Självbestämmande genom delaktighet: En kvalitativ intervjustudie om hur socialsekreterare beaktar klientens självbestämmande2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of how social secretaries who handle financial support perceive the client’s self-determination in relation to the exercise of authority. We interpreted these experiences through a theoretical framework based on Empowerment. The study has a qualitative design and was conducted with semi- structured telephone interviews. The population for the study was social workers who handle financial assistance. The selection group consisted of seven social workers active in Sweden. The results and the subsequent analysis generated four main themes and nine sub-themes regarding perceptions about the concept of self-determination per se, about the client's selfdetermination in relation to laws and regulations and about the strategies that respondents use to promote client self-determination. The results showed that participation was an important part of the work to promote client self- determination.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to review the available research on compulsory care for individuals with substance use disorder and provide a summary of the effects of compulsory care on various areas. In order to do this, and given the limited amount of research in this area, a scoping review was conducted. The first step was to search for research in three different databases, the databases used were, Web of science, Sociology collection and Scopus. Next the identified articles’ reference lists were scrutinized to find more. A total of 12 articles were identified and the research within the area shows that it is common to have repeated involuntary care for people with substance abuse. Mortality is high in this group, and there is a great need to develop after care programs for people who have been in compulsory care.

    Abstract [en]

In this report, we have presented the first part of two in the interdisciplinary research project LEX - sustainable Living Environments for people with psychiatric disabilities. Aligning housing planning and social services through eXperimental collaborative practices

Our starting point was to find out more about what characterizes support measures aimed at people with mental disabilities and how these are organized, and to investigate cross-sectoral collaboration in terms of planning for housing and inclusive living environments.

Our material shows that the target group for housing and support initiatives has changed. People with disabilities due to long-term psychological disabilities still constitute a central group, often in need of interventions with a high level of service. However, the target group for the initiatives is changing and this has in some municipalities led to a development towards a more general organization for the support initiatives without specialist functions. Housing initiatives decided in accordance with SoL dominate, but a mixture of approaches can be seen, from individual exceptions where LSS is applied to a municipality where all decisions about housing with special services are made according to LSS. When it comes to the types of activities for support measures, traditional group housing and housing support dominate. Some believe that group housing as a type will eventually disappear, and among those responsible for operations, there is a consensus that the field is generally moving towards a direction to work towards increased independence and autonomy for the users within the operations.

The ways in which social services and community building administrations work together with issues that affect the target group differs between the municipalities. The work is sometimes organized in networks, sometimes it is about coordination, in some cases cooperation or collaboration. In some municipalities, there are forums for continuous joint work, in others it is not considered necessary at all. How meetings between the two administrations are organized, on whose initiative and responsibilities are handled in different ways. It is a complex picture that emerges where issues are raised in different instances and at different levels within the own administration as well as between the administrations.

When it comes to municipal housing provision responsibility, the work of developing the housing provision program is an important part. Officials from different administrations are involved in various ways in this work, from coordination and coordination to long-term strategic collaborations. Different types of roles are produced, such as initiators, information providers, experts or spokespersons with different areas of action. The social services' experience-based knowledge of the current situation for different groups is not always used. In the material, the issue appears to be politically sensitive and is presented as a broad goal of 'housing for all', but with limited concretization.

The municipal strategies for locating housing with special services are about converting existing premises, building new housing in already built-up housing areas and planning for new housing in urban development processes. The overall pattern for the location of housing is in the outskirts of  residential areas, a compromise between the social administration's ideas about social inclusion and the community building administrations' ideas about integrity. However, users' opportunities to acquire positive neighborly contacts may be hampered by such peripheral locations.

What an inclusive, ‘good’, living environment could be for people with mental disabilities turns out to be a new issue for our interviewed officials. Several informants from the social services have not previously thought about how housing and employment relate to each other geographically and in what way it affects experiences of the living environment. Considering inclusive living environments for our target group as part of the broader community planning was not obvious to the planners. It also emerged that it is more difficult for the municipality to make architectural demands to those who build housing with special services and other similar care housing than what it is to those who construct other public buildings such as city halls, libraries or swimming pools, something that is reflected in location and architectural quality.

