    Abstract [en]

Based on my study, Child Labour in Sweden, I will discuss industrial child labour during 1870-1910. Above all, the surveys will contribute to one major problem area, namely the valuation of the children’s labour in various contexts. The project aims to highlight the following questions: What caused child labour? What were the terms for child labour? What were the consequences of child labour?

The survey is conducted through a systematic analysis of workers’ memories from 18 occupational groups, collected by the Nordic Museum.

In the survey, I conduct quantitative and qualitative analyses with the responses per question in the memory list. Data on the extent of schooling and industrial work during childhood is of particular interest for this study. Testimonies describing the surrounding environment and consequences of industrial child labour are analysed as well.

The quantitative analyses mainly cover the scope of the schooling and industrial child labour. The qualitative analyses aim to explore the surrounding environments and the consequences of industrial child labour during school time, for example whether the work generated money for the working families.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Based on my study "From tree felling to silver lining: diverse ways of funding elementary schools among Swedish ironworking communities, 1830–1930", I will discuss power and control of schools by funding.

During the heyday of the Swedish iron industry, distinctive communities typically developed near the ore mining, extraction and processing centres. The early entrepreneurs focused their knowledge and capital on production in order to find ways to exploit local opportunities efficiently for the global market. This early modern entrepreneurship, which strove to control every aspect of the process, transformed social relations at the ironworks. A strong patriarchal spirit came to characterize these small societies, and the ironworks’ early interest in school matters was tightly intertwined with the commitment of the companies’ owners. As a head of the mill, the owner was expected not only to maximize its profit, but also to provide for workers and their families’ safety. Consequently, the iron companies often subsidized churches, warehouses, schools and inns in the vicinity of the blacksmiths’ and the other workers’ housing. The iron companies were able to provide financial support not only to one particular school, but also to the parishes’ school activities in general, which, in the cases considered here, involved several school districts.

In order to answer questions about the expressions, extensions and proportions of private contributions to elementary schools, the study is based on information from selected iron companies’ private archives, selected parishes’ archives, and statistics produced by the Ecclesiastical Office. Data published by Statistics Sweden will also be referenced. The guiding intention behind drawing on these sources is to make use of the overlapping information they contain in order to provide a comprehensive overview. During the session, I will point out how the school districts were affected by the iron companies’ support. What monetary contribution, and what types and amounts of non-monetary support, were provided? What proportion of the total elementary school funding was obtained from the private and public sectors respectively? How did these proportions change over time? In addressing such issues from the perspective of Pierre Bourdieu’s extended notion of capital, this paper will be able not only to answer questions about the character, scope and significance of private funding; there will also be an opportunity to say something about the relation between power and the key process of transformation of economic inheritance into cultural capital.

    Privat folkskolefinansiering2012Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to examine private subsidies provided to the Swedish elementary school system at national, regional and local level, centered on a study of ironworks in the province of Uppland during the period 1850–1930. The main research questions concern the elites’ attitude to public education, why the wealthy donated to education, and the interactions between the school system and private subsidies. This study has explored source materials from the parishes and the ironworks’ archives, the Nordic Museum’s collection with preserved testimonies from ironworks environments, as well as with records from Statistics Sweden.

My investigation has shown that the wealthy owners of ironworks continued to fund schooling during the investigated period, despite the Elementary School Act of 1842. While these contributions were marginalized in relative terms due to increased contributions from the state and municipalities, they were not reduced in nominal amounts. On a local level, they could even increase. Thus, I have argued that this private funding was not crowded out during the period under investigation. I have also shown that while private contributions on average were of minor importance at the national level, they could continue to play a major role at the local level.

The reasons behind this continued support for schooling were many. Contrary to the parishes’ schools, which hampered the children’s participation in farm work, the ironworks schools were well integrated in the ironwork’s operations; schools were used as a kind of labour buffer during the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The schools were also used as instruments of discipline, care and control over the workers children, and could strengthen the donor’s reputation. Although the ironworks contributed to the funding of mass schooling during the period under investigation, this thesis has consequently shown that the ironworks were rewarded for their efforts.

The unwanted citizens: The ‘Legality’ of Jewish destruction in Croatia and Romania during World War II2023In: Comparative Legal History/ Hart Publishing, Oxford, ISSN 2049-677X, E-ISSN 2049-6788, Vol. 11, no 2, p. 226-255Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article examines the establishment of the legal framework that led to the destruction and elimination of Jewish communities in Croatia and Romania during World War II. It argues that both regimes, supported by domestic fascist ideologies, evolving antisemitism, and inspired by the Nazi regime, promulgated anti-Jewish legal norms to present and establish new political, ideological, and social values and categories to their citizens. This article employs the theoretical framework of norms developed by Paul Morrow, whereby norms are seen as practical prescriptions, permissions or prohibitions. We argue that these destructive norms served as guidelines for individuals within the fascist new worldview and new reality. As such, these norms received state authorisation and implementation, serving as the ‘legal’ basis for the institutional destruction of unwanted citizens. This gave local and state actors a ‘legal’ pretext for the persecution and murder of Jews, who were stripped of their rights, assets, properties and right to life. The article concludes that the two legal frameworks enacted the process by which Jewish communities in Croatia and Romania faced a devastation of unseen proportions, which testifies to the importance and impact of legal norms on individuals, be they victims, bystanders or perpetrators.

