    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The overall aim of this study is divided into two parts, firstly to analyze the view of

four swedish upper secondary school students on what the meaning with religious

education in Sweden should be. Secondly, to analyze how these four students experience

their education in religion and compare it with their teachers view on the meaning

of religious education and how she conducts the teaching. It is an empirical

study and the results are based on semistructural interviews made individually with

each participant. The analytical approach is a hermeneutic analysis with interpretation

    as the main focus.

The findings and the result of the study indicates that the swedish students view the

religious education as an important subject to understand and explore their own

worldviews, other peoples views, traditions and differences. The students and the

teacher have similar thoughts on what the meaning with religious education should

be, but in practise the students lack an inside perspective of religions, a meeting with

people who identify themselves as religious. The teacher however does not include

this in her education, nor does she speak of this during the interviews.

The results also show that the swedish students thoughts about religious education is

very similiar to what previous research has shown is lacking in the swedish education

in religion. In summary, both the students and previous research points out that the

inside perspective in religious education is very important to be able to reach the

goals of the curriculom in the subject, which include a development of understanding

    different religions and people.

Vad är meningen med religionskunskapsämnet?: Fyra svenska forskares syn på ämnets mening i jämförelsemed fem engelska religionsdidaktiska modeller2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this literature study is to find out how four Swedish scholars identify themeaning of the subject religious education in Sweden. Thereafter the result of theSwedish scholars interpretation is to be compared with British theories on how religiouseducation may be applied in schools through different strategies and principlesdeveloped by five different RE scholars. The method used in this thesis is a systematic literature study with a qualitative hermeneuticmethod. The empirical literature is analyzed and interpreted by me and thereafterplaced in the right context to read how the scholars view the subject. Accordingto the scholars and the Swedish curriculum, the results showed that the Swedishscholars have a similar view on what they think is the meaning with RE. The fundamentalidea is that the education should be child-centered and evolve around pupilsknowledge, background and abilities to attain the purpose of the subject. Which willlead to an immersed knowledge, understanding, respect and tolerance for different religiouspositions. Both the British and the Swedish scholars agreed that the dominating secular and atheistpoint of view in the classrooms and in the society, constitutes challenges for theteachers to apply the different strategies to achieve the meaning of RE. The Swedishscholars opine that the RE needs to contribute to learning about and learning fromreligions through different perspectives that show religions from the inside perspectiveand the outside perspective.

Västerviks församling – en tjänsteproducent och kyrka online: En textanalys med religionssociologisk ram av församlingen i Västerviks Facebook-inlägg2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay was to study how the religious congregation in the Swedish town Västervik, as a part of the Swedish state church, was publishing posts on their Facebook. By using the method qualitative text analysis and sorting all published posts on Svenska kyrkan i Västerviks Facebook page in 2020 into categories, it became possible to get a general picture of the material. The goal was also to understand the material that was posted on their Facebook page through socio-religious theories that argues that the Swedish state church has become a resource and a producer of services in the Swedish society. The ambition was also to see if the material published on Facebook could connect to what earlier studies had identified about churches and organizations on social media, and to what rapports say about the reducing members and the relationship between the youth and the church. The study of the essay shows that the congregation in Västervik is publishing material which indicates that they, as a part of the Swedish state church, is a resource and a producer of services. Not least because they have a lot of posts with non-theological content. The study also shows that the congregation uses their Facebook to create dialogue with their followers and members, and that they especially have a lot of posts with videos of their worship service online. This makes them available to members, and they do not seem to make a separation between the physical church and the church online. Furthermore, the study does not show that the congregation tries to attract nor keep members, but some posts are directly reaching out to youths, also from channels outside Facebook. This makes it possible to think that they want to improve their relationship between the church and the youths. Something that in the long run could benefit the amount of members in the congregation.

