A photographic journey through Vietnam2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

This degree project consists of “A photographic journey through Vietnam”. One month was spent in Vietnam where the different aspects of the Vietnamese life were documented in images. The journey began in Hanoi and descended down the country to Ho Chi Minh City. The report describes the compositional elements of photography and makes an attempt to describe what a “good” image is. Furthermore it explains what equipment that is necessary for such a journey and how you can interact with the local population. When the journey came to an end, a photographic book consisting of 200 images was created. The report details the used workflow step by step. Finally the author has commented 20 of the selected images regarding their photographic composition.

Formgivning av magasin i ett redaktionellt utvecklingsarbete2003Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Tidningskompaniet, a publishing agency in Göteborg, has during the spring of 2003 developed a customer magazine for Göteborgsvarvet, a Half Marathon Race in Göteborg. If realized the magazine shall be distributed to former participants of the race twice a year and will be financed by adverts. As part of the editorial concept, development of a graphic profile will be made for the magazine. This degree project will result in the production of a »dummy« magazine to be presented to the client and to be used by the advertisement sales people in their work. The magazine, named »Varvet«, will convey the message that anyone can run Göteborgsvarvet. The intention is to give the magazine a »youthful and sporty« image. The work in this degree project has comprised designing the magazine in co-operation with an editorial concept developer and a project leader at Tidningskompaniet, and also the production of 18 magazine pages including prepress work. The magazine has been made into a strictly sectionized product, with a mix of short and long articles with lighter material and strict how-to-do-it guides. The design has been made to complement the editorial concept, with typography and colours that feel modern and »active«. The dummy magazine has been digitally printed using a Xeikon digital press and has been distributed to the client and the advertisement sales bureau.

Study of ink mileage and print through2002Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

This report contains a study of ink mileage, show through and other mechanisms that are important in the study of substrate printability. These mechanisms have an impact on how ink will react on paper. To develop a substrate that provides good ink mileage and less show through requires a closer study of substrate characteristics. Substrates with different characteristics have been tested by a technique developed for this project called modified ink mileage. Ink mileage is a method to determine how much ink that is required for a certain target density. Further tests on the same substrates have been done including print through and surface roughness measurements.

    Abstract [sv]

The purpose of this thesis was to create a visual identity to the café Trädgårdscafét. This was to increase the awareness of the cafe among the population of Borlänge. To make the company's visual identity visible, we also organized a guerrilla marketing. The outcome of the guerrilla marketing were then measured by calculating the number of guests during a certain period of time and also through a survey conducted in Borlänge. Graphic material, such as a graphic identity, business cards, feel good-cards, store signs, standing information folders to place on the tables and pavement board was created. Flyers and posters were also created for the guerrilla marketing. The basis for this was established in the study of literature, focus groups and surveys. We also kept a regular and open contact with the café owners throughout the project. In a similar procedure a broad knowledge about guerrilla marketing was gathered in order to be able to arrange one our selves. The guerrilla marketing was held for one day in the city of Borlänge. To attract attention, groups of outdoor furniture, decorated with green plants, were placed at different locations, while six marketers handed out flyers and spread information about the café. The guerrilla marketing resulted in that the café's customers grew by nearly twice as many on the day of the guerrilla. Surveys made before and after the guerrilla showed that the awareness of the café grew.

    Abstract [sv]

The print- and mailroom at Gefle Dagblad (GD-tyck) is handling an increasing amount of commercial jobs along with the newspaper production. Investments have above all been done in the mailroom to be able to offer commercial costumers a higher degree of finishing and there are plans to expand further in the commercial market. GD-tryck is of the opinion that they need to secure the quality of their production to be able to do such expansion, which is the reason why a quality system of some kind may be appropriate. However there are no plans to certify such a quality system according to ISO 9001:2000. In this exam report the present methods of working have been analysed from a quality perspective. Suggestions on how GD-tryck should be working with quality development is presented in the fields where shortage of quality has been discovered. The suggestions taken together do not form a quality system but can be looked at as ideas of approach to quality fields that have to be developed if a working quality system shall be accomplished. Many of the quality fields that have been discussed do not have anything to do with technical quality directly but are in some degree requirements for a working quality system. It also feels urgent to illustrate these fields in this exam report when most people at GD seems to place quality as identical with technical quality. Technical quality is also a quality field where GD-tryck has few concrete problems today and they already produce printed matters of a high quality. Afact that might make it difficult to adopt a quality system as the benefits of such a system is not obvious.

