    Pappersmakulatur uppstår i tryckpressarna, men orsakerna finns i företagets alla funktioner. För ett framgångsrikt förbättringsarbete med att minska makulaturen krävs därför att all personal är engagerad. Examensarbetet utfördes på Bobergs Tryckeri AB i Falun, ett familjeägt företag med 60 anställda, som producerar personifierad direktreklam och blanketter. Syftet var att undersöka hur pappersmakulaturen kan minska och målet var att hitta orsaker samt ge förslag på åtgärder för att minska den. Genom intervjuer med personalen kartlades produktionssprocessen och utifrån det utarbetades förbättringsförslag. Exempel på förbättringsförslag är att kontinuerligt mäta och rapportera makulaturen, förbättra kommunikationen mellan avdelningarna och utveckla färgstyrningen. Litteraturstudier och kontakter med nyckelpersoner inom branschorganisationer och andra liknande företag, var till stor hjälp i arbetet. Fördjupningsdelen i projektet har sin grund i boken The Printer’s Guide to Waste Reduction av Tim Dalton.

    Utvärdering av ICC-profiler och profil-inställningar för HP Indigo Press 10002003Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis

    Det nystartade digitaltryckeriet Digaloo planerar att inom en snar framtid införa ICC-hantering i sitt arbetsflöde. Med anledning av detta har en studie utförts där antalet erfordrade ICC-profiler undersökts samt vilka akromatiska inställningar som bäst lämpar sig för tryckeriets HP Indigo Press 1000. Testtryckning utfördes på sex av Digaloos mest använda papperskvaliteter. Genom inläsning av testkartor har de olika papperskvaliteternas reproducerbara färgrymder åskådliggjorts. Grundat på resultatet från denna testtryckning framställdes ICC-profiler för valda papperskvaliteter. Dessa genererades med olika inställningar för akromatisk repro och TIC (Total Ink Coverage). Vid en andra testtryckning användes dessa ICC-profiler för konvertering av mellanton-, natt- och snöbilder, vilka trycktes på olika papperskvaliteter. Resultatet från den första testtryckningen visar att HP Indigo Press 1000 återger störst förgrymd på papperskvaliteten Silverblade Silk, tätt följd av Silverblade Art. De minsta färgrymderna reproduceras på Lessebo Linné Gultonat och Lessebo Linné Naturvit. Vid perceptuell bedömning av de olika bilderna blev resultatet att bäst tryckresultat uppnås med pappersspecifika ICC-profiler. Detta gäller dock endast i två av tre fall. Vid bedömning av bäst lämpad TIC ansågs den idag på Digaloo använda nivån som mycket dålig. Genom att antingen sänka eller höja denna nivå bedömdes tryckresultatet öka i kvalitet. Slutligen visar studien även att akromatik i form av UCR ger bäst bildåtergivning i mellanton- och nattbilder på de valda papperskvaliteterna. De olika graderna av GCR i snöbilder anses dock passa olika bra beroende på vilken papperskvalitet som används.

    När en grafisk profil för en spännande ny internationell webbtidning för ungdomar skall göras är det viktigt att tänka på hur färg och form påverkar våra känslor. Experiment med färg som har gjorts av ledande färgpsykologer och färgvetare som Goethe, Itten, Lüscher och Karl Ryberg bevisar att färg har en stor psykologisk påverkan på människan. Internet är ett väldigt effektiv kommunikationsmedium och för att kommunicera effektivt är det inte bara orden, utan även färgerna och formerna på webbsidorna som skall vara väl genomtänkta. Vilka färger kopplar ungdomar i Sverige och Chile ihop med vissa känslor? Vilka former kopplas ihop med samma känslor? Svaren på de frågorna sammanställdes och analyserades efter svaren på en enkät om färg och form som delades it till två högstadieskolor i Borlänge, Sverige och en i Santiago, Chile.

    Föreliggande rapport har som syfte att uttyda om det finns ett behov hos marknaden för företaget hp;s koncept, skylta.nu, som innebär att mindre butiker själva ska kunna framställa eget skyltmaterial. För att få underlag för rapporten har en undersökning om företaget hp och deras nya koncept gjorts samt en fördjupning i ämnet marknadsundersökning. Marknadsundersökningen utfördes i form av en enkät och djupgående intervjuer till målgruppen. Målgruppen är satt som mindre butiker i hela landet. För att marknadsundersökningen skall vara möjlig har målgruppen delats in i kluster, en galleria i Stockholm och en galleria i Borlänge. Enkäten är uppdelad i tre kategorier för att respondenten enkelt ska kunna förstå och fylla i den snabbt. Syftet med enkäten är att kunna se hur butiken får sitt skyltmaterial i dagsläget och om det finns behov av hp;s koncept. Antalet utdelade enkäter blev 130 stycken ( 80 i Stockholm och 50 i Borlänge) med ett bortfall på 26 stycken. Totalt insamlade enkäter blev 104 stycken. Resultatet visar att av dessa var 35 % positiva, 38% negativa och 27% var osäkra till hp;s koncept.