Toleransbegreppets mångtydighet: En analys av läroplansbegreppet tolerans inom kontexten för ämnet religionskunskap2015Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This litterature study is an analysis of the concept of tolerance, as it is a central value in the

curriculum for the Swedish upper secondary school (Gy11) and therefore an important part of

interpreting the specific curriculum for religious studies. The scientific approach is drawn from

curriculum theory and the method of analysis is hermeneutic. Four different understandings of the

concept are presented from academic literary sources. To further problematize the understandings of

the concept, critique against a ”pedagogy of tolerance” as expressed by normcritical pedagogical

writers and scholars is presented and analyzed. Implications regarding didactical practice are

discussed in the light of previous analysis. Two main criteria for tolerance were found in all four

understandings. These criterias outline the necessary components of an act of tolerance. The critique

mainly focuses on said act, as it is an act of power and differentiation. This implies the didactical

importance of awareness regarding the complexity of an act of tolerance.

    Abstract [en]

This is a qualitative interview study aiming to examine the concept of tolerance as it is a core value in the curriculum for the Swedish upper secondary school and high school. The concept of tolerance is linked to the subject of religious studies. A total of six teachers were interviewed regarding their understanding and interpretation of the concept, as well as its place in their teaching. The method of analysis was hermeneutic and the statements made by the teachers were further analyzed in the light of normcritical pedagogy and didactical awareness. The results show a diversified understanding of the concept, manifested in a broad scale of attitudes to it, ranging from negative to positive, though all were based on a reflective approach. This affected the teachers' tendency to include, or focus on, the concept of tolerance in their teaching, varying from active inclusion to exclusion. The discussion focuses on the differences and difficulties associated with acts of tolerance versus attitudes of tolerance. The teachers define religious studies as a subject with heavy focus on interpersonal relations. Acts of tolerance are therefore problematic as they are also acts of power between individuals and groups. This shows the didactical importance of discussing the concept of tolerance, mainly in relation to attitudes and acts, between teachers as well as in the classroom.

Förmödrars makt: En diskurspsykologisk undersökning av häxan som arketyp ur ett feministiskt maktperspektiv2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to identify who the witch is today. The aim was also to investigate how women express their witch identity and how witchcraft is associated with feminism and power. The study aimed to shed light on positioning, identification, discourses and how society shapes the witch through recurring patterns and underlying notions. The study is qualitative with a discourse analytical approach. The study's methodological approach is based on Nigel Edley's discourse psychology where the focus is on language, power, meaning-making and interpretive repertoire. The analytical concepts used to drive the analysis are interpretive repertoires, ideological dilemmas, and subject positions. The analysis material consists of three podcasts, in each podcast there are two people who run the podcast. Since one podcast episode has one guest, seven participants will be in my analysis. The results shows that the witch is whoever she wants to be and can be anyone. Furthermore, the woman's identification as a witch can contribute to being able to feel free and to learn things about yourself and the world. The study also shows that taking back the witch as a concept and archetype means strengthening the woman's power, beyond the man's control. After completing the study, I see that the witch may very well be a tool for resisting oppression, dominance and norms that create a fixed human being. The witch is a way of dreaming, without being part of the patriarchal reality in which everyone is forced to live. Witchcraft can be seen as a loss but also a tribute to female divinity. The witch is ambiguous, cross-border and a rebel against the norms of society. The witch can help create a better society and a better world, where oppression and dominance of power is not a fact. The witch confronts the patriarchy and can, if everyone accepts the witch's independence, be the beginning of the fourth wave's feminism.

Special Education in Greece: Review2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Special education has been a major topic of discussion in all countries of the European Union. Initially, the lack of efforts to establish a system for the protection of the rights of people with disabilities in education received international attention already in the 1980s. The continuation of the efforts was made at the level of the European Union, helping to present the first signs of an institutional national foundation of the rights of the people with special needs. In Greece, society and the legislator proved to be unprepared. Social inclusion and school acceptance of pupils with disabilities was inadequate. In contrast, in the Scandinavian countries the phenomenon of solidarity and welfare is more pronounced. In conclusion, the signs of improving the Greek legislative framework, developing a major political conscience and social "de-stereotyping" are encouraging.