"Mycket ligger på oss biståndshandläggare": En kvalitativ studie om hur biståndshandläggare inom äldreomsorgen upplever arbetet med äldre som har en alkoholproblematik2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Although alcohol consumption among the elderly is rising this is still modestly noted. Care managers in elderly care come in contact with elderly people. The purpose with the study was therefore to examine how care managers experience the work with elderly people with alcohol problems and six qualitative interviews have been conducted. Empirical data has been analyzed with thematic analysis and linked to previous research and Hasenfelds theory about

    people-processing, people-sustaining and people-changing.

The results show that care managers experience routines regarding elderly with alcohol problems, does not differ much from traditional elderly cases. These cases demand a higher level of cooperation between different departments, because they lack resources to help the elderly. Important factors in the work are considered to be motivational work, building a trust and a functioning interaction. They request more knowledge about elderly and alcohol, support from colleagues and the substance abuse unit are considered important.

Att ta del av andras trauman: En kvalitativ studie om compassion fatigue i utredningsarbete med ensamkommande barn och ungdomar2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate perceptions and experiences of compassion fatigue that exist among social workers who work with the investigative work of unaccompanied children and adolescents. The study further investigated their experiences of preventive and counteracting actions.

In this qualitative study, interviews were conducted with six social workers who worked with unaccompanied children and adolescents.

The results show that social workers have experiences of compassion fatigue. There are many descriptions of burnout syndrome, and a few descriptions of secondary traumatic stress. The results also show that social workers have many ideas about how to prevent or counteract compassion fatigue, both with ideas in the form of self-care or ideas about organizational changes.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this qualitative essay is to study how pre-school staff experience and reason in

mandatory reporting processes and which aspects they consider important for their work in

these processes. The empirical data was collected from focus group interviews and individual

interviews. The overall result indicates that pre-school staff experience mandatory reporting

processes as complex since they have to relate to circumstances at both micro, mezzo and

macro levels. Among some other aspects these circumstances constitutes individual roles and

role conflicts, group discussions and existing social norms. It’s also the experienced

complexity that make pre-school staff reason about whether to report or not. This result

corresponds with previous research but unfortunately badly corresponds with the intentions

of the legislator. Further on, the result show that pre-school staff finds it meaningful to get

support and counseling from colleagues and other professions to gain help when working in

    mandatory reporting processes.

Det (o)hanterliga klientvåldet: En kvalitativ studie om socialsekreterares upplevelser och hantering av klientvåld2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

“The (un)manageable client violence” is a qualitative interview study aiming to explore social workers experiences of client violence and how they cope with the issue in their professional role. More than every third social worker is said to have been exposed to client violence and it appears to be one of the most common reasons of why social workers get burned out or quit their jobs. Six semi-structural interviews were conducted in the study and got analyzed with a thematical analysis. The coping- and resilience theory were used to understand the empirical material. This study’s result showed that client violence depends on the situation and affects the social workers differently. Common coping strategies tended to be searching for social support in their surroundings and separating the professional and the private self. The result also showed that the client violence does not feel as violent after being exposed to it repeatedly.

    Abstract [en]

There are multiple correlations between reduction in health and substance use disorder in both directions. People suffering from substance use disorder are an especially vulnerable group in many regards to Covid-19. How the pandemic has affected these persons in Sweden is a gap that needs to be filled. The purpose of this study is to describe how addiction counsellors perceive that the state of society during the Covid-19 pandemic has impacted the therapy and prevalence of substance abuse. This study deals with substance abuse of alcohol and/or drugs. This study is founded on a thematic analysis from five individual qualitative interviews with addiction counsellors, working in either in- or outpatient care mental and behavioural disorders due to psychoactive substance use. The interviews were semi-structured, and the results were scrutinized through thematic analysis with a social cognitive theory lens. The results point towards changes in both private and professional relations, mental health, the work environment, and an increased prevalence of substance abuse. Decreased mental health related to restrictions to decrease the spread of Covid-19 with changes in habits and less social contacts increases the risk of starting or relapsing a substance abuse. Restrictions and change in work conditions has had a negative impact on substance abuse treatment.