Bland borgerskapets salonger och kaffekoppar: Kaffekonsumtion och socialt umgänge bland grosshandlare i Gävle 1820-18992020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Liverpool Women´s War Service Bureau

(LWWSB) was a charity that was founded and run by some of Liverpool’s upper-class women during the Great War in 1914-1918. The purpose with this paper is to investigate the work changes LWWSB had to deal with during the war. The focus will be on class, gender and the political quest the upper-class women had in the time before women were entitled to vote. It was also a time when Great Britain was not a welfare state and the class system was well imprinted in the British society. The information about this study was found in Liv-erpool´s history archives in Liverpool Library. The sources contain yearly reports written by LWWSB´s hon.secretary, index over parcels, people they helped, gifts received by donors, letters from soldiers and the newspaper archive.

The result shows that LWWSB was very productive, but that the voluntary workers decreased by the year. The women from lower classes had to get paid jobs to provide for their families and homes when the men had to leave the home front to fight in the war. The result also shows the differences between classes in the charity, for example upper-class women were head of the charity and ruled over the work of lower-class women. Even though the purpose with LWWSB was that women of all classes would work together to support the society with war service during the Great War.

Reworking Italian colonial rhetoric: the case of Italian newspapers and the Trust territory of Somaliland (1950-1960)2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

At the end of the Second World War Italy, contrary to what happened after the first one, found itself in the ranks of the defeated countries and this implied the loss of the African colonies. The research develops from the need to understand how Italian public opinion was actually involved in the national and international debate regarding the future of the former Italian colonies and how Italy's return to Somalia with the international mandate entrusted to it by the UN was reported, while the19th century concept of colonialism was said to be outdated. An analysis of the newspapers such as La Stampa, Corriere della Sera, l'Unità and Avanti! will reveal whether there was a continuity with the colonial rhetoric of the liberal and then fascist period and whether there was a difference between the narrative made by the national newspapers and the party newspapers.

Gotlänningar över Atlanten: En demografisk undersökning av emigrationen från tre orter på Gotland 1876-18882024Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Reseberättelser från Australien: Svenska reseskildrares syn på aboriginerna 1875-19102014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

A Nation's History as Part of its History Education: A current comparative study of Scottish and Swedish secondary school teachers' perception of history, and curricula2024Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This master's thesis explores the perceptions of the Short 20th Century history among high school teachers in Sweden and Scotland, focusing on how their perceptions fit within their own country's curricula's view on the same historic period. The study comprises two parts: an analysis of national history curricula and a survey of history teachers in both countries. Quantitative and qualitative comparisons of educational documents reveal nuanced differences, with Sweden emphasising a global perspective and Scotland maintaining a balanced approach between global and national narratives. Survey results underscore these distinctions, highlighting Swedish teachers' strong emphasis on a global outlook and Scottish educators' recognition of both national and global perspectives. The findings illuminate the diverse educational priorities and approaches to national history in Sweden and Scotland, shedding light on the complex interplay between historical narratives and educational contexts in shaping students' understanding of the Short 20th Century.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is that by interviewing experienced history teachers and analyzing their statements, make practical history-didactic insights visible about how history teaching can be conducted to initiate meaning-creating processes, and thus make the subject of history meaningful to students.

The survey presented that history teachers primarily perceive that meaningful history teaching lies in being able to see and explain change processes. The importance of emphasizing change processes seems to be largely linked to the teachers' private perception of what can be perceived as meaningful. By creating meaning-creating processes for students, increased interest often emerges and thus lead to deeper knowledge of how something can be or be explained.

Meaningfulness seems to be an emotional component. New questions are therefore raised about how much the history teacher's participation, the student base's epistemological perception of the subject of history, and the degree of freedom of interpretation regarding the curriculum can contribute to creating meaning for students, and whether it is possible to achieve equivalent history teaching depending on this context.

