French Online Learning: a Gerontological Perspective

To adapt to older students, we conducted a study consisting of a perception test and a survey related to French taught online at our university. The purpose of this study was to see how oral perception, comprehension and communication work in online synchronous seminars. The results were positive. The comprehension of French sounds online works quite well for our learners regardless of their age, and the students themselves find that perception and oral comprehension during synchronous online seminars works well. In addition, no respondent found that cooperation across ages was a problem.

Le Grand Meaulnes et la Princesse de Clèves: Etude sur le thème de l'amour et la passion impossibles2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [un]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay is to study the etymologic origin of some slang words that began came into usage during the twentieth century.

100 words have been chosen and they are presented according to their origin. The words have been chosen from Le dictionnaire de l’argot et du français populaire. The most frequent languages of origin represented within these 100 words have been studied in order to investigate the possible reasons these words may have been assimilated into the French language.

Most of the words were divided into lexical fields to determine if there is a certain type of word that is being borrowed and if different languages contribute to different lexical fields.

This study has shown us that many different languages have contributed to the French language; the languages that have contributed the most are English and Arabic. This paper discusses the probable explanations of why the words have been borrowed.

La représentation du personnage de Victoire dans Victoire, les saveurs et les mots de Maryse Condé2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The way the character Victoire in the novel

Victoire : my mother’s mother is represented and what makes her complex and enigmatic is the purpose of this study. In this novel, Maryse Condé writes about her grandmother whom she has never met. Since early childhood she has decided to document herself about Victoire Quidal and to write a book about her. The method used in the thesis is double, one method is narratological and the other one is biographical. The narrator switches between different points of view on Victoire, she is sometimes seen from an external point of view by the society, which is very critical, she is also seen internally which gives a very different vision of the character. The character is also seen through other characters, such as her daughter Jeanne. The aim of this thesis is to show Victoire’s personality, to describe the way she is with men, with her daughter, at work and show that she is much more rebellious than she is submissive and that she is a complex and interesting character.

La double négation dans la littérature contemporaine: Une étude sur trois livres contemporains2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to observe how the french double negative is used by two contemporary authors in their books : Je voudrais que quelqu’un m’attende quelque part from Anna Gavalda, Kiffe Kiffe demain and Un homme ça ne pleure pas from Faïza Guène. As the omission of “ne” is made more and more orally while it should not be ignored according to French grammar rules, we have seen different factors that lead to the loss of this particle. Then, thanks to a quantitative and qualitative analysis of these books, we analysed how the authors decide to juggle negation with or without the particle “ne” and whether the results coincide with the sociolinguistic hypotheses of previous research on the same subject. The results show that the omission is done mainly with the term “pas”, that the age and language style of the speaker plays a lot on the omission as well as the situation in which he/she is located

    Abstract [en]

The objective of this paper is to study the role of politeness in verbal interaction. The document will answer the question whether a dialogue can remain peaceful and frictionless also when politeness is absent. A brief description of the Politeness Theory is followed by an analysis. The analysis will however show that we cannot speak of complete lack of politeness but only during a very short time, without risking the threat of conflict. These non-polite but peaceful moments will occur in dialogues where there is already a relationship of trust between users.

    Abstract [en]

This essay studies the image of women in L’Amant by Marguerite Duras and Kiffekiffe demain by Faïza Guène. These two novels present what is felt, experienced andexpressed by women living in different societies and belonging to differentgenerations. In order to make a comparative study of the two texts, we analysed, onthe one hand, the similarities and the differences between the main characters, andalso between some secondary female characters in the two stories, and on the otherhand, the status of the women in these two different societies and eras. We have alsostudied the image of men in relation to the image of women. We have come to theconclusion that the status of women is always inferior compared to men, whether inthe family or in the social environment, despite the great time difference betweenthe two periods.

