    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this work was to see what thoughts, ideals, interpretations and feelings that students express when analyzing images from textbooks. I focused my work around four questions, what kind of pictures does the students encounter in their textbooks? Within what context are these images presented? How are the images interpreted by the students? And What positives and or negatives with the use of pictures in textbooks become apparent? To answer these questions, I needed pictures to work with, these were supplied by a teacher from a high school. The pictures were taken from a textbook that the teacher uses when teaching the students. This is because I wanted the students to analyze images that they encounter in their education and not “random images”. The students in question were all asked during a religious education class to complete a series of image analyses. The results of this was then presented and discussed with the use of literature about different problems with textbooks and the use of images. The results showed that the interpretation of images are both predictable and unpredictable in a way. The results show the use of strong common symbols is a way to convey information through images. But what was also apparent is that interpretation of images can be highly personal and is greatly influenced by the interpreters own opinions and prior knowledge. The literature suggests that images last longer in memory than text, which leaves me to believe that it is very important that the right images are chosen to represent the information that is being presented in textbooks. The positives with images is that they provide a relief in contrast to the text and also help to illustrate what the text is conveying. Problems that became apparent are that images can be interpreted in a lot of different ways and it is probably impossible to choose images that can not be interpreted in a negative way.

A shattered sacred story: the rise and fall of the Bride of Christ within the charismatic congregation Knutby Filadelfia, Sweden2017Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Knutby Filadelfia is a charismatic Christian congregation of approximately 90 members located in Sweden. The congregation is known particularly for what has been called “The Knutby Drama” taking place in January 2004 when a pastor persuaded a young female member to shoot two members of the congregation, one of whom died. The perpetrator of the crime was under the impression that she acted according to God’s will, expressed in text messages received on her mobile phone. The murdered member’s sister, Pastor Åsa M Waldau, was dubbed “the Bride of Christ” by the media after rumours stating that she has claimed to be the New Jerusalem, and married to Jesus, which later proved correct. Waldau has had a unique position as the group´s charismatic leader since the early 1990s. The mystique surrounding Waldau’s person and a theology based on her in the role as the Bride of Christ in a semi-erotic narrative including a wedding and prophesies in the form of love letters from Jesus (called Dojadid by Waldau) has been sternly denied by leaders and members of the congregation since 2004. However, rapid changes has taken place within the group. Waldau was unexpectedly banned from the congregation in November 2016, and along with her, the charismatic pop icon-like pastor Urban Fält was thrown out of the congregation. Following these drastic measurements, the congregation publicly denounced both leaders and the Christ of Bride-theology, stating publicly that they had been the victims of psychological abuse by manipulative charismatic leaders.

This paper presents the undercurrents in the sacred story of the Bride of Christ: how it was invented, post 2004 repressed but secretly sustained in practice, and finally by what means it was finally shattered and rejected by the congregation in 2016. It relates these developments to similar events in other new religions and discusses the possibilities of the congregation to survive and maintain its membership beyond the crisis.

Barn i Krishna-rörelsen i Sverige: Bör vi oroa oss?2010In: Aura. Tidskrift för akademiska studier av nyreligiositet, ISSN 2000-4419, Vol. 2, no 1, p. 1-21Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

Crying in the Flesh: Disciplining Children in Knutby Filadelfia2016Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Knutby Filadelfia is a small Christian charismatic congregation residing outside Uppsala, Sweden. The group became known worldwide in January 2004 when a pastor allegedly persuaded a young female member to shoot two other members, one of whom died. The perpetrator of the crime was under the impression that she acted according to God’s will. Right from the onset of the group’s entrance into the eye of the media, rumours of abusive child rearing and harsh discipline of children has surrounded the group, especially when recorded sermons from the group’s church service where pastors encouraging corporal punishment of children started circulating on the internet. To contextualize this specific case, democratic child-rearing norms in Sweden are briefly accounted for. Since corporal punishment is illegal in Sweden, the groups’ alleged practice of authoritative child rearing methods were soon publicly questioned, and voices were raised from the public and from representatives from the medical community for investigations. Ex-members testified to parental abuse dictated by the group’s charismatic leadership and some families came under investigation. This paper addresses the issue of parental disciplining within the group from the perspective of the leadership of the group, the media, and the perspective of the supposed victims: the children themselves. It also discusses methodological difficulties connected to researching children in new religious communes.

