    Abstract [en]

Among the many refugees applying for asylum in Sweden are a great number of unaccompanied children. The integration in the society of these young people is a challenge and the school system meets many difficulties in this process. The most important aspects are the teaching, the organisation of the education and the school as a social arena. The study is based on three sociological theories and the method chosen, a thorough interview with a limited number of respondents is more suited in this case since it must be regarded as a qualitative rather than a quantitative study. Yet the character is rather deductive. A conclusion in this study is that a school has several purposes: to teach the new country´s language, then gradually the ordinary school subjects and all along to promote all contacts with the surrounding society. One problem observed and disputed is whether the newcomer should be placed in integrated classes or in separate language groups, and another the proportion of time spent on cognitive learning and socialising with native Swedes, both essential. A conclusion is also that a teacher´s role is supporting in general, esp. when a newcomer suffers from traumas in the home country.

Från hemmafru till autentisk människa: Kärlek och reklam i Vecko Revyn 1942-941996In: Sociologisk forskning, ISSN 0038-0342, Vol. 33, no 4, p. 16-35Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article is based on a study of advertising and material covering ”existential issues”, such as love, sexuality and the body in a Swedish young women’s magazine ”Vecko Revyn”. The period studied runs from 1942-94.

It’s main argument is that the representation of female identity has gone through three distinct phases: During the 1940-50’s, the subject of these discourses was represented as a ’type’ who was attributed needs for commodities as well as romantic emotions with reference to expectations contained in a certain social role. During the 1960-70:s she was represented as an individual who’s primary concern was to express her own individuality. During the 1980-90:s, finally, she became an authentic ”person” concerned not only with expressing, but also with finding her own subjectivity.

A similar development has been a core assumption of some recent sociological theories particularlyemployed within the field of youth research. There it has been argued that individual identity has become to a lesser extent determined by social structure and to an increasing extent the product of a ”reflexive” process of identity formation, leading to an overriding concern with subjective authenticity. Although the observations presented indeed seem to give some additional credibility to such an assumption, it is argued that these changes - at least as far as advertising goes, might be better explained by innovations in the techniques of representation employed by the advertising industry.

Opinions of social web users on privacy and online DAM2010In: Journal of Digital Asset Management, ISSN 1743-6540, Vol. 6, no 6, p. 312-318Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The web today hosts thousands of web user profiles. These profiles contain information, which is sensitive – a reason why the information is protected from illegal use by privacy policies. This kind of information is at times referred to as online digital assets. Online digital assets are either hosted on private or government websites and online systems depending on where users are registered. There is a possibility that after death or impairment of a user, the confidentiality of online digital assets may be compromised due to absence of ownership and weak legal policies. This may result into privacy infringement of the owner, that is, the deceased or the impaired as well as other people related to the affected user such as those that have had sensitive conversations with him or her. Using Facebook as a case study, this research examined social web users’ opinions on privacy and online digital assets management (DAM) after death or impairment of a user. The study used an online questionnaire to collect opinions from 22 Facebook users. Results show that the majority of respondents consider privacy and online DAM to be important issues. On the other hand, other Facebook users think that privacy in social networking websites is a mere illusion. There are also users who are not familiar with the concept of DAM and do not have any means of managing their assets in case of impairment or death.

On mobile learning with Learning Content Management Systems: a contemporary literature review2014In: Mobile as a Mainstream – Towards Future Challenges in Mobile Learning: 13th World Conference on Mobile and Contextual Learning, mLearn 2014, Istanbul, Turkey, November 3-5, 2014, Proceedings / [ed] Marco Kalz, Yasemin Bayyurt & Marcus Specht, 2014, p. 131-145Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Learning Content Management Systems (LCMS) are important tools for organizing learning material and communication. Increasingly mobile technologies are used for internet access; particularly important in developing countries where broadband is scarce. Mobile LCMS introduce specific challenges, which are yet not fully addressed. This paper reviews the literature on mobile LCMS for the purpose of identifying current research focus, research gaps, and future research directions regarding how to bridge the gaps and leverage CMS technology to support “mobile learning”. The concept matrix method is used to collect and analyze literature. Five prominent research areas are found; Use, access, design and infrastructure; communication and collaboration; engagement and knowledge development; content and service delivery; and implementation experiences and evaluation. A major gap identified is that research does neither clearly nor thoroughly address the intersection between learning and technology. Adjusting technologies to learning contexts and environments is a key area for future research.

