The Insanity Plea in The Butcher’s Wife2019Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In 1983, Li Ang, a Taiwanese female writer, adapted a husband-killing case, which was committed by Zhan Zhou Shi in Shanghai in 1945, into the novel The Butcher’s Wife. The case is also recorded in The Hearsay in Shanghai written by Chen Ding-Shan. The Butcher’s Wife depicts a woman who, due to her traumatized childhood and psychological condition caused by her husband and neighbours, kills her husband, a butcher, and dismembers the body the way he does pigs.

Li Ang’s novel tries to offer a legal explanation to exonerate the butcher’s wife, Lin Shi, through a plea of insanity. In this article, I will compare the case of Zhan Zhou Shi both in the media and in The Hearsay in Shanghai with The Butcher’s Wife to illustrate Li Ang's reinterpretation of the case and explain how Li Ang goes beyond the insanity pleas that strengthens a stereotypical insane image of female offenders.

The Legend of 1900: Law, Space, and Immigration2024In: International Journal for the Semiotics of Law, ISSN 0952-8059, E-ISSN 1572-8722Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, more than 4 million Italians migrated to the United States of America (U.S.), which they regarded as a utopia. The flm The Legend of 1900, which was inspired by Alessandro Baricco’s monologue Nocecentoand directed by Giuseppe Tornatore, tells the story about the genius pianist 1900, an orphan, who is fostered by Danny, a black coalman in the boiler room of an ocean liner, and whose parents are presumably Italian immigrants. Due to immigration law, 1900, a man with neither identity, visa, nor legal papers, cannot legally set foot on American soil. As a genius pianist, his existence is nothing more than that of musician—an entertainer to passengers on the gigantic trans-Atlantic liner Virginian, the only place he is permitted to live. According to Michel Foucault’s notion of heterotopia, a ship is “a piece of foating space, a placeless place”—a vessel transporting people to the land of their dreams. However, 1900, who has no legal status, will never arrive in utopia aboard Virginian. He can only construct a heterotopia—a mirror of utopia—so that it to him is a utopia. In the eyes of the law, 1900 is a legally non-existent person on Virginian, a placeless place. However, it is this lawless heterotopia and isolation that create a genius. In this paper, I illustrate how Virginian, as a place outside the law of land, metaphorically gives birth to a pianist, 1900, and why 1900 at the end chooses not to leave the ship, while also discussing the meaning behind the flm and the relationship between law and space.

Transcultural Movement: Shang Palace, Chinese Haute Cuisine in Paris2022Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Food, as an art form, is a carrier of its own culture. Culture, which is a crucial element to personal and national identity, is not a fixed and unchangeable entity but an ever- lasting process.

As an Asian cuisine, unlike Japanese cuisine which both techniques and tastes have been widely accepted by French people in Paris, Chinese cuisine, although it is well-known and popular, has not been considered as a haute cuisine as French and Japanese cuisine.

This paper aims to explore how Chinese cuisine, which culinary culture is not dominant in Paris, reacts to some infamous incidents—such as the health report about Chinese restaurants in 2004 and Covid-19 outbreak from Wuhan wet market—and reclaims/creates its reputation and identity based on the interview with Samuel Lee, who is from Hong Kong and now is a Michelin-star chef in Shang Palace at Shangri-La hotel in Paris. From this interview, we can see his philosophy about Chinese food, the transculturation of Chinese and French culinary culture, and an overall picture of Chinese haute cuisine in Paris.

    Abstract [sv]

Nationella minoriteter i historieundervisningen: bilder av romer i Utbildningsradions program under perioden 1975-20132015Licentiate thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In 2000 when Sweden signed the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities the Roma minority became one of the acknowledged national minorities in the country. It meant that the rights of the Roma mi-nority would be safeguarded and the knowledge of its history and culture would be spread. In that context, the Swedish school, with its founded as-signment of democracy, was given an important role. The education was to communicate the multicultural values of the society and to make visible the history and culture of the Roma minority.

