    Abstract [en]

    The present book is an attempt to provide a comprehensive description of conditional constructions in old Italian. The study is divided into four parts. In the first one corresponding to Chapter 1 – I discuss the theoretical and methodological principles underpinning my research. The focus is on the following aspects: i) the logical form of the expression if p, q; ii) the interaction between condi- tionality, hypothesis, time, tenses and mood; iii) the role played by the linguistic and pragmatic context. In the second part (Chapter 2), I illustrate the changes affecting conditionals in the transition from Latin to Italian, and I compare vulgarizations with original Latin texts. The third part (Chapters 3-8) is the core of the whole book. In Chapter 3, I propose a classification of Old Italian conditionals according to the following types: predictives, gnomics, counterfactuals, inferentials, conversationals, interrogatives, imperatives, anankastics, optatives. I also describe if sentences expressing meanings other than the condition- al one (e.g. factuality, temporality, concessivity, correlation, etc.), and discuss the semantic and syntactic features of the so-called “hypothetical comparative sentences”, introduced by the complex connective come se (‘as if’). In Chapter 4, I present an in-depth description of the several combinations of times, tenses and moods concerning conditional constructions. In Chapter 5 I dwell on aspects such as i) the syntactic placement of the protasis and apodosis in the textual chain; ii) the occurrence of the quantifier solo (‘only’); iii) the occurrence of epistemic markers (e.g. forse ‘maybe’, certamente ‘certainly’, etc.). In Chapter 6 I outline the functions of correlatives such as e ‘and’, sì ‘thus’, allora ‘then’, dunque ‘therefore’, which give conditionals their internal cohe- sion. Chapter 7 is an overview of the various connectives which can express a conditional meaning in Old Italian, such as qualora ‘whenever’, quando ‘when’, dove ‘where’, eccetto che ‘except if” (negative conditional). In Chapter 8, I extend the analysis to those syntactic structures which express a conditional relation even though they don’t have the form of a prototypical conditional construction if p, q. In the fourth part of the book (Chapter 9), I consider the use of conditionals in different text types (i.e. narrations, chronicles, scientific treatises, arguments, legal documents) to identify their communicative functions. In the conclusive remarks, I focus on the diachrony of Italian conditionals, stressing both continuity and discontinuity issues. The book ends with a small appendix containing data on starting if sentences (incipit) in Old Italian Poetry.

    Abstract [it]

    In the recent years, in Italy there has been a quite important — and in some cases considerable — success of the so–called “migrant writers” who have chosen Italian as mean to represent their “other” identity or, more simply, to express their literary creativity. The result of this choice gives rise to the phenomenon of “linguistic hybridization” that is to say the creation of a multi–level language that is influenced by the mother tongue and culture of the author. On the basis of the models offered by Critical Discourse Stylistics, I try to define the textual factors and the stylistic features of the migration and postcolonial literature, and I dwell in particular on the ways in which the voices and points of view of the narrator and characters are expressed and represented in the text. Given the heterogeneity of the corpus of my investigation, I take into consideration the cultural differences of the authors, since in a critical perspective it is necessary to distinguish between writers from former Italian colonies (mothertongue and/or bilingual speakers) and migrant writers tout court, who have assimilated the Italian language and culture after having moved to Italy.

    Abstract [en]

    This contribution deals with the various verbal morphology in the Italian counterfactual conditionals (the so-called periodo ipotetico dell'irrealtà). Starting from the inventory of all the possible combinations with the imperfetto indicativo that appear in these constructions, it will be shown that the variability of the mood and tense forms is not merely a matter of norm, but that there are clear-cut mechanisms which regulate such variability. Specifically, some peculiar combinations often marked as familiar or, simply, non-standard, are not always possible, but are depending on the actionality of the verbs (telic or atelic) being present in the protasis and/or the apodosis.