An Explorative Integration of Factors Causing Men's Violence against Women2017In: Journal of Psychology and Clinical Psychiatry, ISSN 2373-6445, Vol. 8, no 2, p. 2-11Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Despite the great progress in individual disciplines studying men’s physical violence against women, the various disciplines have developed much different approaches that by themselves are insufficient for understanding the processes that lead to men’s violence against women. Moreover, they also tend to neglect the equally important issue of understanding why some men are not violent toward women. The aim of this work is to integrate former research on socially modifiable factors and therefore does not include theories relating genetics and neurochemistry that may also play an important role. It shows how the psychological approach within criminology can be integrated with the feminist masculinity perspective. The work illustrates that it is both theoretically and methodologically possible, through an integration of previous research, to make hypotheses about under which conditions men are likely to be violent against women, as well as make hypotheses about under what conditions men are unlikely to be violent against women. This study also emphasizes methodologically important non-dichotomous forms where both enabling and reactive conditions are mixed at various levels. Despite the methodological problems, an integrated perspective on men’s violence against women is the most promising way forward today.

Exploring pathways related to men’s violence: A qualitative exploration of the relationship between violent men’s violence and their masculinities, childhood, and emotions2019In: Deviant behavior, ISSN 0163-9625, E-ISSN 1521-0456, Vol. 40, no 10, p. 1171-1186Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study explored new ways of finding knowledge about violent men’s pathways toward their status as violent criminals and the mechanisms that underlie their violent behavior. The empirical data were gathered through biographical interviews with 10 men sentenced to therapy against violence and drugs at a Swedish treatment center. The men who had experienced violence and childhood maltreatment tended to bypass shame with uncontrolled anger and violence when reliving childhood traumas. Conversely, men without extreme childhood experiences seemed to exhibit more controlled violence mechanisms. Two men who had experienced brutal physical school bullying might have been expected to bypass shame with immediate violence; however, these men described their violence as controlled, suggesting that they had learnt to take cognitive control over their bypass mechanisms in order to escape the bullying.

    Abstract [en]

This dissertation’s objective is to explore the possibilities of an integrated research perspective on male violence and exemplify how such research can be conducted. The specific objective is to increase awareness of how men’s childhood experiences, socialization, masculinity and emotions are related to their violence against other men, against themselves and against women (Paper III and IV) and how therapeutic interventions against violence can be analyzed and developed in correspondence with this knowledge (Paper I and II).

The research was conducted through qualitative studies. The data collection methods comprised a theoretical review (Paper I), group-interviews (Papers II and III) and interviews (Paper IV). Altogether, 25 men participated in the studies.

Qualitative content analysis was used to analyze the group-interviews (Paper II and III) and biographical analysis wasused to when analyzing the mens life-histories (Paper IV). The findings showed that an integrative perspective can reduce the risk of ecological fallacies and develop the understanding of the complex interaction between the factors behind men’s violence. These findings may also contribute to the development of violence therapies. The theoretical review article (Study I) exemplifies how the theoretical and methodological driven research on social bonds can be adjusted to treatment against male violence. The applied study on a CBT-therapy (Study II) exemplifies how operationalized indicators of pride and shame can be used to determine the quality of the social bonds between therapist and client. The comparison between two groups of men in two opposite masculinity positions (Study III) shows that both groups are carrying ambivalent attitudes towards violence and violence against women. Nevertheless the group’s masculinity constructions and attitudes towards violence correspond with their access to economic, social, political and cultural resources. The biographical focused qualitative study of men in violence treatment (Study IV) shows that the men who have been subjected to severe violence in their childhood are more shame-prone and tend to bypass shame with aggressions and violence. The other men generally describe their violent reaction as controlled.

The findings point to the general conclusion that the further development of the understanding of men’s violence, and the development of effective therapies against violence are depending on our ability to integrate research from different scientific perspectives.