    It always has been a need for the abiltiy to create color proofs. When an error occurs late in the production process, it is allways complicated and difficult to correct the error. In this project, digital proofs been made and discussions have been held with several people in the printing industry, in order to examine how well excisting digital proofs, meet the demand of the market. And how close the digital proofs can come to the actual printsheat from the press. The study has been shown that the one thing that has had the most influence on the outcome for the quality of a digital proof, is the printshop operator’s knowledge about color management and proofing systems. Many advertising agencies in the graphic industry think rasterised proofs are not necessesary and expensive. Therefor they prefer a cheaper alternative, which doesn’t show colors as well as the rasterised proof, but well enough to be content with it. There are a good awareness concerning lack of communication between printshop, reproduction and advertising agency. Advertising agencies think that printshop rarely listen to what they have to say, while the printshop think that the advertising agency doesn’t understand what they are trying to tell them. The outcome of the printed proofs in this study can’t be representive for how good digital proofs are conducted in regular basis in the industry. The divergence between the print press sheat and the digital proof that was made was bigger than expected. This shows that implementation of ICC profiles in a color management flow, not alone is the answer to making perfect digital proofs. There are so many other issues that has to be examined, like color management software, measure tools and correct color management module. In order to make a perfect proof, you have to look at the whole picture. In the end, the human eye finally has the last word on wheather the proof is good or not.

    Personalized Communications: A Cross Media tool for the future2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Personalized communication is when the marketing message is adapted to each individual by using information from a database and utilizing it in the various, different media channels available today. That gives the marketer the possibility to create a campaign that cuts through today’s clutter of marketing messages and gets the recipients attention. PODi is a non-profit organization that was started with the aim of contributing knowledge in the field of digital printing technologies. They have created a database of case studies showing companies that have successfully implemented personalized communication in their marketing campaigns. The purpose of the project was therefore to analyze PODi case studies with the main objective of finding out if/how successfully the PODi-cases have been and what made them so successful. To collect the data found in the PODi cases the authors did a content analysis with a sample size of 140 PODi cases from the year 2008 to 2010. The study was carried out by analyzing the cases' measurable ways of success: response rate, conversion rate, visited PURL (personalized URL:s) and ROI (Return On Investment). In order to find out if there were any relationships to be found between the measurable result and what type of industry, campaign objective and media vehicle that was used in the campaign, the authors put up different research uestions to explore that. After clustering and merging the collected data the results were found to be quite spread but shows that the averages of response rates, visited PURL and conversion rates were consistently very high. In the study the authors also collected and summarized what the companies themselves claim to be the reasons for success with their marketing campaigns. The result shows that the creation of a personalized campaign is complex and dependent on many different variables. It is for instance of great importance to have a well thought-out plan with the campaign and to have good data and insights about the customer in order to perform creative personalization. It is also important to make it easy for the recipient to reply, to use several media vehicles for multiple touch points and to have an attractive and clever design.

    This Degree Project is a cooperativ work with the advertising agency PAX in Falun and the industrial company Remote Control, who constructs and sells actuators for the global market. The assignment concerns bringing out a graphic profile, or with another expression a Design Management, for Remote Control AB graphic materials. Remote Control AB has a quality certification ISO 9000 and is working with, when this report was wrote, an environment certification ISO 14001. The Company has been paid attention to Internet and other media. The supervisors are familiar to that Design Management is a soon coming competition element, like quality and environment management. This Degree project contains research, analysis and the construction of graphic material. The research has been committed most of the time to trace the customer, the market and the competitor, because its the most important phase. It’s also important looking at competitor’s way of working with marketing management, so you can separate them from the own company.

    This project was performed at Rochester Institute of Technology to get more understanding and knowledge about AM and FM screenings similarities and differences with considerations of the mottle. By designing a test form conformed to the specific measurements and printing it on Heidelberg's Sunday 2000 press, the project group has evaluated the questions that already existed and the ones that occurred during the project. Hence the first press run left some unexpected phenomenon therefore another press run was performed. Measurements were performed and graphs produced in Excel. The project group evaluated the results and from that able to establish facts and draw conclusions. It has been a great experience for the project group and they have learnt a lot.

