Genrepedagogik i läromedel: En studie kring arbetsformer och cirkelmodellens faser i läroböcker i svenska och svenska som andraspråk åk. 7-92018Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Performance Evaluation for a Solar Assisted Air Conditioning System in Taipei2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This report shows the study performed at Taipei National University of Technology in Taipei to evaluate the performance of a solar air conditioning system. The performance is evaluated under Taiwan climate conditions. The research is performed under summer weather conditions. No influence is done on these conditions. A solar air conditioning system currently available on the market is used. No changes are made to the system.

The work to be done is divided into different phases in order to guide the process. First, a literature research is done to find similar research done on this topic and to gain a basic understanding of the topic. Then several measurement plans are made to investigate different parts of the system.. Measurements are done. It is tried to developing a computer model in order to be able to simulate the system performance.

The overall objective was to gain knowledge about a solar assisted air-conditioning system and develop a model to simulate the system. Initially a list of research questions was made in order to quantify ‘gaining knowledge’ about the system. The plan was to answer them by using measurement data and creating a model to perform simulations. There are measurements done in this report, however due to too many ‘unknowns’* it is difficult to draw conclusions from them. A lot of research questions are still open and they are also not included in this report. It is also not succeeded to make a working model of a solar assisted air conditioner.

It is succeeded in making a model to predict the performance of the evaporator. This model is currently within 11% accurate.

Att vara socialt isolerad: En kvalitativ studie av rättstillämpningen i Lagen om stöd och service till vissa funktionshindrade (LSS)2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine the concept of "social isolation" regarding

the Swedish law of support and service for disabled (Lag 1993:387 om stöd och service

till vissa funktionshindrade). With help of a text and discourse analysis we want to study how

the concept is constructed in the court of appeal, through an analysis of 10 different court

cases, containing inserts escort/guide service in accordance with 9 § 3 LSS and contact person

according to 9 § 4 LSS. Our study has also focused on individual stories in court cases to

analyze how these constructions in the judiciary can shape an outsider. Key results of the

study is about when the individual is already granted to other interventions, that means you

are part of a social context, is reason for rejection. Another finding that emerged in the

processing of court cases, is the desire of the individual to be able to be a part of what the

community has to offer and to have the opportunity to be like everyone else. Through a social

constructionism perspective, we hope to raise awareness that the world does not have to look

like we see it or take for granted. To do this, we used a discourse analysis where we found

three discourses we analyzed on the basis of being socially isolated. The conclusion showed

that the assessments in court cases can be seen as a social construct and that the constructions

in the legal system creates and recreates an outsider and deviation.

Wage determinants in the Swedish tourism sector2018In: Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism, ISSN 1502-2250, E-ISSN 1502-2269, Vol. 18, no 1, p. 18-38Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A significant number of the jobs that are found in the tourism sector are relatively low-paying positions. The share of part-time employment is also large. This study focuses on individuals who have remained in the sector for many years and are making a career in tourism. The analysis is based on a balanced panel consisting of individuals who, between 2002 and 2011, lived and worked full time in the tourism industry in central Sweden. Data were analyzed using three different models; a cross-sectional OLS model was utilized for the analysis of the data from 2011 and both a pooled OLS model as well as a fixed-effect model were used in the analysis of data between 2002 and 2011. The fixed-effect model is important because it captures differences in ability among the individuals included in the study. The results show a lower income for individuals in the tourism sector compared to the rest of the economy. However, the results of the panel data estimations indicate that the effect of education is stronger for individuals in the tourism sector and that wage levels in this sector is more equal between the men and women, compared to the rest of the economy.

Firm entry in the Swedish wholesale trade sector: dDoes market definition matter?2014In: The annals of regional science, ISSN 0570-1864, E-ISSN 1432-0592, Vol. 53, no 3, p. 703-717Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Firm entry into local markets has often been studied using administrative areas such as municipalities as the assumed relevant markets. However, administrative areas and the actual relevant markets based on local demand for firms’ products often do not coincide, which could bias the results of studies treating administrative areas as the relevant markets. Based on a behavioral assumption regarding how retailers act when purchasing products from wholesale trade firms, we create alternative markets using Voronoi diagrams. We then compare the empirical results of investigating the determinants of firm entry using municipalities as the relevant markets with the results obtained using Voronoi markets. The results indicate that, in both cases, the same variables are statistically significant in affecting entry, though the estimated effects differ in size.

