination Whistler(Canada)2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This master thesis examines how stakeholders can be engaged to join the emergingconcepts of collaborative governance in tourism destinations. Therefore, fundamentalrequirements, motivational factors and possible obstacles are analyzed. To go beyond thefindings of the in-depth literature research, the Canadian mountain resort Whistler is criticallyexamined. A comparison of official planning documents and three valuable stakeholders’experiences will reveal actual barriers, issues as well as opportunities of the case study. Theresults show that the most crucial and generalizable aspects to engage stakeholders incollaborative governance are trust building between government and stakeholders with the helpof mediators and a lowered hierarchy, education for shared understanding and a step-by-stepguideline which is understandable and precise. Further aspects such as transparentcommunication, monitoring for flexibility and the overall empowerment for stakeholdersatisfaction and commitment are more aspects, which support stakeholder engagement. For thefuture, this research can be used as inspiration, guidance and even benchmarking analysis ofother destination to make a complex and abstract concept more understandable and applycollaborative governance.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to describe how a systematic work environmental management can be conducted effectively to contribute to a good work environment. Prior research enhances the importance of leadership and the necessity of involving the co-workers in the work environmental management. Research also shows that the hard and technical parts are often prioritized before the psychosocial part. The empirical material was gathered through a mixed method consisting of interviews of a focus group and a survey on a corporation in Sweden.

The result shows that respondents raise several different parts as important in order to conduct effective systematic work environmental management. The study gave the conclusions that systematic work environmental management can be conducted effectively if there is a thought-through plan and commitment where all parts of the work environment are covered and taken with importance. It has been shown that the psychosocial work environment is more difficult to treat than the physical environment. Leadership is a part that has shown to be of importance on how the work environmental management will succeed and that the economic aspect is regarded as important for an effective systematic work environmental management.

    Abstract [en]

The effects of Kanban in software development teams: a study of the implementation at Sandvik2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

In software development organizations there is sometimes a need for change. In order to meet continuously increasing demands from their customers, Sandvik IT Services- SITS, at Sandvik in Sweden, required improving the way they worked with software development. Due to issues like a lot of work in progress and lot of simultaneous tasks for individuals in the teams that caused stress, it was almost impossible to address the question of working with improvements. In order to enable the improvement process Kanban was introduced in the software development teams. Kanban for software development is a change method created by David J. Anderson. The purpose of this thesis is twofold. One part is to assess what effects Kanban has had on the software development teams. The other part is to make a documentation of the Kanban implementation process at SITS. The documentation has been made on the basis of both company internal resources and observations of the Kanban implementation process. The effects of Kanban have been researched with an interview survey to the teams that have gone through the Kick start of the Kanban process. The result of the thesis is also twofold. One part of the result is an extensive documentation of the implementation process of Kanban at SITS. The other part is an assessment of the effects that Kanban has had at SITS. The major effects have been that the teams are experiencing less stress, more focus on quality and better customer collaboration. It is also evident is that it takes time for some effects to evolve when implementing Kanban

Kvinnor i socialdemokratiska valfilmer: En undersökning av gestaltningen av kvinnofrågor och kvinnors roll i socialdemokratiska valfilmer under andra världskriget2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate how male-dominated organizations view the potential of combining competency-based recruitment and employer branding in recruitment efforts to attract more women. To answer the purpose of the study, a qualitative method was chosen in which six semi-structured interviews were conducted within two different maledominated organizations, one of which is active in the construction industry and the other in the automotive industry. The interviews were conducted with recruiters, employer branding managers, as well as HR manager and Head of Gender Equality and Diversity. The findings from the conducted interviews indicate that in terms of increasing gender equality in a male-dominated organization, respondents experience both opportunities and challenges when using a competency-based recruitment strategy and employer branding. The interviews also identified that the competency-based recruitment strategy is considered to be the key increating a non-discriminatory recruitment process. However, there was evidence that for moving towards a gender equal workplace these strategies were proven to be insufficient and required additional development. The study proposes employer branding as an important part for attracting and recruiting more women into a male-dominated industry. Nevertheless, it is a challenge to attract female talent despite a well-established employer brand.

Personalomsättning i kunskapsorganisationer: Anställda som utövar självledarskap och hur de kan påverka sitt arbetes motivationspotential2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Background:

At present, one out of four Swedes aged 25 to 64 have a higher education. Educated employees are one of the characteristics of a knowledge-based organization. Knowledge-based organization are dependent of these employees because these organizations use knowledge as their biggest competitiveness. High turnover is therefore a bigger problem for knowledge-based organization, due to the valuable knowledge disappearing from the organization. Employees in knowledge-based organization often work independently due to their cutting-edge expertise in their competence. In the employees’ work, there are some characteristics that must be fulfilled, to make employees satisfied with their work and not quit. These characteristics are described in a part of Hackman and Oldhams Job Characteristics Model called Motivating Potential Score.