Practices and challenges in an emerging m-learning environment2017In: ijEDict - International Journal of Education and Development using Information and Communication Technology, ISSN 1814-0556, E-ISSN 1814-0556, Vol. 13, no 1, p. 103-122Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study reports an interpretative case study investigating practices and challenges in an emerging m-learning environment at Makerere University in Uganda. The research was part of the MobiClass pilot project. Data was collected by means of observations and interviews with teachers and various m-learning support staff, including teacher trainers, systems administrators and a software developer. The Framework for Rational Analysis of Mobile Education (FRAME) is used as an analytic framework. The research focuses on how learning content management systems (LCMS) are implemented and used for m-learning purposes. We observed teacher training and m-learning content development practices and found that teacher skills for developing educational content, institutional m-learning policies and training programs are crucial success factors. The main finding is the importance of the support staff; it takes a long time to implement new technology and change teaching practices, support staff is needed to manage, inspire and support student and teachers.

Using technology for enhancing transparency and accountability in low resource communities: experiences from Uganda2013In: ICT for Anti-Corruption, Democracy and Education In East Africa / [ed] Katja Sarajeva, Stockholm: Spider , 2013, p. 37-51Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This study aimed at investigating the user needs, practices, experiences and challenges faced in promoting transparency and accountability using ICT in low-resource communities. The research was conducted on two ICT4D (Information and Communication Technology for Development) initiatives, a call center, and a telecenter supported by two projects; (1) “Promoting Social Accountability In The Health Sector In Northern Uganda”, (2) “Catalyzing Civic Participation And Democracy Monitoring Using ICTs”. The two projects sought to fight corruption by increasing transparency and accountability using ICT to enable “whistle-blowing,” i.e., reporting misconduct in service provision. The projects are based in Uganda and are carried out by Spider (Swedish Program for ICT in Developing Regions) partner organizations: Transparency International (TI) Uganda and Collaboration International ICT Policy in East and Southern Africa (CIPESA). Using interviews, focus group discussions and observations, the study addressed three research questions: (1) How have the two projects provided citizens a trusted and effective channel for “whistle-blowing”? (2) What are the enabling factors for whistle-blowing through ICT and challenges that affect whistle-blowers and how can the challenges be overcome?

The ICT service-delivery monitoring and reporting methods used by projects include toll free phone calls, blogs, radio talk shows, SMS and e-mail for reaching out; and processes for verification of reports and for communicating reports to government. There are results that indicate these methods are sound enough to serve the purposes of transparency and accountability, and the track record exhibits real change achieved in many instances. ICT users are optimistic and trustful of these ICT methods. Effective whistle-blowing includes efficient and effective reporting processes, convenience in reporting, actual service delivery improvements, availability and privacy, and affordability. There are also a number of challenges, including user education, gender issues, and general issues pertaining to the business model, including economic sustainability and finding the most effective scope of the operations.

Evaluating aspects of sustainability in tourism at a mountain destination: Accessibility and economic impacts assessment in Sälen: Case of Sälen in Sweden2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Travelling to, from and within the destination area accounts for a high level of tourism emissions. Yet, little has been done to improve and direct the travelling pattern at reducing carbon dioxide emissions. By encouraging visitors to use public rather private transport also limits traffic congestion and increases the use of public space by means of walking and cycling therefore enhancing destination competitiveness. Although there have a number of attempts to encourage the use of public transportation over car use, it still remains a challenge. This paper reports the findings of surveys of tourists who visited Sälen during the peak season of Easter break and projected their travel choice and spending patterns within the destination. The results shows that there is a relationship between location, accessibility and tourist expenditure.

Therefore, understanding the pattern of visitors’ expenditures within a destination can serve as a strategic element in economic sustainability and capturing factors that have a high expenditure at a destination.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Thomas J Scheffs socialpsykologi. En introduktion1996In: Sociologisk forskning, ISSN 0038-0342, Vol. 33, no 1, p. 71-86Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This articel is an introduction to the socialpsychology of Thomas J Scheff. Scheff is a Professor emeritus at University of California, Santa Barbara. His work has not been introduced for a Swedish audience before, and therefore the article concentrates on some general aspects of the theory. It begins with a part where some characteristic aspects of Scheffs theory is outlined in relation to a more conventional socialpsychology. The text continues with a treatment of the central concepts of the theory. Social bond is the most important concept. Social bonds are the forces that keeps people together. In Scheffs view the buildning of bonds is the most fundamental human motive. The status of the social bond can be discovered in different ways. The method Scheff uses includes description, interpretation and analysis of communication, both in the verbal and the non-verbal sence. Scheff argues that strong bonds are built through communication that follows specific forms. The concept attunement is apt to describe these forms. The status of the bond is also dependent on the degree of differentiation in the relation. Secure bonds follows from optimal differentiation. Broken or damaged bonds can be characterized in terms of alienation. Scheff speaks of two main forms of alienation; engulfinent and isolation. A third factor that is important for the status of the bond is the kinds of emotions that operate in its maintenance. Shame and pride is according to this theory the master-emotions in human existence. They play a primary role in human conduct by giving the actors instinctive indications of the status of the bond. The last part of the article deals with what the theory has to say about social relationships in the modem society.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to examine care managers perception of working with elderly people with alcoholic and addiction problems. This is answered through a focus group interview with four care managers from a municipality in the central part of Sweden. Empirical data has been analyzed with content analysis and linked to previous research and theory of collaboration, self-determination and legal, moral and organizational conditions.Result shows that care managers working with elderly consider that alcohol and addiction problems can result in both social and health problems in the elderly’s life. They also notice a greater social acceptance around alcohol consumption by elderly women and men than two decades ago. Care managers experience that moral conditions can affect their discretion in a negative way, that cooperation with their own unit and the unit for abuse works properly when cooperation is needed and that care managers also notice that autonomy is among the most important approach when working with elderly people with alcohol and addiction.