Ambivalent attitudes towards equality and violence against women among men in a pro-feminist network2017Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

There is a great need for more knowledge on how a pro-feminist masculinity that challenges the normative hegemonic masculinity can be developed. To achieve this, it is important to gain more knowledge on how pro-feminist men relate to gender quality, violence in general and violence against women in particular, and when and why their reasoning points to ambivalence. The study was based on secondary analyzes of qualitative interviews done with five men active in a pro-feminist network in Sweden. The research questions applied spanned over several areas: socioeconomic status, masculinity construction and the men’s proximity to violence. Data analysis method used was content analysis, and as a means of increasing the reliability, member-check was used. The study was approved by the Regional Ethical Review Board. On a general level, the results show that the men’s masculine construction towards gender equality corresponded with their privileged position as regards to their socioeconomic status, as regards to educational level and job career. The men were positive to gender equality and opposed both men’s control of woman and violence against women. More in-depth analysis thus shows that the interviewed men acknowledged using some forms of less overt control over women and thus in some sense showed ambivalent attitude to gender equality. The men also, somewhat paradoxically, accepted some conventional forms of men’s violence.

A conclusion from the study is that the conditions that the results highlights may pose problems for the development of gender equality and the ending of violence against women. This is because to make violence against women end all men, and particularly pro-feminist men, need to renounce all forms of violence and be aware of how gender equality can be weakened or strengthened by all different forms of gender interaction.

    Abstract [en]

This explorative study aimed to develop an understanding of how a sample of two groups of men, considered to be situated at different ends of Connell’s masculinity continuum, construct their masculinity, and how these constructions relate to their proximity to violence against women (VAW). One group consisted of five men incarcerated for violent crimes (MIVC) that had previously used VAW. The other included five participants in the pro-feminist group Men Against Violence (MAV), without prior VAW. An abductive approach, using qualitative interviews, was employed. Results show that the MIVC participants appeared ambivalent, unreflective, and inconsistent in their masculinity constructions, and used VAW as part of their problem-solving repertoire. The MAV participants appeared to have a reflexive stance towards gender equality and consistently adopted inclusive ways of enacting masculinity and preventing VAW. The study can only provide some support to the postulated relationship between men’s masculinity positions and their attitudes toward VAW.

En kvalitativ innehållsanalys av hur ensamkommande barn framställs i svenska nyhetsmedier2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Carers in the welfare state: on informal care and support for carers in Sweden2005Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The general aim of this dissertation is to describe and analyse patterns of informal care and support for carers in Sweden. One specific aim is to study patterns of informal care from a broad population perspective in terms of types of care and types of carer. A typology of four different care categories based on what carers do revealed that women were much more likely than men to be involved at the ‘heavy end’ of caring, i.e. providing personal care in combination with a variety of other caring tasks. Men were more likely than women to provide some kind of practical help (Study I).

Another aim is to investigate which support services are received by which types of informal caregiver. Relatively few informal caregivers in any care category were found to be receiving any kind of support from municipalities or voluntary organizations, for example training or financial assistance (Study II).

The same study also examines which kinds of help care recipients receive in addition to that provided by informal carers. It appears that people in receipt of personal care from an informal caregiver quite often also receive help from the public care system, in this case mostly municipal services. However, the majority of those receiving personal, informal care did not receive any help from the public care system or from voluntary organizations or for-profit agencies (Study II).

The empirical material in studies I and II comprises survey data from telephone interviews with a random sample of residents in the County of Stockholm aged between 18 and 84.

In a number of countries there is a growing interest among social scientists and social policymakers in examining the types of support services that might be needed by people who provide informal care for older people and others. A further aim of the present dissertation is therefore to describe and analyse the carer support that is provided by municipalities and voluntary organizations in Sweden. The dissertation examines whether this support is aimed directly or indirectly at caregivers and discusses whether the Swedish government’s special financial investment in help for carers actually led to any changes in the support provided by municipalities and voluntary organisations. The main types of carer support offered by the municipalities were payment for care-giving, relief services and day care. The chief forms of carer support provided by the voluntary organizations were support groups, training groups, and a number of services aimed primarily at the elderly care recipients (Study III).

