Differences in muscle activity during hand dexterity tasks between women with arthritis and a healthy reference group2014In: BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, ISSN 1471-2474, E-ISSN 1471-2474, Vol. 15, article id 154Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background. Impaired hand function is common in patients with arthritis and it affects performance of daily activities; thus, hand exercises are recommended. There is little information on the extent to which the disease affects activation of the flexor and extensor muscles during these hand-dexterity tasks. The purpose of this study was to compare muscle activation during such tasks in subjects with arthritis and in a healthy reference group.

Methods. Muscle activation was measured in m. extensor digitorium communis (EDC) and in m. flexor carpi radialis (FCR) with surface electromyography (EMG) in women with rheumatoid arthritis (RA, n = 20), hand osteoarthritis (HOA, n = 16) and in a healthy reference group (n = 20) during the performance of four daily activity tasks and four hand exercises. Maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) was measured to enable intermuscular comparisons, and muscle activation is presented as %MVIC.

Results. The arthritis group used a higher %MVIC than the reference group in both FCR and EDC when cutting with a pair of scissors, pulling up a zipper and—for the EDC—also when writing with a pen and using a key (p < 0.02). The exercise “rolling dough with flat hands” required the lowest %MVIC and may be less effective in improving muscle strength.

Conclusions. Women with arthritis tend to use higher levels of muscle activation in daily tasks than healthy women, and wrist extensors and flexors appear to be equally affected. It is important that hand training programs reflect real-life situations and focus also on extensor strength.

Patienters upplevelse av bedsiderapportering: En litteraturöversikt2015Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: To compile the current studies on patients' experience and perception of bedside report in hospital care.

Methods: The literature review was based on 16 scientific articles, eight qualitative, seven quantitative and one mixed methods. The articles were searched through databases Cinahl and PubMed and analyzed using content analysis, five themes were created based on the analysis.

Results: Five themes were created based on the result: treatment and communication, expenditure of time, participation, safe and secure care and confidential information.

Patients were generally positive to the method and felt that they were involved in their care. They stated that the transfer of information between nurse and patient was an important aspect that contributed to a sense of participation and safe care. Lack of time during the bedside reporting and that the nurses used an incomprehensible language were deficiencies raised by the patients related to the method.

Conclusion: It is important that the nurses strive to create a balance of power in the relationship with the patient. This can be achieved by giving time and to adapt the language to the unique patient. This literature review can provide an understanding of how patients can experience bedside report and the factors that promote and inhibit participation. The result can be used as a guide in the introduction of the method in clinical practice.

Utfackningsväggar i trä: En tid- och kostnadsjämförelse mellan prefabricerade och platsbyggda byggmetoder2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

To win procurements today, it is important that you as an entrepreneur choose the most effective resource and production methods. That already in the calculation stage, decide how high degree of prefabrication the project should have, is favorable to promptly adapt the workplace in order to get the best output.

In Mora, Skanska has a block workshop that among other things manufactures curtain walls. Skanska has expressed a desire for a study of the differences in time and cost between their precast curtain walls and site-built curtain walls in order to see for which construction projects it may be appropriate to make use of their precast curtain walls.

The purpose of this project is to facilitate the choice of production method for the manufacture of curtain walls, depending on the construction project's requirements regarding:

    • If the project has a short or long timetable.
    • How many square meters of curtain-wall the project needs.
    • Distance to block workshop.

The work is defined to include construction projects that have a bearing frame with lightweight curtain walls of wood. The production methods studied for building curtain walls in wood is prefabrication and site-built.

The production cost has defined to only conclude the cost of the work and the expenses of the workplace, no costs for the materials that are built-in are included. The cost of the built-in materials is assumed in this work to be the same whether the curtain walls are site built or prefabricated.

With unit times from the block workshop, has a production time for prefabrication of curtain walls been calculated. For the site-built curtain wall, unit times from Nybyggnadslistan 1999 has been retrieved and used to calculate a manufacturing time for building the wall in place. A cost benefit analysis has been done comparing the different manufacturing cost. The cost benefit analysis show the amount of wall area required to choose prefabricated over place built at the highest profit.