    The objective of this thesis has been to investigate the approval process for an image. This investigation has been carried out at four catalog-producing companies and three companies working with repro or printing. The information was gathered through interviews and surveys and later used for evaluation. The result of the evaluation has shown that all businesses are very good at technical aspects but also that the biggest problem they have is with the communication. The conclusion is that businesses need a clear construction for the image process. This will minimize the communication problems and make the process effective.

    Vid framställningen av papper för tryckindustrin som använder rullat papper används olika typer av kartonghylsor. Hylsans uppgift är att bära papperet från pappersbruket till kunden. Vidare är det hylsan som ligger till grund för att papperet skall vara körbart och rullbart i tryckpressen. På bruken och tryckerierna utsätts hylsorna för stora påfrestningar vilket gör att hylskvaliteten är av största vikt. I detta examensarbete har ett antal hylskvaliteter avsedda för pappersindustrin utretts. Utredningen omfattades av att undersöka vilka variationer som existerade i dimension, styrka och fukt hos vissa utvalda hylskvaliteter. Syftet var att påvisa den faktiska kvaliteten hos dessa hylsor och utreda om kraven som finns anvisade för dessa uppfylldes. Vidare mål var att kartlägga existerande lagringsklimat vid pappersbruket som använder hylsorna för att fastställa om förhållandena är acceptabla.

    In this degree project a study of the importance of a graphic identity to companies has been done. A questionnaire among small companies in Dalarna has been made. From this, three sets of graphic profile-program have been formed and these are suitable for new companies. Finally a practical application has been made on Greenfield in Mora, a graphic profile has been designed. To cause an identity is to prove that someone or something exists by individualizing and distinguish. Every individual or company has its qualities or charasteristics. The way to a desirable identity is going by a corporate identity-program that contains the companies strategies, people, products, buildings, trademarks, graphic design. To create an identity a well considered strategy is needed, where all members of the company are involved. This will lead to a positive image and means for an efficient market communication. The identity of the company is that the company wish what the company/product will stand for, but the image is what the market think about the company/product. The surrounding world will be convinced that the company is a reliable producer or deliverer. The company vill also be regarded as useful and responsable, profitable as an object or partner and a good place of work. Today, trademarking is the most important carrier of identity for a company. A trademark, like a word, a picture or a slogan, will distinguish a product from the others. What is needed to build up a strong trademark? How can a trade mark be developed to an advantage? To get a lot of people in the same direction clear guidlines are needed. Usually you focused on graphic design, especially the symbols and marks of the companies. The results are presented on a graphic profile, documented in a graphic manual.

    The following degree project deals with the production of an ICC-profile, this in the form of producing ICC-profiles for VTAB Backa. The company previously had their own profile but they weren’t satisfied, so earlier this year they started using the TU standard profile, but they also wanted a complement to this in form of a profile created for solely their printing press. The separation settings used when creating the new profiles were based on information from TU and their profile. Two basic profiles were created and then edited to obtain a better result. The test printings made with the edited profiles showed that the less adjustments that are made, the better. It was also discovered that the TU standard profile eliminates the highlight tones whiles the new profiles are somewhat darker. VTAB Backa has at the end of this degree project desided to conduct more test printings before making their decision.

    This thesis investigated if a combination of increased under colour removal (decreasing the total ink limit), normal and increased density and modern FM-screening could be used to provide a visually better print on uncoated and coated paper in comparison with AM-screening using the same conditions. Two different test groups (one with graphic background, the other with no graphic background) were asked to a visually assess the quality of the prints presented in a pair comparison using a reference image. The results show that the FM-screening did not obtain any significant visual difference in comparison with AM-screening, regardless of paper types and density levels. In general however, prints on coated paper were graded higher.