”Om religionerna inte släppt fram vetenskapen, hur hade samhället sett ut då?”: En kvalitativ intervjustudie om religionskunskapslärares tankar, åsikter och didaktiska ställningstaganden gällande religion och vetenskap2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Mänskliga rättigheter - bortom den globala samtidens spektrum2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 5 credits / 7,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Religious education (RE) is one of eight mandatory courses in upper secondary school in Sweden, due to the curriculum of GY11. It has a broad and extent content in comparison to its limited educational time, giving an indication that RE teachers need to make strategic didactical choices. This study focuses on lifting the RE teachers’ own voices by finding out situations where they describe a need of making didactical choices, what didactical choices they end up doing and what motivates those choices. Based on grounded theory, five qualitative interviews with RE teachers in upper secondary school has been interpreted and extracted as the empirical basis of the presented result. The results connect the situations of choices with the decision basis and didactic choices, where the final didactical choice can be understood from the two other factors. The result also leads on to three aspects of decision basis: the student, the teacher, and the organization of school. Thus, the result should be interacted with contemporary studies, as it only aims to be comprehended as one perspective, opening for and hopefully inspiring to further research.

Synen på religionsfrihet i konfessionella gymnasiefriskolor utifrån lärarperspektivet2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 5 credits / 7,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Satanism och identitet: En hermeneutisk analys av satanistiska texter2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 5 credits / 7,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Church of Satan och The Greater Church of Lucifer.

Bible (1969, 2005) samt Wisdom of Eosphoros (2015).

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine how two Muslim feminists perceive themselves to betreated by the Swedish majority society and within the secular feminist movement. Thesurvey was conducted using qualitative method with a total of two interviews. For the study'stheoretical perspectives, I have used postcolonialism and postcolonial feminism. The result ofthe survey and the analysis show that the informants say that they face an image of Muslimwomen as considered being under oppression. The informants believe that this stereotypicalimage has its origin from the colonial period. The question that is most important for themwithin feminism is to be treated as a feminist and as a Muslim without being questioned. Theyfeel like it's hard to identify with the Swedish secular feminism, but they also feel that thegroup of Swedish secular feminists have a difficulty identifying themselves with Muslimwomen too. Consider this, one of the informants does not feel welcome among Swedishsecular feminism while the other one never had an interest in becoming a member of itbecause she did not consider them to strive for the same goal as herself. The informantsclaims that there are opportunities for them to speak in the public debate, but as Muslimfeminists they are facing a bigger struggle.

”Välsigna mig Herre, ty jag har syndat”: En narrativ analys av skräckserien Midnight Mass, utifrånde religionsteoretiska etiska begreppen det goda livet och den goda människan2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Film is an important resource, especially for young people who not only allow themselves to be entertained but also reflect on themselves and their place in society and the world. The purpose of this essay is to investigate what the narration in the horror series Midnight Mass could offer to the teaching of ethics and morality in the high school religious studies subject, in relation to the subject-theoretical ethical concepts of the good life and the good person. The research material consists of the horror series Midnight Mass created by Mike Flanagan. The research method is a qualitative, narrative analysis. The results show that the narrative offers several different interpretations of the good, in relation to the good life and the good person. The narration shows that goodness comes neither from believing in a certain God, nor from belonging to a certain religion or way of life. Everyone has a personal responsibility to do good for a good purpose, with or without religion, to be counted as good. However, for the individual's practice of the good life and the good person to be counted as good, it must not restrict other people's rights and freedoms. The subject didactic reflection based on the result of the narration makes it possible to look at creating closeness, empathy and understanding for the ethical and moral perspective that is portrayed. The conclusion is that the series can be a suitable didactic starting point for the teaching of ethics and morality.