The result shows that to manufacture and mount one square meter of prefabricated curtain wall takes 0,135 hours less time than that place build the same amount. Time on site is reduced by 0,578 hours per square meter when using precast curtain walls.

The result also shows that the cost to manufacture one square meter of curtain-wall is 32.77 SEK lower than that place build the same amount of curtain-wall. The thing that pulls up the cost of precast curtain walls is the transport. A fully loaded truck with 370 m² of wall can be transported 43 Swedish miles before profitability ceiling is reached.

The time at the construction place, is getting shorter when using prefabricated curtain walls, leading to reduced costs in the workplace.

For a construction project located at a distance of 30 Swedish miles from block workshop, is it profitable to choose prefabricated curtain walls, if the object needs 256 m² or more square meters of wall. For construction projects that require a smaller number of square meters of curtain walls, it is more profitable to use the site-built curtain walls. Especially if the construction project is located at a far distance from the block workshop.

Important conclusions from this thesis are:

    • Shorter production time for precast curtain walls, which results in a lower production cost.
    • The time on the construction site is reduced by the use of precast curtain walls.
    • For long trips, a larger number of square meters precast curtain walls is needed to make the use of prefab to be profitable.
    • The use of precast curtain walls means less need for storage of materials on the construction site.

    Abstract [en]

Background: Postoperative pain is often undertreated. There are several

reasons why it is important with good pain relief after surgery. Ease of the

acute pain but also to prevent complications and long lasting pain.

Aim: To describe the nurse´s assessment and nursing care of postoperative

    pain in adults.

Methods: Literature review based on 16 articles, published between 2010-

2016. The articles were found in the databases PubMed, CINAHL and Web

    of Science.

Results: The nurse´s attitude and time for creating a relationship with the

patient, is a prerequisite for correct pain assessment. Apart from

administration of analgesics, there is nursing care that can relieve pain,

which the nurse can use, for example change position or give information.

Conclusion: There are many factors that influence the nurse´s pain

assessment, where the patient´s participation and the nurse´s attitude are

important components. Also nursing care can ease pain.

Musikaliska kännetecken i Max Martins produktioner2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract:

It often means a grievous grief for relatives when a beloved person's life is coming to an end, which also means that the life you have collectively shared is coming to an end. In accordance with person-centered care, health care professionals should work for a partnership between relatives, the patient and the healthcare professional. In palliative care, relatives often take a major responsibility for the patient's care, while at the same time they are in crisis and they also have a need for support and information. Care interventions to the patient are often based on the needs that the relative´s communicated. In order to carry out a person-centered care, it is therefore important to make clear what experiences the relatives and the health professionals have of communication in palliative care.

    Aim:

The aim was to compile studies describing how communication is experienced by relatives and healthcare professionals in palliative care.

    Methods:

A literature review based on 15 scientific articles, all of which were collected in the CINAHL database. The articles were of qualitative and quantitative design.

    Results:

It has positive significance for the patient and the relative´s that initially already at a breakpoint communication include relative´s. Structured communication models between related and health professionals favored the dialog between them. It was considered difficult to structure how communication shall be performed, when communication takes place at an individual level.

    Conclusions:

There were differences of the quality of communication depending on whether the healthcare professional worked in specialized palliative care. When relative´s felt insecure and anxious, it affected the patients. Health professionals experienced differences in what the patient wanted for arrangements and what the relative´s mediated that the patient needed.

