    Abstract [en]

    This report aims at investigating how traffic management can help disabled and elderly. Although more than 800,000 people travel with SL every day, many elderly and disabled find it difficult to travel using public transportation. Through interviews, different associations representing different disabilities have reported that they feel a lack of information and they feel insecure. Many choose not to travel with public transportation. The investigation has resulted in two different solutions, the advantages and disadvantages of the different solutions are discussed as well. A WEFEEL bracelet that communicates with both the passenger and the bus driver via signals to facilitate the perception that the correct bus is on its way, signal if the traveller has a need for assistance, etc. The second solution proposal WEFIND is ground plates with diodes in the form of arrows that show the path when traffic disturbances occurs and redirects the passengers. Both solutions work for many different groups and also for travellers without special needs (arrows). The solutions take into consideration the environmental issue but have not been further investigated in terms of instalment and economy. The conclusion is that the suggested solutions can help travellers feel safer and thus travel more using public transport.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this thesis is to establish a functional program for an eco-cycle building where people can bereached with knowledge of sustainable development. The background to this is that the municipality ofBorlänge approved a plan program with the vision of creating a new, climate neutral district and therebybecome a precursor for sustainable construction in the region. For instance, the functional program is meantto investigate the background and the prerequisites that existed. In the municipality’s plan program, thebuilding is described to have an educational function for the district and for Borlänge; a place which focuseson practical demonstrations and education for students and residents in recycling issues for energy, waterand waste/material in a comprehensible and compelling way. The eco-cycle building is planned to beestablished near the new school, with classes from 6 to 9, to make a cooperation possible.Requests from the municipality is that the eco-cycle building can work like a hub in the new district, butalso become a new place of interest and put Borlänge on the map for sustainable construction. Sustainableconstruction includes resource management, minimized energy use and renewable energy sources, but alsothat resources like energy, waste and water circulate in an eco-cycle. Theory has been obtained fromliterature focusing on how we should build our houses and cities if we want to join and create a sustainablesociety.Part of the purpose of this thesis was to explore how to disseminate information on environmental andcircular issues in an educational way. The theoretical part of the thesis is therefore focusing on selected partsof education obtained from previous research in children and youth learning for sustainable development,since studies show that it is important that children learn about these issues early in life. Education forSustainable Development is an important prerequisite for achieving the sustainability goals set by the UNuntil 2030. Upcoming generations must learn a sustainable way of life right from the start while the existingpopulation must drastically change their lifestyle.In order to gather empiricism, interviews were held with people who have been involved in the planningwork with the new district. It turned out that there were former driving spirits who introduced the idea of theeco-cycle building, but that it doesn’t currently are the major priority in the ongoing work with the newschool and housing.Engaging the users at an early stage provides better conditions for achieving a result that is effective andsatisfying for all parties. The theory of design dialogues has therefore been studied to demonstrate theimportance of a good dialogue to quickly identify needs and develop ideas in design work.The result of the thesis, the functional program, can be seen as a draft on conceptual level with features andexpressions that can be applied to a building of this kind, and an inspiration for continued work. In thefunctional program, our interpretations form how the eco-cycle building would meet the requests andfunctions that’s been requested in the plan program, in order to benefit as much as possible in themunicipality's future work with the building.Conclusions are that there are no precursors of the eco-cycle building as a concept. Despite a large numberof sources of inspiration from various aspects, no example was found that combines all the aspects we havethe ambition to develop for this building. The eco-cycle building as a concept could play an important rolefor how to handle sustainable issues in a district or in a whole city. However, further work is required toinvestigate how the building should be run and managed, as well as more extensive studies of whichtechnical solutions to apply. Further work is also required to optimize the building for the future location,and the size of the building that are appropriate. There is a great interest in the building from variousparticipants in Borlänge, but to implement the idea of the eco-cycle building, one or more people need toembrace the project with the commitment that previously existed in the organization.

    Abstract [en]

    Water damages in buildings cost more than 6 billion SEK per year in Sweden. It is a figure

    that the insurance companies want and are working for to decrease.

    Sweden are constantly building new constructions, today's technology is a much more

    advanced one then it was in the past and the need for greater knowledge is a requirement to

    not build errors. The materials and the construction methods become more and more complex

    by time. Now days the materials interact with each other and are built in inside the walls

    where it is not visible if there is a leak. More professionals should collaborate with each other

    because it’s more complex there are more laws and rules that must be followed. The artisans

    must be trained theoretically today to gain knowledge and understanding of their job.

    The aim with this work was primarily to investigate how the theoretically under the laws and

    rules should be built and how it actually performed in practice.

    The report deals with water damage that occurs inside the villas. The theoretical laws and

    industry regulations examined in this report will be the newest versions that apply today.

