    Abstract [en]

Our aim in this study is to investigate what attitudes exist among young Chilean peopletowards Mapudungun. Our other objectives are to establish the interest of learningMapudungun and to investigate if any of the informants identify themselves as mapuche. Thisstudy has been conducted among a small sample of informants in the region Los Lagos inChile. The sample consists of 21 informants between the ages 20 to 30.They answered a questionnaire consisting of two parts. In the first part we establish the ethnicidentity of the informants, and their desire to learn the language. Based on this they weredivided into three groups (mapuche, not mapuche and unsure) to investigate if the attitudesdiffer depending on their ethnicity. The second part of the questionnaire consists of the items. The informants have expressed their agreement or disagreement towards 20 positive ornegative items toward Mapudungun. The results of the analysis indicate that the attitudes towards Mapudungun are positive. However, the results show that the attitudes differ between the groups. We found a morepositive attitude in the mapuche group. We have also established an interest in learningMapudungun among the informants, even those that are not mapuche.

    Abstract [un]

Abstract The objective of the thesis is to find what kind of mistakes a certain group of Swedish students make when studying Spanish as a modern language, specifically when using qualitative adjectives in their singular form. The result is based on the cases of twelve students who study Spanish Level 3, institute level. Four of them were interviewed afterwards. The methods used in this report were the quantitative method which helped quantifying the incidence of these mistakes made by the students through a data sheet, and the qualitative method by analyzing each mistake and the results of the interviews. The conclusion shows that the errors in the use of qualitative adjectives in their singular form occur when the adjectives are feminine, with great higher frequency in feminine abstract adjectives. Key words Adjectives, quantitative method, qualitative method, interlanguage, errors and error analysis

Donde reside la historia: Un análisis de los rasgos alegóricos en La soledad era esto2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [es]

La picaresca en Mortadelo y Filemón2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Mort and Phil (Mortadelo y Filemón) are one of the most famous Spanish comics in thehistory. As some of the characters of Spanish comic they have been sometimes described aspicaresque. The objective of our study is finding out if Mort and Phil play the role of thepicaro. Our study follows the hermeneutic method, taking into consideration the role of thecomic in Spanish society and the concept of picaresque novel. In order to carry out theanalysis, we will look for the characteristics of the picaresque in three stories of theadventures of Mort and Phil. Along the study we will notice the lack of consensus in order todecide what it can be considered a picaresque novel or what not besides showing allcharacteristics of picaresque are not present in this comic. Therefore, we conclude that Mortand Phil can not be considered a picaresque novel but it could be understood as a work ofpicaresque spirit.

Actitudes hacia el murciano: Un estudio comparativo de actitudes que presentan nativosmurcianos e hispanohablantes no peninsulares.2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Murciano is a non-standard variety that is spoken in Murcia, a region in the southeast of Spain. This study aims to investigate which are the attitudes toward the variety from the dimensions ofsolidarity and status. We will use two groups of informants. One integrated by 20 natives from Murcia who use thevariety, and the other by 16 non-spanish-natives that have never been in contact with murciano. The intention with the study is to investigate which attitudes both groups show towardmurciano and analyse the differences and similarities between them. We expect the natives toshow positive attitudes in the dimension of solidarity, and negatives in the dimension of status. We expect the non-natives to show the same kind of attidudes toward both varieties (thestandard-spanish and murciano) while they have never been in contact with the non-standardand therefore should not have the sociocultural background that help people to create negativeattitudes toward non-standard varieties. The chosen method is an indirect one, and the used technique is the matched-guise. Theinformants listen to two different voices talking two times each: one in standard-spanish andone in murciano. After they have listened to one voice in one variety they answer 10 differentquestions to measure their attitudes in the both dimensions we aim to investigate. The resultsare analysed from the gender and the education variables. The results show that the natives attitudes toward murciano are positives from the solidaritydimension but negatives from the status one, results that confirm the first hypothesis. However, the study shows that the non-natives also have negative attitudes toward the variety in the statusdimension but positive toward the standard-spanish, which means that the second hypothesiswas wrong, something that could have been caused by the fact that all non-natives had a higheducational-level. Other studies show that education is a factor that can have a bearing onhaving negative attitudes toward non-standard varieties.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [en]

This thesis analyzes the current state of the language immersion program in Catalonia after its implementation 30 years ago, and after the immigration wave of the last decade. The language immersion is a method of teaching a second language using a language of instruction different than the students’ mother tongue. The Catalan authorities use this as a method for preserving Catalan in the society. The aim of this study is to examine the use of Catalan at school and outside of school by students who have followed the language immersion program. Language attitudes play an important role for the maintenance of a minority language, as Catalan. Therefore, in this study, the informants’ attitudes towards Catalan have also been measured. The method applied is a quantitative method where the informants have answered a written questionnaire. The results show a high level of knowledge of Catalan and its frequent use in the classroom. In contrast, outside of school the Castilian language is more often used. The informants seem to have a positive attitude towards Catalan. The conclusion is that the language immersion works satisfactory in a school context but often fails outside of school.

