    Abstract [en]

    HIAK is a manufacturer of industrial silencers where the main component is several square silencer bars. In order to produce these silencer bars outside of Hedemora the manufacturing methodology must be updated. Therefore, alternative methods must be found to replace the present methodology and the best way of bending and joining steel sheets for this application are studied.A comparison of different bending and joining methods is made with the specifications available for the silencer bar, along with other limiting factors like material and surroundings. Each method is analysed to bring forth advantages and disadvantages and the most promising methods are presented through several concepts.Some parts of the present bending process are already the most effective solution and should not be replaced unless other changes in design requires it. Other parts of the bending process are not suitable to use other than within the current location in Hedemora because of how specialised the process is. There are however several bending methods available to replace the current specialised process for keeping the functions using a simpler process.Joining methods used today are difficult to replace because of the design of the silencer bar as a result of its needed specifications. Suitable methods to replace todays process are either too sensitive around high temperatures or too sensitive to vibrations. To be able to use a different joining method a change in design is most likely needed.

    Abstract [en]

    A physical based model for the evolution of flow stress of AISI 316L from room temperature up to 1300 °C, strains up to 0.6 and strain rates from 0.0005 up to 10 s-1 is developed. One set of tests have been used for model calibration and another more complex set of tests for its validation. The model is based on a coupled set of evolution equations for dislocation density and (mono) vacancy concentration. Furthermore, it includes the effect of diffusing solutes in order to describe dynamic strain ageing (DSA). The model described the overall flow stress evolution well with exception of the details of the effect of the DSA phenomenon. Its numerical solution is implemented in a format suitable for large-scale finite element simulations.

    Abstract [en]

    The work done in this report has been performed in cooperation with ABB Components in Ludvika, which is a business unit within the ABB group. Components manufactures components for power transmission, including bushings that allow high voltage current to be led through grounded planes.

    The purpose of the thesis is to investigate the possibilities to perform seismic calculations in Creo Simulate. The background is that the designers in Components have access to the simulation tool, Creo Simulate, in Creo Parametric 2.0 software but they do not use it for seismic calculations. All advanced earthquake analyzes are conducted at Corporate Research in Västerås. Components therefore want to investigate whether there is a possibility to perform more seismic analyzes in Ludvika by using Creo Simulate.

    To achieve the goal of the survey, methods such as literature searches in databases, studies of internal documentation and simulation with the finite element methodology have been applied. The simulations are made according to the response spectrum method and are performed in accordance with the requirements specified by a given standard. Restrictions have been possible to identify in Creo Simulate using a model of a bushing. These limitations are presented at the end of this report.

    Abstract [en]

    Automotive racing engines often use a dry sump lubrication system to cater the engine need for lubrication. With this kind of lubrication system the oil is forced in to the engine by positive displacement pumps from an external tank. The positive displacement pumps are almost always connected to the engine crankshaft. This connection is usually with a fixed gearing, which means that the pump speed is proportional to the speed of the crankshaft. With this type of connection the oil supply is proportional to the speed of the engine. This type of connection delivers too much oil with higher engine speeds. This means that some oil has to be vented back to the pump inlet. This work with venting excess oil is a parasitic loss.

    A better solution to deliver oil is by a pump with variable displacement. With a variable displacement the capacity is altered to meet engine demand. This project presents how an oil pump with variable displacement is developed from a concept to basis for a physical prototype.

    To be able to take advantage of previous experience in projects and thereby alter and improve future projects, thus leading to a higher quality and hopefully better efficiency, a standardized approach is needed. Existing documents are not used at desired level at Creator Teknisk Utveckling AB. This work has through interviews revealed how the company work in day-to-day projects and then with the help of theories, propose appropriate changes to existing controlling documents in projects. Understanding of the documents and its importance has increased thanks to meetings with Project Managers, Construction Manager and the author of this report.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis has been performed on ELE Engineering AB in Borlänge. The purpose of this report is to investigate and sum the requirements that is necessary for CE-marking of lifting accessories in EU. The report clarifies the requirements that is specified in the machinery directive. The requirements have been combined into a method of construction that ELE can use to ensure that a lifting accessory fulfills all essential requirements. Through the requirements of documentation, design, function and safety was a structure with 8 fragments made. The fragments were worked over by the PDSA-cycle to make use of ELE´s current design method. For ELE to work in a standardized manner with lifting accessories, templates were created for the requirement specification, lifting protocol and operating instructions. By following the method that was formed, ensuring that all requirements for lifting accessories are met, ELE can CE-mark every lifting accessory that is designed.

