Den visuella kompositionens praxis: En kvantitativ studie om den visuella kompositionens orientering och inramning2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to shed light on the view of consumption patterns in course litterature of home economics. The material consists of three books distributed in 1958, 1995 and 2016 to show how consumers are created at different times in history. This is done by using a combination of discourse analysis and semiotic-didactic analysis and shows that the view on consumption have shifted over the years. In 1958 it was important to be a thrifty consumer for the sake of society, in 1995 it was more important to pay attention to the enviroment and get the paycheck to last all month and in 2016 it was even more important to take the environment in to account when consuming and be aware of all the individual needs, that might not be possible to fullfill, in the household.

Kyrkorum och status: En studie om bänkplacering i 1700-talets Falun2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Ju längre bak i kyrkan man satt desto lägre social status hade man.

Challenging tradition: Teaching English in Sweden without the influence of National Testing2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

When the Swedish school system met with the novel experience of cancelled the annual national tests in spring 2020, teachers across the country were forced to adapt to teaching without this traditional support. Due to English being one of the subjects required to administer national tests, upper secondary school English teachers were immediately affected. By looking at several studies regarding standardised testing in general, and Swedish national test tradition specifically, this qualitative study summarises how large-scale assessment in education affects teaching.Through semi-structured interviews with three English teachers, this study surveyed how teaching was affected by the cancellation of the national tests in Sweden. The teachers’ experiences of teaching without the supportive function of the national tests were also documented. The recorded interviews were analysed through the theoretical framework of reactivity, and specifically, Campbell’s Law. This study’s findings are that while the national tests hold a critical support function for teachers, they may also inhibit English teachers from teaching what is specified in the English curriculum. What emerged from the collected data and subsequent analysis was teachers’ fractured role as dependent on performance standards-based on test criteria rather than the content standards in the English curriculum. The interviewed teachers showed a great deal of trust in the national tests as grounds for assessing their students’ English skills, occasionally at the cost of their faith in themselves as teachers. Counterproductively, this resulted in teachers, consciously or not, adapting their teaching practices to fit the predicted national test rather than the curriculum. Essentially, teachers had changed their behaviour to accommodate an observer, as theorized by Campbell. During the 2020 spring semester when national tests were cancelled in Sweden, and English teachers all over the nation had to make do without their supporting function, this was made clear.

    Abstract [en]

Effectiveness of second language education in Sweden has been debated in the media and among lawmakers as well as within several fields of research, but few of the participants have had opportunity to comment on the matter. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine and clarify the views of some Swedish second language learners on how the educational system is meeting curriculum goals regarding possibilities to take part in work and community settings. Five learners of Swedish as a second language underwent a semi-structured interview, while five other second language learners participated in a survey on the same topic. The collected materials are then grouped and presented by theme and discussed. The results suggest that while second language learners of Swedish appreciate the opportunity to take part in the education because it gave them a way into other school subjects, they also feel that the course organization and content has not been the springboard into social and career settings prescribed in the syllabus.

    Abstract [sv]

Coaching i vineyardrörelsen: Att ställa de rätta frågorna2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 5 credits / 7,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The goal of this essay is to study how the author Abdellah Taïa portrays homosexuality and class differences in the Moroccan society in his two works L’Armée du Salut (2006) and Le Jour du Roi (2010). The method used in the essay is hermeneutics, which makes it possible to use personal interpretations of the texts for the analysis. The studied texts reveal the difficulties of living in a religious society where homosexuality is condemned as well as forbidden by law and where a person’s future is dependent on his or her social status.

Neutral or not?: A study of gender (in)equality in the use of professional terms in English.2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Jenny Cheshire, current editor in chief of

Language in Society, stated that there is a bias of masculine terms and referents in the English language (1985, p. 22). This poses a problem, both linguistically and socially, and conscious language reforms need to be imposed in order for the bias to drastically be countered (1985, p. 22). In the past decades, gender-neutral terms, such as chairperson has been gaining ground in English, particularly in business discourse, and are contributing to create a more gender-neutral language. According to Cheshire (2008), media discourse is enormously influential (p.9) in the way we communicate, and this study investigates patterns in the use of chairperson and salesperson, as well as historically male professions priest and manager and female professions nurse and secretary. The data for this study is taken from the TIME Magazine Corpus. The results of this study show that masculine gender collocates appear commonly with the historically female professions and conversely for the historically male professions which appear more often with feminine collocates. Furthermore, through analysis of 1,000 instances of the terms in the corpus, it is noted that there are differences as to how the professions are connected with other words as well. Sexuality, nationality and physicality are ways in which the collocates of the terms differ. It is noted that, over time, there have been both increases and decreases in how gender collocates appear with the terms and that the frequency in usage of the feminine, masculine and gender-neutral terms have all been noted to vary in usage over the past century in the selected discourse.

