Genrepedagogik i forskning och läroplan: En systematisk litteraturstudie kring genrepedagogikens framväxt, teoretiska grund, pedagogiska tillämpning och inflytande på den svenska skolan.2017Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Genre pedagogy and the curriculum cycle is commonly applied in schools in Sweden today. Genre pedagogy aims to develop students’ abilities to write texts in different social contexts. The curriculum cycle (or teaching-learning cycle) is the pedagogical model most commonly used in Swedish schools to achieve this aim. This model has many advantages but often tends to become static and prescriptive. This study aims to examine scientific research concerning genre pedagogy and further on how it has influenced the Swedish curriculum. This study shows that genre pedagogy classifies texts into different genres with common features and that both context and language of each text should be analyzed. In school, genre pedagogy is often taught through the four steps of the curriculum cycle. According to some research the curriculum cycle fails to include critical analysis and creative development of genres, aspects that are included in the Swedish curriculum. One of the articles presents two additional steps to the curriculum cycle which might supplement the first four steps including critical analysis and creative writing. The conclusion of this study states that the Swedish curriculum is clearly influenced by genre pedagogy and the curriculum cycle. It also states that the curriculum cycle needs to be supplemented by the two additional steps to match the curriculum of the Swedish school better.

"Jag tror att webb-distanskurs SFI är jättebra på mej… det är step by step, varje steg": En studie om hur elever beskriver för-och nackdelar med webbaserad SFI-undervisning och dess påverkan på deras lärande2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

D’anciens mots français du XVIIe siècle et le parler acadien.2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

French has not always been the sophisticated language that we know today. This language, which linguists and grammarians have worked hard to refine centuries after centuries, was not exported everywhere beyond the borders of France. The New France on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean was a witness to that. This Acadian dialect, spoken on the east coast of Canada and considered Old French, sparked our curiosity to study it more closely. That said, our work follows the French language exodus to Acadia and the difficulties encountered in safeguarding it. Thus, we will demonstrate, that in the Acadian Peninsula in New Brunswick, Canada, old words removed from the French dictionary are still used in the Acadians oral language. Our study focus on twenty old words by questioning 150 persons of different generations. The assumption was that the level of education would affect the percentage of use of old words.4As a result of our analysis, we found that even with the increase in education, some words are not ready to disappear from the spoken language. But openness to the world might force Acadians to adapt to a modernized language and abandon the old French words.

Combates entre la memoria y la historia de Chile: Conflictos sobre el pasado reciente2009In: Stockholm Review of Latin American Studies, ISSN 1654-0204, no 5Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [un]

The reestablishment of democracy in Chile has seen an intense debate about the events of the recent past, especially on the issue of human rights. From the very beginning, the Concertacion Government has been determined to discover the truth of the repression carried out by the national security forces with a series of commissions that have gathered the testimonies of victims and their relatives. These efforts have been resisted by conservative sectors linked to the dictatorship and the Armed Forces. There has been intense conflict in the media during the past 20 years about events that occurred during the rule of Salvador Allende and the Military Regime. In this regard, a great diversity of information has been produced which, together with the debate evoked, has enabled historians not only to rigorously and thoroughly reconstruct the operation of the state terror but also to explain how a significant sector of Chile’s civil society allowed that situation. This article presents, on one hand, different methodological tools in order to study the recent past and, on the other hand, the social discussion on how to do it.

Frustración lorquiana: Metáforas y símbolos en La Casa de Bernarda Alba2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to identify the construct of communicative competence promoted in three textbooks of Spanish as a foreign language and to determine its relationship with the emotional variable of anxiety. To achieve our research approaches, we conduct a qualitative investigation, employing the questionnaire analysis NAKIBAR 2004 developed by Joseba Ezeiza Ramos (2004). The results show that the three teaching materials analyzed satisfy the communicative teaching approach in various degrees. However, all three books are the externalization of the communicative model, with the specific purpose of supporting students to develop the ability to put in function communication processes. This strong tendency to use oral language can in some cases lead to feelings of anxiety.

Actitudes hacia las variedades del español bogotano: Un estudio sociolingüístico entre jóvenes de Ciudad Bolívaren Bogotá, Colombia.2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The general objective of our study is to investigate the attitudes expressed by young people from Bogotá towards the coexisting Spanish varieties. Specifically, it seeks to investigate the differences of linguistic attitudes from the categories of status and solidarity. The particular speech of young people in Ciudad Bolivar is studied as a factor of sociocultural identity. This study was conducted among a small sample of young people in Ciudad Bolívar, a popular suburb in Bogotá, Colombia. The sample consists of 38 informants between the ages of 11 to 24. A sociolinguistic survey consisting of five parts was used. In the first part, the sociodemographic data was collected, in the second part, a matched guise test was applied to evaluate the acctitudinal differences towards the varieties of Spanish, in the third part the informants answered in writing open questions. In the fourth part, a Likert scale of acceptability was applied to measure the degree of acceptability towards sociolinguistic items. The last part the informants express their acceptance of words and expressions in everyday speech contexts. The informants were divided into three groups: two groups of young students from public schools and a group of young people from a public park. The results of the analysis indicate that attitudes towards the standard variety are positive in formal and educational contexts. In informal contexts and comradeship contexts young people express very positive attitudes towards a non-standard youth variant. The results allow to recognize that this alternative variant of Spanish is characterized by the use of very particular words and expressions invented by the young people. The alternative variant is used as an element of identity and difference. Our research is an invitation to undertake more ambitious studies by expanding the population sample.