    Purpose:

The purpose of this study has been to identify self-leadership among employees at a Swedish knowledge-based organization and discuss how the employees might influence their work’s Motivating Potential Score (MPS). We also want to discuss what the employees possible influence on MPS means for the results; high job satisfaction and low turnover in JCM, as well as what this can mean for the knowledge-based organization.

    Frame of reference:

This study draws from theories which describe self-leadership, knowledge organizations, job satisfaction and turnover using the Job Characteristics Model by Hackman and Oldham.

    Method:

The study adopts a qualitative methodological approach. Our empirical material has been collected using qualitative interviews.

    Discussion:

Employees might have an influence on the characteristics in their work’s motivational potential score which is a part of the Job Characteristics Model. The fulfillment of the characteristics in MPS is a precondition for achieving results such as a high level of job satisfaction and a low turnover within JCM, which then could mean that our respondents can influence one of the components necessary for achieving results.

Hur kan rehabiliteringsarbete förbättras?: En studie av en kommuns rehabiliteringsarbete i syfte att kartlägga interna förbättringsmöjligheter.2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The master thesis is based on a municipality whose sickness absence statistics are among the highest in the country. We have had the opportunity to investigate whether the municipality's managers work according to established policy in rehabilitation cases, as well as the attitude towards this and what they consider missing. We have also studied which factors have a positive impact on the rehabilitation process.

The theory is based on factors that, according to research, have shown a positive impact on long-term sick leave, such as job adaptation, early return in work and social contact between employers and employee on sick leave. The method has primarily been based on a quantitative approach, we used surveys to collect material. At the same time there are qualitative features when the material is analysed both qualitative and quantitative.

The results show that managers largely know and work according to the municipality´s policy. The managers also show a positive attitude to offer employees changes that mean a faster return to work, but also realize that there may be limitations in both the work´s nature and the municipality's resources. The conclusion shows that the municipality has several possibilities for change in order to improve their rehabilitation efforts to improve the opportunities for employees to return to work faster. One suggestion is to train their managers in presented factors that have a positive impact on rehabilitation.

    Abstract [en]

The study aimed to create a deeper understanding of what Generation Z finds attractive in an employer and how a smaller municipality uses its employer brand to attract Generation Z. To achieve the aim a smaller municipality and its HR staff were studied about the work to attract new employees. Furthermore, selected respondents from Generation Z were studied to better understand their view of an employer. In conclusion, the study aimed to bring together the two different perspectives and analyze this with the support of previous research. To be able to answer the purpose and create a deeper understanding, a qualitative method was chosen. The experience was collected through individual semi-structured interviews with respondents from the two target groups, Generation Z and HR employees.

The results show that the municipality possesses factors that are considered attractive according to Generation Z, such as security, a friendly organizational culture, and a good reputation. The empirical evidence shows differences in what Generation Z demands and what the HR employees consider important, the difference indicates that there is a lack of knowledge about the target group among the HR employees. Furthermore, it is noted that the municipality does not have a structured way of working with its employer brand, and the results indicate that the HR employees rely on the municipality's good reputation, stable economy, and beautiful nature, and that they, therefore, do not consider themselves to need a strategy for the employerbrand. The conclusion shows that the municipality has several factors that they can focus on marketing to attract Generation Z. The result shows that it is important for a smaller municipality to have a clear strategy to successfully work with its employer brand where the focus should be on understanding the target group and to work segmented to reach Generation Z. Furthermore, the results indicate that the municipality needs to look at the employer brand separately from the municipality's brand, to successfully market itself as an employer.

    Abstract [en]

Physical activity is becoming an increasingly important topic in terms of physical and mental well-being. As more workplaces become sedentary and workloads increase, it becomes a relevant issue for promoting a sustainable and healthy workforce. Organizations that encourage physical activity are characterized by lower absenteeism and more productive, motivated, and happy employees. It is therefore to the advantage of organizations to obtain wellness initiatives that enable employees to priorities their health, both mental and physical. However, many organizations find that there is a difficulty in motivating and including all employees to use the wellness initiatives offered. The challenge lies in attracting those employees who do not find any interest in an active lifestyle. This qualitative study therefore aims to investigate how employer representatives with responsibility for wellness work feel that they can provide wellness initiatives that motivate employees and contribute to a good working environment. To investigate this, eight semi-structured interviews were conducted with employer representatives from different organizations. Then, an inductive thematic analysis has been applied as a method to analyze the obtained results. The results of the study show that balance and recovery are important factors for employees to maintain and cope in both private and working life. For this to be possible, wellness becomes an important part, as it encourages employees to set aside time for health. Physical and mental well-being is the basis for sustainable employees, which has been shown to promote a good working environment, as they tend to be more productive, motivated, less stressed, and more satisfied in everyday life. We have also identified that a good work environment is promoted by joint activities as it increases the sense of belonging, well-being, and good relations in the work group. Combining joint activities with bonus-based competitions has proved to be a way of including and motivating more employees to use the wellness program. This is combined with individual wellness initiatives to provide alternatives for employees who prefer to be active on their own.

