Harry Potter och Hemligheterna bakom adaptionen: En semiotisk analys om hur Harry Potter som karaktär översatts från bok till film i ”Hemligheternas Kammare”2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Simulation and optimisation techniques for sawmill yard operation: A literature review2014In: Journal of Intelligent Learning Systems and Applications, ISSN 2150-8410, Vol. 6, no 1, p. 21-34Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Increasing costs and competitive business strategies are pushing sawmill enterprises to make an effort for optimization of their process management. Organizational decisions mainly concentrate on performance and reduction of operational costs in order to maintain profit margins. Although many efforts have been made, effective utilization of resources, optimal planning and maximum productivity in sawmill are still challenging to sawmill industries. Many researchers proposed the simulation models in combination with optimization techniques to address problems of integrated logistics optimization. The combination of simulation and optimization technique identifies the optimal strategy by simulating all complex behaviours of the system under consideration including objectives and constraints. During the past decade, an enormous number of studies were conducted to simulate operational inefficiencies in order to find optimal solutions. This paper gives a review on recent developments and challenges associated with simulation and optimization techniques. It was believed that the review would provide a perfect ground to the authors in pursuing further work in optimizing sawmill yard operations.

Optimization of Operational Overhead based on the Evaluation of Current Snow Maintenance System: A Case Study of Borlänge, Sweden2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study analyzes snow maintenance data of Borlänge municipality of Sweden based on the data of 2017 to 2018. The goal of this study is to reduce operational overhead of snow maintenance, for example, fuel and time consumption of the snow maintenance vehicles, work hour of dedicated personnel, etc. Borlänge Energy equipped the snow maintenance vehicles with GPS devices which stored the record of the snow maintenance activities. The initial part of this study obtained insights out of the GPS data by using spatiotemporal data analysis. Derivation of the different snow maintenance treatments (plowing, sanding and salting) as well as the efficiency of the sub-contractors (companies which are responsible for snow maintenance) and inspectors (personnel who are liable to call the subcontractors if they think it is time for snow maintenance) are performed in the beginning of this study. The efficiency of the subcontractors and inspectors are measured to compare their performance with each other.

The latter part of this study discusses a simulated annealing-based heuristics technique to find out optimal location for dispatching snow maintenance vehicles. In the existing system of snow maintenance, drivers of the maintenance vehicles decide to start location of maintenance work based on their experience and intuition, which might vary from one driver to another driver. The vehicle dispatch locations are calculated based on the availability of the vehicles. For example, if a subcontractor has three vehicles to perform snow maintenance on a specific road map, the proposed solution would suggest three locations to dispatch those vehicles.

The purpose of finding the optimal dispatch location is to reduce the total travel distance of the maintenance vehicles, which yield less fuel and time consumption. The study result shows the average travel distance for 1, 3, and 5 vehicles on 15 road networks. The proposed solution would yield 18% less travel than the existing system of snow maintenance.

Inomhuspositionering med tre olika tekniker – Bluetooth Low Energy, Wi-Fi och GPS: En jämförelsestudie av positioneringsverktyg vid inomhuspositionering2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Different navigation techniques are something that people uses on a daily basis. It has

been and still is an important part in the history of mankind, initially navigation was about

being able to navigate at sea using the stars, and today many people around the world have

some kind of smartphone that can be used as a navigation tool.

Indoor positioning is something that has become a hot topic in the last decade and since

GPS has bad precision indoors new technologies has been developed to navigate and

position objects indoors. Some leading technologies now includes Bluetooth Low Energy

beacons and Wi-Fi, where you can position a user indoors using triangulation-techniques.

The question still remains, which technique is viable for indoor positioning.

This study has been conducted as a combination of two strategies, starting with a

comparison study of three different positioning techniques, BLE, Wi-Fi and GPS, to come

to a conclusion which positioning technique is suitable for indoor positioning. After the

conclusion we evaluated the technique in the form of an experiment in which several

factors, mainly the precision, are tested. In this study, BLE beacon were used as the

positioning tool because it was easy to implement but also to able to achieve high precision

    in the right environment.

To test the beacons, a light application prototype was developed that had the main

purpose of positioning a user in a coordinate system using XY values. By using

triangulation to position the user. The study achieved a mean margin of approximately 76

centimeters when five beacons were used in a 4 x 3 meter area. The conclusion was BLE

beacons is a suitable tool when it comes to indoor positioning and that there is a lot of

difference in precision when using too few or poorly placed beacons.