    The method that was used in this work is essentially meetings and contact with the people in

    the industry. The people who will be interviewed are plumbers, vocational school, adult

    education, insurance, tilers, carpet layers, materials dealers other companies in the industry.

    Cooperation with Länsförsäkringar Dalarna AB will take place throughout the project.

    The result of the surveys was that there is a gap between what is theoretically being carried

    out and how it is carried out in practice. Since the law says it should be built so that there will

    be no water damage, but it still occur water damages. It suggests that there is a problem

    between theory and practice. The problems for the artisans include stress, industry

    regulations, coordination, customers and price etc.

    Industry rules problem is that they can be misinterpreted and are too academically written.

    Coordination between the different professional groups is too poor, provide training to the

    carpenters so that they have more knowledge about plumbing fitter profession.

    The conclusion of this work is that there is a gap between what is theoretically being carried

    out and how it is carried out in practice. Industry rules must be even better written and

    designed.

    One example is clear that there is a problem with how the industry rules are designed, is that

    most interview participants in this survey felt that ROT rules were too vague and difficult to

    read.

    Very many also believe that ROT rules do not work as they should in the practice as it is in

    practice very difficult to motivate the customer economical to build entirely by industry

    regulations. The renovation work can be very large and expensive changes to achieve the

    industry standard rules. Then craftsmen use deviations that customers do not have much

    knowledge of and what they mean.

    Energy Efficient Renovation Strategies for Swedish and Other European Residential and Office Buildings2017Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    The high energy use in the European building stock is attributable to the large share of old buildings with poor energy performance. Energy renovation of buildings is therefore vital in the work towards energy efficiency and reduced environmental impact in the EU. Yet, the strategies and energy system implications of this work have not been made clear, and the rate of building renovation is currently very low.

    The aim of this thesis is to investigate the economic and environmental aspects of energy renovation strategies, with two main objectives:

    • Renovation of Swedish district heated multi-family houses, including life-cycle cost and environmental analysis and impact on the local energy system;

    • Renovation of European residential and office buildings, including life-cycle cost and environmental analysis and influence of climatic conditions.

    Buildings typical for the respective regions and the period of construction 1945-1970 were simulated, in order to determine the feasibility and energy saving potential of energy renovation measures in European climates. A variety of systems for heating, cooling and ventilation were studied, as well as solar energy systems, with focus on heat pumps, district heating, low-temperature heating systems and air heat recovery.

    Compared to normal building renovation, energy renovation can often reduce the life-cycle costs and environmental impact. In renovation of typical European office buildings, as well as Southern European multi-family houses, more ambitious renovation levels can also be more profitable.

    Exhaust air heat pumps can be cost-effective complements in district heated multi-family houses, while ventilation with heat recovery is more expensive but also more likely to reduce the primary energy use. From a system perspective, simple exhaust ventilation can reduce the primary energy use in the district-heating plant as much as an exhaust air heat pump, due to the lower electricity use.

    For each newly produced house, an energy calculation will be made inthe production state and after the building has started to be used, ameasurement will form the basis for the energy declaration. This isdone to make demands on the energy consumption of the house, inorder to reach the targets by 2020 and 2050.There are many different methods for calculating energy consumption.In this report, two energy calculation programs will be compared andlook at how the energy usage responds to the solar radiation in thedifferent methods. A hand calculation will be made to validate if theenergy usage level is reasonable.The two programs are TMF Energy and IDA Indoor Climate andEnergy (IDA ICE). The calculations are made on a standard housefrom the house supplier Fiskarhedenvillan.The method is based on having the same conditions and inputs in thedifferent methods, so that the results can be compared and see howthey differ from one another. The house will be placed differently tosee how the orientation affects the energy consumption.The results for the simulations are close to each other and the handcalculation differs from the programs. Even if solar factors change inthe different computer programs, results can be matched to form apattern. The same patterns can be seen in the hand calculation, but witha greater deviation.

    What happens when an elderly person wants to sell the property and move on to somethingthat is easier to handle? Are there opportunities for older people to live in the same city asbefore? What opportunities are there for elderly people who want to move to a smallerresidence? Can a concept be drawn up just for this assignment?This degree project will address the problem of how elderly people face a challenge to get toa simpler accommodation that is more suited to the elderly for functional and maintenancepurposes. The thesis is based on an ongoing project that takes place in Norr Amsberg, a smalltown three kilometer north of Borlänge.In this degree project, a qualitative method will be used which means no calculations isneeded. Thus, facts will be gathered from interviews, research articles and statistics.Six people have been interviewed during this project. Those who have been interviewed aretwo scientists who are stationed in Falun, three older people who have passed sixty-five yearsof ages and finally the enthusiast who started whole project in Norr Amsberg. This provides abroad ground for the conclusions drawn in the report.A concept house has been drawn up during this time, taking account of the wishes of theinterviewees as appearance, functional requirements and location. The house has allaccessibility requirements that a modern home will have. The building that is produced is aconcept and not the finished product.Important conclusions that have been made during this study are how important the housingdesign is and how it affects the elderly significantly more than is generally believed and thatthe need will increase significantly in terms of custom housing in the future. The importanceof housing design and how it affects older people are some major key factors that allmunicipalities learn to address when planning a type of "senior housing" for elderly people.