Patterns of change in municipal carer support could be discerned fairly soon. The Swedish government’s special allocation to municipalities and voluntary organisations appears to have led to an increase in the number of municipalities providing direct support for carers, such as training, information material and professional caregiver consultants. On the other hand, only minor changes could be discerned in the pattern of carer support services provided by the voluntary organizations. This demonstrates stability and the relatively low impact that policy initiatives seem to have on voluntary organizations as providers (Study IV).

In studies III and IV the empirical material consists of survey data from mail questionnaires sent to municipalities and voluntary organizations in the County of Stockholm.

In the fields of social planning and social work there appears to be a need to clarify the aims of support services for informal carers. Should the support be direct or indirect? Should it be used to supplement or substitute caregivers? In this process of reappraisal it will be important to take the needs of both caregivers and care recipients into account when developing existing and new forms of support. How informal caregivers and care recipients interact with the care system as a whole is undeniably a fertile field for further research.

Informal care and support for carers in Sweden: patterns of service receipt among informal caregivers and care recipients2004In: European Journal of Social Work, ISSN 1369-1457, E-ISSN 1468-2664, Vol. 7, no 1, p. 7-24Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study describes and analyses the kinds of support received by different categories of informal carers, and the kinds of help that care recipients receive in addition to that provided by various categories of carers. Data were collected in a Swedish county in 2000, by means of telephone interviews. The net sample consisted of 2,697 individuals 18-84 years old, and the response rate was 61%. The results showed that relatively few carers in any care category received any kind of support aimed directly at them as carers. The most widespread form of support received by providers of personal care was relief services. Those most likely to be receiving care from the public care system were people also receiving personal care from an informal caregiver. Nevertheless, the majority of those receiving personal care from an informal carer did not receive any help from the public care system or from voluntary organizations or for-profit agencies. These results indicate that social policy and social work need to clarify the aims of the services they provide. They also need to take the needs of both caregivers and recipients into account when discussing support systems.

Patterns of Informal Help and Caregiving in Sweden: a Thirteen-Year Perspective2009In: Social Policy & Administration, ISSN 0144-5596, E-ISSN 1467-9515, Vol. 43, no 7, p. 681-701Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article analyses informal help and caregiving in Sweden with a focus on the scope and trends of change over time. The discussion is based on the results of three national surveys and of one survey conducted in the county of Stockholm. The results indicated that informal help and caregiving was common throughout the period under study. In the 1990s, the figures were fairly stable, while from the late 1990s to 2005 there seems to have been a dramatic increase in the prevalence of such support. Two interpretative perspectives are used to discuss this pattern. One locates its point of departure in recent welfare state changes and in the substitution argument, according to which cuts in welfare services put more pressure on people to provide informal help and care. The second perspective relates to the present debate on civil society and to its possible role in contemporary society. According to the civil society perspective, an increase in the prevalence of informal help and caregiving might be interpreted as an expression of growing civic involvement ‘in its own right’, without a straightforward and simple relationship to changes in the welfare state. It is argued in the article that the two frames of interpretation should not be viewed as mutually exclusive, but rather that they represent two partly complementary approaches to the understanding of the complex dynamics of unpaid work in contemporary Swedish society.

Preventive and supportive measures towards the abandonment of Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting: A Minor Field Study in The Gambia2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to examine how advocacy workers from different governmental and non-governmental organisations work with female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) and gender equality in The Gambia. We further examined their experienced difficulties and the provided support to women exposed to FGM/C. The study was based on field observations of events, meetings and educational events, as well as semi-structured and open-ended interviews with ten participants. Through a thematic analysis, findings show that counselling were the main form of support, and the most experienced difficulties was the male dominance, the cultural belief and the culture of silence. Education, traditional forums and advocacy where therefore used as informative tools regarding gender roles, power positions and the harmfulness of FGM/C. Thus, findings confirm the importance of the continuous work with the gender roles, the social exclusion of the unmutilated women and the gatekeeping roles hindering the abandonment of the harmful practice.