    Abstract [en]

    This degree project took place at SSAB in Borlänge and describes a construction development process. The work is part of a bigger investment project intended to increase the production capacity of annealed sheet metal and takes place in the end of the production line. To secure that the sheet fulfills the promised mechanical properties samples is taken of out every sales order. To trace the sample every sheet is marked with product information. At this moment the process is manual but with the help of this project the sequence will be automated.

    With regards to the existing conditions and the functional requirements on the workplace a construction has been developed. Suitable methods and calculations was performed to ensure that the unit will be functional. The design partly consists of a ”receiver” developed to transport the sheet metal samples vertically. The ”receiver” is connected to the main production line via a belt conveyor. When the sheet sample has been placed a roller conveyor is used to transfer it to a industrial robot for final handling.

    The CAD-software Inventor has been used as help during the development. All components in the construction has been designed and evaluated. Multiple concepts was compared to each other with the use of ”concept screening”. The life cycle of the construction has been taken in consideration, from the manufacturing, transportation, to use and maintenance.

    Abstract [en]

    This bachelor thesis was performed at Dalelven Produktutveckling AB whom in cooperation with HIAB is developing a VR-system that will enable operation of a timber crane on a truck from the trucks cab. My task in this project was to analyze and evaluate the most appropriate materials and manufacturing methods were a number of components from the camera body in the VR-system.

    The results of the analysis , collected data and interviews showed that all the reference material of the latest prototype was suitable to be used for further production. Regarding production, plaster molding was preferable to previously used manufacturing methods for the camerabodys three main parts. Recommendations for the other details was milling and 3D-printing.

    The result would then be the basis for the production data of the camera body.

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility and effects of implementing a PLC in a high-voltage circuit breaker and to find an appropriate PLC for the implementation.

    The result was a large amount of reduced wiring, which in turn results in cost savings directly and indirectly, and that the product range is reduced.

    The concept chosen is a robust modular PLC that can handle very extreme conditions.

    The amount of cables is reduced because of the increased communication capabilities that PLCs are equipped with for fast data transfer.

    A high voltage circuit breaker is applied in very variable and extreme conditions, resulting in high demands on the components placed inside the operating mechanism.

    Through a market analysis, different concepts were collected, which were then brought into a concept selection matrix where the concepts were weighted against each other to find the best concept.

    PROCMA AB is a new company with only a few employees. The company is active in industrial

    engineering and has developed its own facility for washing of concrete mixer trucks. Then

    PROCMA AB lack their own manufacturing is now completely dependent on their suppliers.

    In order to assure the quality of their business required a structured management system.

    Literature and standards are mostly targeted towards large companies and requires a complex

    organization. Then PROCMA AB is a small company and has a minimal organization requires

    structured and focused on quality assurance.

    As a qualitative case study, the thesis identified the process of production activities. Major focus

    was on purchasing and procurement. Management's view of quality have been identified and

    been the basis for both the policies and continued work.

    Involvement and participation is the foundation of PROCMA AB. By establishing routines and

    supporting documents ensures that the commitment is transferred to take well-founded decisions

    and to maintain customer focus.

    Continuous improvement is essential in quality assurance. Then PROCMA AB is newly

    established and has not used any activities or processes they need to update its processes both

    during the activities after completing the process. Management recommended to update policies

    and its values as the business increased.

    Nästan alla materialflöden har en startpunkt och en slutpunkt. I detta examensarbete, gjort i samarbete med AB Borlänge Energi, berörs dessa start- och slutpunkter i form av producentansvar och avfallshantering. Producenterna har ansvar för insamlandet av avfall rörande bland annat förpackningar och returpapper samt att utforma förpackningen på ett sådant vis att minsta möjliga miljöpåverkan förekommer. Om (Avfallsutredningen (SOU 2012:56), 2012) kommer fram till att kommunerna får överta insamlingsansvaret för producentansvarsprodukterna, kan det komma att förändra förutsättningarna för insamlingssystemens utformning och vilka insamlingsresultat som kommer ur dessa. Kommunerna kan stå i ett vägval hur dessa system i framtiden skall se ut och vilka konsekvenser detta kan få.