Exploring Alternative Childhoods: Studying Kids in Cults2014In: Sociology of Family, Social Life and Childhood, 2014Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The study of new religious movements (cults) has been a controversial topic since its inception in the early 1970s. Numerous volumes have been published on a variety of topics, e. g.: affiliation and defection, the impact of charismatic leadership, gender roles and sexuality, violence and mass suicides, and the relationship with the media. However, very little attention has been given to the children of these movements. The situation for the children growing up in the movements constitute, at best, a small part of the study of a movement, but they are rarely ever subjects of such a study in their own right. Most commonly, their situation is investigated in retrospect, as they tell their life stories to researchers once they have reached adulthood. Not surprisingly, these life stories tend to look quite different depending on whether a member has stayed in or left the group. Another problematic aspect regarding the studies done in retrospect, is that new religious movements are, by definition, prone to rapid change. This may result in vast differences concerning socialization between generations, even between siblings within a family. Therefore, factual and up to date information about socialization within new religious movements is highly important. This presentation takes a look at the current field of study and suggests how this”blind spot” in the study of childhood can be covered.

From Children of God to Children of Members: Changing Views on Children in TFI 1988-20132013Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

From Children of God to Children of Members: Changing Views on Children in TFI 1988-2013

The Family International is one of the most extensively studied new religious movements in the world. They are also one of few surviving new religious movements founded in the 1960’s. Due to the group’s continuous prophecy as well as society’s strong reactions to their radical theology and intense critique of mainstream society the movement has changed rapidly throughout its history. The movement’s comprehension of childhood and its attitude towards children have had specific consequences for the group in terms of intervention from social services and raids against Family communes. For some children particularly this has led to frequent relocating and homeschooling in order to limit contact with people outside the group and to avoid attracting attention from social services. The view of children within the group changed dramatically in 2010, when the organizational change “the Reboot” declared children no longer members but “children of members”.

This paper examines the changes in normative views on children’s roles and the idea of childhood within The Family International in the last 25 years with particular focus on the Swedish context. By analyzing the movement’s own publications, academic publications, and media coverage on the group as well as biographical texts, a picture of a rapidly changing movement emerges. How has children’s roles within the movement been understood during the last 25 years? The paper argues that the movement has had to reevaluate its understanding of children and childhood as a consequence of the increasing awareness in mainstream society of children’s welfare.

Performing Perfectly: Presentations of Childhood in Knutby Filadelfia Before and After the Dissolution of the Congregation2019Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The Knutby Filadelfia Congregation, founded in 1921, started out as a Pentecostal congregation. It has, however, been considered a deviant and semi-isolated new religious movement ever since it became known to the public after a murder took place within its community in 2004. The massive media attention it received revealed the presence of a charismatic leader within the group, and the development of a new theology in which the charismatic leader was considered to be the Bride of Christ. After 2004, the congregation reinforced its boundaries with society, and then suddenly began to dissolve in 2016. This study discusses the development of totalistic features within the congregation from the perspective of sociologist Erving Goffman; it highlights the simultaneous presence of in-group as well as out-group social stigma; and it explores the conflicting presentations of childhood in the congregation in performances from before and after the dissolution of the congregation.

The results are based on empirical material from 25 semi-structured interviews with children and youth aged 7–25, 2 focus group interviews with youths, and 24 days of participant observations. Goffman’s theoretical framework, including the key concepts total institutions, stigma, and presentations, is used together with an interpretative phenomenological analysis approach in order to explore the experiences of childhoods as presented by children and youth within the congregation.

The findings suggest that their individual understandings of and responses to the presence of a charismatic authority, as well as the consequences of such authorities on parent–child relations, are individual. The Pre-Narratives focus on stigmatisation from society, while the Post-Narratives include stigma within the congregation in the form of social exclusion. The study further indicates that the presentations of childhoods given prior to and after the dissolution of the congregation, the so-called Pre- and Post-Narratives, differ due to changing dramaturgical loyalties, although they should both be considered front-stage activity in Goffman’s terms.

Rebooting The Family: Organizational Change within The Family International2011In: International Journal for the Study of New Religions, ISSN 2041-952X, Vol. 2, no 2, p. 157-178Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The Family International (TFI) is a religious movement that emerged in the late 1960s. It was founded by David Berg (1919-1994), who later came to be perceived by adherents as the End-Time Prophet. The movement is based on Christian theology but has never had more than 10,000 followers. It has, however, made itself internationally famous through a radical interpretation of the Bible and critique of mainstream society. The Family has received media attention partly due to its liberal views on sexuality.1 The group is well-known within the research field of sociology of religion and new religious movements, and has been extensively studied as a “high-tension” group" that has limited and regulated contact with mainstream society. Although there are some excellent in-depth case studies on the Family,3 the group is constantly changing due to its theology being based on continuous prophecy. This means that the group’s doctrines and praxis have changed considerably over the course of its 40-year history. This article examines the latest change in The Family International, called the Reboot, which was implemented in September 2010, in order to get a clearer picture of what constitutes this shift. This article also aims to show how changes in social boundaries due to the implementation of the Reboot are perceived by some members of The Family International.