Digital media and the accelerationof resistance: Findings from the 2010/11 Tunisian revolution2019In: Sociologisk forskning, ISSN 0038-0342, Vol. 56, no 3-4, p. 209-231Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article is concerned with providing empirical evidence relating to the use of digital media and resistance during the so-called Arab Spring events. These events have been widely acknowledged as a case where digital media significantly contributed to the successful attainment of movements’ objectives. The use of such innovative technologies has been tied to the characteristics and, ultimately, the ends of these movements, with their ‘youthful’, ‘leaderless’ and ‘spontaneous’ nature reflecting Western-orientated practices. However, the analysis presented here utilises interview data obtained from participants in the 2010/11 Tunisian Revolution, detailing their perspectives and explanations of digital media’s role. The data and analysis show that while such technologies were a useful tool, their prominence has been exaggerated and offers a flawed understanding of the events. Rather, the social change being pursued during the Tunisian revolution was profound. Therefore, the deeper implications of the common emphasis on digital media in the literature is explored, with Rosa’s (2015) assessment of social acceleration being informative for elaborating on the nuances of these technologies’ use during the 2010/11 events. With technical acceleration linked to the prominence given to online networks’ utility for resistance, Rosa’s analysis of such acceleration in relation to acceleration of social change and the pace of life helps to clarify why looking beyond online technology for the implications of resistance during the so-called Arab Spring is so important. In this regard, one of these implications is introduced, namely the constructive forms of resistance that may provide a space for alternative understandings of modernity.

    Abstract [en]

The Swedish model for full employment is under reconstruction. Increasing unemployment rates and sick-leaves is challenging traditional Swedish labour market policies. At the same time new institutions and actors have entered the labour market. Nowadays, half the Swedish workforce is covered by collective agreements on how to manage redundancies due to structural changes at workplaces. In the future these new institutions will influence the role of traditional actors such as the governmental Labour Market Board and the Employment services offices. Neo-classical economists have recommended lower levels of unemployment insurances and social security to manage the problems. Contrary to these economists we argue that the solutions put forward by new collective agreements, institutions and actors show that the Swedish model can be developed. In the article this new institutional infrastructure of insurances, temporary work agencies, security funds and collective agreements that has emerged during the last decade is described. If the heavily centralistic labour market policy could be replaced by new efforts of different actors on local and regional level the Swedish labour market model could be filled with a new content in line with the demands from a modern working life.

Lärarstudenter GIH 2008 delrapport 1: 20092010Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine what gives employees wellbeing and positive

emotions at work. The study was conducted through interviews with six employees, at four

banking- and insurance offices in the middle of Sweden. The results were analyzed with the

help of previous research and theories.

The result shows that what creates positive emotions and well-being to a large degree are

relationships, both with colleagues and customers. Positive emotions can have a very high

ability to spread among colleagues, customers and the organization. It also showed that it is

important that there is a balance between work life and private life and the demands and

control at work. Being able to study wellbeing at work from an interaction perspective, which

integrates both the individual and the organization also proved to be important to work with

    these issues.

    Abstract [en]

This is a qualitative study with the purpose to identify health factors within a unit of Stockholm’s city and examine what is necessary for a continued preservation. Furthermore, the aim is to investigate what support is required for the preservation and the HR function's role in this aspect. The work unit is, in the aspect of sickness absence, a wellbeing group who is facing changes in work labor and goal setting due to a recent government shift.

A query tool was used to produce the eight most important dimensions of the attractive work and a discussion was held around these under a focus group interview with the employees of the work unit. The results showed that the most important dimensions were, among other things, working hours and relationships.

Furthermore, it was shown that a balance between work-life and private-life is of great importance to employee’s health and well-being. In order to continue to preserve the good work, the empirical data showed that the relationship within the group and the leader was a key factor and that the HR function, the personnel strategy department, only contributes an administrative and guiding role in the issue of support.

The study’s conclusions include the following: that the preservation of health factors require existence to be comprehensible, manageable, and meaningful. But the study also concluded that employees need reasonable requirements in relation to their scope for manoeuver. A further conclusion is the need for a change in leadership behavior in subsequent stages when the group will possibly enter in a new phase of maturity due to changing circumstances.

The authors also conclude that health factors are partly based on the individual’s life situation, but the balance between work-life and private-life is certainly important for most people. The HR function, the personnel strategy department, has an informative and administrative role in the issue of support and the authors believe that there is logic to this role. In terms of the size of the organization, it’s easier to turn psychosocial issues to occupational health services or a psychologist group and labor law assistance or information from the HR function.

