    Novyi razum Ol'gi Sedakovoi2016Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [ru]

Poiski Rusi nevidimoj : Kitezjskaja legenda v russkoj kul’ture. 1843-19402011Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This doctoral disseration examines the legend of the invisible city of Kitezh, its development and the role that it played in Russian culture between the years 1843 and 1940. It was during this period that the original folk legend was discovered by the Russian intelligentsia and transformed into a new myth about Russia. The legend is widely known and is the subject of a large number of publications and scholarly works. However, no research had yet been undertaken that presents a holistic account, which is what this dissertation attempts to do.

The Route Instrumental: A Historical Perspective, On the Use of Bare Instrumental Of Space in Eighteenth-Century Russian2013Inngår i: Slovo: Journal of Slavic Languages, Literatures and Cultures , ISSN 2001-7395, Vol. 54, s. 74-86Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This article deals with the use of the bare Instrumental case as a means of expressing spatial semantics in Russian literary sources from the eighteenth century. In modern Russian, the function of such Instrumental is somewhat limited to expressing a route or, rather, a physical setting through which a trajectory of motion lies. In the meantime, analysis of caseusage in works written during the period of transition from Middle Russian to the modern literary language makes it possibleto determine those spheres in which the bare Instrumental regularly appeared but has since grown obsolete. Major differences with the present-day situation are revealed, while the numbers demonstrate which uses of the bare Instrumental of space remained a language norm in the 1700s and also which competing case forms provide for syntactic variation.

Rysk rock och protest under Ukraina-krisen2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

The Concept of ’Selling/Buying’ in the Russian Linguistic Picture of the World: from standard to sub-standard2003Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [un]

The thesis belongs to the field of lexical semantics studies, associated with describing the Russian linguistic world-image. The research focuses on the universal situation of purchase and sale as reflected in the Russian lexical standard and sub-standard. The work deals also with subjects related to the sphere of social linguistics: the social stratification of the language, the structure of sub-standard, etc. The thesis is a contribution to the description of the Russian linguistic world-image as well as to the further elaboration of the conceptional analysis method. The results are applicable in teaching Russian as a foreign language, particularly in lexis and Russian culture and mentality studies.

Jewish Religion on Trial: Understanding Isaac Babel’s Short Story "Karl-Yankel"2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The subject of this thesis is the short story "Карл-Янкель" ("Karl-Yankel") by Russian-Jewish writer Isaac Babel (1894‒1940), published in 1931. The story depicts a trial following the cir-cumcision of a boy against his parents’ will, and thus directly addresses issues of high relevance at the time, namely the transformations of religious life in the early years of the Soviet Union. Firstly, I have analyzed the references to Jewish culture that appear in the story. Further on, drawing on research by other scholars, I have examined the shift of the traditional Jew into a Soviet Jew—a highly secular subject deeply involved in the socialist society and far removed from the traditions of the Pale of Settlement. Lastly, I have studied the narrator’s perspective, which, being far from objective, plays a major role in portraying the trial and is of key im-portance for understanding the transformation of Jewish life that occurred in the Soviet Union in the 1930s. At the end of the story, the narrator deprives the reader of the verdict and gives in-stead his attention to the circumcised boy. I argue that he thus focused on the future rather than on the conflict between tradition and secularism.

Linguistic uncertainty in meteorological forecastsfor Russian speaking audiences: A comparative study between televised weather forecastsand seasonal outlooks of the Northern Eurasian ClimateOutlook Forum2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

In order to make informed decisions, we need to resort to various types of information and we need to know how uncertain this information is. A commonly used source for information and subsequent action is weather forecasts. The communication of uncertainty in weather forecasts has been widely studied for English speaking audiences, resulting in a number of guidelines that practitioners can follow. For forecasts aimed at Russian speaking audiences there are very few, if no, such studies. The aim of this study is to extend previous research on the communication of uncertainties in weather forecasts to the Russian-speaking domain.

The underlying hypothesis for this study is that it should be possible to distinguish texts from different types of forecasts, with different inherent uncertainty, by analysing the linguistic uncertainty markers in the text-based section of these forecasts. If this is not the case, this could in a first step be solved by applying the recommendations in the available guidelines, in a second step the guidelines themselves might need to be extended to meet the needs of the practitioners.

To test the hypothesis, I analyse the expressed linguistic uncertainty in two different sources of meteorological information: weather forecasts and seasonal outlooks. The analysis shows that the original hypothesis can be confirmed: the differences between these two sources of information can be detected by analysing linguistic uncertainty markers. Further, the recommendations from the guidelines were met to a large extent, but both type of forecasts, in particular the seasonal outlooks, would benefit from a more consolidated approach. The analysis also shows that these guidelines could be improved by placing an increased emphasis on text-based forecasts, highlighting which linguistic means should be used for what purpose. The guidelines could be extended with language-specific best-practise examples. This way the guidelines would cater for a much larger user-base than they do at present.