Interventionen Jag & min familj: Ett familjeorienterat öppenvårdsprogram2023Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The program Me & My Family, which is aimed at families where a parent has problems with alcohol or drug abuse, seems to have effects. The effects are mainly reflected in a better family climate and better mental health for children and adults. This is also confirmed by interview answers. However, more participating families and longer follow-up times are needed to be able to present robust results. One challenge has been to get an influx of families into the program, a result of increasingly specialized organizations working in "downpipes".

From “What Works” to “Why it Works” – From a Humean to an Aristotelian Understanding of Causality2023In: Research on social work practice, ISSN 1049-7315, E-ISSN 1552-7581, Vol. 33, no 6, p. 686-694Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: Authors of this theoretical article are questioning Hume's view on causality by arguing for Aristotle’s pluralistic view as an alternative strategy for social work research and practice. Methods: Aristotle's notion of causality is applied to discuss its relevance, and then tested on a real case, thereby illustrating how it can contribute to explain why something works. Results: Different types of causes can reveal characteristics that are preconditional for professional's and service user's mutual roles in enhancing outcomes. They can further reveal the architecture of the intervention; the underlying processes for actions to reach a desired goal. Discussion: To deliver knowledge of relevance in social work, one needs to explain the results of an intervention through causal analysis as well as understanding the content and processes of it. Aristotle's forms of causality make it possible to take the contextual historicism of social phenomenon into consideration and give knowledge beyond effects. © The Author(s) 2023.

Playing the complex game of social status in school: a qualitative study2020In: Global Health Action, ISSN 1654-9716, E-ISSN 1654-9880, Vol. 13, no 1, article id 1819689Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Background

Research suggests that social status in school plays an important role in the social lives of adolescents and that their social status is associated with their health. Additional knowledge about adolescents? understanding of social hierarchies could help to explain inequalities in adolescents? health and guide public health interventions.

    Objective

The study aimed to explore what contributes to subjective social status in school and the strategies used for social positioning.

    Methods

A qualitative research design with think-aloud interviews was used. The study included 57 adolescents in lower (7th grade) and upper secondary school (12th grade) in Sweden. Subjective social status was explored using a slightly modified version of the MacArthur Scale of Subjective Social Status in school. Data were analyzed using thematic network analysis.

    Results

The participants were highly aware of their social status in school. Elements tied to gender, age, ethnicity and parental economy influenced their preconditions in the positioning. In addition, expectations on how to look, act and interact, influenced the pursue for social desirability. The way these different factors intersected and had to be balanced suggests that social positioning in school is complex and multifaceted.

    Conclusions

Because the norms that guided social positioning left little room for diversity, the possible negative impact of status hierarchies on adolescents? health needs to be considered. In school interventions, we suggest that norms on e.g. gender and ethnicity need to be addressed and problematized from an intersectional approach.

    Abstract [en]

Mental ill-health is a growing problem, where symptoms are often treated with medication instead of psychological treatment that allows the individual to recover in peace and quiet. Equine-assisted intervention is a treatment method that improves an individual's self-esteem and attitude by providing joy and structure. This study investigates the therapist's view of a horse's role in the treatment of mental ill-health. It examines whether a horse can influence the relationship between the client and the therapist, and whether the horse, together with the therapist, can influence the client's recovery. It is a qualitative study, with semistructured interviews and thematic analysis. The result shows that equine-assisted interventions can, with the help of animals and nature, provide the opportunity to recover from mental ill-health with tranquility and improve the client’s relationship with the therapist. However, more research is needed to strengthen the evidence and encourage the adoption of the method in society.

Skolkuratorns etiska överväganden2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

In this thesis, we have examined how social workers experience their profession

with consideration to public attitudes and evidence-based practice. The study

consists of six qualitative interviews with professional social workers in different

municipalities and units. We have used a thematic analysis called Framework.