Pedagogues in the borderland of their social task: dealing with family law proceedings, threats and violence

Drawing upon an explorative study of family law proceedings from a school perspective, the aim of this paper is to examine the school staff’s strategies for solving or coping with problematic situations in this context. Gendered conflicts between adults and violence are extreme cases for pedagogues in school and preschool. How do the staff cope with their own and the children’s vulnerability? Based upon interviews with 22 informants, the staff’s strategies are outlined and discussed in relation to organizational and professional circumstances and intersecting social relations of power. An analytical construction of six types of proactive and reactive strategies, ranging from distance keeping to normalization of own exposure, is utilized in the analysis. Findings suggest that the staff’s strategies to handle challenging events in this context vary with the parent’s gender, class position and ethnicity. Further, it is argued that creating a sense of safety and promoting learning among the children may be obstructed by lack of support from the school’s organization, demands on staff to perform customer oriented attitudes towards parents and lack of clarity concerning the limits of the social task. Conflicts between the organization and profession on the one hand and the educational and the social task on the other hand, are thus illuminated. In conclusion, a further aim of this article is to contribute to broader discussions on men’s violence against women and children – in families as well as in workplaces and in the intersection between these two areas.

De tre frågeställningarna är: 1. Vilket syfte hade Christopher-gillet? 2. Vilka och hur många var medlemmar? 3. Vad ingick i Christopher-gillets verksamhet?

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to estimate willingness to pay and consumer surplus

for the Peace & Love festival 2016 and then compare it to an earlier study of

willingness to pay and consumer surplus for the Peace & Love festival 2011. The

study of the festival year 2011 is written by Dahlqvist and Laham (2016). The

study of the festival year 2016 is done by means of a regression analysis. The

analysis is built on data from a survey conducted during the festival. The visitors

self-reported total budget, which is the dependent variable, is treated as their

maximum willingness-to-pay. The independent variable gender was found not to

    be statistically significant,

ceteris paribus, while income has a positive effect on

the total budget by an average of 281 SEK per income group of 10 000 SEK

(monthly and before taxes). Furthermore, it was found that a tourist spends in

average 652 SEK more than a non-tourist. Moreover, if the respondents paid the

ticket themselves it affects the total budget negatively by an average of 1 695 SEK

while the number of days they spent at the festival increases the total budget by an

average of 413 SEK for each day. Lastly each additional year of age decreases the

total budget with 17 SEK, on average. When the ratio between an independent

variable and a dependent variable is described, every other independent variable is

    presumed to be held constant,

ceteris paribus. Visitors average willingness to pay

was estimated at 2 223 SEK per visitor and 31 122 000 SEK for all 14 000 visitors.

Average consumption was estimated at 2 444 SEK per visitor and 34 211 965 SEK

for all visitors. Additionally, the consumer surplus is estimated at -221 SEK per

visitor and for all visitors the consumer surplus is estimated at -3 089 965 SEK,

which means a change of -130 percent from the year 2011 when the estimated

consumer surplus was around 37 million SEK.

Företags potentiella manipulation av tillväxttakt i goodwillnedskrivningstestet: En kvantitativ studie av svenska och finska börsnoterade företag2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background and problem: With the new standard IAS 36, companies have to estimate the long-term growth rate in the goodwill impairment test. This presents an opportunity to manipulate the growth rate and thereby avoid or implement goodwill impairment.

Problem: How do the selected variables affect potential manipulation of estimated growth rate?

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to explain what influences companies to report too high or too low growth rates in the goodwill impairment test.

Method: This study is based on a quantitative method where the sample consists of all Swedish and Finnish listed companies with goodwill. Based on existing knowledge we have formulated four hypotheses that have been tested against empirical data.