L’utilisation des pratiques théâtrales dans l'enseignement du FLE en Suède. Une étude qualitative.: A Qualitative Study of the Usage of Creative Drama Activities when teaching French as a Foreign Language in Sweden2017Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to investigate how a group of Swedish teachers works with creative drama activities when teaching French as a foreign language. Also, the aim is to analyse the teachers’ attitudes towards the use of these activities, as well as the factors influencing their choice of activities in order to develop the pupils’ oral communication skills. After an analysis of the corpus, which includes interviews with four teachers and twelve responses to a survey, the conclusion is that, in general, teachers have a positive attitude towards the use of creative drama activities as an alternative method when teaching French as a foreign language. Moreover, they are aware of all the advantages that this pedagogical tool implies. Nevertheless, they do not always use the concept of creative drama in the sense of "simulacre", or imitation of real life events, which involves both verbal and non-verbal communication, as it has been described in the first paper, namely Le théâtre éducatif dans l’enseignement du FLE (Mihart, 2016).

La condition de la femme dans le roman Kiffe kiffe demain2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis focuses on the condition of women in Faïza Guène's first novel: Kiffe kiffe demain (2004). Our study pays particular attention to the narrator Doria and the other main characters all from the Maghreb living in the suburbs of Paris. The novel tells the story of Doria, a young French teenager, born of Maghrebi immigration. The narrator describes the difficult conditions of Maghrebi women in her city. She portrays a positive image of the city that is not of crime, prejudice and stereotypes. The theoretical framework is based on Gender Studies, but also on the situation of the Muslim population in France in general and the condition of the Maghrebian Muslim woman in France in particular. We chose five key themes for the analysis to understand the role of women in the novel: abandonment, family, marriage, racism and discrimination, and the Parisian suburbs. The study clarifies how identity is expressed through these five themes. We can say that the Guène’s novel Kiffe kiffe demain is feminist because the narrator is fights for the rights and freedoms of Maghrebi women living in France.

Les stratégies de traduction de référents culturels dans deux romans policiers de Henning Mankell2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this paper, we examine what translation strategies two different translators use when translating cultural references, i.e. words related to the culture of a country. The studied texts are two Crime Novels written by Henning Mankell, "Faceless Killers" is translated by Philippe Bouquet in 1994 and "The Troubled Man" is translated by Anna Gibson in 2010.

We used Brynja Svane’s analytical model of translation strategies. Strategies that are represented in the studied texts are direct reproduction, direct translation, paraphrasing, omission, addition and translation with an approved equivalent. We discussed various examples to compare the choice of strategies and to determine whether the texts are oriented towards the source language or the target language concerning the translation of cultural references.

The results of the study show that there are some differences in the choice of strategies between the two translators. The translation from 1994 is slightly more faithful to the original text than the translation from 2010. Both translations are still very oriented towards the language source.

Mémoire de licence Quand un paysage naît, un autre meurt: – Une analyse écocritique du roman Naissance d'un pont 2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay consists of an ecocritical analysis of the novel Naissance d'un pont, written by Maylis de Kerangal. The essay's overall purpose is to examine how this novel describes the relationship between humans and nature. Above all, we look at the narrative strategies used by the author to convey the image of this relationship and moreover, we discuss the role of the different landscapes figuring in the novel. Finally, the analysis also includes a brief reflection on the novel's potential to influence the reader's attitude towards ecology.

The analysis of narrative strategies focuses on the narrator's role, as well as the presence and function of ethical perspectives, symbolic names and figures of speech. These strategies contribute to depicting a variety of ideas concerning human lifestyles, whereas the descriptions of landscapes demonstrate the complex relationship between the human society and the natural and constructed landscapes respectively.

Naissance d'un pont seems to promote a more humble attitude to nature than the one dominating in today's society. In order to evaluate the novel's capacity to transmit these values to the reader, it would however be reasonable to take several factors into account, such as the complexity of the language and the story's credibility level.