The studies result showed that many social workers have experienced negative

attitudes about the profession described in the media and from the public. All the

social workers had heard positive things about the profession from their

surroundings and felt pride in their work. Knowledge of evidence-based practice

was found to vary between the social workers, but was primarily considered to be

    a support in everyday work.

    Abstract [en]

There is a knowledge gap found in the preventive methods that the schools use for preventing substance abuse. Through conducting six semi-structured interviews with school staff working at secondary schools, questions have been asked about the staff´s perception on the current prevention work. Focus have been on the challenges and opportunities they encounter. The essay had an abductive approach and a thematic analysis of results. Theories used to analyse the collected data consists of social learning theory, stamping theory and the system theory. The most common subject in the interview revolved around adolescences trying to find their identity whilst encountering wrong kind of relationships. The key themes brought up was a safe environment in school, that the adolescences had a relationship to a school staff, informative methods, cooperation with other instances and the surrounding´s role outside of school, for example youth recreation centres. The discussion shows, in accordance with research, that a safe environment is a functioning method. It also showed that there is both challenges and opportunities with informative methods and that a safe relationship to the school staff is essential as a preventive method.

The aim of this study was to investigate how elderly care is portrayed in media. A content analysis with quantitative and qualitative approaches was made to answer the research questions. To ana-lyze and understand the results three theoretical perspectives were used: social constructivism, media logic and agenda theory. The study material was collected from two newspapers, one of which is published locally and the other at the national level, in order to gain a broader under-standing of the media's representation of elderly care and also to see the differences in various newspapers. We used the articles published during two separate months in 2015. Study results show three prominent themes in elderly care that are frequent in the media - the depiction is largely negative, with a focus on shortcomings. The portrayal is similar in both newspapers.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to examine how professionals in care for older people experience older people´s needs of counselling in grievous life questions. A qualitative method has been chosen in the form of individual semi-structured interviews with six care workers in municipal care for older people. The theoretical bases which have been applied are social constructionism and Erik Homburger Erikson's theory: Stages of Psychosocial Development. The result of the study shows that older people in care for older people sometimes are in need of counselling. These needs are not always fulfilled today because of the care workers lack of time and expertise in facing grievous life questions. Counsellors in care for older people are presumed to increase because older people in the future will make more demands and also will find it more natural in life crisis to talk to a counsellor.

    Abstract [en]

The study aimed to investigate what counselors have for experience when it comes to children and

young people's use of social media. Do they see any risks of being online?

The study is based on a qualitative approach with individual semi-structured interviews that were

conducted with counselors in primary- and secondary schools and youth counseling. The applied

theoretical interpretative framework is a theory of John Suler, which can give us an explanation of

why they on the internet act more uninhibited.

The study results show us that there are risks associated with the use of social media in several

aspects. To name a few, there are risks of being exposed to abuse, bullying and sexual harassment

when you are online. In our opinion, the study's findings contribute to an increased knowledge of

this phenomenon and give us deeper knowledge from a new perspective, the counselor.

The aim of the study was to examine social workers experiences regarding the relationship between emotional labor and professional approach as well as the importance of the professional approach to sexual offenders. The used method was a qualitative interview study with a targeted selection of seven social workers who had experiences of working with sexual offenders. The study was implemented by semi-structured interviews and the emipirical data was analyzed through a thematic analysis. The study’s result showed that a professional approach was indeed a important part of their work, especially when it came to being objective and respectful despite the clients violent crimes of a sexual nature. It was also found that the social workers felt that the professional approach could be affected by the emotional challenges that came with their work. The social workers used strategies to maintain their professional approach in situations that were found emotionally challenging.