    Abstract [sv]

Through interviews, a questionnaire survey and an indepth analysis of the Swedish magazines Veckorevyn and Magazine Café has a number of parameters been made visible. It was difficult to obtain an unambiguous result when the journal's target audience is crucial for the cover design. Nevertheless, we can generally say that the transparent varnish of covers, PMS colors and enclosing the journal in plastic do not increase the attention value, as this occurs in many magazines. Due to today's tough competition among journals, we believe that they will need to niche themselves much harder to survive. We also believe that the new, big trend is that more covers will become more plain and stylistically pure, with one big communicating image and fewer coverlines, as many covers were designed during the 1940s.

Print quality study of a laboratory offset press2004Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

PAPRO operates within the Forest Research company and their mission is to develop value-adding industry solutions. At present there are no good ways for mills to easily test the printing quality on newsprint paper. There is a great need for a fast way to do this on different paper qualities; with a laboratory- offset press this can be both a time and money saving method. At PAPRO Forest Research, New Zealand, a laboratory offset press has been developed and designed, during the past seven years, concerning this issue. Earlier projects were made concerning the press, e.g. to establish the optimal settings. The mission with this project was to partly determine the present variability of the print quality and to evaluate if the fountain solution, distilled water and 2% Diol green concentrate, used at the moment mixed with different percentages of Isopropanol could decrease the variability and contribute to more stabile results. Throughout the whole project the print quality showed a high variation and was even more variable when the Isopropanol was added. All in all 50 print rounds times twelve printed paper strips was carried out through the project divided into three parts. To analyse the print quality, a microscope with an image capture camera has been used. Data from the taken images was analysed and inserted into charts to see the variations. The conclusions of the whole project are not satisfying because no final evaluations were possible to make. Main conclusions are that the additive of Isopropanol to the ordinary fountain solution, used at present, only contributed to more unstable results of the print quality. And it seems to be difficult to get some stable results from the lab press as long as the room where it is placed is not fully conditioned as required for the process of offset printing. And the fact that the airbrush which applies the amount of fountain solution is also variable, as shown in earlier projects, which contributes to unstable results as well. For further work more exact parameters as a conditioned room are required and the possibility to further design the laboratory press to use waterless offset printing instead.

Printing colour hard proofs using EFI Colorproof XF v. 3.1 and Photoshop CS3, and production substrates.2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

EFI Colorproof XF was found to be more convenient from a user’s aspect, and had features which are covered in the ISO 12647-7 standard (e.g. the ability to simulate screening and print margin information), which Photoshop CS3 lacked. None of the proofing systems distinguished itself in a clear way from the other; sometimes, on certain substrates, Photoshop CS3 produced most accurate colours, sometimes EFI Colorproof XF did. Further investigations need to be carried out to tell more exactly which system produce most accurate colours. Only 6 out of 34 simulation-combinations had colours within the tolerances in the standard. The result also shows that the production substrates should not be used as proofing substrates. Instead the proofing papers especially made for ink jet should be used to obtain more colour-accurate prints.

Power Management Controls2002Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

In an office building in the US the office equipment uses about 7% of the total electricity use. Even though this is a low number, there is still a reason to save more energy, especially since one third of the energy savings are lost when power management is not enabled. The core in the project ”Power Management Controls” is to develop a voluntary standard, The User Interface Standard, that manufacturers of office equipment can use as a reference when they develop new equipment and design new interfaces. The interface is an important part of the use of power management and doing this should increase the use of power management and save more energy. The interfaces are ofter hidden or inconsistent and confusing, which makes it harder for the user to understand power management. A more consistent interface makes it easier for the user to understand the meaning of an interface and power management itself The standard consists of six different parts, which describe what can be done to achieve a consistent interface. The standard also describes the part of the project called Dynamic Behavior. This part is concentrating on the interfaces and the behavior of the device over time, which is important for the user to understand. The purpose of this degree project is to study and participate in the project ”Power Management Controls”, and to understand what is being done to save more energy.