“Det här är något som man inte ger upp”: En kvalitativ studie om den psykosociala arbetsmiljön inom förlossningsvården i Sverige utifrån ett kall-perspektiv2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Essay aims was to examine how leaders handle situations where the employee's personal problems have a negative impact on the work of both the employer and other employees. To get an answer to that, we have been inspired by the vignette study based on discussions of fictional cases. We have, through continued study with four individual semi-structured interviews and a focus groups interview where we first introduced the respondent theme with the vignettes. Participants for the study were selected by a judgmental sample where we focused ourselves on leaders, about which organization they belonged to was of minor importance. In the theoretical part introduces the theories of leadership, teamwork, the individual in the group, finances, health, laws organizational culture and regulations and social insurance role. The results are then analyzed against the theories and we can conclude that the respondent theme generally believe that it is important to prioritize communication and relationships. It is significant that the relations established before problems arise because it is considered difficult to form relationships in conflicted situations. Time is important when handling problems of the cause to the limit of what is acceptable is moved with the passage of time. Depending on the problem varied degree of tolerance level of managers and other employees in our survey. The results showed that the limit for private life's influence on the world of work is when the work will be mismanaged and when customers and other employees are affected. From a gender perspective, respondents felt that the missing matter whether the manager was a man or woman when it came to dealing with the problems that arose, it was considered to be private.

    Abstract [en]

Threats and violence at work are an increasingly widespread work environmentproblem in Sweden. This affects many professions but especially police officersand other emergency professions. This problem risks causing stress that negativelyaffects the police officers' health. The aim of the present study is to increaseunderstanding of police officers' experiences of stress and what measures arestress- reducing in a professional group exposed to recurring threats and violenceat work. A qualitative study was conducted of eight semi-structured interviewswith police officers in Stockholm. The analysis was performed with an interpretivephenomenological analysis (IPA) originating in health psychology. The IPAmethod has a structured way of thematizing responses out of many humanexperiences. The analysis confirms that all respondents were exposed to threatsand violence at work. They experience useful positive stress, as well as acuterecurring and chronic stress at work but they also express a lack of time andprioritization of mental training and reflection for stress management. The policedealt with stress primarily through conversational support with their colleagues, visualization and target image training and taking time for workout and recovery athome and to some extent their own reflection. From the organization, they mostlyreceived support with crisis management teams after emergency events.

    Abstract [sv]

varandra i utvecklingssamtalet.

Den offentliga sektorns komplexa adaptiva system: En kvalitativ studie om medarbetarpolicys i praktiken2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The significance of how Human Resources, HR, and management can cooperatively effect the behavioural pattern of co-workers and the social structure within organizations originated this study. With the perspective of complex adaptive systems as the starting point, the purpose has been to establish the requirements for co-workers to implement the organizations’ vison and policies in practice. In cooperation with the contacts of the studied municipality, I made an in-depth study within a public organization to explain the bureaucracy's effect on the behaviour pattern of the co-workers and how they together create a social strucutre reflecting the organization's vision.

The purpose with the study is to examine how the complex adaptive systems functions within a bureaucratic organization and its effect on co-workers’ possibilities to implement the vision and policy of the organization. The study was made within a social welfare service in a municipality in Middle Sweden, using a qualitative method and semi structured interviews six respondents have participated, all with different positions in the organization contributing to several perspective of the same phenomena.

The results of the study points to the public sector’s bureaucratic organization structure conduces’ of the creating different adaptive systems within the organization where co-workers’ behaviour pattern create a social structure which leads to failure of implementing the vision and policy. The study also presents that the adaptive systems within the organization does not affect each other as they do not interact with each other in the organization. The basis of how co-workers’ behaviour pattern establishes within the organization is the demands from the surrounding world, high workload, and of the lack of stability in the organizational and social working environment and not as the previous research have showed; that high ruling would underlie to behavioural pattern within the public sector.

In conclusion, for co-workers to implement the vision and policy of the organization it requires for HR, management and co-workers all are in the same adaptive systems. To make that possible HR needs to form strategies on how all within the organization will interact with each other in daily work. Management and co-workers also needs great possibilities to communicate with each other regularly to an increasing extent. Concrete proceedings for how this should be done most suitably is presented in the discussion.