Results and Conclusion: The results of this study show no significant correlation between the dependent variable manipulation and the independent variables size, leverage, industry and accounting oversight. The descriptive statistics show that almost half of the companies manipulate the growth rate.

    Abstract [sv]

Neuropsykiatriska diagnosers funktion i skolan: En kvalitativ studie om neuropsykiatriska diagnoser i skolan.2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

kopplas in.

    Abstract [en]

    Aim

The purpose of this study was to investigate if relative age effect occurs at Swedish cross-country ski schools and if there were a differences in the presence among boys and girls, and between Riksidrottsgymnasier (Country-wide sport academy) and Nationell Idrottsutbildning (National sport academy).

    Method

To answer the aim, statistical data were analyzed using a Pearson Chi2-test. The analysis has been done by examining birth month, sex and education among students at Swedish cross-country ski schools between 2010-2015.

    Results

The result shows that there is a significant evidence of relative age effect at Swedish cross-country ski schools (p= <0,05). When the results were partial between Riksidrottsgymnasier and Nationell Idrottsutbildning, the relative age effect was only seen at Riksidrottsgymnasierna. There were no significant evidence for relative age effect when boys and girls where analyzed separately.

    Conclusion

The results show that relative age effect appears on Swedish cross-country ski schools; however, there were some varies between analyzed variables. Strongest evidence for relative age effect was seen at Riksidrottsgymnaiserna.

Further research is needed to get a overview of the consequences of relative age effect at cross-country ski schools, and the consequences it has in Swedish cross-country skiing overall, both for younger and older skiers.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Research has established that school performance relates: (i) negatively with poor mental health during childhood and (ii) positively with family socioeconomic resources. In this article, we examine the potentially moderating effects of family resources on the relationship between school performance and poor mental health, using register data covering all children born in Sweden in 1990. The dependent variable is graduation from upper secondary school. We perform separate analyses for girls and boys. Our results indicate that compensatory effects of the socioeconomic resources of the family on the risk of graduation failure among those with poor mental health is more pronounced among girls compared to boys.

    Abstract [sv]

Arbetet resulterade i två fungerande prototyper.

    Abstract [sv]

The aim with this study is to analyze how Swedish social services interpret men's and women's needs and whether it is possible to discern any pattern in the social services investigations. The following questions are of importance: how men and women are described in the assistance investigations and if there are any differences between men and women in assistance investigations. The analysis is based on a qualitative text analysis of twenty assistance investigations. The investigations have been studied gradually and interesting patterns emerged which were analyzed by the theory of gender. The results are multifaceted and demonstrate on the one hand that men and women receive the help they apply for and the assessment of their needs is conducted in an equitable way. On the other hand, the study demonstrates that there is a difference in how men and women are described in the investigations.

Avskaffandet av revisionsplikten i Sverige: Vilka faktorer ligger bakom mikroföretagens numera frivilliga val av revision?2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In November 2010, Swedish micro-enterprises were given the opportunity to either

resign or ask for audit due to the abolishment of audit requirement for these companies.

The Government's intention with the removal of the audit requirement for microenterprises

was to make them more competitive and adapted to the international

business environment (SOU 2008: 32). The fact that Sweden joined the other EU

member states that had chosen to make a voluntary audit as late as 2010 makes this a

highly topical subject. Against this background the purpose of the study is to provide

explanations and thereby a better understanding of what affects the Swedish microenterprises

demand for voluntary audit. Existing research on Swedish companies in this

area are completely lacking or insufficient, and therefore, our study provides the

necessary knowledge contribution in one, for the Swedish business sector, important

issues. The method selected holds a quantitative approach, to achieve our purpose a

comprehensive survey of all limited companies in Sweden were implemented. The

study is based on companies' financial information that were collected from Business

Retriever with the financial year of 2013. Based on previous research that has taken

place in foreign markets and business economics we formulated three hypotheses which

were tested against empirical data. Our study investigated which variables that can

explain the choice of audit in the companies which is not required to be audited. The

results of the study show – in accordance with the first two hypotheses – that a

company's size as well as a company's leverage has a significant positive impact on the

micro-enterprises demand for a voluntary audit. Further micro-enterprises operating in

the manufacturing industry to a significantly less extent chooses voluntary audit. The

results are contradicting with the expected result and is therefore rejected.