Schooling Krishna's Swedish Grandchildren: A History of the Swedish Gurukula: Past, Present and Future2014In: INFORM Anniversary Conference: 'Minority Religions: Contemplating the Past and Anticipating the Future, 2014Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The first ISKCON gurukula was opened at the temple Korsnäs gård in 1979 in Sweden. It was subsequently moved to the farm project at Almviks gård, and operated in different forms until the closing down in 2003. In 2010 the inhabitants at Almviks gård again applied for permission to run a school for children, but the application was denied. This article aims to detail the history of the Swedish gurukula in relation to the international development of ISKCON-headed gurukulas and discuss the following questions; why was it instigated and why did it close? How has the applications for a new school been received by the authorities? Is it likely that a new gurukula could open up in Sweden and how would it be organized? What is done to educate the children in religious theory and practice at this point?

Sektpolitik: En analys av aktörerna bakom politiska motioner rörande sekter i Sverige2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

As the use of different digital social platforms grows there has been a question raised by scholars if religious belief and peoples view on religion will change or adapt due to new ways of interaction. The purpose of this essay was to investigate how religion is manifested in a new media such as TikTok and how users choose to aesthetically make the posts. The questions at issue was which religions are represented in user-generated content on TikTok? What is said about each religion on TikTok among the users? What religious areas are affected in TikTok posts and how are TikTok posts related to the way religion is presented? The study consists of a result based on qualitative analysis by using hashtag #religion on TikTok. The analytical approach was done by audiovisual approach together with a hermeneutic method to interpret the findings. The findings were then categorized by religious traditions, then subdivided down to different areas of religious aspects to get a clear view of what was said in every represented religion. The result showed that all traditional religions is represented to a great extent and the findings also revealed that a general structure emerged from the viewpoints that there is no religious dissonance on TikTok despite the notion that modern religiosity is characterized by individualization and subjectivation. Rather it emerged that what is said about respective religions is often linked to the traditional discourse of each religion. It also emerged that language was central to the presentation and the preferred way of communicating in TikTok posts marked with #religion.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Today we live in a world that can be called a global society since people more than ever before move across nations. The Swedish curriculum for secondary school emphasizes this change and places a higher demand on the education to learn the ability to live within cultural diversity. Several scholars emphasize that Swedish RE commonly starts from a secular position which makes religiosity as something that others do and places this group outside of society. Lived religiosity is a term that is supposed to close the gap between religion and the society that focuses on the insider’s perspective. This study therefore aims to look at how teachers in religious education express that religion is represented in their teaching. With the questions how the teachers describe the purpose of teaching about world religions, and how they talk about different methods of teaching? To examine this, four qualitative interviews with RE teachers have been made and then analyzed with a discursive method. The result showed that most of the teachers was placed under an individual discourse that emphasizes on religious individuals to describe what motivates their religiosity. This is applicable to a lived religion which can open up for different opinions and include religious students. The result also showed a social discourse among some of the teachers which can be interpreted from a more secular point of view, which can then relate to create the opposite effect. Most of the teachers were liked to a representative discourse when it comes to talk about methods of teaching. These methods originate from meeting an inside perspective and includes for example, working with written stories or bringing religious practitioners in to the classroom.

Wicca: En analys av en initiationsritual2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim with this study is to analyse the first of the three initiatory rites in the Gardnerian and Alexandrian Wicca traditions through the theory of Arnold van Gennep and Victor Turners development of his theory. My method is a hermeneutical one where I interpret my emic material through a theoretical lens. In this way I am hoping to achieve a greater knowledge regarding the ritual process, its connection to the idea of transformation and also acquire a glimpse of the Wiccan world view. My higher aim is to contribute, albeit in a small scale, to the growing body of literature concerning modern forms of western eso-tericism. This form of religion has for far too long been a subject to academic neglect. By ap-plying religious theories and concepts to Wicca I am hoping to show that it is possible, and worthwhile, to study this form of religious expression through a historical perspective.