    Abstract [en]

This study is based on a systematic work environment education called Suntarbetsliv, which is a joint education for managers and safety representatives. The starting point for our study is that there is a need for more understanding of an educational initiative and its possibilities. The purpose of this study is to investigate how a manager and safety representative in a public organization works after a common work environment education and on education generated in collective learning.

In the theory's theory we present the following key points: work environment, education and collective learning.

The method in the study is based on a qualitative method. We have conducted semistructured interviews with three managers and three security representatives in a municipal in Dalarna, Sweden.

As a result, a common base for managers and security representatives creates the prerequisite for collective learning on the organization's activities.

The conclusions taken are based on the results analysis and are that the willingness to learn starts within ourselves, and therefore, organizational goals must be clear and concrete so that

Human Recources Shared Service Center ur ett användarperspektiv: En kvalitativ studie avseende första linjens chefers erfarenheter av HR-Direkt.2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to explore how a HR Shared Service Center operates from a user perspective within the public sector. The focus is to explore the experience of Line Managers using Region Dalarna´s equivalent to a HR Shared Service Center, called HR-Direkt. Based on the study´s theoretical frame of reference, SSC is one of three functions that will contribute to the streamlining HR activites as part of a HR transformation programme as outlined by Ulrich. Other parts of the HR transformation are units of expertise and Human Resources Business Partner. HR transformation is the core of centralized HR work where the focus is cost reduction and thus compatible with public sector tax-financed function. It can be argued that the HR transformation has a great significance for the efficiency of both personnel work and the organization both directly and indirectly. The results have shown that line managers experiences concerning the Regions HR-SSC are in direct correlation with the line managers relationship with Human Resources Business Partner. The respondents who have a good relationship with their HRBP also have a good experience of HR-Direkt while respondents who have less favourable relationship with their HRBP are dissatisfied with HR-Direkt. Furthermore, the results show that an unclear distribution of responsibilities between HRBP and HR-Direkt causes dissatisfaction with the whole HR function among Line Managers. The study was based on a qualitative approach where nine semi-structured interviews with line managers, HRBP and the HR manager from Region Dalarna were conducted. The results from the interviews were then compared with the previous research using several forms of analysis before a discussion and conclusion are presented. The believe is that existing research tends to focus on organizational aspects of the benefits of an SSC, such as financial gain through streamlined work. The aim of this paper is to be able to demonstrate that more research should be directed at users of SSC in the HR field and that this study can fill part of the knowledge gap regarding users’ experiences of an SSC.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationships between the parties during a restructuring process. The aim is also to examine the closure process and where laws and agreements entering into it.

The essay frame of reference addresses the closure processes of Rydell (2015) and Wigblad & Österberg (2009), the Swedish model of laws and agreements Elvander (1995) Iseskog (2014) trust and negotiation Fischer et al. (1992) and Walter & McKersie (1991). With the help of these concepts and models are analysed and interpreted the relationships in a closure process of a production line at SSAB in Borlänge, where 210 employees where given notices in the beginning of 2015. Of them 170 where blue-collar workers.

The closure process could then be carried out, with the help of a flexicurity agreement (ToF), result of study without any staff lost their jobs.

The study is based on qualitative research with semi-structured expert interviews with a total of five respondents from SSAB and If Metall. These respondents were key players during the closure process and the negotiation process.

The interviews have been analysed and thematizing on the basis of the frame of reference. The results of the study show that good relations between the parties provides easier negotiation with good results. Collusion between the parties based on a time growing mutual confidence. That confidence is important for that cooperation to be a reality.

    Abstract [en]

This chapter develops a theory of sustainable enterprises, sustainable enterprise theory (SET), which can only be a valid theory if knowledge about life and nature is complete. Knowledge limitations should not stop enterprises from doing business with a goal of better long-term life on earth. Life demands stewardship of the resources used during one’s lifetime. This chapter develops a model influenced by enterprise theory and resource theory that includes more than money in the business activities of an enterprise. The SET model is used in analyses of accountability, management and in discussions about sustainable business organizations activities.