    Abstract [en]

Requirements gathering is done before system development to identify the needs and desired effects with the system. A problem for many systems is that the choice of technology is influenced too much by the techniques available in the company and in many cases is predetermined, instead of being based on the needs and demands of the system. Impact mapping is a method that can be used for requirements gathering, but the method does not focus on technical features. Since technology often is predetermined, it must be taken into consideration during requirements gathering. The question is therefore how to use impact mapping as a support in the choice of technology.

The purpose of this study has been to evaluate the method impact mapping using the method MA/SIMM, to develop a suggestion on how the method should be used as a support in selecting the technology of application type and CMS to achieve the desired effects in the development of a mobile intranet.

The study is based on two research questions:

 How should impact mapping be used as a support in selecting the technology for application type and CMS for a mobile intranet?

 What factors should be considered when selecting the technology of application type and CMS to achieve the desired effects in the development of a mobile intranet?

Literature studies and interviews have been conducted to identify factors. The result of which factors that should be considered when selecting the technology is a list of 13 factors that, roughly, can be divided into factors for application type and factors for CMS.

The method impact mapping has been analyzed from a theoretical and a situational perspective. The result of the method analysis shows that developers should be involved earlier in the process, methods to ensure that unspoken requirements are documented should be used and three changes in the notation for the impact map is needed for impact mapping to be a support for the choice of technique.

Förskollärares tal om föräldrasamverkan2015Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Theory and typology. Macrosociology, institutional spheres and social action

The conceptual triad ’state-market-civil society’ is taken as point of departure for a discussion of the broader issue of the uses of typologies in sociology. It is argued that in order to avoid being subordinated to politically loaded notions pervading public discourse, a genuine sociological typology should meet two demands; its dimensions should be derived from a macro-sociological theory, and it should be underpinned by a micro-sociological theory of action. In this way, a typology will serve as a pipeline between micro and macro theories, and also as a checking point for estimating the coherence between these two levels of analysis. As an illustration, Mary Douglas’ grid-group model is introduced. This typology is derivable from Durkheim’s macro-sociology, but it has a weak microfoundation. Two theories of action are discussed and compared; the theory of rational choice and the theory of interaction rituals. After demonstrating that the theory of rational choice is incommensurable with the ”multi-rational” premises of the grid-group model, itis indicated that an elaboration of the Goffmanian theory of interaction rituals would constitute a viable micro-foundation for the grid-group model. Finally, it is concluded that from the point of view of grid-group, ’civil society’ is a highly ambiguous category that should be replaced by the categories of ’community’ and ’isolate’.

    Abstract [sv]

Testpersonerna inkluderade i studien blev uppdelade i två grupper.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [es]

Hur matematikboken kan kompletteras för att främjanyanlända elevers matematiklärande i åk F-3: En empirisk undersökning.2017Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Promoting authenticity in theme parks: Content analysis of selected theme park home pages2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The thesis aims to identify the role of authenticity in the promotion of theme parks. The apparent contradiction of theme parks and authenticity makes this research field so essential to investigate. Theme parks are usually criticised for being fake and banal places where nothing is real or authentic. In fact, the trend goes forward to tourists that search for authentic experiences due to the always desire of singularity, originality, combined with self-realisation in a safe environment. That most of touristic places and destination are constructed and that the assessment of authenticity depends more on the observer than on the observation itself often remains disregarded. That is why, much literature is already dealing with assessment of authenticity as a construct of subjective hopes, views and expectations. The theoretical part treats this assessment and brings it in the context of theme parks. To provide a knowledge base for the analysis, the literature review reveals, that theme parks serve the trend of authenticity due to the chance to escape the daily routine and a predictability of services.

Expanding the current literature, a qualitative approach is used to analyse how authenticity is advertised by theme park suppliers on their home pages. A content analysis using the three different types of authenticity according to Wang (1999) as main categories is conducted.

The study concludes, that mainly objectivist and constructivist authenticity is promoted by the operators, triggering visitors with essential and intersectoral tourism focuses like escape from every day’s life and making unusual experiences. Suppliers play with the hyper-realistic contradiction of a theme park, imitating the outside world same as creating a border to it. On the home pages, common marketing methods like

storytelling and electronic word-of-mouth are combined with authenticity. Synonyms for authenticity, like "real" or "genuine" can be identified. Even cultural differences between the different continents are noticeable.