    Universitetsservice US-AB är ett tryckeri som specialiserat sig på akademiska trycksaker såsom avhandlingar, visitkort samt studentlitteratur. Sedan en tid tillbaka har företaget arbetat mot ISO 9001 standarden. De dokument som styr standarden har hittills förvarats i pärmar på de lokala kontoren. Detta har visat sig vara ineffektivt då det är lätt hänt att pärmarna bara blir stående och de anställda på grund av det inte hålls uppdaterade. Syftet med detta examensarbete är att göra dessa dokument mer användarvänliga genom programmet AutoFlowChart från Netforms. Arbetet resulterade i en HTML-sida som Universitetsservice US-AB kan använda i sitt intranät, vilket gör att medarbetarna får snabb och lätt åtkomst till alla dokument. Detta medför även att när dokumentationen uppdateras på intranätet får samtliga fyra kontor direkt åtkomst till uppdatering. Dokumenten skulle även utformas så att de blir mer lättlästa och får ett trevligare utseende. En fördjupning gjordes därför inom kvalitetsstyrning för att få en förståelse över hur dokumenten bör hanteras och utformas.

    Our employer, Gaddad, is a tattoo and piercing community that was created in 2006 with the basic idea to make it easier for people to get in touch with the tattoo artists and piercers from all over Sweden. With the homepage’s popularity at 2009 they decided to expand with the news page Inkzine. 2011 they contacted us with a plan to expand the homepage to Europe and then merge their two sites under the name Inkzine. The goal of this project was to create design suggestions for Gaddad / Inkzine that both the administration and the current users liked and would consider implementing on the website. In order to evaluate the current design and our suggestions we decided to use two questionnaires . The first questionnaire evaluated the current design to provide us with information for the redesign. The second questionnaire evaluated our new suggestions. With these questionnaire we also carried out an analysis to see the differences in opinions among the users and also between the administration and the users. We also investigated other community homepages, company homepages that had been internationalized, and other tattoo homepages. To see what others had done to adapt to the international market and to investigate the design of tattoo homepages. We also did literary studies in redesign and internationalization, in order to obtain a theoretical foundation for our work. The results of the investigation of other homepages showed that in order to perform an internationalization of a web site no major changes to the looks were necessary, only linguistic changes. The results of our questionnaires showed that users had in most cases put the majority of their votes on

    Abstract [sv]

    Conqueror for Indigo is production treated with an active chemical to maximize the ink adhesion. ArjoWiggins has found that another chemical, the candidate compound, would improve the properties of the paper. ArjoWiggins therefore wish to replace the current compound. To strengthen the patent requirements for ink adhesion needs to be determined. A theory is developed to why chemicals with certain properties maximize the ink adhesion. Experiments are performed but the results are inaccurate. The reason for ink adhesion is still unknown. Paper treated with the candidate compound is produced in a production trial and the paper evaluated. The paper shows decreased ink adhesion compared to paper treated with current compound but gives higher whiteness, longer shelf life and the formulation is preferred by the mill due to health and safety reasons.

    Sten Jonsson wants to start a production of an advertising catalogue for small companies in Sweden. A catalogue where the advertisingcost is so low that most of the companies can afford to participate. The companies who will advertise should be manufacturing companies in trades of carpentry, sheet metal workshops, forging workshops and engineering workshops. The catalogue will facilitate for the manufacturer to reach the costumer without any middleman. Without a middleman creates a possibility for an opinion about the product at the same time as the price can be held low. A catalogue of this type would benefit the marketing of the companies at the same time as it would generate an occasion for innovations. The possible target groups are property companies, construct companies and farmers. A market research has been carried out contained a postal interview and a phone interview. The market research carried out to get an understanding in what the companies think about the idea but also to see if the companies are in interest of advertise in the catalogue. Unfortunately the market research became unusable when only three of thirty companies comment the idea and two of them wanted to meet for a further visit. In relation to the market research a deeper study in market research, in which essential parts for the project, was made. A dummie has been done to show the design of the catalogue. A calculation has also been done to get an understanding in what the project would cost to start.

    Abstract [en]

    This research focuses on the issue of how to best structure text on a Smartphone screen. The factors involved in this research are text size, white space, text and line lengths, serif and sans serif fonts, pictures in text and contrast.  The methodology of our research is based on a normative Swedish able-bodied person, as well as on relevant literature, personal analyses, interviews with people in the trade, an online survey, and a test performed with a focus group. The results are that a text written for Smartphones is best structured with: several paragraph divisions made with blank lines, with pictures where the picture has an informational purpose, and text length based on category of subject. The picture should be placed above the body text. Longer texts should be set with a scroll-function. Contrast is of great importance on mobile phones as texts can be read properly even when set in negative. In addition, using serif or sans serif is of no importance. According to the results both serif and sans serif can be read without difficulties on a Smartphone. Text size should be slightly enlarged in relation to the default settings on the mobile device. Since word division is not supported on screen, short words are recommended when possible to prevent a highly uneven right end.