En likvärdig skola speglad i historieämnet: En kvalitativ studie av läroplansreformer åren 1978–20112022Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

"…TO LIVE OUR SEPARATE LIVES": Politics, Ethnicity and Change among the Igbo of Nigeria2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Within the theoretical framework of ethnicity, this thesis examines the identity of Ndigbo in the years following the Nigeria-Biafran war. The thesis presents a comparative academic discussions of Igbo ethnic identity from the time of Nigeria’s independence in 1960 to the time after the war, a review of the history of Nigeria from 1979 to 2014 – in a timeframe that is based on Nigeria’s political/ historical development – with focus on the escalations of religious conflict that have characterized the history of the nation and also speeches and interviews of Biafra protagonists on the reason for the agitation for Biafra. The study suggests that the Igbo identity was first strengthened by the events that preceded the Nigeria-Biafra war and the war itself, and now, the rise of radical, militant and political Islam that has enveloped the history of the nation for the period of over thirty years has resulted in a change of identity of the Igbo to a religious Christian identity.

”De Subversiva Elementen”: Brasiliens och Nixonadministrationens intervention i Uruguay2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

During the 1960s and 1970s, the military seized power in several Latin American countries. Uruguay's transformation from "the Switzerland of South America" to one of the harshest dictatorships in the region did not happen isolation, but during a longer process in which outside actors also played a crucial role. This essay uses a range of recently declassified American and Brazilian documents to demonstrate how these two countries, sometimes independently and sometimes with some coordination, influenced Uruguay during the critical period when the country's military took control of the country.

    Abstract [sv]

Beslut för barnets eller samhällets bästa?: Barnavårdsnämnden i Mönsterås köping 1926—19342021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Bini Customary law of inheritence : a shift in Igiogbe as a case study 2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Igiogbe cultural heritage has existed since the founding of Bini kingdom without any controversy; however since the Supreme Court decision in Idehen v Idehen the issue of Igiogbe has assumed new dimensions. Igiogbe - the house in which a Benin man lived and died devolves on his first son absolutely; but since the beginning of 20th century litigation as to the real meaning of Igiogbe and who is entitled to inheritance thereof began to increase.

Controversies and increase in litigation over Igiogbe has occasioned a shift in the practice, the Bini’s are not conscious of some of these changes, most of them (Bini’s) still claim Igiogbe practices is rigidly adhered to. This study on Igiogbe inheritance in Bini kingdom is therefore carried out with a view to bringing out the changes in Igiogbe cultural practice using legal and anthropological tools to examine the changes.

While laying the foundation for the discussion on the main research object the researcher examined the origin and status of customary law in Nigeria. There after I examined Igiogbe inheritance in Bini kingdom. Igiogbe and the issue of first son were critically analyzed with the aid of the research questions bringing out the changes in Igiogbe concept from traditional practice to modern practice. Study shows Igiogbe practice is still relevant in modern Bini kingdom, however, the shift and changes in practice of this cultural milieu has lead me to ask some fundamental questions which I intend to answer in the broader research work in future.

Somali Irredentism: An analysis of its causes and its impact on political stability in Somalia from 1960 -19912021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

After Berlin Conference in 1884 to 1885, Somalia was partitioned into five parts by Britain, Italy, and French. In 1960 two parts gained independence and formed the Somali Republic, and since then successive Somali governments sought to incorporate the other three parts of Somali territories under Ethiopia, Kenya and French Somaliland known as Djibouti into Greater Somalia. The aim of this study has been to explore and analyze the causes, and the impact of the Somalia’ irredentism on political stability in Somalia. In more specifically, the main objective has been to critically examine how Somali irridentism policy has been pursued, what challenges faced and how it has affected the political stability of the post-colonial Somali state from 1960 to 1990.The analysis presented in this study has shown that the causes of Somali irredentism are combined factors that helped rise Somali irredentism. The analysis has argued that Somalia’s quest for irredentism policy had a huge impact on Somalia’s political stability, including, but not limited to, creating enemies and alienating allies from neighbouring countries to western and eastern blocs, as well as interstate conflict with Ethiopia which ended with Somalia defeat. Finally, Somalia’s defeat, which resulted from irredentism’s venture, caused disunity among the national army, refugee crisis, financial burden and the rise of armed opposition movements that finally ousted the military regime led by Siad Barre. This was followed by state collapse and protracted civil war.

South-South Cooperation between Realism and Constructivism: A comparative content analysis of Brazilian and Chinese development cooperation models in Africa2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The global development landscape is being notably changed by the recently significant rise of South-South Cooperation (SSC) with emerging countries playing a significant and more autonomous role in the provision of development cooperation. The number and type of initiatives that are been carried out within SSC are reshaping lots of the issues related to development, particularly in the African continent. African countries have indeed witnessed a notorious increase in development assistance’s flows from emerging powers such as Brazil and China. Yet, while China’s presence in Africa has often been the subject of much critical debate, Brazil’s reputation has not been equally questioned. Against this backdrop, why Chinese development cooperation has been framed so differently, with a clearly negative connotation, by the vast majority of the existing literature? My research stemmed mainly by this question.