Bingsjö360 – Experience Sweden's Bingsjö Folk Music Festival in 360 degrees2019Artistic output (Unrefereed)
    Abstract [en]

Every first Wednesday in July since 1969, Bingsjöstämman (Bingsjö Folk Music Festival) beckons leading folk musicians and folk music enthusiasts from all over Scandinavia to the picturesque village of Bingsjö in Sweden. Over the course of 24 hours, thousands of people gather in fields, barns, campgrounds and historic houses to enjoy scheduled concerts, impromptu musical performances and to participate in traditional dances.

Captured at Bingsjöstämman in 2018, Bingsjö360 presents 18 separate video clips which combine 8K resolution VR360 video and ambisonic music recordings to represent the broad range of musical performances on display at the festival. Through this immersive music documentary experience, viewers around the world can experience the sounds, rhythms and unique visual beauty of the festival for themselves.

Bingsjö360 presents new creative pathways for representing and sharing folk music tradition through cutting-edge artistic research, immersive audiovisual technology and new modes of audience interaction. By making Bingsjö360 easily accessible through an online video sharing platform, this project also aims to elevate knowledge and perception about immersive audiovisual experiences in wider society.

This international artistic research project was instigated at Dalarna Audiovisual Academy at Dalarna University (Falun, Sweden) and produced in collaboration with Folkmusikens Hus, Faraway Productions (Australia), Honeypot Film Productions, Cutting Edge (Australia), Dalarnas Museum, Film i Dalarna and Benny Andersson’s record label Mono Music.

Jill Bilcock: Dancing the Invisible2017Artistic output (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Jill Bilcock: Dancing the Invisible is a feature documentary film about the life and work of one of the world’s leading film artists, Academy Award–nominated film editor Jill Bilcock ACE, ASE. It is the first-ever biographical documentary film about a film editor.

Iconic Australian films Strictly Ballroom, Muriel’s Wedding, Moulin Rouge!, Red Dog and The Dressmaker bear the unmistakeable look and sensibility of Bilcock’s visual inventiveness, but it was her brave editing choices in Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet that changed the look of cinema the world over, inspiring one Hollywood critic to dub her editing style as that of a “Russian serial killer on crack”.

With a back-story as colourful and surprising as her films, and featuring commentary from Cate Blanchett, Baz Luhrmann, Jocelyn Moorhouse, Shekhar Kapur, Phillip Noyce and Fred Schepisi, this documentary is a wonderful insight into the art of editing and the profound impact it has on storytelling.

Jill Bilcock is one of the world’s leading film editors, yet to most people she remains relatively unknown.

Few filmmakers in Australia have left such an indelible impression on the nation's screen culture and filmmaking community as Jill. Over the past three decades, her intricate sculpting of stories and support of emerging filmmakers, have resulted in an astounding output of ‘evergreen’ films, cherished by people not only in Australia but across the world.

With unique access to Jill’s past and present, Jill Bilcock: The Art of Film Editing presents a rich and visual portrait of an artist that operates on many levels, and provides a rare a chance to appreciate and decode a central, yet largely misunderstood part of the filmmaking process.

Waltz after Werkmästers Hans Olsson with dancer Dlsher Jabo and Bullermyren Band2018Artistic output (Unrefereed)
    Abstract [en]

This multimodal and interdisciplinary artistic research project fuses Kurdish-Swedish dancer Dlsher Jabo’s embodied interpretation of a traditional Swedish folk tune with experimental documentary and music video filmmaking practices.

Filmed in the historic village of Bingsjö in Dalarna Province, Sweden, the project re-imagines the contemporary refugee experience by engaging in several layers of audiovisual and intercultural collaboration.

Prior to production, the traditional song Waltz after Werkmästers Hans Olsson was recorded and re-arranged by Swedish-Kurdish folk band Bullermyren. Audio interviews were conducted with dancer Dlsher Jabo, in which he shared stories of his life as krump/street dancer in Syria and his subsequent displacement as a refugee.

During principal photography, a Swedish folk dance troupe, led by choreographer Jenny Franke, was invited to perform alongside Mr Jabo and Bullermyren, resulting in a unique juxtaposition of traditional and contemporary dance styles.

Due to the extreme physical nature of Mr Jabo’s performance and the limited availability of the filming location, the shoot was conducted in a highly improvised manner in a barn dance hall. Consequently, the film’s narrative structure and visual rhythm needed to be composed through judicious and precise film editing practice.

This film project was presented at the 2018 MIRAC Conference at Sweden’s Royal College of Music and disseminated at a 2018 audiovisual research seminar at Dalarna University before being made widely available on YouTube.

The research was conducted as part of Dalarna University’s research initiative DAVA intercultural sessions and produced in collaboration with Faraway Productions Pty Ltd (Australia), Bingsjöstämman and Folkmusikens Hus.