    Abstract [en]

    Climate change is a fact. The amplified greenhouse effect threatens to destroy both plant- and animal life if no actions are made. One of the main matters in the Paris agreement is to keep the global warming under 2 degree Celsius but with the ambition to keep it under 1, 5 degree Celsius. To make this possible requires actions and methods to ensure a reductions of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Carbon footprint calculation is a tool that can be used to see the total emissions from a project, but also to see specific materials emissions.

    The intention with this thesis is to establish a carbon footprint calculation for a apartment building in Borlänge county. By using the carbon footprint calculations identify the projects total emissions and compare the top two emission materials with other materials. The comparison is made in the product stage (A1-A3). The results shows that 38 % of the total emissions comes from concreate and 11% from reinforcing bars. Together they make up 49 % of the total emissions from the project. The concreate was compared with Skanskas Green concreate and the reinforcing bars was compared with bars from Celsa Steel Service. To exchange both concreate and reinforcing bars to more climate friendly materials would mean a lowering of the emissions with 1% in the product stage.

    By exchange some of the cement to dross, in the concreate, the emissions of greenhouse gases from it can be cut in half. Even after a significant increase of the concreates solidity it could be established that the green concreate still had less emissions of greenhouse gases than the original concreate. Together with the reinforcing bars, which are made of junk and renewably energy, it is possible to contribute to a lowering of greenhouse gases by the constructionand real estate sector. The instrument ECO2, which was used to establish the carbon footprint calculation, is a good tool to identify materials with high emissions in the early stage. This grant a possibility to locate and change these materials with high emissions of greenhouse gases.

    This thesis has contributed to creating a understanding for what crucial factors the handling of materials and the manufacturing of materials to lower the emissions of greenhouse gases. The conclusion of the thesis proves the importance of being aware in the early stage of which materials have the most emissions and if they can be replaced by something better. By replacing one or two materials it is possible to lower the emissions of greenhouse gases considerably which had contributed in the quest to reach climate neutrality by 2045.

    Abstract [en]

    Stone dust exists in all road and public work projects yet the knowledge about how dangerous exposure to the respirable quartz particles that stone dust contains is lower than what could be preferred. The respirable quartz can cause silicosis and lung cancer as well as heart diseases when the capacity of the lungs is reduced. The purpose of this project was to investigate if there is sufficient information and knowledge about quartz in stone dust in this business today. The purpose was also to realize whether there are quartz-prohibiting measures, such as the usage of breathing aid, taken or not. Because of the time-limit of this project much of the gathering of information was limited to “Skanska AB väg och anläggning, region mitt”.

    A survey was produced and used as a method in order to get information about the level of knowledge that Skanska employees have, as well as how good Skanska is at informing their employees, about quartz. This survey was sent to all of Skanska Sweden’s staff members in road and public works, central region. In addition to this, interviews were held with supervisors and managers in the same region. The survey results revealed that most employees have some sort of knowledge about quartz but that the information should be made more extensive and be repeated more often. The results also show that the usage of personal breathing aid is inadequate, this is because the aid is hard to breathe through and during long and warm days they’re an annoyance to wear. In addition, it was also brought to light that not everyone who needs a breathing aid have access to one.

    As another result of the survey and the interviews a guide was made. This guide was formed as a helping hand for the staff management when they’re making risk evaluations and work preparations but also as a short information for all staff members to make it easier for them to remember the easiest and most efficient ways to avoid and protect yourself from quartz particles.

    In the discussion the possibilities about lowering the hygienic limits of quartz for different parts of the economy was debated. A lowering of the hygienic limit in road and public works should lead to more work, such as this, being done towards a better work environment. The knowledge about how personal health is affected by respirable quartz can always get better and that goes especially for employees that work in direct contact with stone dust.

    The conclusions of this project were that employees that are exposed to stone dust should be informed more often, preferably before the start of every project, and also the need for personal breathing aid with appurtenant education should be attended to. Furthermore, the work preparations made with every risk evaluation should always be made by staff members with the same qualifications and information. Thus, all work preparations will look consistent and also, the creation of them will be more time efficient.