A room of our own: A collective biography of an exercise in interdisciplinary feminism2011In: Normalization and “outsiderhood”: Feminist Readings of a Neoliberal Welfare State. / [ed] Siv Fahlgren, Anders Johansson & Diana Mulinari, UAE: Bentham eBooks , 2011, p. 106-116Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Abstract: The interdisciplinary research project “Challenging gender” was a joint effort by members of two Swedish universities. Researchers were grouped by five different themes, while together they became “the Arena”. The present authors’ theme focused on normalization processes, and included gender researchers from literary studies, sociology, social work, and public health studies. The purpose of this chapter is to explore what it is to challenge normalization processes as researchers; the context is interdisciplinary gender research under a neo-liberal regime. To deepen their understanding of what the process has occasioned, the researchers used “collective biography”, a memory-work method developed by Bronwyn Davies, who led the researchers’ work of writing down their memories prompted by experience of striations and of lines of flight. In this chapter the memories so produced are discussed in the light of Virginia Woolf’s A room of one’s own.  Thanks to the financial resources the project was able to muster, we were able to create the kind of collective “room” where we could take the opportunity to be creative and challenge structural patterns – but equally where we could give vent to our frustration at these same patterns. Our memories seemed to waver between fragile but uplifting flashes of optimism and a feeling that nothing would work, and not only just the one or the other – always somewhere in between. Our theoretical understanding of normality grew out of that most dangerous of ideas: that we should open our minds to the unpredictable, the non-normalizing, to whatever could be different

    Abstract [sv]

Johanna Niemi gör i kapitel 1: "All the Adults in the Noisy Village: Constructions of Post-Modern Identity in the Welfare State in the Millennium Trilogy", en spännande läsning av Sverige med ett perspektiv lite från sidan, det vill säga från grannlandet Finland.

I kapitel 4, "Lilla syster ser dig! Pippi Långstrump, Lisbeth Salander och andra Pippi-karaktärer", analyserar Eva Söderberg hur Larsson har skapat Lisbeth Salander i relation till Lindgrens barnbokshjältinna Pippi Långstrump. Som en stark och mystisk litterär figur har Lisbeth Salander provocerat till en mängd mer eller mindre fantasifulla tolkningar. I kapitel 5, "Salanders teorem.

An analytical framework for sustainable tourism pedagogy: reflections from Sweden2020In: Research Symposium on Sustainability Day, Dalarna University, Falun, Sweden, December 10 2020, 2020Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Tourism education has matured from vocational to more liberal education while current trends underline the importance of critical studies and the shift of curricula to more action-oriented forms of education with the community on focus. In parallel to the developments in tourism education, debates in pedagogy have discussed the role of education for citizenship to prepare“citizens of a complex and interlocking world” (Nussbaum 2002, p. 292). In spite of the proliferating number of relevant publications and of programme offer in tourism, little change can be noticed in tourism curricula while very little is still known about tourism education outside the Anglo-Saxon world. This research employs an autoethnography approach to analyse a master programme in tourism in Sweden. The aim is to highlight issues of importance and relevance for sustainable tourism pedagogy. It draws from discourses in tourism education, education for sustainability, critical studies, and education for citizenship to operationalise an analytical framework regarding tourism education. This framework is used to reflect on a master programme offered in Sweden and the expressions that pedagogy for sustainable tourism can take in specific contexts. Findings indicate that a number of qualities of Education for Sustainability can be found in the master programme including critical analysis and reflectivity, linking theory to practice and experiential learning methods, evolving dynamic learning, self-reflectivity over one’s own learning and peer feedback, multiple stakeholders’ approach, divergent cultural understandings, or understanding of power dimensions. Learning as a transformative experience is embedded into the programme trying to enable students to develop their own understandings of tourism and sustainability. Although the curriculum addresses all four dimensions of the analytical framework, more work can be done to strengthen parts of it, especially the need for civil, liberal action. Higher education in Sweden including, tourism education, has remained at a more reflective liberal space advocating for critical analysis skills and individual abilities to perform certain tasks. It is suggested here that tourism education needs to embrace and move towards liberal action and incorporate social learning and community service in more transformational approaches to education for sustainability.

Climate change and sustainable tourism in the new normal2021In: Tourism 21: Re-building Tourism – Continuities and Changes, 2021Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The world is experiencing an unpresented health, social, and economic crisis situation with tourism reported to be one of the most severely hit sectors (UNWTO, 2020). COVID-19 pandemic is often discussed as an imposed pause of humanity’s frantic growth and an opportunity to reflect on our choices and future paths, an invitation to tourists and the industry to reconsider their options and adopt more sustainable practices in the after COVID-19 era (Gretzel et al., 2020; Ioannides and Gyimóthy, 2020) a view shared also by UNWTO claiming that “sustainability should be the new normal” in the after covid era (https://www.unwto.org/covid-19-oneplanet-responsible-recovery).. COVID-19 crisis although reduced or even eliminated tourism and travel opportunities for certain periods, it has also contributed to the first in history reduction in greenhouse gas emissions related to reduced travels and industrial production (Gössling et al., 2020).  As the world is now focusing in mitigating the adverse impacts of the pandemic and bringing economy and tourism ‘back to business’, there are also alarming voices that measures taken in the pressure of emergency to combat economic recession from COVID-19 should not contradict or jeopardise with long-term sustainability goals and SDGs should not be overlooked or neglected (Hall et al., 2020).  Besides the problems created, crises can be a disruption leading to innovations. It is a period of transition and innovation to combat a rapid crisis such as the pandemic while some of these actions and innovations, if adjusted adequately, can be useful in the long run to combat the less visible slow crisis like climate change and other sustainability challenges. In this research we look on knowledge and experience generated during the pandemic crisis to attain a more sustainable development of tourism now but very importantly in the “new normal” after the crisis. We look onto how companies in Dalarna and Gotland have responded to the pandemic so far and how they work with sustainability and climate change. In this presentation I want to explore the idea of cocreating knowledge with companies. How can we engage companies? What is relevant research for them? How can we help them towards a transformational approach to embrace sustainability?