DisTrain: a simulation tool for train dispatching2005In: Proceedings 2005 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Conference (ITSC), Vienna, Austria: IEEE , 2005Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper introduces main motivations and ideas of the tool called DisTrain whioch is an on-going work. The purpose of thistool is to provide a library to work and solve the Train Dispatching (or re-scheduling) problem. This paper is organized as follow: The first section introduce the briefly the problem and give a small litterature survey around this problem. The second section describes the main motivations and goals of this tool. Section III explain how the problem is represented and the interface between data and the library. Section IV explain how the library works and explain how different algorithms can solve this problem and why they should be tried. The fifth section targets practical issues. Then, section VI, VII conclude this paper and point out the future of DisTrain. This paper describes an on-going research work on the train dispatching problem. This dispatching or re-scheduling problem (which is NP-complete in general cases) lacks a benchmark or a library to test different algorithms. Therefore, we present a modelisation of the problem, on which our future tool is based. The tool is decomposed into a simulation engine (event driven) which may use different algorithms to solve the problem. Different algorithms may be used and tried

A computational comparison of different algorithms for very large p-median problems2015In: Evolutionary Computation in Combinatorial Optimization: 15th European Conference, EvoCOP 2015, Copenhagen, Denmark, April 8-10, 2015, Proceedings / [ed] Gabriela Ochoa, Francisco Chicano, Springer, 2015, Vol. 9026, p. 13-24Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper, we propose a new method for solving large scale p-median problem instances based on real data. We compare different approaches in terms of runtime, memory footprint and quality of solutions obtained. In order to test the different methods on real data, we introduce a new benchmark for the p-median problem based on real Swedish data. Because of the size of the problem addressed, up to 1938 candidate nodes, a number of algorithms, both exact and heuristic, are considered. We also propose an improved hybrid version of a genetic algorithm called impGA. Experiments show that impGA behaves as well as other methods for the standard set of medium-size problems taken from Beasley’s benchmark, but produces comparatively good results in terms of quality, runtime and memory footprint on our specific benchmark based on real Swedish data.

Sergio Leones karaktärsintroduktioner2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

A fistful of dollars (1964), For a few dollars more (1965), The good, the bad, and the ugly (1966) samt Once upon a time in the west (1968).

    Abstract [en]

Solid State Drives (SSD) are relatively new and not much is known about them. This thesis focuses on retrieving forensically important information, not only from the storage area of the SSD but also from the spare area. This was attempted by writing a program in C++ that, using ATA commands, could read information from the SSD. Although the program was not finished within the given time, it could read some information from the SSD, but not the spare area which was the main focus.

Färgens Känslomässiga Anknytning: En studie om hur färg påverkar åskådarens känslor i möte med medier2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Narrativ instrumentering i film: En undersökning om hur instrumenteringen påverkar musikens berättande funktion i film2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Testdeltagarna

fick se tre versioner av ett klipp ur filmen Into the Wild.

Licenshantering inom webbprojekt: Hur medvetna är företag om tredjepartslicenser?2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In todays rapid technology development, there is a great need of reusing other developers code libraries to keep up with the fast pace. These code libraries are called frameworks or libraries depending on their purpose, and helps the developers to develop a product from start to finish faster than doing it all by their own. These third party software is almost always bound to a license with restrictions and permissions the developer needs to follow.

In this thesis we are going to investigate the awareness of the licenses that are bound to these third party software. We found out in our pre study that the awareness where low and therefore we investigated how the awareness could be raised. In order to do this, we interviewed developers and project managers at a consulting firm. We also investigated what solutions there is to raise the awareness of third party licenses, and the problems caused by insufficient license management.

We found out that there is inadequate knowledge about license management at the firm, and how the developer follows the restrictions and permissions that is bound to the license. To raise the awareness, we suggest tools to raise the awareness in form of a centralised solution, lazybones to easier understand the license agreement and already existing software to help the license management.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study, which was conducted in collaboration with the consulting firm Pipe, studied information management processes of small businesses in the retail industry. The company dedicated to design store using CAD software today has no connection between the CAD program and the clouddatabase that stores information. The aim is to explore how the proposed measures might take for the company to improve their information management through the use out of a clouddatabase. We have also described the problem area of the connections between the cloudatabases and design applications. To answer the study's end, we conducted a case study and answer research questions, 1. How does the information management process work today? 2. How can the information management process be improved?

    2. What work steps could be taken away if the company faced a link between the clouddatabase and design software? 3. Is a cloud-based solution suitable to use for small businesses in the retail industry? 4. What is the situation in other industries that use CAD software? We found by conducting interviews. The interviews helped us to implement a change analysis in which we act through graphs and goal- and problem lists have come up with a number of proposed measures that the company should implement to improve their information management process. Based on the analysis of change, we have to conclude that the information process could be improved and speeded up by introducing a link between design software and a clouddatabase. This would mean that the material is automatically uploaded from your design software to the clouddatabase, which is also the customer has access to. In this way, gather all the information in one place. Through literature studies, we have also come to the conclusion that a cloud-based solution would be appropriate for the company, since it is a cheap and convenient solution for companies that do not have as many resources.