Vad blev av religionskunskapens syfte?: En intervjustudie om religionskunskapslärares ämnesförståelse i relation till undervisningstid2023Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay explores what happens to the Swedish ethics and religious education in upper secondary school correlated to the amount of scheduled classroom time at hand for teachers and students. To explore this field, five interviews were conducted with licensed teachers of ethics and religions, where they were able to share their own experience in organising their teaching. The result shows that all the teachers have to prioritize their time in such a way that not all parts of what they are supposed to teach according to the national curriculum was given due space within the given time frame. The hermeneutic analysis of the result tells us that the purpose taught in ethics and religious education for upper secondary school tends to be more oriented towards facts about religions contrary to an emphasis on understanding of religions and religiosity.

Bilden av kvinnor och män i ett läromedel för religionskunskap2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Världen & religionen efter 11 september 2001: En kvalitativ textanalys utifrån en marxistisk förståelsehorisont2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to examine how three contemporary and Marxist

oriented researchers try to explain the events in the USA in September 11, 2001

and the effect these events have had in relation to religion and religious

fundamentalism at large and for Islam specifically. The essay examines how these

ideas can be understood in relation to Marx’s ideas. The method consists of

qualitative text analysis and focuses on the ideas presented rather than who is

presenting the ideas. The hermeneutic approaches for analysing content and

argumentation has been used. The essay also has a comparative approach. In order

to understand the results in comparison to Marxist theory ideal types were created.

The result indicates that more long term as well as contemporary historical

processes are of importance in order to understand the attacks, that social and

economic inequality are significant and that religion in both these cases has a

subordinate position. The result rejects the idea of a “clash of civilisations” and

suggests instead a “clash within civilisations”. Religious fundamentalism is

understood as a part of modernity and Islamism as but one expression of Islam, a

    maximalist one.

Satans lakejer: En teoretisk positionering av det Satanistiska Samfundet2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to provide theoretical positioning for the Satanist Society (Det Satanistiska Samfundet), a religious community by Swedish law whose practice includes political Satanism. The study is also a comparative approach that compares the discourse of the Satanist Society with its American model The Satanic Temple. The essay also wants to try Henrik Bogdan's theory that Satanists and Satanism are seen as the “Other" and are accused of being the evil principle in the Christian worldview. The essay is preformed using a discourse analysis that targets on satanic discourses, political actions, and media/society’s view of the Satanist Society. The result of the study demonstrates that the Satanist Society and the Satanic Temple shares the same satanic discourses, rooted in romantic satanism, feministic satanism and modern satanism, as stipulated by Anton LaVey. Their political approach is what sets the two movements apart. The Satanic society´s political actions take place in social media platforms as Instagram and Facebook, while the Satanic Temple makes its political statements in provocative demonstrations and in the US court system by suing actions, they find violating the right to freedom of religion. The study also shows that media and society reproduce historical stereotypes of satanism sprung both from the Christian construction and the more recent pop culture, which put the Satanist and Satanism as the “Other”.

Sekulära normer i mångkulturens vagga: En kvalitativ studie i hur lärare uppfattar begreppen mångkultur och sekularitet2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Utsatt judisk identitet i Sverige?: En jämförande studie av medieskildringar i tryckt press och åtta judars egen uppfattning2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Can human rights prevail?: Analyzing contemporary ecofascism2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Climate change, as well as posited solutions, is arguably an increasing political problem and therefore relevant to study for the political scientist. Solutions may entail problems in themselves.Finnish ecologist Pentti Linkola has argued that humankinds’ only hope of survival is reducing the population greatly by large-scale, state-organized killings, and further dismantling of what has grown fundamental to many modern societies, such as democracy or private economic freedom. What happens to human rights if such a proposal is realized? In this thesis, Linkolas’ arguments are put against scholars believing that human rights are fundamental and inviolable parts of being human. The aim is to unveil the underlying ideas of Linkola, and analyze how his argumentation dismisses human rights. A broader aim is to see if these ideas can be connected to the ideology of ecofacism as it manifests today. This thesis answers two research questions:- In what way does Pentti Linkolas’ argumentation in Can life prevail? (2009) contradict an idea of human rights as given?- What may the underlying ideas behind this contradiction be?Results show that arguments of Linkola not only dismisses, but deem ideas of human rights dangerous for human survival.

