En dold historia bakom varje ansikte: En vetenskaplig undersökning om hur utsatthet gestaltas i dokumentärfilm2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

He named me Malala (2015), Exodus: Our Journey to Europe (2016) och Min oro (2017) studera hur berättelser om utsatthet skildras i dokumentärfilm.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Robustness in constructing a network of induced emissions based on GPS-tracking data2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The mobility of people, freight and information is fundamental to economic and social activities such as commuting, manufacturing, distributing consumer goods and supplying energy. There are two major problems that arise as a result of mobility. The first is economic cost and the second is environmental impact which is of increasing concern in sustainable development due to emission levels, particularly as a result of car use. This study focuses on constructing a network of induced emissions (NOIEs) by using three models and checking the robustness of NOIEs under varying parameters and models. The three models are Stead’s model, the NAEI model, and Oguchi’s model. This study uses the Swedish city of Borlänge as the case study.

Calculating CO2 emissions by constructing the NOIEs using Stead’s model appears to give an underestimation when compared to results from a NOIEs which applies Oguchi’s model. Results when applying the NAEI model in constructing a NOIEs also give an underestimation compared to a NOIEs applying Oguchi’s model. Applying the NAEI model is, however, more accurate than applying Stead’s model in constructing a NOIEs.

The outcomes of this study show that constructing a NOIEs is robust using Oguchi’s model. This model is preferable since it takes into account more important variables such as driving behavior and the length of the road segments which have a significant impact when estimating CO2 emissions.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis is based on a survey within a global organization. The purpose of the study is to

elucidate and describe an HR department's experience of the psychosocial work environment.

The starting point for this survey is that there are known factors that affect the psychosocial

work environment. Furthermore, the study aimed to motivate the organization to work with

    the psychosocial work environment.

The theory is that these factors are based on assumption that the psychosocial work

environment is affected by excessive workload, lack of control, lack of recognition,

community at work, role conflicts and conflicts of values (Åsberg, Grape, Nygren, Rohde,

Wahlberg, & Währborg, 2010) (Thylefors, 2011). Skills and ability to influence the

workplace are also important factors (Wreder, 2007). Knowledge, communication and good

leadership is therefore the foundation for a viable psychosocial work environment.

The survey is based on a deductive approach, in which participants initially putting a value of

factors through a quantitative survey, for a few weeks later to discuss the factors of

qualitative focus groups. The purpose of the survey was to obtain an anonymous individual

estimation of the experience, while the purpose of the focus groups was to obtain deeper

information about the experience and how employees perceive that the psychosocial work

    environment can be improved.

The results were interpreted based on the theory and several factors had the potential to be

improved. To conduct an adequate work environment, it is important to identify the factors

and work with them in a way that the employees perceive current. Furthermore, it is

important for the organisations to work with the psychosocial working from an organizational

perspective, and not just primarily the individual perspective.

Personlighet och val av utbildning2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Data migration in migration projects have a big chance of failure caused by underestimating the weight and importance of planning for the migration of data between systems. The most common cause of failure is by having inadequate validation. Therefore, knowing what one should be aware of to minimize the risk of data migration will be of help.

This includes steps from David Barkaway for data migration projects about how to gather and retain generated knowledge for future projects. This also includes steps of how to perform data migration and avoid common causes of failure.

Based on the collected theory, interview questions will be written that enables me to create criteria a list of criteria for evaluating tools for data migration.

In this study I have chosen two different tools to evaluate. I will interview four IT-consultants with experience of data migration to best answer which criteria these tools should fulfill to be of interest for these four IT-consultants.

    These tools are:

    1. SQL-Server Integrated Services: A service from Microsoft within the .Net-environment for datamigration och Business Intelligence.

    2. Talend Open Studio for Data Integration: A product from Talend made in java and is open-source, used for data migration.

The result shows that Talend fulfills more of the criteria than SSIS does.

The difference in usage of first-person pronouns Between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study has been looking for any differences in the use of first-person

pronouns between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, and it has also tried to

clarify whether Hillary Clinton uses I-words more frequently than we-words.