The value of a saved tree: The lifecycle of CO2-emissions associated with the combination of printing paper and electricity production of wood in the U.S. and Sweden2004Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The pulp- and paper production is a very energy intensive industry sector. Both Sweden and the U.S. are major pulpand paper producers. This report examines the energy and the CO2-emission connected with the pulp- and paper industry for the two countries from a lifecycle perspective. New technologies make it possible to increase the electricity production in the integrated pulp- and paper mill through black liquor gasification and a combined cycle (BLGCC). That way, the mill can produce excess electricity, which can be sold and replace electricity produced in power plants. In this process the by-products that are formed at the pulp-making process is used as fuel to produce electricity. In pulp- and paper mills today the technology for generating energy from the by-product in a Tomlinson boiler is not as efficient as it could be compared to the BLGCC technology. Scenarios have been designed to investigate the results from using the BLGCC technique using a life cycle analysis. Two scenarios are being represented by a 1994 mill in the U.S. and a 1994 mill in Sweden. The scenarios are based on the average energy intensity of pulp- and paper mills as operating in 1994 in the U.S. and Sweden respectively. The two other scenarios are constituted by a »reference mill« in the U.S. and Sweden using state-of-the-art technology. We investigate the impact of varying recycling rates and total energy use and CO2-emissions from the production of printing and writing paper. To economize with the wood and that way save trees, we can use the trees that are replaced by recycling in a biomass gasification combined cycle (BIGCC) to produce electricity in a power station. This produces extra electricity with a lower CO2 intensity than electricity generated by, for example, coal-fired power plants. The lifecycle analysis in this thesis also includes the use of waste treatment in the paper lifecycle. Both Sweden and the U.S. are countries that recycle paper. Still there is a lot of paper waste, this paper is a part of the countries municipal solid waste (MSW). A lot of the MSW is landfilled, but parts of it are incinerated to extract electricity. The thesis has designed special scenarios for the use of MSW in the lifecycle analysis. This report is studying and comparing two different countries and two different efficiencies on the BLGCC in four different scenarios. This gives a wide survey and points to essential parameters to specifically reflect on, when making assumptions in a lifecycle analysis. The report shows that there are three key parameters that have to be carefully considered when making a lifecycle analysis of wood in an energy and CO2-emission perspective in the pulp- and paper mill in the U.S. and in Sweden. First, there is the energy efficiency in the pulp- and paper mill, then the efficiency of the BLGCC and last the CO2 intensity of the electricity displaced by BIGCC or BLGCC generated electricity. It also show that with the current technology that we have today, it is possible to produce CO2 free paper with a waste paper amount up to 30%. The thesis discusses the system boundaries and the assumptions. Further and more detailed research, including amongst others the system boundaries and forestry, is recommended for more specific answers.

Grafisk profil för House of Sweden (Washington D.C.)2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Redesign av Vagabonds guideboksserie The travelguides of Vagabond - Redesign2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Todays travel trends go towards independence and self planning. If you need advice or help when performing your trip, there are several different series of guidebooks on the market and one of these series comes from the travel magazine Vagabond. This degree project concerns the redesigning of the travelguides of Vagabond, or to be precise: their cityguide over Istanbul. The purpose of the new design is to assure the resemblance between the guidebook and the magazine, as wanted by the Art Director of Vagabond Angelica Zander. Prior to the redesigning process preliminary studies that make up the fundamental ideas were made. Three other big titles of guidebooks on the market were analyzed, and in addition a great deal of focus – considering the final purpose – was put on the concept of magazine design. Some color psychology has also been studied to make out what a difference color makes in printed media and what power color can contribute with, when delivering the message. Finally redesign as a concept has been investigated to clarify why the way of expression should be renewed from time to time. The result is presented as spread examples from the cityguide over Istanbul. The new design is applied on the existing content and the result is supposed to appear as a miniature magazine.