The aim of this study is to analyze and study French pupils spelling and more specificallyspelling errors. The study is based on the blogs of 78 young french students where spellingerrors are analyzed based on a typology by Nina Catach (1980). This typology explains whattype of spelling errors that can occur in the French language. La maitrise de l’orthographelexicale du français et de l’espagnol is a study made by Sony Mayard (2007) which explainsthe complexity of the French spelling. The study shows that first of all, the spelling of pupils is not something that can concretely bejudged or cataloged. You can never explain exactly why French pupils have an way ofspelling, since spelling is individual and takes several key factors in to consideration. However, this study presents one approach of how spelling errors can be differentiated andthe possible reasons why they are judged as incorrect.

    Abstract [en]

Does the simple act of reading a children’s book enable children to deve

    lop their language skills?

This is the question we pose in our thesis. Our goal is to analyse the texts in the books about Little

Brown Bear (Petit Ours Brun in French), who is a favourite among small children, and to observe

whether certain terms, like Little Brown Bear, are repeated, as well as terms that form part of the

book titles. To achieve this goal, we analysed the texts in the books about Little Brown Bear and

the syntactical place of the most frequently used terms. Our results partially validate our

hypothesis. In addition, we studied the types of verbs (state or action) and the verbal tenses that

are most often used in the texts. Our goal is to examine whether the character of Little Brown

Bear is one of action or state, and to see whether the verb tenses used correspond to the language

level of a 3-year-old child. Our results show that Little Brown Bear is indeed a character of action,

despite our observing a more frequent repetition of state verbs. However, the most often used

tense is the present and as such does not meet the level of grammar that a 3-year-old child can use

    and understand.

    Abstract [en]

The current work consists of a study of The Little Prince, written by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The purpose of this study is to analyze the reception of the message given to the adult reader and the child reader. We have analyzed how the child and the adult interpret the work containing images and allegories. Then we have analyzed the fictional characters in order to interpret their symbolic meaning. To conduct this research we have looked at various allegorical interpretations. The result of our study shows that the reception of the message varies between the adult reader and the child reader. The result of this study also shows that it is too 3

difficult for the child reader to understand the moral sense of an allegorical image, while the adult reader is able to interpret the allegorical picture more easily by relying on the reading and life experiences. The author uses the symbolic image of the literature to clarify the truth about man and human society. In conclusion we learn that the work of the Little Prince makes us reflect upon life with a deeper philosophical meaning.

The novel studied in this literary analysis is

L’hiver de force written by Réjean Ducharme and published by Gallimard in 1973. The objective of this work was to reach an understanding as for why the main characters André and Nicole, two clever and educated malcontents, chose to live a life leading to basically nothing, all this while insulting just about everyone and everything. Furthermore, we suggest an answer, in the narrative context, to the question « why does the winter begin a 21st of June? » In order to realise this study, we looked into the invectif, a literary theory developed by Marie-Hélène Larochelle, as well as the notion of social determinism.

    Abstract [en]

This paper is a study of the novels Bonjour tristesse by Françoise Sagan and L’Amant by Marguerite Duras on the theme young love. The aim of the study has been to examine the love stories of the two young girls, Cécile in Bonjour tristesse and ‘l’enfant’ (the child) in L’Amant, to find out whether the story of young love is a story that changes with the surroundings or if it stays independent of the entourage and the milieu. The stories are really different considering the geography, the living conditions, the characteristics of the authors and the epochs. In our analysis we have carefully examined those parts of the novels where young love is mentioned. We have found that it seems that the parts describing young love are very alike in the two novels.

    Abstract [en]

The object of this study is to explore the « imaginative geography » in the novel Le ventre de l’Atlantique, written by Fatou Diome. The concept of « imaginative geography » describes relations of spatial domination and the construction of the « Other », entirely different from « us » (Saïd, 1978). The two countries in the novel, France and Senegal, are analysed as two irreconcilable spheres, associated with oppositions such as we – the Other, individualism – collectivism, rationality – superstition.

Two spatial images are discussed in this study: the island of Niodior in Senegal and the Atlantic Ocean. The isolation of Niodior reinforces the separation into two opposed spheres, while the Atlantic Ocean constitutes an element charged with magical forces, connected to life and death. Referring to the idea of hybridity, the novel also presents alternative spaces and identities, transgressing the colonial structure.