However, as a qualitative approach is conducted, the study does not aim for high representativeness but for a deep understanding of a limited number of theme parks. It contributes to the after date very limited amount of academic literature about authenticity promotion. Furthermore, the study can be seen as in inspiration for other theme park and touristic entertainment suppliers. However, it is recommended that future researches use quantitative methods to build numerical relations and the ability for generalisation.

Days of sick leave and inpatient care at the time of pregnancy and childbirth in relation to maternal age2017In: Scandinavian Journal of Public Health, ISSN 1403-4948, E-ISSN 1651-1905, Vol. 45, no 3, p. 222-229Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

AIMS: To explore whether older women differ from younger women with respect to sick leave and inpatient care at the time around their first pregnancy and delivery.

METHODS: This was a descriptive population-based cohort study. The study population included all 236,176 nulliparous women registered as living in Sweden who gave birth to their first singleton infant in 2006-2010. Data from nationwide Swedish registers were used. Maternal age was categorized in five-year intervals. Time was calculated in years with the delivery date as the starting point, from two years before and up to three years after delivery. Descriptive statistics were used to calculate mean values and ANOVA tables were used to obtain the 95% confidence intervals of the means. Restriction was used to reduce potential confounding.

RESULTS: Women aged ⩾35 years had a higher annual mean number of sick leave days from two years before to one year after their delivery date compared with younger women. The range for all age categories in the year before the delivery date, including pregnancy, was 15.3-37.4 mean sick leave days. The mean number of inpatient days increased with each age category during the year after the date of delivery in the range 1.4-4.3 days.

CONCLUSIONS: This first explorative study indicates the need for more knowledge on morbidity among older primiparous women. They had a higher number of days with sick leave and hospitalization in the year before and after their delivery date. This might reflect higher health risks during pregnancy and childbirth among older women; however, social factors and reverse causation might also be influential.

Longitudinal and cross-sectional study of registered nurses in Sweden who undertake a PhD showing that nurses continue to publish in English after their PhD but male nurses are more productive than female nurses2011In: Scientometrics, ISSN 0138-9130, E-ISSN 1588-2861, Vol. 87, no 2, p. 337-345Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A review of 649 PhDs undertaken by Swedish nurses and midwives found no evidence that they stop publishing in English after their PhD. The proportion of 70% for any publication in English was similar to that of MDs. A higher proportion of male than female nurses were high publishers of six or more (52% vs. 23%) and eight or more papers (44% vs. 14%) in a 5 year period. The standard of the PhDs of Swedish nurses was comparable to those of other biomedical PhDs and was consistent in pattern over the past two decades. The gender pattern of external examiners of female nurses evolved in that 1992–94, 75% were men, during 1996–97, 54% were men and from 2000 onwards 46% were men. Nurses were examined by foreign examiners in 20% of examinations. They came primarily from Norway and USA.

Midwives’ perceptions of HIV-positive women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights in urban Namibia: An interview study with ten midwives2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Background:

Namibia has challenges in the area of sexual and reproductive health and rights. Working with sexual and reproductive health care, midwives are an important facilitating factor for a better sexual and reproductive health in Namibia.

    Aim:

To explore midwives’ perceptions of HIV-positive women's sexual and reproductive health and rights in urban Namibia.

    Method:

A qualitative study with ten midwives at a hospital in Windhoek. Individual interviews were done using an interview guide. The method used for analysis was phenomenography. The phenomenon being studied was the sexual and reproductive health and rights of HIV-positive women and the phenomenon was studied through the perceptions of midwives.

    Findings:

The midwives perceived that improvements of HIV-positive women’s reproductive health were obstructed. The midwives perceived that the HIV-positive women’s reproductive possibilities and decisions were related to HIV. According to the midwives’ perceptions, sexual relations could be complicated by HIV and it was difficult for HIV-positive women to use condoms.

    Conclusion:

The findings of this study can be used to reflect on the current situation for HIV-positive women in Namibia. The midwives' perceptions highlight the need to reduce the remaining stigma related to HIV and to work towards the empowerment of HIV-positive women.

Fallolyckor bland äldre - Konsekvenser och prevention2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose

The purpose of the study is to analyze match statistics of timeouts from the 2017/18 season of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) and based on the analysis obtain coaches and players approach experiences off timeouts.