    I Borlänge kommun visar statistik från plockanalyser att det finns 43 procent returpapper och förpackningar i brännbar fraktion. Detta vill AB Borlänge Energi ändra på då detta ger en förhöjd kostnad för förbränning samt att det inte är miljömässigt försvarbart att energiåtervinna material som kan materialåtervinnas. Kommunen har även mål för avfallshanteringen i sin avfallsplan som bör uppfyllas. Beroende på vilket insamlingssystem som väljs i framtiden kan lösningen för detta se olika ut. Genom att studera andra kommuner i landet och intervjuat ansvariga för avfallsfrågor, antyder svaren att Borlänge kommun ger väldigt knapphändig information till hushållen om avfallssortering. En frekvent förekommande orsak till att vissa kommuner lyckas samla in stora mängder förpackningar och returpapper är, enligt de intervjuade personerna, lyckade informationskampanjer samt återkommande information och återkoppling. Vilka insamlingssystem som används har viss betydelse, men utan en aktiv information nås inte målen, oavsett system. Det går att urskönja en förbättrad insamlingsmängd med fastighetsnära insamling genom både optisk sortering och fyrfackssystem, men i första hand bör kommunens ansvariga se över sitt informationsflöde innan annan åtgärd görs.

    Conceptual Product Development in Small Corporations2010Licentiate thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    The main objective of the thesis “Conceptual Product Development in Small Corporations” is by the use of a case study test the MFD™-method (Erixon G. , 1998) combined with PMM in a product development project. (Henceforth called MFD™/PMM-method). The MFD™/PMM-method used for documenting and controlling a product development project has since it was introduced been used in several industries and projects. The method has been proved to be a good way of working with the early stages of product development, however, there are almost only projects carried out on large industries which means that there are very few references to how the MFD™/PMM-method works in a small corporation. Therefore, was the case study in the thesis “Conceptual Product Development in Small Corporations” carried out in a small corporation to find out whether the MFD™/PMM-method also can be applied and used in such a corporation. The PMM was proposed in a paper presented at Delft University of Technology in Holland 1998 by the author and Gunnar Erixon. (See appended paper C: The chart of modular function deployment.) The title “The chart of modular function deployment” was later renamed as PMM, Product Management Map. (Sweden PreCAD AB, 2000). The PMM consists of a QFD-matrix linked to MIM (Module Indication Matrix) via a coupling matrix which makes it possible to make an unbroken chain from the customer domain to the designed product/modules. The PMM makes it easy to correct omissions made in creating new products and modules. In the thesis “Conceptual Product Development in Small Corporations” the universal MFD™/PMM-method has been adapted by the author to three models of product development; original-, evolutionary- and incremental development. The evolutionary adapted MFD™/PMM-method was tested as a case study at Atlings AB in the community Ockelbo. Atlings AB is a small corporation with a total number of 50 employees and an annual turnover of 9 million €. The product studied at the corporation was a steady rest for supporting long shafts in turning. The project team consisted of management director, a sales promoter, a production engineer, a design engineer and a workshop technician, the author as team leader and a colleague from Dalarna University as discussion partner. The project team has had six meetings. The project team managed to use MFD™ and to make a complete PMM of the studied product. There were no real problems occurring in the project work, on the contrary the team members worked very well in the group, having ideas how to improve the product. Instead, the challenge for a small company is how to work with the MFD™/PMM-method in the long run! If the MFD™/PMM-method is to be a useful tool for the company it needs to be used continuously and that requires financial and personnel resources. One way for the company to overcome the probable lack of recourses regarding capital and personnel is to establish a good cooperation with a regional university or a development centre.

    Energy Storage for a Grid-Connected PV-System: A Feasibility Study2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 12 credits / 18 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    The work presented in this thesis concerns the dimensioning of an Energy Storage System (ESS) which will be used as an energy buffer for a grid-connected PV plant. This ESS should help managing the PV plant to inject electricity into the grid according to the requirements of the grid System Operator. It is desired to obtain a final production not below 1300kWh/kWp with a maximum ESS budget of 0.9€/Wp. The PV plant will be sited in Martinique Island and connected to the main grid. This grid is a small one where the perturbations due clouds in the PV generation are not negligible anymore.