The data has been gathered from pre-election speeches, and frequencies,

rankings and referent categories have been analyzed. The study has found that

there are some differences in the use of first-person pronouns between Hillary

Clinton and Bernie Sanders. The singular pronouns show us how they choose to

present themselves to the voter. The plural pronouns show us which referent

categories, or ingroups, the candidates identify themselves with, and if there are

any signs of what Billig calls Banal Nationalism (1995) in their speeches.

Overall, the results show that Hillary Clinton uses I-words and we-words more

frequently than Bernie Sanders does, but opposite to what some online news

sites have suggested, this study show that her frequencies of we-words are

higher than her frequencies of I-words.

Lexical and morphosyntactic features of a lexically driven in-group code2017In: Journal of Pidgin and Creole languages ( Print), ISSN 0920-9034, E-ISSN 1569-9870, Vol. 32, no 1, p. 75-103Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The present paper focuses on the speech of a rural Afro-Brazilian community called Cafundó, situated 150 km from São Paulo. In 1978, when linguistic data were collected, the community constituted approximately eighty individuals, descendants of two slave women who inherited their owners’ proprieties. According to earlier studies, when the inhabitants of Cafundó spoke in their supposed ‘African language,’ Cupópia, they used structures borrowed from Portuguese and a vocabulary of possible African origin. A lexical analysis shows that the etymologies match historical and demographical data, indicating that speakers of varieties of Kimbundu, Kikongo and Umbundu dominated in the community. Through a morphosyntactic analysis, specific features were found in the data, such as copula absence and variable agreement patterns. By showing that some of Cupópia’s specific grammatical features are not derived from the Portuguese spoken by the same speakers but are instead shared with more restructured varieties, this paper defends the hypothesis that this lexically driven in-group code is not simply a regional variety of Portuguese with a number of African-derived words.

    Abstract [sv]

Estimation and interpretation of genetic effects with epistasis using the NOIA model2012In: Quantitative trait loci (QTL): Methods and Protocols / [ed] Scott A. Rifkin, Humana Press, 2012, p. 191-204Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

We introduce this communication with a brief outline of the historical landmarks in genetic modeling, especially concerning epistasis. Then, we present methods for the use of genetic modeling in QTL analyses. In particular, we summarize the essential expressions of the natural and orthogonal interactions (NOIA) model of genetic effects. Our motivation for reviewing that theory here is twofold. First, this review presents a digest of the expressions for the application of the NOIA model, which are often mixed with intermediate and additional formulae in the original articles. Second, we make the required theory handy for the reader to relate the genetic concepts to the particular mathematical expressions underlying them. We illustrate those relations by providing graphical interpretations and a diagram summarizing the key features for applying genetic modeling with epistasis in comprehensive QTL analyses. Finally, we briefly review some examples of the application of NOIA to real data and the way it improves the interpretability of the results.

    Abstract [en]

Title. Gender disparities in healthcare encounters: A literature review.

Aim. This essay investigates what impact the sex of patients and nurses has in

    healthcare encounters.

Background. That sex and gender norms have an impact on encounters,

communication and clinical decision making is known from previous research. But

no research has been made that gives an overview of how this affects healthcare

encounters. Investigating this is important to bring awareness of what impact this

    has on the patient.

Method. This essay was conducted as a literature review.

Findings. Five qualitative studies and five quantitative studies that investigated

different aspects of healthcare encounters from a gender perspective were chosen

and analyzed. The analysis resulted in five main themes that each reflect different

aspects of healthcare encounters. Among other things, factors that may limit

female patients’ autonomy were identified and that the nurses’ gender may be a

deciding factor in whether the patients are given opportunity to talk about their

    feelings.

Conclusion. The result suggests that patients’ and nurses’ gender has an impact in

healthcare encounters. In some areas the difference was more pronounced than in

others, for example when it comes to talking about emotions, moral support in

dialogues and opportunity for patients to be listened to.