Musikbranschens dörrvakter: En kvalitativ undersökning om yrkesrollen A&R hos svenska skivbolag2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Feasibility of spirography features for objective assessment of motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease2015In: Artificial Intelligence in Medicine: 15th Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Medicine, AIME 2015, Pavia, Italy, June 17-20, 2015. Proceedings / [ed] John Holmes, Riccardo Bellazzi, Lucia Sacchi and Niels Peek, Springer, 2015, Vol. 9105, p. 267-276Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Parkinsons disease (PD) is currently incurable, however the proper treatment can ease the symptoms and significantly improve the quality of patients life. Since PD is a chronic disease, its efficient monitoring and management is very important. The objective of this paper is to investigate the feasibility of using the features and methodology of a spirography device, originally designed to measure early Parkinsons disease (PD) symptoms, for assessing motor symptoms of advanced PD patients suffering from motor fluctuations. More specifically, the aim is to objectively assess motor symptoms related to bradykinesias (slowness of movements occurring as a result of under-medication) and dyskinesias (involuntary movements occurring as a result of over-medication). The work combines spirography data and clinical assessments from a longitudinal clinical study in Sweden with the features and pre-processing methodology of a Slovenian spirography application. The target outcome was to learn to predict the “cause” of upper limb motor dysfunctions as assessed by a clinician who observed animated spirals in a web interface. Using the machine learning methods with feature descriptions from the Slovenian application resulted in 86% classification accuracy and over 90% AUC, demonstrating the usefulness of this approach for objective monitoring of PD patients.

Samhällsnyttiga budskap i reklamform: Har påverkansfilmen potential att nå ut till flera?2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

An exploratory study of women micro enterprises owners' perceptions of economic policy in rural local district: gender-related differences2003In: Journal of Small Business and Enterprise Development, ISSN 1462-6004, E-ISSN 1758-7840, Vol. 10, no 4, p. 408-417Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article assesses gender-related differences in rural enterprises and examines implications for development of economic policy and services in a rural district of Sweden. The article focuses on female owned micro enterprises. A quantitative and qualitative survey of 32 micro enterprise owners was carried out. Focus was on owner attitudes toward local governmental policies and programmes. There were not strong differences between genders for items using multiple-choice responses. Where qualitative, written responses were solicited there were some differences in perceptions and attitudes. The female respondents tended to write more and respond in ways that suggest that they tend to reflect more upon the future and new possibilites. Differences in style of operation were evident; others have reported this. Written responses from female participants described in greater detail and more clearly the ongoing need for governmental support of networking activities and other programmes that promote cooperation and resource pooling (regardless of gender).

The use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the rehabilitation of individuals with severe functional impairments in a municipal care service system2005In: Work: A journal of Prevention, Assesment and rehabilitation, ISSN 1051-9815, E-ISSN 1875-9270, Vol. 24, no 3, p. 229-238Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article explores the development of a scheme to use Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the training of individuals with severe functional impairments. Computers were used as an integral part of a rehabilitation programme for training, and the authors found that the resource was a useful addition to other treatment methods. This article describes the development and subsequent setting up of computers for training and how the study progressed. The study used a somewhat unique bottom up approach that first trained care-giving staff in computer skills. The caregivers in turn worked with and trained some of those they served. This learning strategy drew upon the concept of learning, empowerment and the motivation of all involved in a system and process. The study found that by using ICT all involved felt a greater sense of empowerment and improvement in the quality of life. That caregivers were involved at all stages was valuable in that they felt an ownership of the process and that they also benefited from being involved because they also learned new skills.

    Abstract [en]

The county of Västernorrland and Jämtland, like most of the remote and rural areas in the Northern Periphery, face common challenges consisting of limited economic resources, high sickness rates and major recruitment needs in the future. Developed eservice may be one of the solutions to these problems: a solution especially well-suited to sparsely populated areas. In this paper, we have summarized the exciting current challenges and opportunities in the domain of e-governmental services and indicated some areas of special interest for promoting the transition to an information society with enhanced e-services for the rural citizens. There are increased interest in e-service and the will to improve the services offered to citizens and the business community.

Locus of control of owner managers and business networks in SMEs2009In: , 2009Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Research has shown locus of control to be an important construct for explaining leadership behaviour. A key component in this study is the exploration of the relationship between locus of control and how owner-managers of SME’s perceive and value their own firms’ use of networking. Our emphasis in this paper is on some of the psychological aspects of networking. Of particular interest is using the findings about leadership styles to gain a better general understanding of the processes and structural patterns of inter organisational networks. We have studied 60 SME’s in a small industrial park in rural Sweden, using the psychological construct locus of control as a main variable to investigate the perceived usage and value of networks. This result confirms hypothesis which states that the number of networks in which a firm participates is positively related to its owner-manager’s internal locus of control. Which means that owner-manager locus of control influences the use of business networks, with those having an internal locus of control appearing to be more active in networks and rating the benefits of networking higher than those with an external locus of control. This finding supports the general research direction of this study that owner-managers with an internal locus of control are more likely to view networking as a tool they can use to influence their business environment.