    This degree project was intendet to construct and design packaging for beauty care. At the request of AssiDomän Frövi the project group were instructed to innovate creative packages made of their cardboard Frövi Bright. Three different packages have been developed. Two of them are for child care products and one package is for several bath products. These results show that there are possibilities to create creative and different packages of the cardboard Frövi Bright. The report also enters deeply into the special qualities of Frövi Bright and studies of packaging design.

    The Lugnetgymnasium in Falun has a graphic education that supplies a color printer, which is available for the students in their hall. The printer is a Ricoh AFC 6513 and it is a model that can handle variable data. It was bought in the autumn of 2002. The teachers of the graphic education want to make use of the variable data function and procure a variable data software. The purpose of this project is to evaluate variable data software’s, so that the most suitable choice of software can be made for the graphic education. To be able to make this choice, criterions has been made what the variable data software will fulfil. Different software’s of variable data has been examined and a summary was made which tells what software that fulfils all the criterions. The software’s that seemed appropriate for the graphic education were PrintShop Mail and Personalizer-X. Adecision which one of these software’s that will be purchase was made by the teachers on the graphic education. Tests and a more detailed study on the software’s have been done. The information has later been presented for the teachers. They made a decision, which were Personalizer-X. After this decision, an easier manual for Personalizer-X was made. The purpose with the manual is that the students on the graphic education, quickly and easy can get started with the use of variable data.

    The project Design analysis and proposals of plastic screw caps in Australia was performed at Högskolan Dalarna in cooperation with University of Western Sydney, Australia. The Swedish company Tetra Pak, in Lund, were assigner for the project that was performed 2006-2007. The commission was to do a survey about the packages for non-carbonated drinks in Australia. The bottles had to be plastic, able to open in one step and with focus on the caps. The project has result in design analysis and a new proposal of a plastic screw cap for the Australian market. Six bottles were choosen and they were all testet on 20 consumers each with a Likert-scale test. The result from the test and the survey underlied the work with a proposal of a new design. The most important qualities for a optimal opening is: a tamper that is easy to break and also guarantee that is not been opened before, wide and soft grip, ergonomics, easy to close and that is good looking.

    AssiDomän Frövi board mill has in cooperation with students from Graphic Technology at the University of Dalarna a degree project that involves developing package solutions in carton material from AssiDomän Frövi. This year the basic condition was to use the weights 270g/m2, 300g/m2 and 330g/m2 and choose between Frövi Bright, Frövi Light and Frövi Carry. The packages were supposed to be in the segments industrial products, chocolate/sweets and beauty products/cosmetics. Two packages were produced in the segments industrial products and beauty products/cosmetics. The first package, produced in the industrial segment, contains textile color and templates and the second package is a gift package and contains nail polish. The investigation part of the project deals with how the packages today are fit for rheumatics in opening purpose.

    Voyage är en fiktiv nyskapad resetidning vars formgivning har tagits fram efter en visuell studie av layouten hos Sveriges resetidningar Vagabond, Allt om Resor, Res och Escape 360°. Layoutens syfte är att visa hur man kan sticka ut och bryta mot den vanliga trenden för att fånga nya läsare inom detta tidningssegment. Den nytänkande layouten ska attrahera de mer aktiva och äventyrliga resenärerna. De existerande resetidningarna är alla uppbyggda på ett strukturerat vis, vissa rörigare än andra. Med den nya tidningen Voyage valdes att skapa en layout som medvetet är tänkt att vara rörig, fast med en harmoniserande rörighet. Under rörigheten finns ändå en underliggande struktur som håller uppslagen samman. De andra tidningarna skapar en rörighet genom varierande layout av bilder och text. Voyage skapar rörighet genom dekorativa element.

    The digital printing market is changing faster now than before and the ability to adjust to new situations has become more importat to a printing company. An efficient internal communication is essential. At Elanders Digitaltryck a decision was made in august 2002 to look over the shift working system for the printer operators. In this paper, an investigation of the possibilities to change the existing system to a better one was made. The project resultet in four different timetabels. The construction was based on theoretical studies and an analysis of the current situation at the workplace. The analysis showed that a strong resistanse against a change of the working hours exists among the workers and that this should be considered before a decision is made. An analasys of the printers counters shows that they are used more efficient during shorter shift periods compared to the longer ones. A closeer look at the abcense due to sickness shows that it is relatively high but no connection between abcense and working hours could be made. Working hours is a sensitive issue and should be treated with care. It is important that the workers are well informed and preferly involved in the development of a new timetable.