Ett postsekulärt Sverige?2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The visibility of religion in a global world and demands for political influence are subject to debate and research. One of the fields of research is the revision of the theory of secularism which has opened to the de-privatization of religion in civil society, where it can constitute a counterforce against totalitarian movements, criticism of capitalism downsides to consumerism and an in-depth discussion of existential issues. In Sweden, Joel Halldorf - Liberal columnist, academic scientist and Christian - is an advocate of post-secularistic approach to religious diversification based on migration. The survey focuses on how Halldorf based on his different roles argue for religion increased influence in society. A basis for Halldorf's argumentation is a functional definition of religion that allows Halldorf to emphasize the ability of religions to fellowship and organization in associations. Halldorf's thoughts have met resistance from parts of the liberal press why this resistance will be correlated to Halldorf's different roles.

Corporal Punishment: A study about attitudes and opinions to corporal punishment and the connection to children’s rights in South Africa and Sweden2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 40 credits / 60 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Corporal punishment is a worldwide problem. The purpose withthis thesis is to promote a constructive discussion about the problem andconnect this to children’s rights. This gives the possibility to start adiscussion about suggestions and measures to reduce the problem. Thetheory is that corporal punishment is used as a disciplinary method tochange behavior. Children’s rights is regulated by conventions and nationallaws. The method is to conduct an analysis with interpretations andcommentaries of the research materials from South Africa and Sweden. The conclusion is that those who are positive to corporal punishment thinksit is an efficient working method, and it is about children’s safety. Thosewho are negative have experienced that alternative methods works. Asuggestion is to involve children in the work with children’s rights andeducate them in human and children’s rights with focus on obligations andresponsibility.

Meningsskiljaktigheter om upplysningen inom modern ateism: En kvalitativ komparativ analys av John Gray och Christopher Hitchens2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The Arab states of the middle east in the last four decades have experienced an upsurge in revenues mainly by help of their natural resources, and therefore increased their arms purchases. It is interesting to know how the human rights condition was during that period and if there are correlations between arms sales and level of human rights violations in these countries. With reviewing previous researches and by help of an analysis in this study, the data shows a connection between an increase of arms sales and human rights violation in 3 out of 5 cases in this research.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this critical discourse analysis study is to analyse Swedish and international legislation to determine if it is possible to restrict the use of religious symbols among extreme right movements. To contextualise the analysis material it is prudent to describe the rise and development of Nordic neo-paganism and its connections to extreme right movements. Since the runes in this study share some history with the swastika in Nazi Germany some context about the history of this symbol is also provided. I have divided the analysis into two sections: The first part evaluates legislation and includes the Swedish contitutional law (RF), the European convention on human rights (ECHR) as well as the Swedish discrimination law. The analysis also includes legislative information from the Swedish government agencies called the Chancellor of Justice and the Swedish Agency for Support to Faith Communities. The second part of the analysis focuses on two political extreme right parties called The Nordic resistance movement (NRM) and the Swedish party (SP) as well as their symbols, the tyr rune and the helmet of terror. The result of the analysis shows that it is not possible to limit the religious legislations’ inner core, which stipulates the rights of belief and freedom from it. It is however possible to make limitations in the legislations’ outer core which is mainly comprised of the freedom of speech dimension of the religious freedom.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this work was to see what thoughts, ideals, interpretations and feelings that students express when analyzing images from textbooks. I focused my work around four questions, what kind of pictures does the students encounter in their textbooks? Within what context are these images presented? How are the images interpreted by the students? And What positives and or negatives with the use of pictures in textbooks become apparent? To answer these questions, I needed pictures to work with, these were supplied by a teacher from a high school. The pictures were taken from a textbook that the teacher uses when teaching the students. This is because I wanted the students to analyze images that they encounter in their education and not “random images”. The students in question were all asked during a religious education class to complete a series of image analyses. The results of this was then presented and discussed with the use of literature about different problems with textbooks and the use of images. The results showed that the interpretation of images are both predictable and unpredictable in a way. The results show the use of strong common symbols is a way to convey information through images. But what was also apparent is that interpretation of images can be highly personal and is greatly influenced by the interpreters own opinions and prior knowledge. The literature suggests that images last longer in memory than text, which leaves me to believe that it is very important that the right images are chosen to represent the information that is being presented in textbooks. The positives with images is that they provide a relief in contrast to the text and also help to illustrate what the text is conveying. Problems that became apparent are that images can be interpreted in a lot of different ways and it is probably impossible to choose images that can not be interpreted in a negative way.