    Abstract [en]

The Internet forms an important component of eGovernment strategy, the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in public administrations combined with organisational change and new skills in order to improve public services. In this paper we describe the work in progress in a Swedish project called Mitt företag by NUTEK aimed to provision of One-Stop-Shop services to people who want to start their own business. We are going to present a usability evaluation study of the Website of Swedish Company Registration Office and the Swedish National Tax Board. The e-service has a low level of acceptance among user since many of the tasks take too much time and effort to complete. Comparing these results against our usability measures and the golden heuristic rules we find many discrepancies.

    Abstract [en]

Design of Electronic Public Information Systems (e-PIS) can benefit from the inclusion of guidelines that consider the needs of users. Inclusion of guidelines and prototyping practices that take into consideration the capabilities of human users make it possible to avoid errors that would otherwise significantly reduce efficiencies offered by Informationtechnology (IT). Design strategies that include consideration of the Human Factor (HF) within e-PIS are introduced and discussed. Argued is that without integration of design strategies that consider human capabilities the efficiencies brought about through the use of electronic technology are significantly reduced. Through the study of intended user behaviours during the development of systems loss of efficiency is avoided.

E-Government: An Improvement in Service?2004Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Managers and other key staff involved in the development of Swedish e-government services were interviewed about their perceptions of changes caused by the shift from more traditional forms of government service delivery. Almost all were satisfied with the progress of the transition. It was felt that a shift to systems that are electronically based will result in economies and greater organizational efficiency. When questioned about potential problems, most felt they were manageable. However, they did not describe strategies indicating that problems were being addressed and managed. Focus was on getting functioning systems in place and then resolving with problems as identified. Evident was that issues such as being able to effectively evaluate progress/success, creating systems accessible by all potential users, information security, understanding costs and planning for rapid technology change were being minimized or ignored. Apparent is that until the issues are adequately addressed final cost is unknown, e-government systems will not by accessible by some citizens because they lack the skills and/or resources needed to take advantage of services offered, and the extent of change is unclear. Recommended is to better define real and potential problems and then to include solutions in e-government planning, design and implementation processes.

Acceptance of e-invoicing in SMEs2009In: Engineering Psychology and Cognitive Ergonomics: 8th International Conference, EPCE 2009, Held as Part of HCI International 2009, San Diego, CA, USA, July 19-24, 2009. Proceedings / [ed] Harris, D, Berlin: Springer Berlin/Heidelberg, 2009, Vol. 5639, p. 289-296Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Electronic invoicing (e-invoicing) refers to the sending and receiving of invoices by electronic means. Small and media sized enterprises (SMEs) have not accepted e-invoicing to the same extent as large companies and the public sector in Sweden. The purpose of present study was to gain a better understanding of the acceptance of e-invoicing in SMEs, particularly small business, by describing the factors that affect e-invoicing in SMEs in rural area. The study is a part of a going on project "The Digital Age in Rural and Remote Areas" DARRA. We proposed a research model that found significant in prior research and grouped them into four different factors; organisational readiness, external pressure, owner/manager characteristics, and perceived benefit in the perception of e-invoicing in SMEs. To validate the model we collected data from owners/managers of SMEs by using a survey. The main results from present study indicate that SMEs are ready for acceptance of e-invoicing. Pressure from customers is considered to be an important factor for e- invoicing acceptance in SMEs. Furthermore, the SMEs perceive that acceptance of e-invoicing can be beneficial, and lead to increased internal efficiency as well as impact on business processes and relationships. The innovativeness of the owner/manager was also found to influence acceptance of e-invoicing.

Evaluation user interface of VDU in a process control room2011In: Ergonomics for all: Celebrating PPCOE's 20 Years of Excellence / [ed] Lin, Dyi-Yih Michael, Leiden: CRC Press, 2011, p. 73-77Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Varied types of Visual Display Unit (VDU) are used in modern process control rooms. The main purpose of present study is to identify and find solutions to usability problems of VDU user interface in process control room. The usability evaluation methods were heuristic evaluation, usability test, and SUMI questionnaire. Fifteen operators participated in the study. The main result from the usability test were that the time to solve the task depends on the number of false clicks and commands, and participants experienced that user interface doesn't support in an efficient manner, too many and difficult steps must be performed. To improve the user interface of VDU we have created number of guidelines; for example; create groups of the fields, buttons, text, place the buttons in functionally way, enable the user to open multiple windows, drag and drop is a dynamic operation.