    Forms of interaction

In this article, the theoretical notion of forms of interaction is introduced, which comprehends how the network and domain structures provide a background for interaction. This general approach is used to discuss how persons can style their identities. Today’s forms of interaction enable people to hide information in interaction with other people. People can, for example, present themselves as individualized, important and successful in interaction with others. This facilitates the emergence of certain values. Especially individualistic values are studied in this article.

    Abstract [en]

In order to be able to be a professional athlete in Sweden today, resources are needed and therefore sponsorship from companies has come to mean a large part for many individual athletes' careers. However, it is quite uncertain what is required of an individual athlete for companies to want to cooperate with them and with sponsorship comes risks for the company. The purpose of the study is to investigate which goals and motives companies have to sponsor an individual athlete and why they choose to sponsor them. Why the essay focuses on an individual athlete is because previous research has shown that it is more difficult for individual athletes than team athletes to live as professionals because of scarce resources.    The study has applied a qualitative method in which six interviews have been conducted with companies that sponsor individual athletes. Following the completion of the study, we can explain the companies' goal of sponsoring individual athletes as follows: Increase sales, develop and strengthen the company's brand and image and increase brand awareness. Even association and exposure are two more goals that have been identified. Corporate motives to sponsor individual athletes can be explained by the study with the image of sport.

Motivation level is not constant but varies with organizational changes. During the90th century significant changes such as new organizations and job roles emerged.Because of this there is a need for research on motivation. The purpose of thispaper is to conduct a discussion around what the research results show on multiplemotivation factors impact on an individual's motivation. The purpose has been metthrough literature studies, which in turn has been done through the acquisition ofvarious scientific articles dealing with factors of motivation and their impact onindividuals. This material has then been critically examined and analyzed. Theanalysis of the collected material shows that there is no single answer to when andhow multiple factors of motivation are the most productive for the individual. Theessay has shown that multiple factors of motivation can reinforce each other andhave a positive impact on the individual's performance. At the same time, however, it has also been shown that multiple factors of motivation can workcounterproductive and instead worsen the individual's performance. This can inturn lead to the individual experiencing stress and a deterioration of satisfaction. Amodel has been presented in this paper, highlighting how multiple factors ofmotivation can relate to each other. The model is originated in goal-framingtheory, a theory that describes the image of a painting. In the main frame theindividual positions the main motivating factor. In the background frames isplaced less important factors. How factors in the main frame interact with thefactors in the background frames depends, according to the model, on the situationand the kind of factor that is in the main frame. In some cases there is a successfulcombination of factors, which will enhance motivation. In other situations, theremay be less successful combinations that have a negative effect on the motivationlevel. The conclusion of the essay, therefore, is that there is a need of moreresearch on motivational factors to determine how they interact with each other.

    Abstract [en]

E-commerce is challenging the traditional trade in physical stores. Sales growth in the consumer goods trade has stopped while e-commerce continues to grow. Companies can use customer experience strategies in response to the challenge of remining profitable and avoiding a so-called store death. From a retail perspective, this study investigated how companies use customer experiences in physical stores. The study has identified several customer experience strategies applied by the companies but also why they chose to apply these strategies. It appears that the staff has a significant importance in the store and is likely to be an important factor as to why customers continues to buy their fashion goods in physical stores.

Krav, kontroll & socialt stöd: En kvalitativ studie om omsorgspersonals upplevelser av den psykosociala arbetsmiljön i hemtjänsten2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Distanslärares subjektiva teorier2014Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Second order interactive end user development appropriation in the public sector: Application development using spreadsheet programs2018In: Journal of Organizational and End User Computing, ISSN 1546-2234, E-ISSN 1546-5012, Vol. 30, no 1, p. 82-107Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper seeks to respond to the research question: How does appropriation take place in the public sector in the development of end user applications by civil servants? Appropriation is defined as taking advantage of opportunities related to the development and use of applications, when the developer has in-depth knowledge of the problem domain and is also the primary user of the application. Our results showed that public servants who have deep problem domain knowledge can take advantage of end user tools (e.g. spreadsheet programs) in the problem- solving process to solve vaguely defined problems. Appropriation is manifested in the continuous development of various ICT applications. In this paper, we differentiate between first- and second-order appropriation. First-order appropriation takes place when the potential of the development tool is appropriated by the end user. Second-order appropriation takes place when an application is continuously developed and refined in parallel with the end user’s learning process and the development of organizational requirements.