A shattered sacred story: the rise and fall of the Bride of Christ within the charismatic congregation Knutby Filadelfia, Sweden2017Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Knutby Filadelfia is a charismatic Christian congregation of approximately 90 members located in Sweden. The congregation is known particularly for what has been called “The Knutby Drama” taking place in January 2004 when a pastor persuaded a young female member to shoot two members of the congregation, one of whom died. The perpetrator of the crime was under the impression that she acted according to God’s will, expressed in text messages received on her mobile phone. The murdered member’s sister, Pastor Åsa M Waldau, was dubbed “the Bride of Christ” by the media after rumours stating that she has claimed to be the New Jerusalem, and married to Jesus, which later proved correct. Waldau has had a unique position as the group´s charismatic leader since the early 1990s. The mystique surrounding Waldau’s person and a theology based on her in the role as the Bride of Christ in a semi-erotic narrative including a wedding and prophesies in the form of love letters from Jesus (called Dojadid by Waldau) has been sternly denied by leaders and members of the congregation since 2004. However, rapid changes has taken place within the group. Waldau was unexpectedly banned from the congregation in November 2016, and along with her, the charismatic pop icon-like pastor Urban Fält was thrown out of the congregation. Following these drastic measurements, the congregation publicly denounced both leaders and the Christ of Bride-theology, stating publicly that they had been the victims of psychological abuse by manipulative charismatic leaders.

This paper presents the undercurrents in the sacred story of the Bride of Christ: how it was invented, post 2004 repressed but secretly sustained in practice, and finally by what means it was finally shattered and rejected by the congregation in 2016. It relates these developments to similar events in other new religions and discusses the possibilities of the congregation to survive and maintain its membership beyond the crisis.

Children Reared in Sectarian Groups2020In: The Encyclopedia of Child and Adolescent Development / [ed] Wiley Online Library, Wiley Online Library , 2020Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A broad definition of what constitutes a sectarian group is social and theological deviance and/or innovation, often paired with some level of critique of and isolation or withdrawal from society. It is impossible to say how many children (under the age of 18) worldwide grow up in so-called sectarian groups. There are primarily three reasons why such an estimation is problematic: the definitions of the terms new religions, cults, and sectarian groups vary according to time and location; the nature of sectarian groups tends to encompass withdrawal from society, which means that the beliefs of a group may not be known to wider society; and the groups are often wary about stating or have no knowledge of their own membership figures, sometimes due to unclear definitions of membership. This entry examines various impacts of the ways in which sectarian groups interact with socialization, education, health, and abuse, and the possible consequences for children reared in such groups.

Crying in the Flesh: Disciplining Children in Knutby Filadelfia2016Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Knutby Filadelfia is a small Christian charismatic congregation residing outside Uppsala, Sweden. The group became known worldwide in January 2004 when a pastor allegedly persuaded a young female member to shoot two other members, one of whom died. The perpetrator of the crime was under the impression that she acted according to God’s will. Right from the onset of the group’s entrance into the eye of the media, rumours of abusive child rearing and harsh discipline of children has surrounded the group, especially when recorded sermons from the group’s church service where pastors encouraging corporal punishment of children started circulating on the internet. To contextualize this specific case, democratic child-rearing norms in Sweden are briefly accounted for. Since corporal punishment is illegal in Sweden, the groups’ alleged practice of authoritative child rearing methods were soon publicly questioned, and voices were raised from the public and from representatives from the medical community for investigations. Ex-members testified to parental abuse dictated by the group’s charismatic leadership and some families came under investigation. This paper addresses the issue of parental disciplining within the group from the perspective of the leadership of the group, the media, and the perspective of the supposed victims: the children themselves. It also discusses methodological difficulties connected to researching children in new religious communes.