A comparative study of translation strategies applied in dealing with role languages.: A translation analysis of the video game Final Fantasy XIV2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Localisation is the process of taking a product and adapting it to fit the culture in question.

This usually involves making it both linguistically and culturally appropriate for the target audience. While there are many areas in video game translations where localisation holds a factor, this study will focus on localisation changes in the personalities of fictional characters between the original Japanese version and the English localised version of the video game Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn and its expansion Heavensward for PC, PS3 and PS4. With this in mind, specific examples are examined using Satoshi Kinsui's work on yakuwarigo, role language as the main framework for this study.

Five non-playable characters were profiled and had each of their dialogues transcribed for a

comparative analysis. This included the original Japanese text, the officially localised English text and a translation of the original Japanese text done by myself. Each character were also given a short summary and a reasoned speculation on why these localisation changes might have occurred.

The result shows that there were instances where some translations had been deliberately

adjusted to ensure that the content did not cause any problematic issues to players overseas. This could be reasoned out that some of the Japanese role languages displayed by characters in this game could potentially cause dispute among the western audience. In conclusion, the study shows that localisation can be a difficult process that not only requires a translator's knowledge of the source and target language, but also display some creativity in writing ability to ensure that players will have a comparable experience without causing a rift in the fanbase.

    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [en]

The goal of this study is to investigate Oshin, the main character of the NHK morning drama Oshin, and analyze her personality such that we may understand how women lived during the Meiji era. This drama was on air from 1983-1984 and recorded the highest rating ever in NHK morning drama history, 62.9%. In fields regarding women and media, there is an abundance of research done regarding Oshin, but comparatively, there are few studies in the field of literature. For the sake of tightening this gap, this paper will focus on researching Oshin. To understand what kind of person Oshin is, her personality will be examined using the MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) based on Carl G. Jung’s theory of psychological type. The MBTI aims to find universal features among all humans and to also identify the differences. Therefore, it could be considered as a proper method for this study.

In this study, we will analyze Oshin and three other characters who exerted large influences on her life. The MBTI will be used to estimate the personality type of each character. These personality types will be looked at in conjunction with the personalities of each character in the drama itself to see if there are correlations.

The results show that the features estimated from the MBTI and the features of each character in the drama were nearly identical. Using the analysis process, it was possible to look at the conflicting factors in personal relationships, the way people live, and even the author’s intentions.

Costrutti condizionali in italiano antico2010Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The present book is an attempt to provide a comprehensive description of conditional constructions in old Italian. The study is divided into four parts. In the first one corresponding to Chapter 1 – I discuss the theoretical and methodological principles underpinning my research. The focus is on the following aspects: i) the logical form of the expression if p, q; ii) the interaction between condi- tionality, hypothesis, time, tenses and mood; iii) the role played by the linguistic and pragmatic context. In the second part (Chapter 2), I illustrate the changes affecting conditionals in the transition from Latin to Italian, and I compare vulgarizations with original Latin texts. The third part (Chapters 3-8) is the core of the whole book. In Chapter 3, I propose a classification of Old Italian conditionals according to the following types: predictives, gnomics, counterfactuals, inferentials, conversationals, interrogatives, imperatives, anankastics, optatives. I also describe if sentences expressing meanings other than the condition- al one (e.g. factuality, temporality, concessivity, correlation, etc.), and discuss the semantic and syntactic features of the so-called “hypothetical comparative sentences”, introduced by the complex connective come se (‘as if’). In Chapter 4, I present an in-depth description of the several combinations of times, tenses and moods concerning conditional constructions. In Chapter 5 I dwell on aspects such as i) the syntactic placement of the protasis and apodosis in the textual chain; ii) the occurrence of the quantifier solo (‘only’); iii) the occurrence of epistemic markers (e.g. forse ‘maybe’, certamente ‘certainly’, etc.). In Chapter 6 I outline the functions of correlatives such as e ‘and’, sì ‘thus’, allora ‘then’, dunque ‘therefore’, which give conditionals their internal cohe- sion. Chapter 7 is an overview of the various connectives which can express a conditional meaning in Old Italian, such as qualora ‘whenever’, quando ‘when’, dove ‘where’, eccetto che ‘except if” (negative conditional). In Chapter 8, I extend the analysis to those syntactic structures which express a conditional relation even though they don’t have the form of a prototypical conditional construction if p, q. In the fourth part of the book (Chapter 9), I consider the use of conditionals in different text types (i.e. narrations, chronicles, scientific treatises, arguments, legal documents) to identify their communicative functions. In the conclusive remarks, I focus on the diachrony of Italian conditionals, stressing both continuity and discontinuity issues. The book ends with a small appendix containing data on starting if sentences (incipit) in Old Italian Poetry.