Classification of structural timber by decision trees: a comparison to the certified method2009In: Forest products journal, ISSN 0015-7473, Vol. 59, no 3, p. 53-61Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This work is an example of how to adapt a classification method, in this case a classification tree, to the present standardized method for the development of settings for strength grading machines. Data from commercially available industrial strength grading equipment were used on a large sample (approximately 1440 pieces) of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L. Karsten)) in various sawn dimensions. The equipment is a multisensor scanning device combining planar X-ray and resonance frequency measurement. Destructive testing was done according to European standard EN408. The goal was to make the classification, based on machine data, as close as possible to the optimum grading, which was done according to standard. Two different approaches for classification by cost-sensitive decision trees were applied to the data and compared to classification accredited according to EN14081. Classification accuracy increased from 64% correctly classified to 73%, and a reduction from 33% False Negative to 23% was achieved. False Positive increased from 3% to 4%. The outcome was an increase in value for the producer by 0.9%–2.1% at 2007 average price level. The improvement came mainly from an in-yield increase in C30 by 10%.

Olika versioner – olika känslor?: - en studie om personers upplevelser av en låt gestaltad i två olika versioner.2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Analyzing the Translation of Japanese Humor2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to examine the translation of Japanese humor. The goal is to determine how approximate the translation of a comedic work can be to the original and through what strategies. This is accomplished by analyzing seven different verbal jokes in Japanese to their subtitled English translations. First the jokes are transcribed, then a comparison of the similarity between the source joke to the target joke using the knowledge resources from The General Theory of Verbal Humor is attempted. Then the two texts are analyzed line by line to determine which of Peter Newmark’s translation procedures can be identified. The analyzation of the jokes using the General Theory of Verbal Humor showed that similarities in all five of the six knowledge resources can often be achieved. Similarity in the knowledge resource language may need to be sacrificed for a more natural sounding text. The usage of translation procedures proves to be enough to achieve a close approximate between the source joke and the target joke, however the over usage of reductions may prove problematic.

Prevention av stora perinealbristningar vid Sveriges förlossningsavdelningar: En kartläggningsstudie2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Methodology used in studies reporting chronic kidney disease prevalence: a systematic literature review2015In: Nephrology, Dialysis and Transplantation, ISSN 0931-0509, E-ISSN 1460-2385, Vol. 30, no Supp. 4, p. iv6-iv16Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: Many publications report the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in the general population. Comparisons across studies are hampered as CKD prevalence estimations are influenced by study population characteristics and laboratory methods.

METHODS: For this systematic review, two researchers independently searched PubMed, MEDLINE and EMBASE to identify all original research articles that were published between 1 January 2003 and 1 November 2014 reporting the prevalence of CKD in the European adult general population. Data on study methodology and reporting of CKD prevalence results were independently extracted by two researchers.

RESULTS: We identified 82 eligible publications and included 48 publications of individual studies for the data extraction. There was considerable variation in population sample selection. The majority of studies did not report the sampling frame used, and the response ranged from 10 to 87%. With regard to the assessment of kidney function, 67% used a Jaffe assay, whereas 13% used the enzymatic assay for creatinine determination. Isotope dilution mass spectrometry calibration was used in 29%. The CKD-EPI (52%) and MDRD (75%) equations were most often used to estimate glomerular filtration rate (GFR). CKD was defined as estimated GFR (eGFR) <60 mL/min/1.73 m(2) in 92% of studies. Urinary markers of CKD were assessed in 60% of the studies. CKD prevalence was reported by sex and age strata in 54 and 50% of the studies, respectively. In publications with a primary objective of reporting CKD prevalence, 39% reported a 95% confidence interval.