Exploring Alternative Childhoods: Studying Kids in Cults2014In: Sociology of Family, Social Life and Childhood, 2014Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The study of new religious movements (cults) has been a controversial topic since its inception in the early 1970s. Numerous volumes have been published on a variety of topics, e. g.: affiliation and defection, the impact of charismatic leadership, gender roles and sexuality, violence and mass suicides, and the relationship with the media. However, very little attention has been given to the children of these movements. The situation for the children growing up in the movements constitute, at best, a small part of the study of a movement, but they are rarely ever subjects of such a study in their own right. Most commonly, their situation is investigated in retrospect, as they tell their life stories to researchers once they have reached adulthood. Not surprisingly, these life stories tend to look quite different depending on whether a member has stayed in or left the group. Another problematic aspect regarding the studies done in retrospect, is that new religious movements are, by definition, prone to rapid change. This may result in vast differences concerning socialization between generations, even between siblings within a family. Therefore, factual and up to date information about socialization within new religious movements is highly important. This presentation takes a look at the current field of study and suggests how this”blind spot” in the study of childhood can be covered.

From Children of God to Children of Members: Changing Views on Children in TFI 1988-2013

The Family International is one of the most extensively studied new religious movements in the world. They are also one of few surviving new religious movements founded in the 1960’s. Due to the group’s continuous prophecy as well as society’s strong reactions to their radical theology and intense critique of mainstream society the movement has changed rapidly throughout its history. The movement’s comprehension of childhood and its attitude towards children have had specific consequences for the group in terms of intervention from social services and raids against Family communes. For some children particularly this has led to frequent relocating and homeschooling in order to limit contact with people outside the group and to avoid attracting attention from social services. The view of children within the group changed dramatically in 2010, when the organizational change “the Reboot” declared children no longer members but “children of members”.

This paper examines the changes in normative views on children’s roles and the idea of childhood within The Family International in the last 25 years with particular focus on the Swedish context. By analyzing the movement’s own publications, academic publications, and media coverage on the group as well as biographical texts, a picture of a rapidly changing movement emerges. How has children’s roles within the movement been understood during the last 25 years? The paper argues that the movement has had to reevaluate its understanding of children and childhood as a consequence of the increasing awareness in mainstream society of children’s welfare.

Kids of Knutby: Living in and Leaving the Swedish Filadelfia Congregation2023 (ed. 1)Book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This book tells the story of the children and youth of the charismatic new religious commune Knutby Filadelfia in Sweden. It recounts the history of the congregation, which started out as a part of the Swedish Pentecostalmovement in 1921. In the 1990s, it developed into a new religion, when the congregations female pastor embraced the role of the Bride of Christ. The congregation became widely known in 2004 when one of its members was murdered by another member, the latter claiming to have been acting on orders from God. In 2018, the congregation dissolved after a few years of internal crisis. Sanja Nilsson provides rich empirical analysis of archival material and interviews with the congregations children and youth. The young informants personal perspectives on their own childhoods encompass narratives from their time inside the congregation, when they identified as members of a stigmatizedminority religion, aswell as from the time after the dissolution of the group, when they identified asdefectors from what they came to view as a sectarian milieu. This work offers a comprehensive insight into the Knutby Filadelfia congregation, a group, that although notoriously charted by the media, has been hitherto unexplored by academics. It adds to the growing field of studies concerned with childhoods within new religions and expounds the dynamics of the defection process from the rarely applied perspective of children and youth themselves.