The qualitative research method approach (qurma): students guide2010Other (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Qualitative methods are commonly used within the area of Electronic Government as well as other fields in social science. Among students carrying out qualitative approaches in their thesis work, qualitative studies are very common but unfortunately there is often a lack of rigor when using qualitative approaches. Method books discussing qualitative studies are frequent, but they often lack some firm advices about how to actually carry out a qualitative study. There are lots of good advices about interviews and observations. Grounded theory is often mentioned although in rather general terms. The interpretive part is not very thoroughly discussed though.

Below we present an outline that might fill the mentioned gap somewhat.

Our aim is to give the student a guide in carrying out the qualitative/interpretive approach. By following the ten steps below, students will not only have to prepare the study, they will also find some solid reference support for the necessary steps in the process of research.

Socratic flipped classroom: What types of questions and tasks promote learning?2016In: Proceedings of the 15th European Conference on e-Learning ECEL 2016 / [ed] Jarmila Novotna & Antonin Jancarik, Reading UK, 2016, p. 41-48Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Socratic questioning stresses the importance of questioning for learning. Flipped Classroom pedagogy generates a need for effective questions and tasks in order to promote active learning. This paper describes a project aimed at finding out how different kinds of questions and tasks support students’ learning in a flipped classroom context. In this study, during the flipped courses, both the questions and tasks were distributed together with video recordings. Answers and solutions were presented and discussed in seminars, with approximately 10 participating students in each seminar. Information Systems students from three flipped classroom courses at three different levels were interviewed in focus groups about their perceptions of how different kinds of questions and tasks supported their learning process. The selected courses were organized differently, with various kinds of questions and tasks. Course one included open questions that were answered and presented at the seminar. Students also solved a task and presented the solution to the group. Course two included open questions and a task. Answers and solutions were discussed at the seminars where students also reviewed each other’s answers and solutions. Course three included online single- and multiple choice questions with real-time feedback. Answers were discussed at the seminar, with the focus on any misconceptions. In this paper we categorized the questions in accordance with Wilson (2016) as factual, convergent, divergent, evaluative, or a combination of these. In all, we found that any comprehensible question that initiates a dialogue, preferably with a set of Socratic questions, is perceived as promoting learning. This is why seminars that allow such questions and discussion are effective. We found no differences between the different kinds of Socratic questions. They were seen to promote learning so long as they made students reflect and problematize the questions. To conclude, we found that questions and tasks promote learning when they are answered and solved in a process that is characterized by comprehensibility, variation, repetition and activity.

Searching reference databases: what students experience and what teachers believe that students experience2010In: Journal of Librarianship and Information Science, ISSN 0961-0006, E-ISSN 1741-6477, Vol. 42, no 4, p. 224-235Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The Internet has made it possible for students to access a vast amount of high quality references when writing papers. Yet research has shown that the use of reference databases is poor and the quality of student papers is consequently often below expectation. The objective of this paper is twofold. First, it aims to describe the problems students experience when they search information using a university reference database. Second it aims to compare the perspective of students on the problems with that of their teachers. As basis for the study we have used the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT) model. A web-based survey was carried out. A total of 150 students at Örebro University in Sweden participated in the survey. The results have been analysed by comparison of median values. Results show that students experience problems mostly in the category of efforts expectancy. Differences between the two groups are most significant in the category of effort expectancy and students’ patience in searching. Teachers are more pessimistic about students’ capacity in information searching than the students themselves.

Modeling and illustrating requirement prioritization in public e-service development from a value-based perspective2015In: Electronic Journal of e-Government, ISSN 1479-439X, E-ISSN 1479-439X, Vol. 13, no 1, p. 1-15Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A major problem in e-service development is the prioritization of the requirements of different stakeholders. The main stakeholders are governments and their citizens, all of whom have different and sometimes conflicting requirements. In this paper, the prioritization problem is addressed by combining a value-based approach with an illustration technique. This paper examines the following research question: How can multiple stakeholder requirements be illustrated from a value-based perspective in order to be prioritizable? We used an e-service development case taken from a Swedish municipality to elaborate on our approach. Our contributions are: 1) a model of the relevant domains for requirement prioritization for government, citizens, technology, finances and laws and regulations; and 2) a requirement fulfillment analysis tool (RFA) that consists of a requirement-goal-value matrix (RGV), and a calculation and illustration module (CIM). The model reduces cognitive load, helps developers to focus on value fulfillment in e-service development and supports them in the formulation of requirements. It also offers an input to public policy makers, should they aim to target values in the design of e-services.