Our aim with this study was to explore how parents of children diagnosed within the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experienced the contact and support from the municipalities family therapist, an initiative provided by the social services and often executed by social workers. We wanted to investigate how parents experienced treatment from the family therapist, if they received constructive help and whether the family therapist had knowledge of the ASD. We have had a qualitative approach and conducted semi-structured interviews. The transcribed interviews have been interpreted with themes based on the theoretical framework that consists of the concept of alliance and support theory. Our result shows that the informants have had positive experiences in the meeting with family therapists. Most have received constructive help from family therapists who had knowledge about ASD and feel they have received good treatment. The result shows which factors contributed to a

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to investigate the support work that counselors perform with deaf patients and the counselors' attitude toward the disability. The method used was semistructured interviews. The results show that support from the counselors is based on a sociocultural perspective - deaf people are regarded as an ethnic group with its own culture and language, but with variations in attitudes of the counselor. The attitude is affected by cultural norms and relates to which perspective the norm can be derived from. The results also show that the sociocultural perspective is overlooked by the medical aspect in contact with other organizations – the consequence is that the counselor's support efforts become secondary. The support of the counselor is also about softening the medical perspective for deaf patients - to provide assistance to self-help in order for the deaf person to manage as far as possible with owned resources.

    Abstract [en]

Gambling addiction is a public health problem that causes negative consequences for individuals, where gambling addiction is often combined with co-morbidity, which makes the problem more complex. Because of this problem, it is important to examinate how therapists perceive treatment methods. This study aimed to investigate therapists' perceptions of the treatment work, with people who have gambling addiction combined with co-morbidity. Six semi-structured interviews were conducted with therapists based on a qualitative approach. The material was analyzed through thematic analysis. The results indicate that the therapists highlight the importance of integrating and adapting different methods and theories, having a broad approach and cooperation with other actors to treat this complex target group. A conclusion is that the therapists seem to be aware that the treatment work is interdisciplinary where the work with different treatment methods is used eclectically. The study demonstrates the need for further research and preventive work.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate the care managers’ work to reduce loneliness and social isolation in older people. A qualitative exploratory design was used and the material for the study was collected through semi-structured interviews with six care managers. Through a thematic analysis, four main themes emerged: "what is loneliness and social isolation", "identification and information", "the importance of activities and the social context" and "the care manager and the older person". In summary, the interviewed care managers describe that loneliness and social isolation can be prevented and reduced through governmental interventions, but the most important factor is proximity to family and social networks. Moreover, the care managers describe that they can experience impotency, both in relation to the individual client and in relation to framework and lack of resources within their own operation. The impotency is discussed in relation to Lipsky's theory of street level bureaucrats. Despite the challenges that exist, the care managers agree on the importance and significance of their role in working to meet the individual’s needs.

A Cry for Care But not Justice: Embodied Vulnerabilities and the Moral Economy of Child Welfare2020In: Affilia, ISSN 0886-1099, E-ISSN 1552-3020, Vol. 35, no 2, p. 231-245Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study explores the pivotal role of the body for political recognition and rights claims in child welfare "moral" interventions. I examine how the bodily figures in child welfare assessments, linking these manifestations to the concept of the moral economy of care. A sample of assessment reports from a Swedish municipality, all addressing violations of children's bodies or integrity, are used as empirical material. I show how the psychosomatically suffering child is being best "heard" as vulnerable. I also argue that such a moral economy of care silences children's accounts of gendered and racial injustices. Furthermore, racialized moral divides are indicated when assessments of different child bodies are considered. A concluding remark points to need for a child welfare moral economy of social justice that responds to structural intersecting injustices in childhoods, including to those of a racialized child welfare and its individualized and symptom-oriented services.

    Amoral, im/moral and dis/loyal: Children's moral status in child welfare2017In: Childhood, ISSN 0907-5682, E-ISSN 1461-7013, Vol. 24, no 4, p. 470-484Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article is a discursive examination of children's status as knowledgeable moral agents within the Swedish child welfare system and in the widely used assessment framework BBIC. Departing from Fricker's concept of epistemic injustice, three discursive positions of children's moral status are identified: amoral, im/moral and dis/loyal. The findings show the undoubtedly moral child as largely missing and children's agency as diminshed, deviant or rendered ambiguous. Epistemic injustice applies particularly to disadvantaged children with difficult experiences who run the risk of being othered, or positioned as reproducing or accomodating to the very same social problems they may be vicitimised by.