Exploring the nexus between sustainable tourism governance, resilience and complexity research2023In: Tourism Recreation Resarch, ISSN 0250-8281, E-ISSN 2320-0308, Vol. 48, no 3, p. 352-367Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Governance and complexity have increasingly become subjects of interest within research on sustainable tourism. Governance has been marked by a turn to more corporatist and networked policymaking structures. At the same time, the use of the concept of complexity in research on tourism destinations and governance is gaining momentum in an effort to address the links in increasingly networked systems as well as the interrelatedness of the multiple features of a tourist destination. Meanwhile, resilience has emerged as a new buzzword in research on sustainable development and governance which denotes the ability of a destination to cope with and adapt to change. This article reviews the literature on destination governance to identify critical issues and trends and discusses the relevance of complexity approaches. Evolutionary studies and research on resilience in a sustainability context are becoming part of this discussion. The review sheds light on the limitations and merits of each of these concepts, as well as on their nexus. The article concludes with some key areas for future research on destination governance. The aim of the review is to contribute to conceptual clarity and to advance the application of complexity approaches in research on destination governance.

Pedagogy for sustainable tourism: reflections on the curriculum space of a master programme in Sweden2022In: Journal of Teaching in Travel & Tourism, ISSN 1531-3220, E-ISSN 1531-3239, Vol. 22, no 1Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Tourism education has matured from vocational to more liberal education while current trends underline the importance of critical studies and the shift of curricula to more action-oriented forms of education and citizenship education. However, a gap can be noticed between theory and practice in the development of pedagogy for sustainable tourism. The research reported here draws from debates in tourism education, education for sustainability, critical studies, and education for citizenship to develop a conceptual framework for pedagogy for sustainable tourism. This framework is used to reflect on the curriculum space of a master programme in tourism in Sweden in an analytic autoethnographic approach. The analysis indicates that the master programme addresses several aspects of the reflective vocational and reflective liberal curriculum space. It would also benefit from the integration of more experiential, action-oriented learning to strengthen the communal understanding of civil action and education for citizenship. This research contributes to the conceptualisation of the curriculum space for sustainable tourism. Such efforts are considered especially important in acknowledging the complex, dynamic character of tourism higher education. The aim is to invite a dialogue about the reform and evolution of tourism education to meet the needs for a sustainable future.

Sustainable tourism in the new normal: learning from covid experience2021Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

COVID-19 pandemic is often discussed as an imposed pause of humanity’s frantic growth and an opportunity to reflect on our choices and future paths (Gretzel et al., 2020; Ioannides and Gyimóthy, 2020. As the world is now focusing in mitigating the adverse impacts of the pandemic and bringing economy and tourism ‘back to business’, measures taken in the pressure of emergency to combat economic recession from COVID-19,  sustainability goals should not be overlooked or neglected (Hall et al., 2020).  At the same time, it is a period of transition and innovation; crises can be a disruption leading to innovations. This research develops around a new project funded by Tillväxtverket which focuses on eliciting the knowledge and the experience generated during the pandemic crisis to attain a more sustainable development of tourism in the “new normal” after the crisis. During the presentation, an overview of the project will be given and some preliminary results from interviews with companies in Dalarna and Gotland will be presented. We look onto how companies have responded to the pandemic so far and how they work with sustainability and climate change. The aim is to better understand vulnerability and resilience among tourism companies and contribute to a more sustainable tourism in the new normal. In this project we undertake a transformative approach which acknowledges the presence of diverse interests and tensions and which employs collaborative and disruptive methods to work with. It also integrates a transformative approach in analysing and discussing the preliminary results and the role of companies in climate change and sustainability in the new normal. Transformative approaches thus are integrated in the ontological as well as epistemological foundations of this research. Very importantly, methodologically we work with collaborative disruptive methods to trigger transformation in the system and enable a discussion with stakeholders around systemic changes in our understandings of development, vulnerability, climate change and sustainability