The school books used in teaching today do not meet these demands. The view of the Roma minority given in school books is often inadequate and simplified. The present study will therefore examine a different type of edu-cational material used in schools and teaching, The Swedish Educational Broadcasting Company‟s programs of history and social studies regarding the Roma minority. Starting in postcolonial theory as well as critical dis-course analysis the study examines how the picture of the Roma cultural and ethnic identity in the Swedish Educational Broadcasting Company‟s material has been displayed and possibly changed during the period of 1975 to 2013.

The results show a picture of Roma which, both in form and content, con-sists of some clearly demarcated discursive categories. The obvious continui-ty of the categories gives a picture of static and invariable Roma identity. At the same time this unambiguous picture is broken both by giving the existing discourses new meaning and also adding new discourses. The complexity and nuances become more prominent and the Roma identity is integrated in common Swedish history telling. The changes in the view of Roma, given by the Swedish Educational Broadcasting Company, can mainly be explained by the change of the Swedish immigration and minority policy and, as a conse-quence of this, the change of the school‟s mission regarding knowledge communication of Sweden as a multicultural country.

Fan activities applied to online university education2016Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The presentation discusses a possible way of adapting internet fan activities to the academic level online education. At the Dalarna University (Sweden), which is specialized in online education, there was a three-year project called “Informal Learning Environment”, which explored the educational aspects of fan activities, and the possible ways to apply them in language (French, German, Japanese, Portuguese) and literature courses.

The educational effects of fan activities are mentioned by various authors (e.g. James Paul Gee), and we focused on two activities, Fan Fiction and Scanlation.

In the Fan Fiction exercise, the students in French and German Literature had an introduction on Fan Fiction, then were asked to choose one of the literary works studied during the semester, and write a short fictional story based on it. Each student uploaded his/her text to the learning platform and then received peer-feedback from others.

In the Scanlation exercise, a group work was designed for the Translation course (Japanese-English translation). Students formed groups of threes and fours and each group translated two different chapters from Shisso Nikki, a manga by Hideo Aduma. They had two weeks to work together, and then the translations were uploaded to the learning platform. Each student then gave comment and feedback to the chapters translated by other groups.

In all courses, students were asked to evaluate the activities afterwards. The evaluation focused on if they enjoyed the activity, what they learned, and what the peer-feedback meant to them. Since we teach only online courses, the web-based interaction becomes very central. This is also the case in fan communities. Therefore, our hypothesis is that connecting fan activities with web-based teaching may be a way to develop and improve the formal academic learning environment.

Cross-Cultural Communication in Next Generation Language Learning: A Case Study of Chinese as a Foreign Language2011In: Proceedings of the Young Scholar Award Competition for the International Conference on Chinese Language Learning and Teaching in the Digital Age, Hong Kong: The Hong Kong Institute of Education , 2011, , p. 19p. 1-16Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Along with the growth of globalization, the importance of developing student’s competence of cross-cultural communication have been emphasized constantly in foreign language education. When a teacher, who is a native Chinese speaker, teaches Chinese as a foreign language to foreign students, the whole process is thus not just “teaching a foreign language”, but also a “cross-culture communication”. In China, the concept of cross-culture communication did not draw much attention in teaching Chinese as foreign language until the 1980s, when a controversial and still ongoing debate started. Despite there are already some generally accepted conclusions that cross-cultural communication approach should be emphasized and implemented in teaching Chinese as foreign language, Chinese is still mostly taught to foreigners in the traditional way owing to the lack of empirical work, resources and supports. Therefore, there is an urgent need for research of implementing the cross-cultural communication approach in both teaching and learning Chinese as a foreign language.

Chinese as a foreign language is now available in both traditional and distance modes. In the last few years, global demand for learning Chinese as a foreign language has been dramatically increasing. And since the traditional mode of education cannot satisfy specific needs of some students, a new generation of distance education, supported by the fast maturing videoconferencing software and the web-based learning in general, generates new alternatives and possibilities for both teaching and learning Chinese as a foreign language. However, this development also constitutes specific challenges for both teachers and students.

With respond to the challenges, a trial of an action research was designed to investigate scope of possibilities (and their limitations) in implementing cross-cultural communication approach into web-based courses of Chinese as a foreign language. The research brought together two areas of current research on teaching foreign languages: (1) the cross-cultural communication perspective and (2) the distance/internet-based education.