    Ce volume rassemble les communications de la section « Pragmatique historique et syntaxe » qui ont été tenues dans le cadre du XXXIe Romanistentag allemand à l'Université de Bonn. L'objectif principal portait sur l'analyse de textes romans anciens dans une perspective pragmatique/de pragmatique du discours. Celle-ci se consacre à la reconstruction des procédés au moyen desquels les scripteurs ou locuteurs (fictifs) « manipulate the resources of their language to accomplish particular communicative objectives » (Fleischman/Waugh). La grande variété des contributions présentées ici offre un aperçu des différentes approches théoriques de ce domaine de recherche actuel. Ce livre contient des contributions en français, en italien, en espagnol et en anglais.Dieser Band vereinigt die Vorträge der Sektion «Historische Pragmatik und Syntax», die im Rahmen des XXXI. Deutschen Romanistentags im September 2009 an der Universität Bonn gehalten wurden. Im Mittelpunkt stand dabei die Analyse älterer romanischer Texte in pragmatischer/diskurs-pragmatischer Perspektive. Diese interessiert sich für die Rekonstruktion von Verfahren, durch die die Schreibenden oder (fiktiven) Sprecher «manipulate the resources of their language to accomplish particular communicative objectives» (Fleischman/Waugh). Das weite Spektrum der Beiträge erlaubt einen Einblick in unterschiedliche theoretische Ansätze dieses aktuellen Forschungsgebiets.     In questo lavoro si intende analizzare l’utilizzo del genere noir storico da parte dello scrittore contemporaneo Carlo Lucarelli con particolare attenzione ai suoi cinque romanzi sul commissario De Luca, ovvero Carta bianca (Lucarelli 1990), L’estate torbida (Lucarelli 1991), Via delle Oche (Lucarelli 1996), Intrigo italiano (Lucarelli 2017), Peccato mortale (2018).1 Lungi dall’essere esaustiva, l’analisi si propone di approfondire due aspetti principali e quindi di riflettere su due domande di fondo, con maggior enfasi sulla seconda:- Esiste un motivo per cui Carlo Lucarelli sceglie il noir storico come veste letteraria di molti dei suoi romanzi?- Com’è utilizzata e ricostruita la dimensione storico-sociale e qual è il messaggio di cui essa si fa veicolo nei romanzi sul commissario De Luca?Per meglio contestualizzare la figura di Lucarelli all’interno dell’attuale produzione italiana di letteratura gialla si è dedicato un primo capitolo a un veloce inquadramento del genere noir. Nel primo paragrafo del secondo capitolo si trova una breve biografia dell’autore con accenni alla sua produzione artistica, mentre nel secondo paragrafo dello stesso capitolo si cerca di riflettere sulle motivazioni della scelta del sottogenere letterario “noir storico” da parte dell’autore, nel tentativo di dare una risposta alla prima delle due domande di fondo. Il terzo capitolo si concentra sull’analisi specifica dei cinque romanzi sul commissario De Luca, per indagare sulle modalità di ricostruzione del contesto storico sociale che fa da cornice alle indagini del commissario e sulla funzione che la storia ha all’interno della narrazione. Si noti che lo spazio riservato all’ultimo dei cinque romanzi, Peccato mortale, è estremamente ridotto rispetto a quello per gli altri quattro libri, poiché il romanzo è stato pubblicato un paio di mesi fa quando questo lavoro era in via di conclusione e non si è avuto il tempo sufficiente, oltre al leggerlo, per approfondire adeguatamente la sua analisi.Una delle difficoltà principali nell’affrontare un lavoro di questo tipo è il dover districarsi tra la mole di informazioni disponibili in Rete e a stampa. Carlo Lucarelli, infatti, è prolifico su vari fronti: è scrittore di romanzi, conduttore e ideatore di programmi televisivi, ma è anche estremamente attivo sui cosiddetti social, ad esempio Facebook, partecipa a molte conferenze, rilascia frequentemente interviste e molto altro ancora. Specialmente in Rete si può trovare davvero molto materiale che lo riguarda. Questo fa sì che chi ha intenzione di analizzare le sue opere e il suo pensiero debba passare al vaglio una quantità elevata di informazioni di vario tipo, prima di selezionarle e poi studiarle in modo critico. Non è facile, c’è il rischio di perdersi, ma anche di tralasciare elementi importanti.1 Qui sono riportati gli anni della pubblicazione dei cinque romanzi, tuttavia in questo lavoro si farà riferimento, per i primi tre romanzi, a edizioni successive: Carta bianca (Lucarelli 2014), L’estate torbida (Lucarelli 2017), Via delle Oche (Lucarelli 2008). Inoltre si è scelto di usare nelle note a piè di pagina e nell’analisi dei romanzi gli acronimi CB per Carta Bianca, ET per L’estate torbida, VO per Via delle Oche, II per Intrigo italiano e PM per Peccato mortale.2Il metodo seguito per la stesura del presente elaborato è stato appunto quello di leggere i romanzi e poi di visionare quanto più materiale critico possibile per farne una selezione mirata atta a rispondere o quantomeno a fornire spunti di riflessione attorno alle due domande principali del presente elaborato.