    A software simulation tool, incorporating a model for the PV-plant production, the ESS and the required injection pattern of electricity into the grid has been developed in MS Excel. This tool has been used to optimize the relevant parameters defining the ESS so that the feed-in of electricity into the grid can be controlled to fulfill the conditions given by the System Operator. The inputs used for this simulation tool are, besides the conditions given by the System Operator on the allowed injection pattern, the production data from a similar PV-plant in a close-by location, and variables for defining the ESS. The PV production data used is from a site with similar climate and weather conditions as for the site on the Martinique Island and hence gives information on the short term insolation variations as well as expected annual electricity production. The ESS capacity and the injected electric energy will be the main figures to compare while doing an economic study of the whole plant. Hence, the Net Present Value, Benefit to Cost method and Pay-back period studies are carried on as dependent of the ESS capacity.

    The conclusion of this work is that it is possible to obtain the requested injection pattern by using an ESS. The design of the ESS can be made within an acceptable budget. The capacity of ESS to link with the PV system depends on the priorities of the final output characteristics, and it also depends on which economic parameter that is chosen as a priority.

    Abstract [en]

    Rotork is a company that manufactures pneumatic actuators that are mounted and

    operate on valves. The don is sold all over the world and operates in the temperature

    range -47 to 150 ° C. The interface between the actuator and the valve must be

    manufactured according to the ISO 5211: 2017 standard. Because many valves are not

    manufactured according to the standard, Rotork has developed a solution to allow

    installation in form of a center ring. The ring is made by injection molding in a

    thermoplastic.

    Today's supplier cannot manufacture the product within tolerances. This means,

    among other things, that Rotork's fitters must process each delivered ring but also

    that the product is not fully manufactured according to the promised standard.

    The purpose of the work is to develop a center ring that can be manufactured and

    maintained within the tolerances of the standard regardless of the surrounding

    environment.

    First, a requirement profile was established for the center ring, different materials

    and manufacturing methods were investigated. Then 10 concepts were developed,

    and three conceptual solutions could be presented with the aid of screening and

    scoring matrix. Two of them are alternative designs for the center ring and the third,

    my recommendation, is a solution where the center ring is removed as a separate

    detail and integrated into the actuator cylinder.

    Med de premisser att det endast är priset som avgör materialvalet i plåten till väggskenorna såverkar inte höghållfast plåt vara något konkurrenskraftigt alternativ till det befintliga ochmjukare stålet som används i väggskenorna i den befintliga utrustningen.Förslaget på en layout av produktionsutrustning för tillverkning av hyllskenor är en komplett ocheffektiv rullformningslinje som tillverkar väggskenor, hålade U-profiler, som sedan är klara förlackering. Förslaget på produktionslayout innebär utrustningsmässigt ett flöde frånutgångsmaterialet, en haspel för plåtband, en slinga går till inledare, stansning av hålbild,rullformningsdel, riktverktyg och slutligen en sax som kan klippa väggskenorna till önskadlängd. Detta skulle innebära en förbättring i form av en mer resurssnål tillverkning (lean) för SalsAB. Sals skulle då i stället för som med dagens befintliga system som bygger på inköp avtillverkade U-profiler då på ett kontrollerat och mer effektivt sätt själva kunna styra och utförahela produktionen av hyllskenor. Produktionen skulle då ske genom att tillverka väggskenornahelt på egen hand från hasplad plåt. Produktionen kan då utföras mot kundorder, ”just in time”,och därmed undkomma behovet av någon lagerföring av obearbetade profiler vilket annars krävsmed de hittills partivis inköpta U-profiler samt att inte vara längre vara beroende av fungerandeleveranser av dessa.

    Abstract [en]

    The objective of this thesis was to examine how system-level designs (interface between the rail and cab and the emergency brake) should function for The Articulated Funiculator, and the goal was to develop a standard concept to the company Tyréns AB, for future evaluation within their continuing concept development project.

    The result is a concept where the interface between the rail and cab consists of the combination of a roller coaster wheel assembly, and an electromagnetic suspension (maglev technology). The emergency brake resulted in a magnetic brake and a fail-safe friction-acting brake.