Hur beskrivs begreppet nya religiösa rörelser utifrån olika forskares perspektiv?: En begreppshistorisk studie – Vad är egentligen nya religiösa rörelser?2019Student paper other, 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

"Den stora stygga vargen?": En argumentationsanalys om vargens moraliska värde i vargdebatten2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to see which ethical content arguments have in the debate about wolfhunting, particularly with regard to the Svensk Jakt respective Tidningen Djurens Rätt's arguments. The method used in this paper is the analysis of arguments in which I investigate the pro and contra arguments of the four authors of the articles that I have chosen to study. I will avail myself of theories from Carruthers and Franklin. Analysis shows that the authors of the Swedish hunting above all have a ecocentric view of the wolf where it is an instrumental value for the ecosystem, and the authors of Djurens Rätt's has especially a biocentric view of the wolf where it may be an absolute value, but they can also extend to the that the wolf has instrumental value in the ecocentric perspective. The discussion has shown that Djurens Rätt's and Svensk Jakt has a common position that is an ecocentric perspective where the wolf has instrumental value, even though they believe that different actions are different law to protect the species and the ecosystem.

Djuretiska positioneringar inom gymnasiala hästkurser: En kvalitativ diskursanalys kopplad till skolans värdegrund2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 5 credits / 7,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The world of the Sumerian mother goddess: an interpretation of her myths2014Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The present study is an interpretation of the two myths copied in the Old Babylonian period in which the Sumerian mother goddess is one of the main actors. The first myth is commonly called “Enki and Ninḫursaĝa”, and the second “Enki and Ninmaḫ”. The theoretical point of departure is that myths have society as their referents, i.e. they are “talking about” society, and that this is done in an ideological way. This study aims at investigating on the one hand which contexts in the Mesopotamian society each section of the myths refers to, and on the other hand which ideological aspects that the myths express in terms of power relations.

The myths are contextualized in relation to their historical and social setting. If the myth for example deals with working men, male work in the area during the relevant period is discussed. The same method of contextualization is used regarding marriage, geographical points of reference and so on. Also constellations of mythical ideas are contextualized, through comparison with similar constellations in other Mesopotamian myths. Besides the method of contextualization, the power relations in the myths are investigated. According to this latter method, the categories at issue, their ranking, as well as their changed ranking, are noted.

The topics of the myths are issues important for the kingship and the country, such as irrigation, trade, health and healing, birth, collective work, artisanry and rivalry. All these aspects are used in order to express what the power relations between the goddess Ninḫursaĝa/Ninmaḫ and the god Enki look like. The relations are negotiated and recalibrated, which leads to the goddess getting a lowered status. Part of the negotiations and recalibrations is gender behavior, which is related to historical developments in society. The present work points to the function of these myths as tools of recalibrating not only deities, but also men and women in society.

Shejk eller terrorist, annat finns inte att välja på: En litteraturstudie om muslimsk identitet på vita duken2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to examine the field of research regarding Hollywood feature films, the construction of stereotypes of Muslims and Arabs and what impact the negative stereotypes might have on Muslims’ concept of the self. The purpose is also to discuss what consequences this can have for the multi-cultural classroom. In order to fulfill the purpose, three questions where created. The first one was to examine research regarding the Hollywood feature films portrayal of Muslim stereotypes. The second question was to examine research regarding the feature movies impact on the conception of the self. The third question was to examine the research regarding feature films negative portrayal of Islam and Muslims own comprehension of the portrayal. The analysis has been conducted as a systematic literature study of material relating to feature films portrayals of Muslims and Arabs, Muslims’ own opinions of the portrayal and material relating to feature films effect on identity.

The reached conclusion is that Hollywood’s feature films portrayal of Islam, Muslim and Arabs are utterly negative and limited. The examined research also shows that feature films have a huge impact on the viewers’ everyday life and concept of the self. Some research shows that feature films is a source to viewers’ existential questions and can also work as building blocks to their own identity. The research regarding Muslims’ own conception of feature films portrayal of Islam where limited. The examined researched show that Muslims’ have been victims of discrimination, hatred and violence from the society. However, how it might inflict the perception of Muslims identity have not been clarified.

    Abstract [sv]

Att exkluderas ifrån sin religion Diskurser i religionsböcker2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    ställdes var;

    • Hur ser diskursen om islam ut i de utvalda läroböckerna?

    • Skiljer sig diskursen om islam ifrån den om kristendom i de utvalda läroböckerna?

    • Finns det fortfarande spår av de diskurser som kritiserades i examensarbete 1 i de utvalda

    läroböckerna?