    Abstract [sv]

(PDF1 - Rapport) (PDF2 - Bilagor) (PDF3 - Grafisk Manual)

Studie av web to print samt kartläggning av kunders behov för tillämpning av systemet CiPublisher2003Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Customers put their printing suppliers to severe claims for shorter production time and faster deliveries. Printers always look for new solutions to increase the satisfaction of their customers. One example of such a solution is web to print, where the customers book their printed matters at Internet. The solution involves design of printed matter by using templates that are made unique for the customer's printed matter. Web to print is suitable for reiterated printed matters. By using templates the customer doesn´t have to redo their layout for every new edition. Bromma tryck AB has invested the system CiPublisher, which is applied for the customer to make their printed matter at Internet. The purpose of the examination work is to investigate the needs of the customers of Bromma tryck for a web to print solution and how such a system should be adapted. The result shows that the customer who is in need of a web to print solution wish such a system to be easy managed and also usable. The customer inquiry also shows that most of the customers primary desire for start using such a solution is that it will save time and also simplify the process for manufacturing of printing matters.

Informationssäkerhet inom grafiska företag2002Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The study shows the current need for security solutions concerning work with information in different areas. Investigations will show important solutions for printers’ needs to meet the increasingly harder demands for fast and safe digital communications. Important factors to be analyzed in the investigations are: access to different types of information, workers authority of information, access to the data base register internally and externally, production solutions for an effective fault detection and data base solutions for orders and distribution. Planned and unplanned stops result in a standard of value in interruptions. Internal data bases are protected by so-called “Fire Walls”, “Watch Dogs” and Virtual Private Networks. Offset plates are locked in for a definitive range of time. Subsequent destruction and remaining sheets are shredded and recycled. All documentation is digital, in business control systems, which guarantees that no important documents are lying around in working places. Fault detection work is facilitated by the ability to fully track the order numbers on incoming orders.

ICC-profilers funktionalitet vid byte av tryckfärgskvalitet2004Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

This degree theme work aims to evaluate the present ICC-profile and printing ink of Dalarnas Tidningar AB. The company has changed printing ink quality and wants to evaluate how the present ICC-profile work with the new printing ink. Four different ICC-profiles were included in the comparison. One test printing was accomplished with two different separations. Two new ICC-profile was created, as a comparing material. An densitometer was used to measure the technical parameters of the printing. IT8-charts and RGB-charts was measured with spectrophotometer. La*b*-values, CMYK-values, graybalance curves, color deflections and color gamuts was compared on screen and on the printed material. Materials from an earlier testprinting and evalution, made by Stora Enso Kvarnsveden AB 2003, was used to evaluate the function of Dalarnas Tidningar AB´s ICC-profile with the present printing ink quality. The IT8-chart from todays testprinting was oppened in a program for textediting to have access to La*b*- and CMYK values. The values from the earlier testprinting was supplied from Stora Enso Kvarnsveden AB. The result of this work shows that the ICC-profile from the company, compared with de other profiles, reproduce darker shadow regions which can make loss of details. An higher saturation is recieved in the red and yellow area while the green and blue area lose its intensity. The profile gave images which are some contrastless and with a flat reproduction. Today printing ink quality gives more saturation and intensity in the yellow and blue area compared with former printing ink. The dark tone reproduces with decreased luminance, however.

    Abstract [sv]

A number of publications has been produced for two companies in Dalarna, Utvecklingshuset and Skönhetsbanken. Utvecklingshuset is working, among other things, with stressyndroms and by treating crises. Their publications consist of a number of product sheets, a folder and a brochure. They want to use the publications for information to their customers. Skönhetsbanken is a beauty saloon who will have a brochure to mediate the services they can offer. Photos have been taken, existing and for this purpose written texts have been used. The softwares Adobe Photoshop 7.0 and Adobe Indesign 2.0 have been used for all publications and the work with producing these has been satisfactory. The effect of a good cooperation with the companies has resulted in that they are pleased with the publications and feel that they have been part of the end of the results. All of the publications have been or will be printed with digital printing methods, which is the reason for the choice of the litterature survey. The survey deals with, among other things, how the digital press works, which papers that are suitable, economic aspects and what a graphic designer should have in mind when it comes to graphic products that will be printed with digital printing methods.