    An analysis was conducted on ordinary elevator system-level designs, to identify the next step to its evolution within technical development, according to TRIZ-theory. The interface between the rail and cab showed potentials of future development in breaking the system apart, and recombining it into a new system. It was identified that the emergency brake had to comply with safety rules, for all the directions that The Articulated Funiculator could possibly travel in.

    An extensive research on alternative transportation systems showed possible technical solutions on how to stop The Articulated Funiculator during emergency, safely; and how to steer and hold the car along the rail in a flexible and reliable way.

    The process of concept development was followed; from identifying customer needs, to develop a concept based on gained knowledge on existing technologies from some interesting transportation systems.

    This study has taken place at Monark Exercise AB, Vansbro. The construction work applied to a saddle clamp of Monarks test bikes in the higher price class. The existing saddle clamp was not considered fulfilling the wanted characteristics, the quality did not correspond to the price class and could only be adjusted stepwise.

    The aim of the study was threefold: to investigate the market of existing bike saddles, to make a construction of a saddle clamp with wanted characteristics and, to make a prototype for this saddle clamp. The study followed a product development process and a QFD (Quality Function Deployment) was done.

    The results consists of two different solutions of prototyping and different surface treatment for the concepts. The solutions are of the same basic concept as the original saddle clamp, but with two different technical solutions for tilting of the saddle.

    Abstract [en]

    The Swedish company Panthera designs, manufactures and sells active wheelchairs with a focus on user-friendliness. This implies that their chairs shall be light, flexible and designed for making everyday life easier for the user. The company now want to investigate the possibilities for the making of a removable assist motor, that in line with their vision creates user utility and satisfaction. For this purpose, they have contacted the product development firm Dalelven and through them this project was initiated.  From the project start a rough specification list for the appliance was given by Panthera and the purpose for this report was stated to generate concepts and evaluate capabilities and possibilities for at least one of these. With this in mind a pre-study was conducted, containing an analysis of competitive and similar products, clarification of product specifications and gathering of data for the included components. This material has been used as a basis for the concept generation and, after elimination of less suitable concepts, a deeper evaluation of one of them. The chosen concept shows good potential for meeting the pre-stated specification list and a further investigation is recommended.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis is about identifying and understanding the current flow from order until the first process at ABB Power Transformers Ludvika. The company wants to reduce the inventory levels and reduce management time on the core coils. To make this possible, I have analyzed all the steps between start and stop points and made a flowchart, indicating improvement and proposed actions.

    The work has also, with the theoretical background, calculations and interviews produced information which provides the basis for a future flow and reduces the stock size and its management.

    Abstract [en]

    The problem that GIA has with the material flow is that material and components are oftendelayed, in the wrong place or in the wrong design when they are needed for assembly.Therefore a comparison was made between the routines and processes at GIA and the theoriesand tools of Just-in-Time.

    Just-in-Time is fundamentally a pull concept, meaning that the demand comes from the end ofthe line and pulled through the process. When a product has been sold, a demand for that productis created, a delivery date is set and the product and its components are pulled from the previousstep in the process.

    Just-in-Time is not an optimal method for GIA, however many of the theories are applicable.Because the company does most of its production by customer order it is natural to use a pullconcept.

    GIA is working with continuous improvement, there is a structured improvement work atmanagement level, but the employees at the bottom of the hierarchy are not as aware of what isbeing done or how it is being done.

    The company is working with keeping low inventory levels, but uses a buffer to ensure thatmaterials are available at the assembly station when it is needed. The Just-in-Time theory pushesa system where buffers are not needed because inventory in stock does not add value to thecustomer. Instead, GIA should work together with their suppliers to ensure that deliveries aremade with better precision.

    Another problem at GIA is over processing, a problem that roots as early as in the designprocess, because of the pressure for time, the design engineers often choose the quickest oreasiest solution instead of the best one. Therefore the machines could become both better andcheaper.

    There are a number of additional problems at GIA that leads to problems with the material flow,but the most common seems to be problems with communication, both between departments atGIA and between GIA and their suppliers. To solve the problems with late materials GIA firsthave to solve the problems within the company and improve the communication and routinesinternally.

    The purpose of this degree project is to explore the possibility of reducing the use

    of resources in performing a so-called clean-in-place cleaning. The work answers

    questions about the possibilities that are available to streamline the process or to

    reduce media consumption by shortening rinse times in the cleaning process. The

    main method on which the work is based is factor attempts through trial planning.