SSC is defined by a set of guiding principles that have to be fulfilled. This normative aspect of SSC represents a sort of “safe net” for development initiatives, granting a certain standard in the implementation of the project as well as protecting the interests of the beneficiary countries. By relying on such principles I will address the contrasting characterization of Chinese and Brazilian development cooperation in order to demonstrate that their strategies are more akin that it may appear.

This thesis wants to be a contribution to the extended debate and criticism regarding Chinese development cooperation projects in Africa by proposing a comparative perspective that aligns China with Brazil. My claim will rely on the fulfillment by both countries of the main principles that guide SSC. Out of practical reasons, the observance of such principles will be assessed through the content analysis of primary and secondary sources on the following projects: Brazilian agricultural cooperation project – the Cotton-4 project - , and Chinese infrastructure initiative – Kaléta Hydropower Station in Guinea. My critical approach will combine two theoretical traditions of International Relations: Realism and Constructivism, which, from my point of view, may be both of use in understanding the multiple facets of these countries’ involvement in Africa’s development.

Folkmakt eller herremakt?: En närläsning av rösträttsdebatterna i riksdagen 1906 och 19072020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to analyze history teachers' experiences of encounters with different historical-cultures in multicultural classrooms, and to identify their didactic strategies to respond to these. The study is carried out in three stages consisting of a preliminary survey, a questionnaire survey and then two face-to-face interviews. The study is aimed at highschool teachers in the subject of history and is searching for teachers who have dealt with different historical-cultures in the classroom and how they think about teaching methods, challenges, opportunities and strategies. The study concludes that historical-cultural differences can be expressed through out a lack of prior knowledge, through students not recognizing themselves in the history that is presented and discussed during the lessons. The study also shows through conflicts and emotional expressions related to different perspectives and interpretations of history. The survey then shows that the majority of the participating teachers sees opportunities in having several historical-cultures present in the classroom and believe that it opens up more perspectives, which all students can benefit from. This is because the students gain a broader awareness of history and feel that they are not presenting a "proper historical narrative". The strategies that are presented for meeting and dealing with different historical-cultures in teaching are largely about the teacher needing to build good relationships with the students and developing a safe classroom climate. It´s also important that the group is safe with eachother, in order to be able to discuss historical cultural differences in a respectful and rewarding way. The teaching should also be strategically planned based on which group the teaching will take place in. This is to avoid anyone feeling offended, or conflicts between students to occur. Despite the fact that historical and cultural differences can be perceived as sensitive or conflict-creating, the survey shows that teachers find it extremely important to show different historical perspectives in order to make the subject relevant to all students in the classroom.

African Diaspora in modern Ecuador:: Citizenship, Cultural Identity and Political Rights of Afro-Ecuadorians.2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The thesis examines the black population in contemporary Ecuador. In demographic terms, Ecuador is con-sidered the fourth largest country in South America, after Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela, with more nuclei of African descent. Therefore, the aim of this research is to explore how Afro-Ecuadorians, as a minority group, have constructed and continue to redefine their cultural identity in Ecuador, in order to understand whether and how it has been connected or is still connected to their African roots.

From the legislative perspective, the research presents an analysis of the rights of the Afro-Ecuadorians in the Constitutional Charters, focusing both on the 1998 Constitution, which adopted multiculturalism as a fundamental principle of the nation, thus recognizing for the first time the collective rights of Afro-Ecuadorians. In addition, the Constitutional Charter of 2008, in which multiculturalism extends to the con-cept of interculturality, conceptualized as a pillar of the State of Ecuador. The new constitution penalizes discrimination and adopts laws that provide a wide range of cultural, economic, and political rights for mi-nority groups.

Finally, the empirical part of this research was carried out during the fieldwork. My methods included partic-ipant observation, semi-structured individual interviews, and Focus Groups. My aim was to explore cultural identity, the perceptions, thoughts and feelings opinions of Afro – Ecuadorians in the province of Esmeraldas in Ecuador.

    Abstract [en]

This study examines specific cases of irregular trade during the final decades of Swedish Pomerania with help of case material from the city archives in Stralsund and Wismar, as well as contemporary newspaper advertisements from Stralsundische Zeitung, and reflects those in the light of prevalence of overall factors for smuggling, namely the impact of globalization, the grade of organization of a national economy, economic borders and relationship to the Swedish state, as well as modern consump-tion, and the inclination of the individual smuggler. An imbalance both within itself and in comparison with neighboring emerging national states, as a result of weak economic state power in combination with Swedish support for Swedish-Pomeranian sea trade, turned Swedish Pomerania into a smuggler’s haven.