    Abstract [it]

In the recent years, in Italy there has been a quite important — and in some cases considerable — success of the so–called “migrant writers” who have chosen Italian as mean to represent their “other” identity or, more simply, to express their literary creativity. The result of this choice gives rise to the phenomenon of “linguistic hybridization” that is to say the creation of a multi–level language that is influenced by the mother tongue and culture of the author. On the basis of the models offered by Critical Discourse Stylistics, I try to define the textual factors and the stylistic features of the migration and postcolonial literature, and I dwell in particular on the ways in which the voices and points of view of the narrator and characters are expressed and represented in the text. Given the heterogeneity of the corpus of my investigation, I take into consideration the cultural differences of the authors, since in a critical perspective it is necessary to distinguish between writers from former Italian colonies (mothertongue and/or bilingual speakers) and migrant writers tout court, who have assimilated the Italian language and culture after having moved to Italy.

    Abstract [en]

This contribution deals with the various verbal morphology in the Italian counterfactual conditionals (the so-called periodo ipotetico dell'irrealtà). Starting from the inventory of all the possible combinations with the imperfetto indicativo that appear in these constructions, it will be shown that the variability of the mood and tense forms is not merely a matter of norm, but that there are clear-cut mechanisms which regulate such variability. Specifically, some peculiar combinations often marked as familiar or, simply, non-standard, are not always possible, but are depending on the actionality of the verbs (telic or atelic) being present in the protasis and/or the apodosis.

"Pegar primero: he ahí la ley": Estereotipos de género en una obra de Oscar Castro2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [es]

Ordförråd och ordkunskap: Språkets byggstenar2015Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Early Communicative Development in Swedish Children aged 12 to 30 months2016Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Research on child language acquisition confirms the importance of early language development for later language and literacy skills (Dickinson, Golinkoff & Hirsh-Pasek, 2010; Lee, 2011), and documents great individual variability in children’s acquisition rates (Fenson et al., 1994). Recent research has also widened the focus to include the impact of early gestures (e.g. Rowe & Goldin-Meadow, 2009). This study aims to investigate early communicative development in a sample of Swedish children based on parental report, using Swedish versions of the MacArthur-Bates CDI (Berglund & Eriksson, 2000; Eriksson & Berglund, 1999). In particular, variables such as early communicative gestures, receptive and productive vocabulary, and the syntactic/grammatical measure M3L (the Mean Length of Utterance score of the three longest utterances parents have heard their child say) are explored. The specific target group here is a subsample (from a total sample of 348) consisting of 128 children with complete records collected at six-month intervals (12, 18, 24 and 30 months of age). In the analysis, gender and children’s ability to use the pointing gesture at 12 months are used as grouping variables.

The analysis entails first looking at general trends in the data, and thereafter examining individual trajectories, especially extreme ones. Growth curve modelling is employed to describe trajectories of productive vocabulary development, first with gender as the grouping variable, and secondly, with the pointing gesture at 12 months of age. Since preliminary results show different variation in the response between boys and girls, different covariance structures are used for modelling. Moreover, banded covariance structure is utilized to take into account strong correlations between neighboring time points (12-18, 18-24, and 24-30 months). Testing fixed effects reveals highly significantly different slopes for girls and boys. The banded covariance structure is also used in the analysis of productive vocabulary with pointing as the grouping variable. Taking into account heterogeneity in the two groups, results also indicate highly significant differences in vocabulary growth for pointers vs. non-pointers. However, separate analysis of the two groups is needed before further conclusions can be made. It must also be stressed that the data comes from parental report, and observational knowledge of both parental and child gestures is lacking. However, the results of this study definitely contribute to the international body of knowledge with data from the Swedish context. Furthermore, results regarding early communication are of interest for parents, child- and healthcare personnel, as well as educational practitioners.

    Abstract [en]

This dissertation discusses the general and systemized methods of foreign language didactics that have been developed at different periods. The dissertation also looks at teaching methods (strategies, tools, materials, exercises, activities, assignments, etc.) and the theory behind these. For the purpose of this study, teachers at a number of schools in Sweden completed a questionnaire about methodology, teaching strategies, and theory in relation to classroom practice. The study demonstrates the teaching methods that are used and the frequency of their use, as well as the way in which they relate to methodology. The study also shows that most teachers who completed the questionnaire principally employ one methodology: the cognitive methodology – the communicative approach.

What lexicographers do with word formation2006In: Atti del XII Congresso Euralex (Torino 2006), Alessandria: Edizioni dell'Orso , 2006, p. 1115-1127Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In the past 50 years a relevant increase in the inclusion of word-formation data in Italian dictionaries has taken place. This development has proved very important to Italian users: in other words it has increased their linguistic awareness. Dictionary users are convinced to investigate WF mechanisms. What looking-up strategies are necessary in order to achieve this goal? This paper analyzes the development of the treatment of word-formation issues in Italian monolingual dictionaries published since the mid-1960s. A short profile of the dictionaries analysed will introduce the topic. The paper aims to find the different selections of affixes and components listed as headwords in the dictionaries analysed and the selections of items included in each entry (neologisms or 'traditional' words), in order to compare the different lexicographical techniques used.