    Abstract [en]

    Newspaper printing can be controlled by visual gray balance assessment, a procedure which is widespread among newspaper printers in Sweden. In sheet-fed offset today, there is no fast and efficient way to process control the sheet-fed offset-press during production without using advanced online-systems. The control patches which are used in sheet-fed offset during the production often lack the possibility to assess gray balance, these usually work to determine full-tone ink densities and dot gain. The first objective of this study has been to evaluate the subjective quality experience (and objectively measurable factors) of print, where the quality control has been carried out based on gray balance control in sheet-fed offset. The second objective was to implement gray balance as a practical tool for the printers for a fast visual quality control in a sheet-fed offset printing. The study has shown that: 1) The gray balance can be used as a control parameter for control of quality in sheet fed offset. 2) A faster start-up and a more reliable print quality (fewer variations during production) can be achieved. The printer and the customer have access to a tool which facilitates communication, generates fewer misunderstandings, leads to less product returns and less production losses. With this tool it is easier for the printer to visually detect deviations without time consuming physical measurements. Also troubleshooting is easier; printers know instantly where the deviation is and can attend to it immediately.

    Ett projektarbete i samarbete Hold Norge Rent, Norsk Resirk och Skiskolenes bransjeførbund i syfte att skapa enkel, intressant och lättförståelig miljöinformation för barn som är på semester i de Norskafjällen. Information bestående av en 12-sidig målarbok med miljövännerna Truls, Trude, Älgen Egiloch Haren Harald tillsammans med ett antal hjälpsamma lämmlar. Tillsammans lär de sig hur man sorterar sopor. I tillägg finns en frågesport med elva frågor om sopsortering, en samlingsplatsskylt och ett diplom. Alla illustrationer är gjorda efter samma manér, detta för att ge hela konceptet ett enhetligt intryck. Fördjupningen handlar om pedagogiska illustrationer för barn. Focus har lagts på barns bildförståelse och hur de tolkar och uppfattar illustrationer.

    Abstract [en]

    Black liquor gasification–combined cycle (BLGCC) is a new technology that has the potential to increase electricity production of a chemical pulping mill. Increased electricity generation in combination with the potential to use biomass (e.g. bark, hog fuel) more efficiently can result in increased power output compared to the conventional Tomlinson-boiler. Because the BLGCC enables an integrated pulp and paper mill to produce excess power, it can offset electricity produced by power plants. This may lead to reduction of the net-CO2 emissions. The impact of BLGCC to offset CO2 emissions from the pulp and paper industry is studied. We focus on two different plant designs and compare the situation in Sweden and the US. The CO2 emissions are studied as function of the share of recycled fibre used to make the paper. The study shows that under specific conditions the production of “CO2-free paper” is possible. First, energy efficiency in pulp and paper mills needs to be improved to allow the export of sufficient power to offset emissions from fossil fuels used in boilers and other equipment. Secondly, the net-CO2 emission per ton of paper depends strongly on the emission reduction credits for electricity export, and hence on the country or grid to which the paper mill is connected. Thirdly, supplemental use of biomass to replace fossil fuel inputs is important to reduce the overall emissions of the pulp and paper industry.

    The aim of the project is to develop a tool for a management system at the advertising agency of Confetti. The company has during a longer period of time felt a need of introducing a quality and environmental system but have a lack in resources of knowledge, time and money. Their goal is to have a concrete documentation which describes their quality policy and the function of the activity. The work has been performed by mapping and analyzing the processes of the company according to the process model with focus on one pilot process. New routines have been developed and documented in a management system. Confetti would like their management system to fulfil the ISO-standard so that they eventually in the future can be certified. Therefore a literature study has been done according to management systems and standards. The project has been directed to fulfil the ISO-standards demands for a quality management system. It has resulted in the creation of a comprehensible and userfriendly management system which includes a routine model and new routines for the pilot process of PDF-handling. A oneyear- plan has been created to facilitate for the continuos development of the quality management system at Confetti. The new quality implementations demands investment, why a budget has been calculated showing profitability. Confetti has to continue the development of the management system very soon. They ought to create an analyzis of the companys current situation and choose the processes that they themeselves consider most important or easiest to improve. A management system will not operate by it self, it needs maintenance and development.