    Abstract [en]

This article aims to illuminate certain cultural aspects of the work of an evening newspaper (working style, ways of thinking, assumptions about the business, its objectives, perceptions of the readership) as well as how communication in group situations contributes to the social construction of organizations in terms of objectives, meaning and style. The paper will also address the issues of play, emotions and pleasure on work. It is argued that a situational focus, when studying organizations and other social phenomena, provides a less constrained understanding of the object than predominant systemic approaches. The situation, as studied and discussed here, is a monthly meeting between managers and news bill editors of an evening newspaper where sales and the content of news bills are evaluated. It is concluded that, while the premise for the meeting (the casual relation between sales and news bill layout) guides the conversation, the meeting primarily operates as an emotional arena where excitement and pleasure are produced under game-like circumstances. This allows the participants to address, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, questions such as:

Who are we? How do we look upon ourselves? Who are our customers? What ’needs’ shall we satisify? What is important and good? What is central? How do we work? How do we think about certain things?

While some answers are provided and reinforced, the main outcome of the meeting is the possibility, however restricted, to pose these questions and play with them. Thus, the participants manage to establish a zone with considerable degrees of freedom; free from committments but not free from remainders of who they are or ought to be.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

ungdomspsykiatrin inom heldygnsvård deltog i studien.

centrala i omvårdnaden.

    Abstract [en]

Isakssons AB is the manufacturer of custom-designed products and efficient solutions in stainless steel, constructional metalwork and environmental technology. The company is currently going through an expansion phase, which leads to greater requirements for the production. In order to cope with this expansion, they have chosen to rebuild their premises, and these changes must be adapted for the production to enable further growth for the company.  The purpose of this study is to give improvement proposals to a more effective production process at a manufacturing company with varying products. In order to create understanding for the process, flowcharts, process mapping’s and time studies have been executed. By performing a zero state analysis, improvement opportunities have been discovered, and changes have been proposed from these.  The results from the frequency studies show that the operators spend a lot of time on work that is non valuable for the product. By creating more workstations for manufacturing and introducing visual workplace aids, these non valuable activities can be reduced. Furthermore, the re-locating of machines and inventory have been suggested, in order to create an easier flow through the premises.

När kapitalet färgar radiovågorna: Hur reklamfinansieringen avspeglar sig i programinnehållet i kommersiell radio2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Understanding Rural Change: Demography as a key to the future2007In: Futures: The journal of policy, planning and futures studies, ISSN 0016-3287, E-ISSN 1873-6378, Vol. 39, no 4, p. 363-379Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The last decades have seen a rapidly growing interest in foresight methodology. Methods have been developed in corporate and governmental communication exercises often labelled technology foresight. In reality, these foresights have often drifted into processes of social change, since technological change is hard to foresee beyond what is already in the pipe-line. Forecasting of social change, however, must be based on solid knowledge about the mechanisms of continuity and change. Virtually nothing can be said about the future without relating to the past; foresights and futures studies are about revealing the hidden pulse of history. Hence, the answer to forecasting the future is empirical research within the social sciences. Demographic change has been recognised as a key determinant for explaining social change. Population changes are fairly predictable and the age transition can explain a wide range of socio-economic changes. For rural futures, demographic change is a key issue, since age structure in rural areas is often uneven and also unstable due to migration patterns. A number of policy related questions as well as research challenges are raised as a consequence.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

The compensatory style of Feedback on Japanese Inter Relay Chat2011In: Georgetown University Round Table on Languages and Linguistics (GURT) 2011, Georgetown, Washington DC, 2011Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Feedback(FB) has been defined as the 3rd move in the interactional exchange of the Initiation-Response-Follow up structure(Coulthard et al.,1975). In Japanese , it was also defined as a response or reaction to previous statements made by other participants (Takamor, 2004). On the basis of such definisions, the formula and function of FB has also been analyzed. On the other hand, Inter Relay Chat (IRC) is considred as a relativily "Lean" Medium as IRC, based on the data that comprises 5574 utterances taken from "Yahoo Japan" chat rooms. Qualitative analysis clarified that emoticons, the hedge in a form of the alphabet "w", and the verbal play and rhyme can be considred as the unique aspects of IRC in Japanese.