CONCLUSIONS: The findings from this systematic review showed considerable variation in methods for sampling the general population and assessment of kidney function across studies reporting CKD prevalence. These results are utilized to provide recommendations to help optimize both the design and the reporting of future CKD prevalence studies, which will enhance comparability of study results.

CKD prevalence varies across the European general population2016In: Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, ISSN 1046-6673, E-ISSN 1533-3450, Vol. 27, no 7, p. 2135-2147Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

CKD prevalence estimation is central to CKD management and prevention planning at the population level. This study estimated CKD prevalence in the European adult general population and investigated international variation in CKD prevalence by age, sex, and presence of diabetes, hypertension, and obesity. We collected data from 19 general-population studies from 13 European countries. CKD stages 1-5 was defined as eGFR<60 ml/min per 1.73 m(2), as calculated by the CKD-Epidemiology Collaboration equation, or albuminuria >30 mg/g, and CKD stages 3-5 was defined as eGFR<60 ml/min per 1.73 m(2). CKD prevalence was age- and sex-standardized to the population of the 27 Member States of the European Union (EU27). We found considerable differences in both CKD stages 1-5 and CKD stages 3-5 prevalence across European study populations. The adjusted CKD stages 1-5 prevalence varied between 3.31% (95% confidence interval [95% CI], 3.30% to 3.33%) in Norway and 17.3% (95% CI, 16.5% to 18.1%) in northeast Germany. The adjusted CKD stages 3-5 prevalence varied between 1.0% (95% CI, 0.7% to 1.3%) in central Italy and 5.9% (95% CI, 5.2% to 6.6%) in northeast Germany. The variation in CKD prevalence stratified by diabetes, hypertension, and obesity status followed the same pattern as the overall prevalence. In conclusion, this large-scale attempt to carefully characterize CKD prevalence in Europe identified substantial variation in CKD prevalence that appears to be due to factors other than the prevalence of diabetes, hypertension, and obesity.

Harold Pinter: A Night Out: A Study in the Political Connotations And the Abuse of Power2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Harold Pinter’s A Night Out is a significant but rarely produced piece of drama. Therefore, there is very little criticism to support or contradict my argument. The reason why I chose to do my essay on this particular play is to open doors for academic research and to try and make it an equal to its sister plays. I will raise questions and topics to prove the play is worth the readers’ time and effort and that A Night Out is a sharp piece of political theatre. Although at first glance it is a simple enough story, a straightforward tale of the nasty consequences of motherly love when it is pushed to the limit, on deeper inspection, a more far reaching and complex analysis of the abuse of power can be observed. The play offers a variety of themes, including: interpersonal power struggles, failed attempts at communication, antagonistic relationships, the threat of impending or past violence, the struggle for survival or identity, domination and submission, politics, lies and verbal, physical, psychological and sexual abuse. The prevailing theme in the play is the abuse of power: powerful parties oppressing weaker ones, and the results of the oppressed party looking for a vent in someone even weaker than themselves.

Oscar Wilde’s “The Happy Prince”: The Hidden Messages and the Debate on the Target Audience2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Oscar Wilde’s fairytales have been read to children for more than a century. Nevertheless, since the time of their publication in 1888 and 1891, the target audience of The Happy Prince and Other Tales and A House of Pomegranates have been the concern of critics. Delving into the context behind the rich and colourful imagery, one can find implications of homosexuality, the Paterian aesthetic and religious connotations. According to Carol Tattersall, The Happy Prince and Other Tales successfully mislead the public that it is innocent of any intention to undermine established standards of living or writing. Tattersall’s argument is based on comparing the first collection to Wilde’s second, A House of Pomegranates, which was perceived as “offensive and immoral” (136). On the other hand, William Butler Yeats states in his introduction to The Complete Works of Oscar Wilde that overall the reviewers of The Happy Prince and Other Tales were hostile because of Wilde’s aesthetic views (ixxvi). But Yeats overlooks the fact that Wilde was very pleased and proud, dashing notes to friends and reviewers and signing copies to many people (Tattersall 129). In general, the reception of Wilde’s first collection was more positive than that of the second because it was milder and more subtle in its controversial themes.