    Color management has become more common now than ever in the graphic trade. Calibration and charcterization are words that are mentioned very often when it comes to controlling colors and when you want a printed picture to look the same as an original photograph. The problem is that there are not so many people that has the knowlegde about this subject. Even if a printer supports color management it is not sure that the result is going to be satisfied and that a printed picture is going to look the same as the original. The printers which were used were Hp DeskJet 970 Cxi, Xerox Docu Color 12 and Agfa Chromapress 50i. The theory of color, colour management and the equipment which were used are described in the first stage. The second stage describes calibration and characterization of monitors, scanners and printers. Finally the result of created ICC-profiles is set by visual comparision of a photographs original colours and a scanned and printed photograph. The results of calibration and characterization were varying a lot. Agfa Chromapress 50i was the only printer which could produce a succesful calibration. Agfa Chromapress 50i and Xerox DocuColor 12 gave the best results when comparing original photographs with printed pictures if they were separated with ICC-profiles. ICC-profiles created for Hp DeskJet 970 Cxi achieved undesirable effects. This was the only printer that gave a bad result both with and without ICCprofiles. The reason for this miserable result can depend on the printers unability to fully support color management.

The aim with this project is to strengthen the identity of EM-loppet, by making a clear and unified profile. The project has been accomplished by studying literature, searching information on the Internet and via personal contacts. The graphic manual of EM-loppet and examples of its applications are enclosed.

    The project group is participating in a measuring project that is a cooperation between CIT Energy Management AB, the Measuring unit of Chalmers and College of Dalarna.The results from the measurements will be put together and presented in a brochure. When designing the brochure a great deal of planning has been made how to attract the targetgroup. To make the contents of the brochure more attractive, which mainly will contain text, a lot of images with a symbolic substance have been used. To keep the brochure together it has been divided into five chapters that each has been given one specific colour. The colours are consistent on initials, headlines and images. At the moment the results of the measurements are not yet ready and the text for the brochure is not possible to complete now. This project is expected to finish in the fall when all the measurements have been compiled.

    Detta examensarbete är genomfört på uppdrag av kundansvariga på Banverkets Marknadsavdelning. Avdelningen ansvarar bland annat för samordning av marknadskontakter och avtalssystem rörande bannätets trafikering. Arbetet syftar till att utreda och beskriva det optimala sättet för kundansvariga för kundsegmentet Järnvägsföretag, att nå ut med intern kundrelaterad information. Förutom en grundlig förstudie av den nuvarande arbetsrutinen genomfördes även jämförelser med liknande rutiner hos fem andra stora organisationer. Idéer från dessa organisationer har anpassats till Banverkets egna förutsättningar och de identifierade behoven. Utredningens resultat är tio förbättringsförslag som syftar till att stärka serviceinriktningen, stärka kundansvarigas roll internt samt att skapa en helhetssyn på kunden. En viktig uppgift är att visa kundnyttan av Banverkets handlande och hur kundansvariga samarbetar med kunderna för att öka järnvägstrafiken. I förlängningen förväntas åtgärderna effektivisera organisationen och motivera medarbetare att göra ett bra jobb. För att åstadkomma resultat och hålla informationsarbetet levande är det viktigt att vara tydlig i sitt budskap, sprida rätt och tillräcklig intern marknadsinformation samt att skapa fasta rutiner.

En redesign av webbplatsen www.champagneclub.com har resulterat i ett luftigt och sofistikerat utseende med god läsbarhet. Webbplatsen är lättnavigerad och ger ett inbjudande intryck för besökaren. Webbplatsen ska hela tiden uppdateras och hållas aktuell med nyheter kring de tillhörande barerna, andra aktiviteter som medlemmar blir inbjudna till samt nya tastingnots som är The Rickard Juhlin Champagne Clubs specialitet.     Abstract [en]

    This degree project was performed at M-real Technology Centre in Örnsköldsvik. The perpose was to investigate the differences in gloss and gloss variations between chemical and ground toner and different paper grades in electrophotographic prints. Gloss is a property that gives the impression of a higher quality of a product. Therefore it is of great importance to accomplish high gloss in advertising print. A test chart was printed on three different uncoated paper grades on three different printers. Thereafter, gloss, gloss variation, surface topography, print mottle and density were measured. A visual evalution was also performed. A multivariate analysis was acheived of the data in order to find correlations between the measured variations. The results showed that paper grades with large surface roughness gave more variations in surface topography and gloss variations (both visual and measured) in print. A rough surface also gave more print mottle. Ground toner gave more surface topography variations and mottle which increased with the amount of silicone used.