The difference of conceptualization in the Japanese and American occupational meeting - Through examining the pragmatic usage of discourse marker “Oh” and “Att”2012Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The pragmatic usage of each Discourse markers has been analyzed on its pragmaticand semantic meaning on various contexts.  Some research seeks for clarifying only the major usage for the purpose of languagelearning, such as the usage in dictionary. At the other hand, some claims Pragmaticmarkers have a number of different functions depending on the context, questioningwhether they have one meaning or many meanings.  According to Schiffrin (1987), there are two types of discourse markers in Americandiscourse. One of those is the semantic-relevant usage, which focuses on the logicalaspect of markers, such as”because”, “so” or “but”. The other one is the markers suchas “well” or “oh”, which are relatively supposed not to be logical and rather their mainfocus is on the emotional or turn-management effect.  Especially as for the discourse marker “oh”, though it belong to the latter type,Schiffrin (1987) notifies all of 6 main usages from pragmatic (strong emotional state)to semantic are based on the information management task, regardless of detailedclassification inside it.  Except the usage of each marker, this research also focuses on the perspective of“genre discourse analysis”, as a scale to examine discourse markers. Genre is aperspective to analyse discourse, and the definition of which is suggested by Bensonand Greaves (1981), as “the type of activity in which the discourse operates its content, idea and institutional focus”.  This research sets the “occupational meeting “on Japanese and American as the typeof activity, and aims to find the difference of “concept of meeting” and thus “theconceptualisation of Japanese politeness reflected in the “wakimae” principle, byinvesting the pragmatic usage of “oh” American and Japanese speakers choose. As the methodology, based on 500 turns from the speech setting of “meeting” and“casual conversation” on both of American and Japanese corpus, the marker to show“surprise” are extracted respectively and further divided to 6 usage along theSchiffrin’s categorization and then cross-examined.  Consequently the result is found as next:1. “Strong emotional state” such as showing the surprise or fear, the most pragmaticusage is frequently found in American corpus and the frequency doesn’t showany difference when the setting changed from the casual conversation to themeeting. Whereas it was rare to find same usage in Japanese especially inmeeting.2. The most pragmatic usage, which just collocates with feedback to answer, isfound frequently in Japanese especially in the meeting.3. The usage that focus on information management aspect as “repair” or “requestof clarification” increase in American meeting, compared to that in casualconversation, In contrast, the opposite tendency is found in Japanese counterparts.  In conclusion, negotiations of debating aspect are mainly cantered in Americanmeetings, in which the exchanges of the difference in information they have obtainedare focused. However in Japanese, the main issue are replaced by wakimae(discretion),which require the participants to choose certain formality of the conversational settings.

Turn the technique in Visual arts into literature: Dramatic effect in Akutagawa works and the management of tense2013In: / [ed] Takahashi Tatsuo, International Society for Akutagawa Ryūnosuke Studies , 2013, , p. 19Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The works of Akugatawa has been evaluated to connote the Drama-like expressiveness, which enables readers to perceive his works as if they are watching the visual arts as film or play.

Elaine (1997) analyse those characteristic of Akutagawa works, and suggested the resemblance of it with the technique called as "Montage (Eisenstein, cited in Aumont, 1987)"used in some Visual Arts. Accordinng to Einstein, this technique is the "juxtaposition of two fragments resembles their product more than it does their sum", in which each scene is carefully framed and accumulated one after another, as if it is Kaleidoscope.

In this research, those carefully accumulated scenes and its shifts are focused on, and how two elements, the narration by the protagonist’s view and the description of what happens are structured in each novel are examined. As well, the relevance of the shifts of scenes and how "tense" as syntactic element are differently managed are also subjects to be examined, based on his two works "Toshisyun" and "Torokko".

To look into the usage of tense in "Toshisyun", "-ta form (past tense)" is used in the dialogue at the opening part as narration, in other hands, "-ru form (present tense)" is shown in the descriptive part.