Consumer reactions to different forms of CSR communication2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Aim

Companies around the world are making sizeable investments into CSR

initiatives, but ensuring appropriate returns on these investments remains

challenging. Therefore, it is of value to study the communication of corporate

CSR efforts. The purpose of this study is to investigate how consumers react to

rational versus emotional message strategies in CSR communication. Two

categories of consumer reactions were considered: trust and purchase intention.

    Methods

Qualitative research with four focus groups was conducted. Participants

discussed three texts regarding a CSR project, utilising a rational, emotional and

a hybrid rational-emotional message strategy respectively. The conversations

focused on trust towards the communication and purchase intention.

    Results

Trust - All of the respondents viewed the rational text over the emotional text as

more trustworthy, but they most positively reacted to the combined strategy.

Rational information was viewed as more reliable by many participants, with

emotional cues adding value by better holding their attention.

Purchase intention – Participants more positively reacted to the rational CSR

communication strategy, compared to an emotional strategy. For approximately

half of respondents, the hybrid strategy targeting both rational and emotional

cues was the most successful in terms of purchase intention. Upon further

analysis, it was identified that this division in respondents’ opinions may reflect a

gender difference, where men portrayed the more task oriented and women the

    socially sensitive consumers.

    Conclusions

The findings support previous research championing the use of rational strategies

over emotional strategies in CSR communication. A number of managerial

implications that can be used by companies in order to better communicate their

CSR activities and increase returns on CSR-related investments are provided.

Kunskap för kreativitet: En undersökning av kreativitet i teori och praktik2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

    Background

Customers demand in the online market for fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) has been increasing at a steady rate. The largest actors on a market are recognizing an increase in demand and are aware of the need to expand their sales channels. While, the smaller companies have created the market demand actively, they must also address the issue of customer loyalty and retention in order to not lose market shares when the market situation is changed by the larger actors. The new transformed competitive situation will force the companies to focus on the consumers through strategy and most importantly to establish customer loyalty.

    Aim

The aim is to increase the knowledge of companies who entered a market early as well as how they keep their customers loyal when the competitive situation changes.

    Methodology

To accomplish the aim a qualitative study of the company MatHem has been done, to reach a generalized conclusion. Literature and articles have been examined and an interview has been conducted in order to achieve a final conclusion.

    Conclusion

The investigated company keeps their customers loyal by having a high overall quality. Which means that they have high quality products, well-functioning customer service, exceed customer expectations and a wide assortment. When the competitive situation changes, the company has no special strategies to keep their customers loyal because the company did not see the other actors as competitors. The company is the most expensive actor on the market, but differentiates itself with organic products to obtain loyal customers.

Den etnifierade urbana fattigdomen och välfärdsstatens reaktioner2005In: Sociologisk forskning, ISSN 0038-0342, Vol. 42, no 4, p. 57-78Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In year 1998 the Swedish government adopted an ambitious urban renewal policy (URP). One of its main elements was to combat social exclusion in a number of housing areas in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö. Between 2002 and 2004 I have been studying implementation of this policy and its ideas in five neighborhoods in Stockholm. Based on previous research I claim that this form of ethnified urban poverty, in popular discourses named urban segregation, is being generated by the structural unemployment and by the so-called ”ethnic factor” embodied in processes of stigmatization and discrimination. URP has been set up to assist the general welfare policy to challenge and ultimately solve this social problem.

In this article I focus on three problems inherited in the policy implementation: disparity between theory and practice concerning the basic ideas of URP; the anomaly concerning the time aspect and an extreme unwillingness by the state to follow up the implementation process. One of the main conclusions is that URP has failed in its ”mission” to assist the general welfare policy because, firstly, the local analysis of what generates the social exclusion highlighted only the structural unemployment. The impact of discrimination and stigmatization was omitted. Secondly, URP:s practical implementation was particularistic, non-relational and anomalistic.