    Abstract [es]

    En el siguiente estudio se analiza la novela La vida simplemente del escritor chileno Oscar Castro publicada póstumamente en 1951. El fin de nuestra investigación es estudiar la existencia de estereotipos de género en la obra y cómo estos se reproducen o bien son desafiados en la novela.

    La interpretación hecha se basa principalmente en la teoría de las dicotomías (Hirdman, 2001), la cual pone énfasis en las cualidades que, históricamente, se le han atribuido a los respectivos géneros. Aplicamos un análisis crítico de texto para identificar cómo el lenguaje usado por el escritor contribuye a reproducirlos o los desafía. Para limitar nuestro trabajo hemos decidido concentrarnos en tres personajes de la obra: Berta, Roberto y la madre de Roberto. El resultado muestra que la obra de Castro tiende a contribuir a la reproducción y el mantenimiento de los estereotipos de género típicos de las dicotomías de las cuales problematiza Hirdman a excepción del personaje femenino representado por la madre de Roberto que los desafía en cierta forma.

    Early Communicative Gestures and Vocabulary Knowledge2015Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

    This poster presents work on the relationships between early communicative gestures and vocabulary knowledge in Swedish children aged 12 to 18 months. The role of gestures in early communicative development was studied using vocabulary measurements collected with the Swedish versions of the MacArthur-Bates CDI infant and toddler forms. In a larger study, correlations were calculated among communicative skills over 6-month intervals from child age 1;0 to 2;6 in a sample with varying numbers of children at different ages. The poster presents results from the first pairwise comparison using cross-sectional and cross-lagged correlations. Variables included gestures, receptive and productive vocabulary at 1;0, and productive vocabulary and the syntactic/grammatical measure M3L at 1;6 (n = 321). Gestures at 1;0 were more strongly correlated with receptive than productive vocabulary at the same age, and weakly correlated with productive vocabulary at 1;6. Additional analysis divided the gesture scale into “empty-hand” gestures and “object actions”, following Sansavini et al. (2010). Empty-hand gestures were found to be more related to productive vocabulary, while object-actions were more related to reception. Despite differences in methodology, results of the present study confirm some findings by Sansavini et al. Further analysis of the Swedish data showed that empty-hand gestures were significantly, but weakly, correlated with the percentage of nouns in children’s vocabularies at 1;6, whereas children’s use of object-actions were similarly correlated with the percentage of verbs. Results of this analysis may indicate that empty-hand gestures, which most often are deictic gestures, help infants enhance their knowledge of objects and their names, while activities with objects help them understand the concepts related to actions, particularly verbs. Such knowledge has implications for both parents and other caregivers who are invested in stimulating the language development of young children.

    Kunskap om ord och deras betydelser är inte bara en förutsättning för en god läsutveckling utan också för hur barn ska klara sig i livet. Studier har visat att olikheter i den tidiga språkutvecklingsmiljön kan leda till slående skillnader i barns ordförråd redan i förskoleåldern. Dessa olikheter bereder stora utmaningar för dagens lärare och andra som arbetar med barn. Kännedom om hur ordinlärning stimuleras i hemmet och i förskolan kan bidra till att utjämna dessa skillnader.

    Early Communicative Development in Swedish Children aged 12 to 30 months2016Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

    Research on child language acquisition confirms the importance of early language development for later language and literacy skills (Dickinson, Golinkoff & Hirsh-Pasek, 2010; Lee, 2011), and documents great individual variability in children’s acquisition rates (Fenson et al., 1994). Recent research has also widened the focus to include the impact of early gestures (e.g. Rowe & Goldin-Meadow, 2009). This study aims to investigate early communicative development in a sample of Swedish children based on parental report, using Swedish versions of the MacArthur-Bates CDI (Berglund & Eriksson, 2000; Eriksson & Berglund, 1999). In particular, variables such as early communicative gestures, receptive and productive vocabulary, and the syntactic/grammatical measure M3L (the Mean Length of Utterance score of the three longest utterances parents have heard their child say) are explored. The specific target group here is a subsample (from a total sample of 348) consisting of 128 children with complete records collected at six-month intervals (12, 18, 24 and 30 months of age). In the analysis, gender and children’s ability to use the pointing gesture at 12 months are used as grouping variables.