Print quality study of newsprint: Further development of the laboratory offset press at PAPRO2002Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

A laboratory offset press has been developed over the last five years at PAPRO for testing print quality on newsprint, as at present, there is no good way for the mills to test this issue. In this project a comparison has been made between a laboratory offset press and a commercial press to see if the laboratory offset press can be used as a reliable test method or if a further development is needed. To evaluate the method, similar papers have been printed in both presses and compared using image analysis techniques. All together eighteen samples were tested which is enough to give comparable results. The print quality showed a high variation, the values from the laboratory offset press and the commercial press were not following the same trends. At present time the laboratory offset press need some further development before it can be used as a reliable test method for halftone prints. Even so some conclusions were made. The newsprint that has been used came from Norske Skog Tasman Mill (Kawerau), since the other aim of this project was to do a repeatability study of their three existing paper machines to distinguish possible differences in the production. The paper samples were taken from each paper machine on six different dates to give a representative result. This also gave the opportunity to compare the machines between themselves. Comparison between the machines shows that the wire side gives a better and more even result than the topside on the prints from the laboratory offset press. According to the result from the commercial press the wire side shows a higher degree of variability. Samples from paper machine 2 and 3 were less variable and had the lowest standard deviation of grey level for solid areas. This suggests that newsprints from PM 2 and PM 3 give a more even print quality with a better ink coverage.

Evaluation of surface treatment techniques for polypropylene and implementation of a method for testing ink adhesion2004Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

If a plastic material is used as a print bearer there are a need of a special surface treatment to get a god and durable printing. The most used surface treatment technique for the moment is corona treatment. This kind of treatment has unfortunately showed not to be so durable in the long term. Plasma treatment which in this case uses different kind of gases in the treatment of polypropylene is shown as a more effective treatment in this project. When the plasma treated surface has been printed is the good quality last much longer and the adhesion between the ink and the surface is remained. To test this adhesion is for the moment a standard used (ASTM D3359). This standard has appeared unstable and dependent at many different factors, which gives a big variation in the test results. Because of this has new test methods been carried out to give a more even and more reliable result in the test of the adhesion.

Kvalitetssäkring av Clas Ohlson AB´s grafiska produktionsflöde2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The question formulation in the essay brought up whether Clas Ohlson works today with their graphical production flow and if that way of working leads to a desirable result in press. After a dialogue with Clas Ohlson it emerged that they had certain problems with the material that came out of the printing presses. Certain colours were not reproduced according to the stated values that had been developed. In March -08 an analysis of the graphical production flows present situation were done at Clas Ohlsons in order to find out how they worked with their production of print materials. In the analysis, their way to work with color spaces, displays, ICC-profiles, PDF-exports, pictures and printers were examined. Occasional interviews were also implemented with responsible personnel about how they worked with different aspects. Deficiencies were found on almost all examined parts in their graphical production flow. Wrong colorspaces and CMYK-profiles was used in big extent, the displays where uncalibrated or incorrectly calibrated, wrong PDF-presets was used frequently and it also showed that six different suppliers for their printing materials were used. The solutions that were relevant for the problems and defects were later on presented as proposals on measures.

    Abstract [sv]

Until the beginning of the 1900:th century the paper making process was handicraft. The paper machines that have been developed since then are as impressing in size as fascinating when it comes to the technique. The process has always been improved to give a better paper for lower costs, with as short manufacture time as possible. Stratified forming has been a reality since 1830. From the beginning it was applied to board and paperboard. Now it is also the most common method for making tissue and one paper mill in Austria use it for fine paper. Stratified forming can be categorized as separate forming or simultaneous forming. Separate forming means using several headboxes and sometimes even several wires. Simultaneous forming means using only one stratified headbox. This method has many advantages over separate forming, inter alia improved economy, quality, wood exchange and higher runability of the paper machine. Several experiments have been done with simultaneous forming of different fibres by placing a fibre with high bulk in the middle layer and a smooth fibre on the surface layers. The results has shown that by using this method both the bending stiffness and surface properties are improved, or a lower grammage paper is obtained with maintaining quality. Simultaneous forming can also be used to stratify fillers in layers where they are most efficient. In that way both paper quality and economy is improved. Simultaneous forming is also used for fractionated pulp. Fractionation means separating springwood fibre from summerwood fibre, and placing them in separate layers. Research results of fractionated pulp show about the same result as simultaneous forming of different fibres.