    This degree project contains a theoretical and a practical part about magazine design. Literature about the subject’s typography and magazine design has been studied and put into practice on the professional journal Ingenjören. Besides of that a study about the history of magazine typography for the last fifty years has been done. Typography and other design factors are important for the magazine to be readable and gives at the same time the magazine an identity of its own, which has become more and more important throughout the last decades. The result of this degree project is a new design for Ingenjören, a design that agrees more with how the journal want to be considered. A new template, a dummy and a manual have been produced. A decision of a board meeting of Ingenjörsförbundet in September is now what remains for the new design to become a reality.

Through a magazine study and a targetgroup survey we have found a magazine concept and suggestions for the magazine content. A digital 96-page prototype has been created. The feedback from Anders Neuman-Östberg, the experienced editor in chief of the Swedish boardsport magazine Transistion gives the project report the needed credibility. The overall response from all the people involved in the making of this prototype has been positive. We can see a market demand for a magazine like Werv and hope that we can find a way to publish it in the future. In this degree project we haven't looked into the economic sustainability and therefore we can't say if it's feasible. Further investigations are needed before Werv can be published.

    Abstract [en]

    The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the print performance of some of the new most promising, cost effective absorbent pigments specialised for inkjet coatings on the market in a continuous drive to find an alternative to silica. The target was a lower production cost for ArjoWiggins inkjet products, OMD 01 and OMD 02. Five absorbent pigments are being evaluated through measuring the qualities of the coating mix itself, visual evaluations of print performance and physical testing of the coated paper. Pigments 1,2 and 3, which all are said to be tailored for inkjet coatings, did not reach the print performance needed for an OMD 01 and OMD 02 equal, due to severe bleed and feathering identified especially on the Epson 950 printer. They are therefore currently not seen as viable formulations. A blend of 50% pigment 5 and 50% silica had excellent print performance as OMD 01 and OMD 02 equivalents and is therefore recommended as a potential alternative to 100% silica. It is of the company’s interest to find a more cost effective solution to their inkjet coatings, and a 50/50 blend of Pigment 5 will save the company more than 35 000 euro per year.

    When using the digital halftone proofing systems, a closer print match can be achieved compared to what earlier could be done with the analogue proofing systems. These proofing systems possibilities to produce accurate print match can as well lead to producing bad print matches as several print related parameters can be adjusted manually in the system by the user. Therefore, more advanced knowledge in graphic arts technology is required by the user of the system. The prepress company Colorcraft AB wishes to control that their color proofs always have the right quality. This project was started with the purpose to find a quality control metod for Colorcraft´s digital halftone proofing system (Kodak Approval XP4). Using a software who supports spectral measuring combined with a spectrophotometer and a control bar, a quality control system was assembled. This system detects variations that lies out of the proofing system´s natural deviation. The prerequisite for this quality control system is that the tolerances are defined with consideration taken to the proofing systems natural deviations. Othervise the quality control system will generate unnecessecary false alarms and therefore not be reliable.

    This degree project illustrates newsprint and waterless offset. A new news press was introduced at Drupa-00, Cortina from KBA, which is the first news press dedicated the waterless technique. With actual statistics from the company in question an investigation was made whether their production fits this press. It came out in the investigation that the production of the company, from statistics, fits this press very good. A table was made where different timeschedules were accounted for the new press, with semi- and full automatic plate changing for present and to be added papers. The waterless technology is compared to conventional offset with the difference that the plate is based on a sort of laminatetechnology. Like conventional plates this plate has a base made of aluminium. Lightsensitive photopolymer is united as a layer or coat on top of the aluminium and a 2µm thin oleophobic siliconlayer is applied on top of the photopolymer. Considering the print, the waterless method has a higher qualitygrade than conventional offset. No water is emulsified in the ink, and therefore the printed dot gets a higher density. The loss of dampening solution and higher tack of the ink gives sharper dots. This makes the colourspace bigger why a greater range of colours can be printed. The loss of dampening solution gives a more stable dotgain, which contributes to that a higher screen can be used. The disadvantage is that the plate can't do as many rotations as the conventional plate. A waterless plate makes around 100 000-500 000 rotations before it needs to be removed owing to type- and manufacturer of the plate. The plate is also slightly more sensitive and expensive than conventional plates, around 1,4 - 1,7 × aluminium printing plates. A waterless system can be installed in a conventional printing press by degrees and when large editions are being printed a cooler needs to be installed in the oscillationrollers of the press, since an increase in temperature can make the oleophobic parts of the plate oleophilic. The Cortina is however equipped with a temperature controlsystem at the beginning. To avoid picking, caused by the tacky ink, a blanket with a high “quick release” should be used.