Same tendency is also shown in "Torokko". "-ta form (past tense)" is used the monologue by protagonist at the opening part, however the "-ru form (present tense) "is used in the descriptive part, which is actually considered to precede the narrative part chronologically.

One reason of these contradicted usages of tense could due to the expressional effect of present form in Japanese. Maynard (2005) implies the descriptive effect of present tense as the vividness that gives readers the sensation of chronological and physical closeness to the event shown in the narrative.

These two works also shows the structural equivalence; In addition to the usage of tense in the monologue or dialogue part in opening, "-ta form (past tense)" is also used in the closing part. This structural accordance of tense makes readers to refrain a scene, which has already been submitted. Ricio (2007) suggested the same technique in films as "flash forward". Thus management of tense in Akutagawa could realize the expressional means in visual arts in the literature, and it could be one element of Drama -characteristic in his works.

    Abstract [en]

This article examines gender differences and style-shifting of women in turn-taking (TT) strategies during Japanese conversations; such strategies appear when there is a new shift in conversation. Specifically, the article explores the gender difference in TT strategies and whether a woman’s TT strategy changes in accordance with the interlocutor’s gender. This article suggests that women have varying conversational styles that are rather similar to those of men. The following tendencies were observed in the TT strategies of men and women. First, in the TT strategies adopted toward male interlocutors, females exhibited supportive tendencies, such as involving men in the conversation or actively responding to them. Second, the TT strategies adopted by males toward female interlocutors revealed negative elements such as the use of blunt responsive markers or first person pronouns. Third, in the TT strategies adopted toward female interlocutors, females displayed relatively negative tendencies, using blunt or simple TT strategies in comparison to those seen in the conversations between males and females. The article then discusses the implications of these findings as women do not innately possess supportive conversational styles and simply converse in accordance with their gender role. In particular, the discussion focuses on the possibility that the socialization of women also compels them to follow linguistic socialization, which reflects a woman’s customary role to engage in assistant work.

Turn-Taking Strategy in Japanese CMC2009In: Studies in Language and Cultures, ISSN 1341-0032, Vol. 24, p. 47-64Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [un]

IRC (Inter Relay Chat) falls under the form of media called CMC (Computer-mediated communication); however, this form of media lacks such features as co-presence and simultaneity (Lark and Brennan, 1991). Therefore, CMC is said to be a limited form of media, compared to face-to-face communication (King, 1996). With regard to CMC, studies on turn-taking systems have been examined in the Western context. Hence, in this paper, I would like to argue that, to some extent, Japanese CMC has its own turn-taking system. One of the unique characteristics of the Japanese turn-taking system is the coconstruction of turns by more than two participants, in which one of the participants utters only the former part of the statement, anticipating that the latter part will be completed by the other participants (Mizutani, 1993). In Japanese, co-construction is possible partly because of the language's syntactic structures, in which syllables can easily be attached one after the other. This type of construction is called turn-projectability and the individual part of a sentence is called TCU (Turn Construction Unit; Szatrowski, 1993). Focusing on TCU, this paper studies how a turn is taken and examines how turn-taking in IRC is different from that in face-to face communication. On the basis of 3000 turns extracted from the IRC of “Yahoo Japan,” I first counted the frequency of turn-taking strategy by initiations, such as connectives, fillers, and responsive markers as discourse markers, and then compared it with the frequency of turn-taking strategy found in face-to-face communication. Consequently, it was clarified that the initiations in CMC are not as frequent as they are in face-to-face conversation. A further observation of the data showed that TCU tends to appear instead of initiation. Through a qualitative analysis of each TCU, it can be said that primer turn, which ends in the topical marker “wa,” draws a response from other participants in the cyber community and makes the community livelier. Furthermore, in the case of a narrative, a participant connects each turn by using the conjunctive suffix “-te,” in order to draw the other's response to the story, thus contributing to the vividness of communication in cyber space. In conclusion, TCU effectively compensates for the leanness of CMC, and the various TCU can be unique and powerful tools for turn-taking strategy in Japanese CMC.