Influence of hardwood, softwood and fractionated pulp in a stratified three-layered fine paper: Lövved, barrved och fraktionerad massa och dess inverkan på ett treskiktat finpapper2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Four different trials of stratified three-layered fine paper, of sulphate pulp, were performed to investigate if stratified fine fraction or fibres from birch can improve the properties of a paper compared to a reference sheet. All trials had five different scenarios and each scenario was calendered with different linear load. All sheets had a grammage of 80 g/m2. In the first trial, the paper contained birch, pine and filler of calciumcarbonate (marble), and was manufactured with the pilot paper machine XPM and the stratified headbox Formator at RCF (Stora Enso Research Center in Falun). The furnish consisted of 75% birch and 25% pine. The second trial contained coated sheets with paper from trial one as the base paper. The coating slip contained calciumcarbonate and clay and the amount was approximately 10-12 g/m2. The third trial, also with birch and pine but without filler, was performed at STFI (Skogsindustrins Tekniska Forskningsinstitut in Stockholm) with the laboratory scaled paper machine StratEx and the stratified headbox AQ-vanes. The furnish consisted of 75% birch and 25% pine, except for one scenario which contained of 75% pine and 25% birch. The last trial contained fractionated pulp of birch and pine and was performed at STFI. 50% was fine fraction and 50% was coarse fraction. This test does not show any clear benefits of making stratified sheets of birch and pine when it comes to properties such as bending stiffness, tensile index and surface smoothness. The retention can be improved with birch in the surface plies. It is possible that the formation can be improved with birch in the surface plies and pine in the middle ply. It is also possible that fine fraction in the surface plies and coarse fraction in the middle ply can improve both surface smoothness and bending stiffness. The results in this test are shown with confidence intervals which points out the difficulties of analysing sheets manufactured with a pilot paper machine or a laboratory scaled paper machine.

Är variation i STFI-tjocklek ett bra mått på kartongs bulighet?: Are variation in STFI-thickness a good measure of uneven surface, bumpiness, on cardboard?2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

This degree project aim to evaluate if variations of the STFI thickness can be used to assess bumpiness on cardboard. During the project cardboard samples were measured using Bendtsen, PPS, a L&W formation tester, OptiTopo, Ambertec formation, the STFI thickness tester and a visual comparison. The different methods were then compared to see if there is any correlations between them. The results showed that the visual comparison and OptiTopo correlates. The STFI thickness tester shows however no correlation with the OptiTopo and visual comparison, thus aren't suitable measuring bumpiness.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Endast färg-bilder ingick i undersökningen.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Adjustment to a neutral colour balance when printing was the starting point in this degree project. On this base ICC-profiles were evaluated and assessed. The survey was concentrated on the similarity between reproductions on different papers with various ICC-profiles. The colour balancing introduced a consistent variable between four graphic papers. With raised uniformity the probability increased to receive similarities between the various combinations of ICC-profiles and papers. Numerous of measurements and calculations have been carried out, mainly to confirm whether or not adjustment to a neutral colour balance is possible and repeatable. Further more this gained in comparable values corresponding to similarities and divergences between combinations of ICC-profiles and paper. The research concluded in the fact that it was possible to reach a neutral colour balance. One ICCprofile used together with various papers and also one paper with several ICC-profiles resulted in similarities and formed groups of samples. Since equivalent results could be reached on different samples, it implicated that variations within one paper shouldn’t affect the ICC-profiles. This was valid when the variations were less than the divergence between the papers. Certain predictions on the question of from which paper the ICC-profiles should be generated to create highest quality in print hasn’t been able to assemble. It’s likely that equivalent results could be generated on G-Print, Multi Art Matt and Multi Art Silk.