    Method

Method during the study was a mixed method, whit both a qualitative and a quantitative research through interviews and statistical compilation of statistics from SHL seson 2017/18. The study's selection to the interviews was coaches and players at the elite level in the sports ice hockey and match statistics was taken and compiled from the Swedish Ice Hockey Association's database from the 2017/18 season in SHL.

    Results

The result of the study shows that during the SHL season 2017/18 less than half of possible timeouts were taken and most of the timeouts were taken in the third period of teams in lower positions in games. During the timeouts, the trainers are most active and the interviewees' overall experience is that the powerbreak has a major impact on numbers of timeouts and that coaches are waiting to take their timeouts to the end of the matches.

    Conclusion

The conclusions of this study are that the powerbreak has a major impact on that less than half of the timeouts being use. Powerbreaks has become an extra timeout when teams gets a longer break one time per period during the matches. This means that teams save their timeout to the end of the matches. Most timeouts are taken by teams in lower positions and by teams at the bottom of the table. Which is logical since teams at the bottom of the table are more often in lower position at the end of matches when most timeouts are used.

Using ant colonies for solve the multiprocessor task graph scheduling2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The problem of scheduling a parallel program presented by a weighted directed acyclic graph (DAG) to the set of homogeneous processors for minimizing the completion time of the program has been extensively studied as academic optimization problem which occurs in optimizing the execution time of parallel algorithm with parallel computer. In this paper, we propose an application of the Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) to a multiprocessor scheduling problem (MPSP). In the MPSP, no preemption is allowed and each operation demands a setup time on the machines. The problem seeks to compose a schedule that minimizes the total completion time. We therefore rely on heuristics to find solutions since solution methods are not feasible for most problems as such. This novel heuristic searching approach to the multiprocessor based on the ACO algorithm a collection of agents cooperate to effectively explore the search space. A computational experiment is conducted on a suit of benchmark application. By comparing our algorithm result obtained to that of previous heuristic algorithm, it is evince that the ACO algorithm exhibits competitive performance with small error ratio.

Teaching Mathematics in English to Swedish Speaking Students: A systematic review of strategies for teaching mathematics to second language learners2016Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The Swedish government has authorised the teaching of mathematics in English to Swedish speaking students. Much of that teaching is performed by foreign trained native English speaking teachers lacking training in second language learners. This systematic review summarises international studies from the last ten years that deal with the teaching of mathematics to second language learners. The review shows that second language students working in a bilingual environment achieve higher rates of content and language knowledge than learners in a monolingual environment. This study also summarises some of the teacher practices that are effective for teaching mathematics in English to second language learners.

    Abstract [en]

Over 20,000 Swedish lower high school students are currently learning mathematics in English but little research has been conducted in this area. This study looks into the question of how much second language learner training teachers teaching mathematics in English to Swedish speaking students have acquired and how many of those teachers are using effective teaching practices for second language learners. The study confirms earlier findings that report few teachers receive training in second language learning but indicates that some of the teaching practices shown to be effective with second language learners are being used in some Swedish schools

Oljudens musik: En revolution i kompositionsteknik?2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Noise music is created around sounds not often welcome in a musical context. Since the birth of electronic music in the 1950s a new perspective on composing has emerged. In electronic music, sounds and their timbre are as much important as melody, harmony and rhythm. This composing perspective is not often observed. Therefore I have examined a musical genre that stretches the boundaries of what we consider music, sound, noise, beautiful and terrible. The aim of this thesis is to investigate what aesthetic ideals noise musicians have when they create music. I examine the composing processes of three noise musicians, by asking the following questions: Do you compose in advance or do you improvise, how do your control of sound look like, how do you use the human voice and how do you categorize sound? The thesis is constructed around interviews I have made with the musicians and an extensive historical background concentrated on the alternative composing techniques that has led to the development of noise music. Among the results I found that these noise musicians always improvise with material, but the real essence of noise music is the character of the sounds, not their origins or material. Composing in advance for sound is a lot more difficult than traditional composing. Another result is that these noise musicians have extensive control of their instruments and can produce the sounds they wanted. They point out the importance of instruments that produce sound not directly controlled by themselves, something that create a musical quality that they aspire.