Théâtre du Grand-Guignol : Les mécanismes de la peur dans deux pièces du théâtre médical d’André de Lorde et Alfred BinetL’Obsession et Une leçon à la Salpêtrière .2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [fr]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to study how the word lagom is translated into French. The research question is to see which different translation methods are used and whether a particular translation comes up systematically i.e. whether there is a key translation of the word lagom or not. A quantitative analysis carried out to identify all possible translations of the word lagom in our corpus. A qualitative analysis followed, in which the difficulties encountered will be analysed, specifically how the translator was able to translate the message with reference to the processes of Vinay and Darbelnet and the theory of Tegelberg. It was found that when a word is related to a cultural phenomenon, such as lagom, a certain insecurity infiltrates its translation thus resulting in variations in translation.

L’influence de l’immigration sur l’usage de la langue française en Suisse.: Une comparaison entre le français, l’allemand et l’italien en Suisse.2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This analysis answers the research question "to what extent does immigration in Switzerlandinfluence the use of the French language in Switzerland? “ The research shows that thehypothesis, saying that if there is more immigration there are fewer people who speak Frenchbecause most immigrants come from Germany and do not speak French, is false according tostatistics from the Federal Statistical Office. These statistics for the period 1980 to 2012/2013are the corpus of this sociolinguistic study. However we found a relation between theincreasing rate of qualified professionals from Germany in Switzerland and the growth ofHigh-german as a language used at work. In comparison with German, French is used more athome than at work.

La traduction des pronoms relatifs du français au suédoisdans les documents du Parlement Européen2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study on the translation of the documents of the European Parliament observes and

examines the difficulty that is in the translation of relatives clauses from French to

Swedish. Particular interest is given to the translation of relative pronouns that will be

shown to have different linguistic values in the two languages.

Guided by previous studies of a similar nature in this field, this essay uses a mainly

quantitative method that seeks to calculate the number of relative clauses that either keep

or lose their relative pronouns when they are translated into Swedish. Then comes a

qualitative commentary of the results that are found in the quantification of these small but

    very important words.

The issue of translating the style of a text is one that is intrinsic to and omnipresent in the

work of translators in the European Union. Thus, this essay attempts to find whether the

removal or avoidance of relative pronouns, in Swedish texts that have as a source

language French, extenuates this task and makes the text more accessible to the Swedish

    audience at large

Les Précieuses Ridiculisées2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This research paper, based on Molière's Les Précieuses ridicules, analyses the author's opinion of the phenomenon of “précieusité” in order to determine the reasons for his satirical attack on the “salonnières”. The essay opens with a historical framework in which are established the temporal limits and the causes of the precious movement in France in the seventeenth century. The latter are located in the political and social changes that followed the period of the Fronde and the establishment of the absolutist monarchy of Louis XIV. The second part, by reviewing the most popular satirists of the time, establishes the plausible sources of Molière's play and determines the political nature of satire. Then, our analysis highlights how the true targets of Molière are not the précieuses but the bourgeois who aspire to rise to the level of the aristocracy. The last part is a reflection on the model of feminism adopted by the author and its similarities with Miss de Scudéry.

Le Réalisme dans le roman policier: Une Analyse du réalisme des décors, des personnages et de l'enquête dans deux romans policiers2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [un]

L’insatisfaction chez Emma Bovary et Gustave Flaubert2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This memoir aims to highlight the origin of the dissatisfaction of Emma Bovary and the reason why Flaubert chose this unsatisfied character. For this we have based our research on the socio-historical and psychological context of Emma Bovary to determine the origin of this feeling. We try to highlight the condition of women in the nineteenth century to see how their condition in the nineteenth century played a role in this situation. We analyse the character of madame Bovary: her education, her dreams and her marriage with Charles. It is a question of showing if the education and the entourage of this woman have an influence on her capricious personality by which she always tries to satisfy her body and her soul. A biographical approach of the author is necessary to demonstrate the probable reasons which pushed Flaubert to choose the unsatisfied character of his heroine.