    Abstract [sv]

To make your company change from a conventional workflow to an ICC-based workflow you need to make investments in time and money. On the other hand you get your reward in terms of a stable and quality safe production. To choose this way of adjusting your company to new routines requires accuracy as well as a great deal of commitment. It is not only about having the right equipment. There are a lot of factors that affect the quality of production. Our ambition with this report is to bring out the importance of general thinking when it comes to ICC-profiling and to discuss on which basis printing profiles should be created. Quality parameters as for example roughness and whiteness of paper are also discussed. To be able to investigate these matters in detail we have taken a closer look at two companies, which have chosen to commit themselves to achive better quality through color management but still feel that they have some problems with their workflow. One of the conclusions that are made in this report is that both companies should extend their investments in education of employees to become less independent of consultants, but also to increase the interest in changes within the company. It is also stressed that an ICC-profile only can be efficient if a company commits itself to accuracy regarding routines, control and calibration.

Alternativa förpackningsmaterial och konstruktioner för »Hackman tools«-serien2001Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Choosing a new plastic material for a container includes several different steps. In this case, the Finnish company Hackman needed a new type of packaging material for their cutlery- and kitchentool series »Hackman tools«. The project was carried out in cooperation with the design agency Ytterborn & Fuentes, which has Hackman as a client. Several different demands were put on the material in order to fulfill as many of the clients wishes as possible. The most urgent problem with the existing container was the difficultys for the customer to clearly see the contents in the container. Because of this problem the customer tried to open the container in the shop. To avoid this from happening, Hackman wanted a more transparent plastic material that still fulfilled all other necessary properties such as strength, viscosity, printability, sealability and exhaustion strength. The final result and recommendation of a polypropylen-plastic (Evacast) was based on detailed studies of packaging plastics and their properties as well as discussions with plasticconverters and suppliers. The recommended plastic is avaliable in several different models that fulfill all demands on material properties, environmental aspects, cost aspects and transparency. Apart from the material problem the project also included drafting some sketches and ideas on new construction solutions for the container. The construction of the exsisting container was also a problem because of its complexity. As a result of the change of material it has been possible to simplify the construction.

    Abstract [sv]

This degree project has been carried out on the commission of AB Borlänge Energi. The purpose of this project was to redesign the magazine Energitrycket. The magazine should inform about the current events at the company. The work consisted of redesign of the existing magazine and adjustment to copying and publishing on the web. This project also contains a research about how paper and colour affect the print results. It shows that the maximum contrast and sharp image reproduction is best achieved on woodfree, coated, calendered paper with high whiteness. An uncoated, light yellow paper is however to recommend for a printed matters with a lot of text. It also shows that every production unit reproduces colours differently. To get a good colour reproduction and a good communication between these units, they must be calibrated, and well-functioning ICC-profiles must be created.

    Abstract [sv]

There are two objectives of this study. The first one was to study the new instrument Deltack from Prufbau, and with the new knowledge, study the interaction between blanket and paper. Deltack is a new instrument to measure the ink splitting force. Blankets from an earlier study done by GATF have been montered on 12 different Deltack print forms and those have together with Deltack been the base for this project. This study together with information from GATF’s study shows that some of the blankets have a higher capability to adsorb ink. Those blankets generate a sharper shape on the force curve, they have a lower dot gain, but they print not as good solid.

Idre Fjäll currently has not full control of how visitors experience their site or if it has good usability. I have helped the company to do a usability test on their website to see how and where any improvements can be made on the page before the winter season 2010. I have also done a survey to investigate how users perceive Idre Fjälls website. Ten people of various ages participated in the survey. All test subjects was recorded with both audio and screen activity during the tests. The test consisted of five different tasks to be solved over the internet at Idre fjälls website. Nr 1, 3, 4 and 5 was solved for most without problem. In nr 2, where a booking of a house would be done, here arose a problem in nine tests out of ten. The results show that the site has very good graphic design and information design, but some weaknesses in interaction design. I have worked out proposals on the most significant problems identified during the test.