    Abstract [sv]

A study has been conducted to investigate how log houses will meet the new requirements regarding U-value and specific energy use with primary energy factor as a basis, which will be put into use in 2017. In the study, two houses have been investigated. Both houses were constructed with 200 mm thick logs without any additional isolation. Both houses have geothermal heating systems. The study found that the new requirements will be rough against timber house constructions with geothermal or electricity as a heating system, since a primary energy figure of 1.6 will be multiplied by the total energy consumption when heated by electricity.

Master Thesis on Information Management: The implications of organizational interventions on the information management motivation (IMM) of information intensive workers 2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Background:

The following thesis investigates the four dimensions of a newly developed concept called information management motivation (IMM) (a person's perceived willingness to make effective use of information), to identify how organizational interventions can affect each of these dimensions. These four dimensions are information proactiveness (willingness to actively use information and learn), transparency (willingness to disclose negative information), formality (willingness to readily use official sources of information) and sharing (willingness to distribute objective information in a collaborative fashion). The focus is set on so-called information intensive workers, defined as professional knowledge workers as well as those (information) workers strongly depending on information to perform their work, since they are heavily influenced by information management, and thus, present the optimal information source for the exploration of the IMM concept.

    Aim:

The overall research question of the thesis is "How do information intensive workers perceive different organizational interventions as affecting their information management motivation (IMM)?". This involves exploring organizational interventions which influence IMM in a supporting and hindering manner (objective 1&2) and understanding how or why these interventions are perceived as influential (objective 3).

    Methodology:

Qualitative research via semi-structured interviews in two cases was done. Case 1 is a small German landscaping architecture company (total of 9 employees), in which 5 landscaping architects/designers were interviewed. Case 2 is made up by a large international cruise liner, with strong hierarchical structure, multinational employees and vertical communication, in which 6 employees of the Guest Service Department were interviewed.

    Findings:

Intrinsic motivation was emphasized as of key importance for information proactiveness. For information transparency it was considered most importantly to provide a save and supportive environment to minimize the fear of (psychological) harm. Key driver of motivation for information formality depends on the availability of useful sources and employees’ capabilities to use them. Lastly, open communication culture and positive team atmosphere was considered prerequisite for motivation for all dimensions, above all information sharing.

    Conclusion:

Information intensive workers mostly perceive organizational interventions as affecting their IMM by providing the appropriate tools to develop needed capabilities, or by providing a stimulating working environment to act out their already existing intrinsic motivation.

    Abstract [en]

Background: The demands and expectations on a nurse in the emergency room

are high. They are responsible for many patients and have to make many decisions

on their own, sometimes with very short reflection time. They face a wide variety

of patients with different problems and personalities, each requiring their own

method of approach and interaction in order for him or her to feel acknowledged.

Aim: The aim of the literature review is to examine patient's experiences of being

cared for in an emergency room.

Method: Articles for the work has been searched in different databases. Articles

in-question has been read and the relevant finding has been highlighted, to analyze

    and compile the results.

Results: The analysis resulted in three subheadings: Information, Treatment and

Care environment, with sectioning of positive and negative experiences. Many

patients were satisfied with the care, but had low expectations from the start.

Conclusion: There is much that needs to be changed to allow patients to have a

more positive experience of the emergency room. Care units must work harder

with to ensure that patients will feel secure and safe, for example, better

information on waiting times and a treatment where the nurse sees the whole

    patient.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is thus to see how the recruitment process is made in the context of public administration and what kind of aspects that can affect the implementation and outcome of the recruitment process. To this study qualitative method has been used. A case study has been combined with interviews and a vignette to explore the respondent’s approaches and experiences of recruitment. A total of seven people who all work with recruitment have been interviewed. The theoretical starting points that underpin this study reflect areas of recruitment and selection, subjectivity, sustainability, public sector management, leadership and organizational culture. The results of this study has been analysed by a content analysis that focuses on patternmaking to get a greater understanding of the answers given by the respondents. This study shows that there are several crucial factors that can interrupt and affect the recruitment process in the context of public administration and therefore important to take in consideration. For instance is subjectivity a factor that’s always present and therefore inevitable. No matter how much work the respondents put in to making the process of recruitment objective and competence- based, subjective factors like personal charismas and first impressions still takes in consideration in the overall evaluation of the candidate. This factor also has a lot to do with the competence, knowledge and experience that the recruiting managers possess. The study also shows the importance of the HR-function as a key role in the organization both to support the recruiting managers and for the development of sustainability in recruitment as well as in the whole organization.