    Abstract [en]

The municipals care for the elderly has a high level of sick leave among the employees, this creates work environment problems for the unit managers who finds this difficult to deal with. The purpose of this study is to create an understanding of unit managers' conditions for managing sick leave within municipal care for the elderly. Previous research is limited concerning unit managers' conditions for managing sickness absence. Politicians as employers have the legal responsibility and must direct the business to promote a good organizational, social and physical working environment. If there are insufficiencies in the work environment and conditions for managers', it will impact the entire organization. This study has been carried out with a qualitative approach with ten unit managers from two selected municipalities and combines theories about organizational conditions from an employee perspective. The empirical data has been collected by using semi-structured interviews that were conducted digitally via Zoom. The stories from the interviews have been analyzed and compiled througha thematic analysis. The result shows that the unit managers are limited in the management regarding sick leave due to organizational conditions in terms of both the demands made and the resources allocated. This study contributes with an understanding of what organizational conditions mean for unit managers' ability to manage sick leave in municipal care for the elderly. The study also shows that the employee is important for unit managers' conditions for managing sick leave.

Sustainable recreational trails in Sweden: Is it possible to talk about ROI for hiking trail investments?2022Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Spending time in nature is becoming increasingly popular in Sweden, as in many other countries, following the pandemic. In the Swedish context, the issue of funding investments and regular maintenance of recreational trails in nature is a challenge given the Allemansrätten (public access to private land), which hinders the closing of land and charging of entrance fees. Still, high-quality trails are demanded to serve as a driver for attracting visitors to destinations.

This report looks into aspects that are relevant for a discussion on return on investment (ROI) for investments in trails, and especially hiking trails. The first section offers an outlook to a few international cases that discuss access and funding types for hiking trails. Another section uses a mini-case to evaluate a few larger trail networks in relation to guidelines for the Swedish national framework for hiking trails.

This report highlights that people’s use of trails bring a number of benefits to society, mainly economic, environmental, and public health benefits. The economic benefits originate from spending by the visitors and direct investments during construction of trails, while environmental benefits come from reduced CO2 emissions and the public health benefits derive from reductions in health care spendings. Finally, quality of life and happiness values arise from the increased relationship between individuals and nature and social aspects.

The report notes that a proper evaluation of ROI for trails can be conducted, with consideration of the many loopholes. The benefit side incorporates such needs as considering visitors’ potential multiple purpose of trips and how to properly value and include the non-monetary effects coming from improved health, interaction with nature, and socializing with other people. Finally, the report discusses the benefits of trail use in relation to the fulfillment of the United Nations’ sustainable development goals (SDGs). We find that investments would contribute to decent work for all and sustainable economic growth, as well as a reduction in inequalities.

A key point to emerge from this report is that, to properly use ROI for trail investments in practice, there is a need to further analyze the economic impact of hiking trail users in Sweden.

Attrahera och behålla personal i en säsongsbetonad bransch: Employer brand i ett resebolag2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study has been to investigate what factors are crucial for attracting and retaining individuals at a travel company. To respond to our purpose, we have used three questions: Why do individuals apply to the company? What causes the individuals to stay? What can the company do to attract and make staff stay longer? To answer the questions and achieve the purpose, we have used a hermeneutic approach where we combine a survey with a qualitative interview. The survey analyzes the factors that employees perceived as most significant when they applied for the company. The interview with the company's HR-employee was used to obtain background information about the company's work with employer brand.

Data shows that the number of applications has decreased significantly under the last three years. Retaining staff for a longer period has proved to be a major challenge and there are several factors that are contributing to employee turnover. One reason is that staff start comparing salary and working hours with companies in their home countries. The result shows that individuals are attracted to the symbolic attributes which the company advertises such as seeing the world and meeting new people. The result gives indications that the company must become even clearer and talk more about what’s included in the contract. That way, the staff might feel satisfied with their employment.