Le lecteur absurde: Une analyse déconstructionniste de la construction littéraire camusienne à travers le concept de l’absurde dans La Peste d’Albert Camus2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis provides a non-traditional interpretation of the importance of the concept of the absurd in The Plague for Albert Camus’ literary construction.   The analysis, carried out through a deconstructionist perspective, focuses on the role that the concept of the absurd plays for Camus’ literary production and his way of constructing the relation between the reader, the author and the text. An emphasis is placed on the usage of the word ‘plague’ in this regard.   We conclude that the relation between the reader and the author is significant in Camus’ literary production in The Plague. We see that his way of working with the literary relations at several levels, and his way of creating a textual framework between the reader, the author and the literary characters through these relations, invite the reader to participate in a process that is, in Camus’ own vocabulary, absurd.  The thesis also introduces a new concept, namely that of the absurd reader.

    Abstract [en]

The current work consists of a study of Vol de Nuit and Le Petit Prince, written by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The purpose of this study is to analyze the origin of the imagination in these works. As Saint-Exupéry was known as a writer as well as an aviator, we are wondering how the world of aviation is presented in his works. We have reviewed some studies which have been done on the works of Saint-Exupéry, in the purpose of discerning the different interpretations of imagination. Then we have analyzed some metaphors and some symbols in order to interpret their symbolic meaning. The results of this study show that even if Vol de Nuit is an action novel and Le Petit Prince is considered a tale, we can discern that both of them share the same theme of aviation. Saint-Exupéry use imagination in the purpose of expressing his reflections about the meaning of life. As a conclusion we learn that, despite their differences, Vol de Nuit and Le Petit contain a deep message about the values of humanity. This message is hidden in the imagination, a message that is valid even in our days.

    Abstract [fr]

    Abstract [en]

The pronunciation of French schwa by Swedish learners of French

The purpose of this paper is to examine the pronunciation of French schwa by Swedish learners of French as a foreign language. The study investigates how the learners deal with schwa deletion (mute e), which is a very frequent phonological process in spoken French, and also how the learners pronounce the schwa when it is not deleted.

The corpus used for this study was built in the context of the international project IPFC (Interphonologie du français contemporain), and consists of recordings of learners with Swedish as their mother tongue.

Thirty learners participated in the first part of the study. Their task was to read and repeat isolated terms from two lists of words and to read a short text. The results show that many learners have difficulties in pronouncing French schwa correctly. In fact, they often pronounce it as [e] or [ɛ] (e.g. revanche pronounced [ʁevɑ̃ʃ] instead of [ʁəvɑ̃ʃ]). This problem often persists even for very advanced learners, even though learners who have spent at least six months in a French-speaking country generally have better results than those who have spent less time in the target culture. However, there is a wide variation among learners and also from one word to another. As to schwa deletion, the results show that the students delete very few schwas. Moreover, the results indicate that the learners do not produce schwa deletions that involve left attachment of the word’s first consonant with the preceding word across the lexical boundary (e.g. dans le coin [dɑ̃l.kwɛ̃]).

The part of the corpus used for the second part of the study consists of dialogues between 10 of the students. The analysis shows that the learners make more schwa deletions in conversation than when they read a text (as studied in the first part). Compared to native French speakers however, the learners make fewer schwa deletions, especially in the initial syllable of polysyllabic words (e.g. semaine, demi). The learners do not make any incorrect schwa deletions, unlike what has been observed among Dutch learners. When it comes to the vowel quality, fifty percent of the students pronounce most schwas correctly, while the other half often pronounce the vowel incorrectly as [e] or [ɛ]. Even some of the students who lived for several years in France have problems with the pronunciation. The results also show that schwa is better pronounced in monosyllabic words (e.g. je, le) than in polysyllabic words.

L’effet de la présence ou de l’absence de liaison sur la perception de suites comportant des non-mots2010In: Phonlex 2010: Liaison and other sandhi phenomena, Toulouse, 2010Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [un]

Muntlig interaktion i det virtuella klassrummet – möjligheter och utmaningar2017Conference paper (Other academic)