    Abstract [es]

The aim of this study is to investigate the reasons why young people in Mexico useabbreviations, how abbreviations are used and what kind of abbreviations they use amongtheir group of friends. The study is conducted among a small sample of persons between 18 to30 years old and from one sociocultural group. We studied a group of 20 informants. In this group we included young people working as acashiers, warehouse workers, employees in stores, etc. These informants answered a writtenquestionnaire and we also analyzed 40 of their Facebook messages. In summary, it was noticed that the abbreviations were used because it is a fast way to writebecause they save time. According to the informants “It is fun and is easy to use them whenwriting their messages”. We could see that a few informants use them because it is a new wayof writing as well as considering it to be entertaining to write their messages. When analyzingtheir messages, we saw that these informants do not seem to have rules when writing theirabbrevations, they shorten the words in all forms and place them in any part of theirmessages. They often adapt their way of writing to the pronunciation of the words, similar tothe spoken language. Some words had influences from the caliche jargot (a variety ofcolloquial language used among young people in Mexico). The informants in this study areusing all kinds of abbreviations such as abbreviated words, acronyms and shortenings

La realización del acto de habla del saludo en hispanohablantes residentes en Suecia2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [un]

This essay concerns methods of teaching, with the focus being mainly on methods of grammar, interaction, oral methods and the real context. The purpose of the study is to examine different methods used in the education of Spanish as a foreign language, as well as to show the effect of those methods. The investigation is based on the following questions: Which methods are used by teachers of Spanish as a foreign language? Which of these methods would be the most effective ones when it comes to learning? The methods of investigation used in the study are: search in related literature and interviews. The interviews are made with three teachers of Spanish as a foreign language in Sweden, and the analysis includes a comparison between the responses and the theories found in the literature. The result of the investigation shows that the effect of several of the methods depends on the students involved, their motivation and personalities. Another conclusion made is the fact that dialogues are regarded as effective and of good use in the teaching of a foreign language. Working in groups is moreover considered an excellent method according to the result of this study.

ACTITUDES HACIA LA VARIEDAD CANARIA: Un estudio sociolingüístico de estudiantes universitarios en Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to analyze the language attitudes of twenty university students in

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria towards the Canarian variety of Spanish compared to standard

Spanish. The investigator uses a modified matched-guise technique to test the subjects´

responses to speech samples from four speakers reading the same text: two Canarian speaking

voices and two voices speaking the standard Spanish variety. The subjects listen to the

recording and thereafter answer a questionnaire that evaluates their language attitudes. The

results show that prestige and solidarity are evaluated variously. In the dimension of prestige

the respondents held more positive attitudes towards the standard variety of Spanish while the

Canarian variety received less positive virtues and the respondents evaluated their own variety

in an unfavorable way. In the dimension of solidarity the attitudes towards the Canarian

variety are contradictory, indicating a possible division between the judgement of an educated

    variety and a vulgar variety.

El olvido: Análisis temático de la novela De amor y de sombra2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The realistic novel De amor y de sombra (Of Love and Shadows), by the author Isabel Allende, describes how a young couple fights against the “legalized injustice” in a fictive place that allude to Chile during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. An underlying but crucial theme in the novel is the oblivion – individual, collective and imposed. Therefore we will show by this analysis how the oblivion is presented in the novel De amor y de sombra. The hypothesis that guides our study, is that the oblivion has a greater purpose – to bring out the importance of remember the past. Through a hermeneutic method, we will found our analysis on three theories of oblivion and social oblivion when analyzing characters and occurrences in the novel. Hence, in the conclusion the hypothesis is confirmed, together with the fact that the novel by Isabel Allende makes a statement of the importance of remembering the past.