Framgångsfaktorer för inkludering i en hybrid arbetsmodell: En kvalitativ studie om upplevelsen av inkludering och ledarskapets betydelse2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine recruiters' experiences of conducting job interviews via video interviews compared to physical interviews. Previous research shows that recruiters prefer the physical interviews as they feel that they get a clearer overall picture of the candidate. Research also shows that recruiters find it easier to convey non-verbal communication as well as emotions during physical interviews. To answer the purpose, a qualitative method in the form of nine semi-structured interviews was conducted with recruiters and consulting managers in the staffing industry. In this study, we have included respondents who have both experience of conducting job interviews via video interviews and physical interviews. The results show that the majority of respondents prefer to conduct physical interviews. As they find it easier to communicate with the candidates and perceive emotions, gestures and facial expressions. Furthermore, it appears that the majority of the respondents experience the video interviews more flexible and time-efficient, since both the candidate and the respondent himself are not dependent on a physical location. The empirical result from the interviews is then compared with the theoretical framework in the analysis, after which a concluding discussion and conclusion are presented. Overall, the study contributes to an increased understanding of recruiters' experiences of conducting job interviews physically compared to digital video interviews. The study also identifies advantages and disadvantages that respondents experience in the different formats of job interviews. We believe this contributes to an increased understanding regarding the choice of interview format for the specific job interview from the recruiter's perspective.

“Vi mot världen”: En kvalitativ studie om fenomenet socialt stöd hos poliser i yttre tjänst2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this bachelor's thesis is to investigate the importance of the phenomenon of social support among police officers in the external service. The researchers for the paper have used a qualitative method and through eight semi-structured interviews have taken note of the police officers' thoughts, opinions and reasoning about the phenomenon. Social support can manifest itself in the feeling of being involved, appreciated, cared for and loved. The support has a positive impact on how the individual handles and processes events in order to reduce the risk of anxiety, stress, depression and coronary artery diseases. This study has shown that the support of colleagues was an important factor in being able to carry out and deal with the pressures of the police profession. To answer the purpose, the following questions were used: What does social support mean? What does social support contribute to? How is social support being created? The officers interviewed described the importance of social assistance and was particularly important for those working in external service. The polices view was that they needed a closer relationship with their colleagues than they had experienced in other industries. This was based on the situations they faced in the performance of their duties. Social support was therefore considered invaluable as it reduced the risk of mental illness and contributed to strong cohesion and community. Cohesion and community were founded in the culture created within the police and were considered to promote the strength of belonging. According to the police, the support was built up through the close and regular work, when together they were subjected to many different events and situations. The police explained that the stronger the support the closer they had to each other. Similar experiences and understanding of the profession manifested themselves in a strong esprit de corps and the feeling that it was those against the world. The support was often unspoken and based on trust, as well as an invaluable friendship. The support was demonstrated, among other things, by a genuine interest in each other's well being. The strong community and social support within the police force help them manage situations that they would not be able to cope with alone. The hope is that this paper can be an inspiration to employers and human resources scientists who strive for a prosperous staff.

    Abstract [en]

"I think most of it are will, if you want enough then you can always learn" - A qualitative study on the conditions of knowledge sharing in the Swedish manufacturing industry. Our bachelor's thesis aims to contribute with increased knowledge and understanding about the conditions and obstacles that affect the knowledge sharing process.  The theoretical frame of reference of the study is based on theories and previous research regarding knowledge as a concepts, conditions and factors that influence knowledge sharing and Knowledge Management. The theoretical frame of reference has been developed and revised during the study based on the empirical material similar to the abductive approach. The method of the study was of a qualitative nature with semi-structured interviews as a method of data-collection in which six (6) out of eleven (11) respondents from a department in the studied organization participated.  The results of the study show that organizational conditions, relationships, and organizational culture have a strong impact on the ability to share knowledge and in cases where the conditions are not favorable, the process is significantly hindered. The study shows that knowledge sharing is strongly influenced by social factors linked to employees' relationships and that the interpersonal context is of central importance. Furthermore, it emerges that the absence of Knowledge Management is a clear barrier to knowledge sharing, which highlights the need for knowledge sharing to be led through active Knowledge Management.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The municipality is a large employer and the activities within the municipal home care servicealso affect many people who encounter employees within the home care service in the role ofcare recipient. To fulfill the organization's goal that good nursing should be conducted; researchhas previously mostly focused on the importance of a successful leader. In recent times, theimportance of followers for both organization and leadership has also been highlighted.

The theory of Leader-Member Exchange is about the relationship between leader and followerand the exchange that takes place there. The leader values the follower's contribution to theexchange in the relationship based on his general notions of followers, also called ImplicitFollowership Theories. Previous research has shown that if these general perceptions of theleader are of a positive nature, it increases the leader's expectations of the follower and canimprove the relationship. The purpose of our survey is to investigate how leaders in themunicipal home care service view followers and whether they feel that the followers affecttheir ability to lead.

Semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis form the basis for this study, which wasconducted in a management group within municipal home care. The results initially describethe participants' perception of the concept of following and what characteristics and behaviorsare included in their general perception of followers. Furthermore, the results of the surveydescribe how the participants perceive their actual followers and that their general expectationsof followers do not fully correspond to the actual followership. Finally, the survey clearlyshows that following has an impact on the conditions for leading.