    Abstract [sv]

A strong brand can help a company to be easier to recognize and be remembered by their customers. Part of branding is to create a visual appearance which is called a graphic profile and contains information on for instance a logo, colours or typography. The objective of this thesis was to create a graphic profile for Stjørdal Tannhelsesenter that could serve as a base for a brand work in the future. It was important to analyze how the clinic wants to be perceived and how it is perceived today. The methods used to carry out this study were questionnaires, researches and a focus group. The work resulted in the generation of a graphic profile that included a new logo, colours, decorative elements, fonts, templates for stationery, business card / badge, imagery, and examples of some publications. According to the test which was made to examine the results of the project showed that I was successful and that the new design meets all the requests from the previous questionnaires.

Effektivisering för att nå kortare intagstider2007Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

The aim for this thesis was to develop a proposal of documentation, containing rules and procedures, which Jernström Offset needs to acquire the Certified Graphic Production certification. A fundamental part was to study the material issued by Sveriges Grafiska Mediaförening, to clarify the requirements that must be met to obtain the certification. The recommendations found in the CGP material must also be considered. Based on the requirements and recommendations of Certified Graphic Production, a mapping of the workflows at Jernström Offset was performed. It was done by interviewing employees from different departments at the company, this to get a clear understanding of the operations carried out throughout the production flow and the final quality follow-up. During our reviewing process we found that a number of changes, in terms of working environment and practices, must be made at the company. As a result of this we propose some appropriate actions to be implemented. The documentation was finally written, through the requirements and recommendations of Certified Graphic Production and then applied to Jernström Offset’s work procedures.

Grafisk profilering och marknadsföring av fotogruppen Studio Fornby2004Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Summary A complete graphic profile program along with marketing material has been produced for seven photographers. The material has been produced in consideration to sell their pictures outside of Scandinavia and Brazil as first priority. The criterion for the profile is to give a message of quality and of Scandinavia. Through research and interviews facts about typical scandinavian design have been found. Since the pictures will be exported abroad, a selling packaging solution has been developed. The parts that are included in the marketing material are: a brochure, display solution, a website and printing examples. One of the purposes with the project is that the company from the given price offer can evaluate the posibility to produce pictures.

Grafisk profilering med praktisk tillämpning på Rookiefestivalen2004Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

This degree project includes both a theoretic component and a practical component within the graphic profiling domain. Literature on graphic design has been studied for the theoretical part and the achieved knowledge has been used for the practical part. The project has been to produce graphic material for “Rookiefestivalen” in Hultsfred. In modern society it is important for a corporation to distinguish itself from others by using a graphic profile. Through using a graphic profile the company can have an affect on how it is perceived by others. This is true not only for corporations as both organisations, societies and other events will benefit from the use of a graphic profile. The material that’s been produced is not within the traditional boundaries of graphic profiling. It is rather marketing material for the festival. The graphic profile was applied to a variety of things such as posters, flyers, ad’s and the festival’s website. The result is to be seen in the appendix of this degree project and on the Internet: http://www.rookierockparty.se

Materialundersökning2002Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

This report emphasizes the importance of seeing a university as a company that offers a service. It is important to see the different quality dimensions that distinguish a service. The customer-focused planning has also set the structure of this degree project. The marketing investigation is based on recruit questionnaires and interviews with secondary school students. The questionnaires show that the catalogue still reaches out with most information despite constant increase of information search at the Internet. The students seem to prefer University of Kristianstad´s catalogue front. The competition analysis is based on telephone interviews and information material sent from the other universities. Structure, usage of the graphic profile amongst more is reviewed for every university. The answers have varied a lot but there are few that have a good structure. University of Dalarna´s information material has neither structure nor a homogenous look. The employees at University of Dalarna are not using the universities graphic profile. They are also dissatisfied regarding the absence of pre-produced, general overhead film series. The internal analysis also shows that the employees don’t know which material is accessible or where to find it.