"La leyenda tiene una base real": Análisis crítico del discurso de un artículo de El País2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper carries out a critical discourse analysis (CDA) of the article "¿Chinofobia?” published by the Spanish newspaper El País. It applies the theory of racist discourse in the media as formulated by Teun A. van Dijk. Its hypothesis is that the article, which supposedly analyses discrimination against the Chinese minority in Spain, covertly blames the Chinese minority itself for the discrimination. Applying CDA methodology as exemplified in previous studies by van Dijk, the paper analyses the article on global and local levels, and delineates its mental model. The global level analysis describes the article in terms of macropropositions and proposes a macrostructure: the self-alienation of the Chinese minority. The paper then analyses how the macrostructure is reinforced on the local level through micropropositions by examining 1) how vocabulary serves the negative presentation and othering of the Chinese minority, 2) how strategies of mitigation minimise discrimination by employing imprecise and vague language, 3) how quotes are used to give coherence and force to the macrostructure, 4) how implications associate the Chinese minority with criminality, and 5) how stereotyped beliefs about the Chinese minority are presented as common sense (presuppositions) and fallaciously argued. Finally, the paper delineates the mental model: the presuppositions about integration, and the implicit warning that minorities should integrate or they will be discriminated against.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate three groups of teachers from Spain, Sweden and Latin America regarding their attitudes towards the varieties of Spanish in the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language (ELE) in Sweden. The results, based on a questionnaire with a relatively limited group of informants, show that a big majority of informants believe that both the Spanish of Spain and Latin American Spanish should be taught. None of the informants had the preference for teaching Latin American Spanish, while a considerable minority was inclined towards Spanish from Spain. This positive attitude towards the peninsular variety is more recognized among teachers of Spanish origin and among the teachers who teaches at the primary school level in Sweden.Grammatical, lexical and phonological aspects have also been compared in the questionnaire but the number of informants in each group was too small for the results to be generalized.

Grammar is one of the most discussed part of language learning. Many studentshave problems understanding how to use the grammatical forms in their ownproduction and communication. The purpose of this work is to investigate theteachers´ attitudes towards grammar and what methods they use when they teachgrammar. The method used in this work is qualitative, with four interviews ofteachers working in the Swedish high school. In order to determine how the teacherswork, we have studied the course plans presented by Skolverket and we have alsostudied what the current research have to say about this. The result shows that theinterviewed teachers mostly vary their methods, using both inductive and deductiveapproaches in order to promote the communicative competence of the students. Theinterviews also show that the teachers have a positive attitude towards grammar, considering it an important part of language learning.

    Abstract [es]

Nahuatl is one of the indigenous languages in Mexico that is at risk of falling out of use. The research in the last years have showed that this occurs due to the low amount of Nahuatl speakers and the social stigma and discrimination towards the indigenous peoples, among other factors. The studies of language attitudes are relevant when making attempts to revitalize a language. As Mexico City authorities have considered to implement a revitalization project, we wanted to approach the real situation of Nahuatl in that city. Our purpose was to measure the attitudes of young people towards this language. By using a direct method –a questionnaire- we asked two groups of students if they agreed or disagreed with some items about Nahuatl and its speakers. One group had contact with Nahuatl speakers and but not the other one. We compared the results and they showed that the students who have contact with Nahuatl have more positive attitudes than those who don’t have any contact with it. This study also revealed that the reason why the first group showed positive attitudes was solidarity with the Nahuatl speakers. However, the both groups considered that speaking or learning Nahuatl cannot contribute to raise their status in the Mexican society.

    Abstract [es]

The purpose of the present study is to elucidate if a correlation exist between certain attributes of a school and the choice of Spanish pronouns of adress (o usted). In the first place we will look at the choice of pronominal form used to communicate with tutors, be they clients or possible clients of the school. Then we will try to determine the reasons behind this choice. Our working hypothesis is that there are different uses of the pronominal form according to the attributes of the school and the social context. We expect a stronger use of as predicted by the « dimension of solidarity » theory. The dependent variables are type of school (public vs partially state funded) the religious nature of the school and its nationality (Spanish vs foreign). The corpus is based upon web pages of 30 public and partially state funded schools located in Madrid. The results are analysed both quantitatively and qualitatively. The results show that a majority of schools use usted in their communication with the tutors, being the only dependent variable that give a more positive result for the use of , the nationality of the school. Consequently, the working hypothesis has been rejected.