    This is a method of structuring trials with several correlating factors. The factors

    that have been altered, with the goal of making resources use more efficient, are a

    reduction of the caustic temperature for cleaning, using different amounts of

    additives in the caustic solution and a shortened time for the last cold water rinse

    in the cleaning process. The analysis shows that approved results for cleaning are

    also obtained after changes have been made. A large part of the work has been

    focused on understanding the system's structure and function. Recycling waste

    water to a greater extent and using a lower caustic concentration could possibly

    allow to further reduce resource consumption.

    Abstract [en]

    Pellet boilers requires maintenance which includes removal of ash in the boiler, which customers have neither the time nor the will to perform manually. Therefore, the objective of this report has been to develop one or two concept proposals for an automatic ash removal system.The result consisted of two concepts to keep working with, both of which contains a screw con-veyor. Both solutions works in such a way that the screw transporter carries the ashes from the upper part of the boiler down to the ash box. The screws are driven by a motor with the help of shell wheels and shell screws.Why these two concepts became finalists was due to the fact that they both meet the tempera-ture requirement that the chimney has, removal of ash at least once a week, no change of the boiler design, manufacture on site and able to sell spare parts. However, these solutions are very expensive since the prices that were collected are for end users. There are opportunities to reduce costs so the requirement of the production costs is not exceeded, which is 1500 SEK.These conditions and requirements that were used as the basis for the selection of the concepthave been obtained through literature studies on, for example, pellets, ash, turbulator and chimney, as well as customer surveys and also internet search of existing automatic ash removal systems.

    This report covers the procedure for measuring cable samples. Cables will have been quality tested and one part of this quality testing is to measure insulation and sheath thickness. This is done by removing a sample from the cable which is measured in a cable measuring device. When the measurement is done the statistics are saved in a database. For different reasons unacceptable variations in these measurement statistics occur. This means that a cable can be within the given tolerances in reality, but appears to be outside those tolerances in the statistics because it is compared to the wrong template (article file) by the cable measuring device’s software.

    The purpose of this report is to develop a model guaranteeing that the measurement statistics within the cable measurement database are correct so that in future work with statistical process control can be carried out. Through interviews, observations and data collection the causes of the variations will be investigated.

    The report provides a proposed solution where, through a standardized work procedure, with motivated employees and a committed leadership, it gives the tools to work with statistical process control. This statistical process control provides a means to, among other things, decrease costs resulting from incorrectly sized cables.

    Abstract [en]

    The capacitor test process at ABB Capacitors in Ludvika must be improved to meet future demands for high voltage products. To find a solution to how to improve the test process, an investigation was performed to establish which parts of the process are used and how they operate. Several parts which can improves the process were identified. One of them was selected to be improved in correlation with the subject, mechanical engineering. Four concepts were generated and decision matrixes were used to systematically select the best concept. By improving the process several benefits has been added to the process. More units are able to be tested and lead time is reduced. As the lead time is reduced the cost for each unit is reduced, workers will work less hours for the same amount of tested units, future work to further improve the process is also identified. The selected concept was concept 1, the sway stop concept. This concept is used to reduce the sway of the capacitors as they have entered the test facility, the box. By improving this part of the test process a time saving of 20 seconds per unit can be achieved, equivalent to 7% time reduction. This can be compared to an additional 1400 units each year.

    Abstract [en]

    When a train is passing or coupling in a curve or slope on the track it is important that the train coupling can move freely side and height wise. It is also important that the train coupler stays in a centered position when uncoupled, for this purpose there is a support and centering module in Dellner Couplers train couplers. This module contains a part, the front bracket, which main task is to fasten two support dampers to the train couplers main damper. The task was to develop a front bracket that is applicable no matter what other modules that make up the individual train coupler and produce a basis for prototype manufacturing.

     

    This paper shows the entire development process in detail, it describes the methods used, how they were used and what conclusions were drawn from this. Performed calculations are also shown in the appendices.

     

    The result consists of a fully developed front bracket and a basis for prototype manufacturing. The basic concept behind the new front bracket is the same as for the current one but it contains some new solutions. The developed front bracket will not be applicable in all the possible combinations as the task implied, it seems to be impossible to develop such a bracket. Therefore the result also includes ideas for how other parts of the support and centering module should be developed in the future to create a solution that is applicable in all the possible cases. These solutions should be investigated in accordance with a proposed process for the future work.