    Abstract [en]

This chapter aims to describe how cultures have emerged in interactions among users of the multitude of online platforms that have become available over the past few decades. It discusses innovations regarding uses of representations to communicate identity, time, and space in social practices with technology, and how cybercultures are played out in theory and in practice. Cybercultures resemble cultures in the non-virtual world—but display significant differences regarding social rules, identity, and spatiotemporal issues. Case studies of three types of cybercultures in social media: information and knowledge building on Wikipedia, culture, and virtual world building on Second Life, and dating practices on online dating services, such as Tinder, will shed light on how cyberspace allows for developing both symbolic representations and social practices through computer-mediated communication (CMC), and how users are situated in the continuum virtual-real.

    Abstract [en]

This article is a discursive examination of children's status as knowledgeable moral agents within the Swedish child welfare system and in the widely used assessment framework BBIC. Departing from Fricker's concept of epistemic injustice, three discursive positions of children's moral status are identified: amoral, im/moral and dis/loyal. The findings show the undoubtedly moral child as largely missing and children's agency as diminshed, deviant or rendered ambiguous. Epistemic injustice applies particularly to disadvantaged children with difficult experiences who run the risk of being othered, or positioned as reproducing or accomodating to the very same social problems they may be vicitimised by.

Broadening Ethnographic Following: From Following Conflicts to Following Agreements and Silences in Vaccination Debates2024In: Ethnos, ISSN 0014-1844, E-ISSN 1469-588X, p. 1-18Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

George Marcus’s methodology for multi-sited ethnography is widely discussed and applied in anthropology and the strategy of ‘following the conflict’ has been a fruitful approach to studying controversies and conflicts. Drawing on my shifting methodology in the initial stages of a digital ethnography project on vaccination-related online community forums, I explore ‘the war’ on vaccines using a broadened strategy that includes following agreements and silences within the controversy. By examining the debate in conjunction with medical anthropology research, I discuss how both vaccine-cautious and vaccine-confident forum members challenge conventional debate divisions, such as scientific–unscientific, evidential–anecdotal and genetic–environmental, while still adhering to medico-scientific discourses as zones of agreement. Whereas an agreement-oriented methodology contributes to research on liminal zones and reconfigured forms of bio-citizenship and literacy, the strategy of ‘following silences’ highlights the limits to liminality in a debate underpinned by adultism that silences the views of young people.

The Last of Us2013Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

A catástrofe pós-colonial: ler António Lobo Antunes «à rebours»2014In: / [ed] Maria Graciete Besse et Mònica Güel, Paris, 2014, no 15Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [fr]

    Abstract [fr]

    Abstract [pt]

    Abstract [pt]

När verkligheten blir overklig: När verkligheten blir overklig baserad på de mänskliga sinnenas opålitlighet i samband med mediers bedragande natur2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Uncovering History and FolkloreNear Vasalopps-Arenan: Exploring Functions of Mobile Applications for an E-Guide2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The location of focus is Vasalopps-Arenan, a trail of historical relevance in Sweden both forthe world famous ski race, Vasaloppet, which has been held yearly since 1922, and the journeyof Gustav Vasa, upon which it is named. The potential to expand the all-season use of thetrail with the advent of free Wi-Fi along its 90 km length further supports this means. Vasalopps-Arenan is also the organization responsible for the trail system of the same name.Instead of the ski-race that the arena is best known for, this research focuses on the historicalevidence, stories, myths, and folklore previously underrepresented, and connecting them tophysical and natural phenomena that surround the research area, through the formulation ofnarratives. The introduction of literature related to narrative authenticity and interpretationwill give context to the importance of gathering primary and secondary data, for the creationof narratives that convey the stories accurately and effectively. This data is collected and analysedusing qualitative methods, through which the implemented process of deducing theirinclusion into narratives, will be beneficial for both this study and the organization, VA. Bydoing this, a connection is made between physical attractions and the area’s history and folklore,to satisfy the formulation of narratives that are intended for presentation within a digitalguide or application. A smartphone application that enables the capture of video, audio, photoimages, GPS information, can provide opportunities for much deeper and meaningful e-guideexperiences. Introducing a technological background and current applications in the marketwill provide context for both a scale formed to provide a foundation upon which Vasalopps-Arenan can build user specific information relative to its trail, and to determine what functionswould be most beneficial for the user categories of Vasalopps-Arenan. This study willuncover underrepresented/unrepresented historical data related to folklore, myths, physicalattractions and ancient beliefs within the region of this study’s focus, for the purpose of beingincluded into an e-guide/smartphone application. The study will conclude that the findings fornarrative inclusion are suitable for use within a mobile e-guide platform, and that the functionsof an application intended for different user categories also support the future creation ofthe proposed Vasalopps-Arenan application.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Ways of knowing in ways of moving: A study of the meaning of capability to move2014Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The overall aim of this thesis has been to investigate the meaning of the capability to move in order to identify and describe this capability from the perspective of the one who moves in relation to specific movements. It has been my ambition to develop ways to explicate, and thereby open up for discussion, what might form an educational goal in the context of movements and movement activities in the school subject of physical education and health (PEH).