    Abstract [en]

This essay will look at three short stories by three different contemporary Spanish female writers, "La buena hija" by Almudena Grandes, "Una historia de amor como otra qualquiera" by Lucía Etxebarria and "Loco con cuchillo" by Espido Freire. The essay will investigate their common theme of the relationship between mother and daughter, mainly from a feministic point of view, as well as the special situation in Spain after the end of the Civil War in 1939. The essay also intends to place the writers into their literary context and investigate the way Spanish feminist writing has developed since 1945.

    Abstract [un]

In this thesis, the main male characters in three of the plays written by Federico García Lorca are analysed with the aim of seeing the role they play in the frustration of desire. After two chapters dedicated to a review of published critical studies on Lorca and to certain theoretical considerations, Chapter Three examines desire drawing on Ubersfeld's actancial model and observes that these male characters can be divided into two groups: those who are desired and those who are undesired. In Chapter Four this classification is linked to an analysis of absence, prohibition and lack. Absence is here defined not as related to their non-appearance on stage but rather to their non-presence in the lives of the desiring female protagonists. It is observed that a number of male characters are absent in the plays mainly due to death or a journey. As far as prohibition is concerned, in two of the works, there is a moral code associated with concepts such as "honour" and "decency", which blocks the female characters' access to the males they desire. Chapter Four also shows how several characters can be considered as lacking in the sense that they do not possess the ideal male qualities contained in the plays. This chapter reaches the conclusion that desired male characters are either absent or forbidden in the world of the desiring female, whereas undesired male characters are lacking in the sense that they fail to live up to the ideal highlighted in the plays. Chapter Five analyses the female characters' perception of the male figures, making use of René Girard's notion of "transfiguration", which alludes to a process of idealisation of the object of desire. Our analysis reveals a connection between desire, denied access to the object of desire and transfiguration in the main subjects of desire. The phenomenon of "transfiguration" has several functions in the play: firstly, the creation of hyperbolical male characters; secondly, that of transmitting the intensity of the desire experienced and, finally, the highlighting of the lack of certain qualities in several male characters. We thus observe that, in these three plays written by García Lorca, Girard's pessimistic view of desire is confirmed, since desire needs a series of obstacles, such as absence or prohibition, to survive. However, this is not the only explanation for the frustration of desire: other factors, like the actions of certain male characters or destiny, also play a decisive role.

    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [en]

The novels written about Spain’s financial crisis of recent years  have in common the representation of an urban space that serves as much more than simply a background. In this article, we want to examine two novels,  La habitación oscura by Isaac Rosa and Animales domésticos by Marta Sanz, which portray the crisis and pre-crisis respectively from the perspective of the space of the city. Social and economic disintegration mirrors itself in the space of the city or, if we reverse this thought: the space of the city serves as a mirror for the decomposition that is found within the novels. We will thus highlight and delve into three phenomena: the representation of the city as a betrayed arcadia, the collapse of certain spaces and the exclusion that this conveys, and, finally, the city’s underground sphere and its relation to death.

    Abstract [en]

This essay looks at slash, a genre within fanfiction, from the perspective of Sedgwick’s theory of the closet, which reflects on the concealing mechanisms associated with homosexuality. While the real author stays in the closet, disguised behind a pseudonym, slash texts present homosexual themes in a very explicit way, often relying on humor or subversive elements. Between these two spheres, the real author and the text, we can find what we call the author’s voice, conscious about the existing homophobic structures, a voice that uses different strategies to shield itself against them. Internet, with the possibility to stay anonymous, serves as a social closet where the masked authors create texts that subvert heteronormativity.

    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [en]

This essay is an analysis of the character María Josefa in the play 'The House of Bernarda Alba' (1936) by Federico García Lorca. It is hypothesized that the character of María Josefa can be considered a distorting mirror of the femininity presented in the play, and that through María Josefa this femininity is both revealed and problematized. The analysis adopts theories from the field of the (female) grotesque, using terminology both from Mikhail Bakhtin and Mary Russo. Throughout the analysis it is demonstrated how the character of María Josefa challenges the boundaries and norms which are dictated by Bernarda to control the women of the house. These conventions are challenged by María Josefa with the use of her loud speech, her dressed up appearance, and in her physical resistance. In this manner María Josefa is creating and embodying an alternate feminine view that is uncovered through her consistent provocation and by making herself into "a spectacle", a transboundary behaviour that is well interpreted within the theories of carnival, the grotesque body, and the spectacle of the female grotesque.