    The analysis entails first looking at general trends in the data, and thereafter examining individual trajectories, especially extreme ones. Growth curve modelling is employed to describe trajectories of productive vocabulary development, first with gender as the grouping variable, and secondly, with the pointing gesture at 12 months of age. Since preliminary results show different variation in the response between boys and girls, different covariance structures are used for modelling. Moreover, banded covariance structure is utilized to take into account strong correlations between neighboring time points (12-18, 18-24, and 24-30 months). Testing fixed effects reveals highly significantly different slopes for girls and boys. The banded covariance structure is also used in the analysis of productive vocabulary with pointing as the grouping variable. Taking into account heterogeneity in the two groups, results also indicate highly significant differences in vocabulary growth for pointers vs. non-pointers. However, separate analysis of the two groups is needed before further conclusions can be made. It must also be stressed that the data comes from parental report, and observational knowledge of both parental and child gestures is lacking. However, the results of this study definitely contribute to the international body of knowledge with data from the Swedish context. Furthermore, results regarding early communication are of interest for parents, child- and healthcare personnel, as well as educational practitioners.

    This paper describes a study of pronunciation learning using loaned MP3-players set in a college of business and tourism in Hanoi. Material was developed to help raise student awareness of a number of pronunciation features in English that are generally problematic for speakers of Vietnamese, such as vowel length and quality, and final consonants. This material was delivered to one group of 50 students as 9 pre-recorded audio lessons on the MP3-players. Another group of 61 students were given 8 traditional classroom lessons. Both groups were recorded before and after the study to establish whether their pronunciation improved on the particular features being taught.

    This paper reports the intelligibility difficulties experienced by students of English for academic purposes at a university in Sweden while taking part in synchronous net-based seminars. Connectivity limitations, microphone and headphone problems, background noise and other factors in combination with limited skill in the perception of English speech make it difficult for these students to process speech directed to them. In addition, the speech the students are trying to process may be produced by nonnative speakers of English, either fellow students or teachers. A comparison of simultaneous communication in several of the modes available in the virtual seminar environment showed that students make use of a number of strategies to partly compensate for their failure to optimally perceive and produce speech.

    Abstract [es]

    En la presente tesina se buscará abordar una interpretación de lo abyecto en El Coronel no tiene quien le escriba de Gabriel García Márquez. Para ello, será necesario partir del concepto de lo abyecto. Se entiende a este como el espacio lingüístico en el que tiene lugar aquello sobre lo que no se puede tener conocimiento (la muerte), y que evoca la posibilidad de dejar de existir, que resalta la degradación mental y corporal (los excrementos, la locura, las parafilias y las patologías) y que reprime todo lo que socialmente se considera "malo" o "dañino". Lo abyecto se configura a partir de límites sobre los que se da sentido al ser, al lenguaje y, con ello, a la vida misma (Kristeva, 1989: 12). Se buscará entender cómo funciona este concepto en la novela a partir del juego de dos hechos narrativos: la muerte y el silencio. El que silencio y muerte sean el sustento narrativo de una obra literaria permite pensar que estos dos límites no son tanto la imposibilidad sino la razón misma de la palabra. Así, se podrá ver que lo propuesto dentro de esta novela de García Márquez permite ver desde una nueva perspectiva qué es lo abyecto.

    Ce mémoire traite des méthodologies générales et systématisées de la didactique des langues étrangères développées à différentes périodes, ainsi que des méthodes d’enseignement (techniques, outils, matériels, exercices, activités et tâches etc.) et des théories autour de celles-ci. En utilisant une enquête, remplie par des professeurs travaillant dans certaines écoles suédoises, cette étude lie les méthodologies, les méthodes d’enseignement et les théories avec les pratiques de classe. L’étude montre quelles méthodes d’enseignement sont utilisées et la fréquence de leur utilisation, ainsi que les liens avec les méthodologies. Elle montre aussi que l’enseignement des professeurs de l’étude est principalement représentatif d’une seule méthodologie (la méthodologie cognitiviste – l’approche communicative).