In this study I have used a practical epistemological perspective on capability to move, a perspective that challenges the traditional distinction between mental and physical skills as well as between theoretical and practical knowledge. Movement actions, or ways of moving, are seen as expressions of knowing.

In order to explore an understanding of the knowing involved in specific ways of moving, observations of  actors’ ways of moving and their own experiences of moving were brought together. Informants from three different arenas took part: from PEH in upper secondary school, from athletics and from free-skiing.

The results of the analyses suggest it is possible to describe practitioners’ developed knowing as a number of specific ways of knowing that are in turn related to specific ways of moving. Examples of such specific ways of moving may be discerning and modifying one’s own rotational velocity and navigating one’s (bodily) awareness. Additionally, exploring learners’ pre-knowing of a movement ‘as something’ may be fruitful when planning the teaching and learning of capability to move. I have suggested that these specific ways of knowing might be regarded as educational goals in PEH.

In conducting this study, I have also had the ambition to contribute to the ongoing discussion of what ‘ability’ in the PEH context might mean. In considering specific ways of knowing in moving, the implicit and taken-for-granted meaning of ‘standards of excellence’ and ‘sports ability’can be discussed, and challenged.

Sketching sounds: kinds of listening and their functions in designing2015In: Design Studies, ISSN 0142-694X, E-ISSN 1872-6909, Vol. 39, p. 19-47Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this work, the use of sketching in sound design was studied. Based on Schon and Wiggins' model of how designers use sketching to see, move, and see again, we suggest that sound design evolves through a similar process requiring listening, moving, and listening again. This is facilitated by considering sounds as sketches. A case was followed in which six designers were asked to design a sound logotype. Processes and interactions were studied. The results suggest that sound design can be considered as a listen move listen process. Sound design is a conversation with sounding material, crucially dependent on listening. To assist in this, a computer interface was developed. Analysis of its use suggests that it supported co-designing. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Transcultural memories of German-Namibian history (1978-1990):: Micro-perspectives from the global autobiographies of Lucia Engombe and Stefanie Lahya Aukongo2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The present thesis deals with the Namibian liberation struggle against the South African regime, by focusing on the relationship of solidarity between SWAPO and East Germany. It provides an original perspective of the German-Namibian history between 1978-1990, by using the life stories of Lucia Engombe and Stefanie Lahya Aukongo. They are Namibian women who, according to the pact of solidarity, lived on the brink between Namibia and East Germany, becoming in this way witnesses of the historical upheavals that have changed the global order. Then, this thesis makes use of

Child No. 95. My German-African Odyssey – the autobiography of Lucia Engombe – and Kalungas Kind: meine unglaubliche Reise uns Leben – the autobiography of Stefanie Layha Aukongo – as sources to investigate the complexities of that period. The global lives of Lucia Engombe and Stefanie Lahya Aukongo allow the combination of macro and micro history and bring out new facets, which otherwise would remain in the shadow. Through the deconstruction of their life narratives, in fact, the big narrative of the global history become fraught with new meanings, bringing out the power of microhistories. This thesis shows how individual autobiographies can be meaningful to history, and how global history can be reconciled with micro-history through the story of global lives, which provide new and unprecedented points of view.

Mobiltelefonen och portabel filmljudinspelning: Jämförelse av ljudkvalitet mellan mobiltelefoner och professionella filmljudinspelare2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]