    A frame for a crimping machine is developed primary to reduce the manufacturing cost of the frame. This is done by designing a component that uses another method of manufacturing, laser cutting, and multiple thinner components, in the tested cases it is 8 components. There are possibilities to use more or less components depending on situation. The shape of the original frame is kept since after testing it is the most efficient one. The tests with less material on the outermost plates lost stability and thereby got deformed too much in the most cases tested.

    Abstract [en]

    In this project, two broad facets in the design of a methodology for performance optimization of indexable carbide inserts were examined. They were physical destructive testing and software simulation. For the physical testing, statistical research techniques were used for the design of the methodology. A five step method which began with Problem definition, through System identification, Statistical model formation, Data collection and Statistical analyses and results was indepthly elaborated upon. Set-up and execution of an experiment with a compression machine together with roadblocks and possible solution to curb road blocks to quality data collection were examined. 2k factorial design was illustrated and recommended for process improvement. Instances of first-order and second-order response surface analyses were encountered. In the case of curvature, test for curvature significance with center point analysis was recommended. Process optimization with method of steepest ascent and central composite design or process robustness studies of response surface analyses were also recommended. For the simulation test, AdvantEdge program was identified as the most used software for tool development. Challenges to the efficient application of this software were identified and possible solutions proposed. In conclusion, software simulation and physical testing were recommended to meet the objective of the project.

    Hot rolling process is heat input process. The heat energy in hot rolled steel coils can be utilized. At SSAB Strip Product Borlänge when the hot rolled steel coils came out of the hot rolling mill they are at the temperature range of 500°C to 800°C. Heat energy contained by the one hot rolled steel coil is about 1981Kwh whereas the total heat energy for the year 2008 is 230 GWh/year.The potential of heat is too much but the heat dissipation rate is too slow. Different factors on which heat dissipation rate depends are discussed. Three suggestions are proposed to collect the waste heat from hot rolled steel coils.The 2nd proposal in which water basin is suggested would help not only to collect the waste heat but to decrease in the cooling time.

    This report is about the pulp´s implements, a system for measuring their overall equipment efficiency at the plants. This is called OEE-measurement system where the input parameters are availability, plant utilization and quality. Today Ortviken got a problem whit that there is no good way to measure the pulp´s availability and plant utilization of the equipment included in the facility. When it comes to their quality measurement, it is the one they've come along and is considered a good and working method to keep track of the quality. In this report I will bring forward a proposal on how the pulp mill can break down their measurements on individual devices. This proposal will provide a basis for the pulp mill, better able to more quickly find faults that exist out there in the plant and where they can find measures that improve the lot of the plant's total equipment efficiency

    The purpose of this assignment at SSAB Tunnplåt in Borlänge was mainly to investigate and describe the circumstances for the spare parts stored in storage facilities within the area of operation. Even new facilities which could serve as storage rooms and their opportunities for storing spare parts were an important part of the investigation. This because of the need for improved storing of spare parts. Furthermore, market offers where reviewed for storage of spare parts in more tailored designs. The work will culminate in proposals for improvement which is of importance for the development surrounding the storage and handling of spare parts. This is since the design and management of existing storage facilities is not perceived as satisfactory with regards to spare parts characteristics. Moreover, the amount of stock locations is too few in relation to the actual need. The approach used to achieve objectives of the work was an advanced mapping for collection of vital data. The mapping consisted of interviews with involved parties, both internal and external, for the most comprehensive picture of the problems as possible. In addition, a literature survey was conducted to identify possible options for the objectives of the work as well as a personal study of existing and new storage facilities. Furthermore, the market offers for improved conditions in storage rooms were examined. A clear picture of internal logistics and warehouse activities for spare parts at SSAB Tunnplåt has been obtained during this work. From this picture, it is concluded that work in and around storage facilities can be made more efficient. SSAB Tunnplåt should additionally make efforts in the storage facilities for better use of the available storage space. A number of proposals for improvement for each studied storage facility and spare parts management in general have been conducted. These proposals for improvement include presentations to improve the design of the studied storage facilities towards enabling more stock locations. The proposals also include additional equipment for handling spare parts, scrap handling, as well as expansions of the maintenance system which supports activities in the spare parts management.