    Abstract [en]

    The European Union aims to reduce energy use and CO2-emissions by 40 % by the year 2030. The building sector has been identified as having a great potential to reduce emission of CO2 by increasing its energy efficiency. Also, there is a growing concern of the buildings environmental performance, that lead to the development of building environmental assessment tools. However, different types of energy sources and confusing environmental impacts affect the decision making when renovating for improved energy efficiency. This study develops and tests a methodology to help decision-makers when considering major renovation of their building stock when connected to adistrict heating system. The proposed methodology is applied and used to investigate how different renovation scenarios affects the building environmental impacts in terms of CO2 emissions and identify and discuss future improvements of the methodology.

    The novelty of the method is the expanded system boundaries that include both the distribution and production of district heating and the energy use at a building level. In this way it is possible to compare and weight measures made both at the energy system level and the building level. This work has limited its approach to energy use in buildings, but it is important to bring the life cycle thinking to the methodology. During the choice of the renovation methods it was noticed that the environmental impact of the production of some components in order to reduce the energy use of a building are not insignificant. Even if all the renovation measures considered in this case study are feasible, it is important to determine in which order they are desirable or achievable from an economic point of view. Uncertainty in the future development of energy, and limited economic resources can play an important role in the possibility of energy efficient renovation.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this study is to assess how different renovation scenarios affect the environmental and economic impacts of a multi-dwelling building in a Nordic climate, how these aspects are correlated and how different energy carriers affect different environmental impact categories. In order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the European Union has set an agenda in order to reduce energy use in buildings. New buildings on the European market have a low replacement rate, which makes building renovation an important factor for achieving the European Union goals. In this study, eight renovation strategies were analyzed following the European Committee for Standardization standards for life cycle assessment and life cycle costs of buildings. This study covers all life cycle steps from cradle to grave. The renovation scenarios include combinations of photovoltaics, geothermal heat pumps, heat recovery ventilation and improved building envelopes. Results show that, depending on the energy carrier, reductions in global warming potential can be achieved at the expense of an increased nuclear waste disposal. It also shows that for the investigated renovation strategies in Sweden there is no correlation between the economic and the environmental performance of the building. Changing energy carriers in Sweden in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions can be a good alternative, but it makes the system more dependent on nuclear power.

    Abstract [en]

    A problem in today's modern society is that the noise levels are too high. These high levels of noise is a health hazard and can give man permanent damage. Noise pollution is something that must not be neglected.

    The purpose of this study is to identify and map the noise on Holmgatan in central Falun. The purpose is also to analyze the results and put them in relation with the regulatory requirements and guidelines regarding noise levels and to analyze the results and see if actions should be taken against the noise on Holmgatan.

    The thesis is limited to noise measurements and mapping of parts of Holmgatan, considered to be especially vulnerable to noise. Noise measurements were conducted during four weekdays and during times from when most stores open to most of them then closing, at. 10-18.

    The method consisted of noise measurements which were performed at hourly intervals along the selected portion of Holmgatan. The days on which these measurements were performed was from 2/12 to 5/12-2013.

    The results are reported as average value per hour of any day on which noise measurements were made. The results varied, the lowest average noise was 57 dB and the highest average noise was 83 dB. It is clearly seen that the higher values are closer to a street used by buses and other transport vehicles. The lower values were generally near Geislerka parken, which is a large garden, an open area in the middle of Holmgatan. Overall, the average noise values were between 60-65 dB.

    The conclusion suggests that the noise level at Holmgatan do not exceed regulatory requirements on what is considered as harmful but it is just below the guidelines for the maximum level of outdoor noise (70 dB). Actions such as planting vegetation on the facades and to redirect the traffic could be done to reduce noise levels at Holmgatan.

    Abstract [en]

    The study aim to examine how Sweden's existing housing stock needs to adapt to achieve the objectives and agreements signed to counteract climate change as well as, what specific measures should be prioritized in order to achieve the objectives within the set timeframe. To answer the purpose, the study has used theoretical and real objects where extensive energy savings have been performed. This potential has been applied to the entire housing stock and its environmental impact has been calculated.The study focused on the category of single-family homes and apartment buildings. The results showed that when all renovation measures were applied, greenhouse gas emissions fell by 88% from 1990 years, energy efficiency increased by 47% from 2016 years, and the share of renewable energy was considered to continue to increase. The proportion of fossil fuels was relatively large 1990 for heating homes and hot water that were phased out to more environmentally friendly alternatives over time. This meant that 2016 was the housing stock were significantly below the targets set for greenhouse gas emissions for years 2020 and 2030 i.e. The targets were already fulfilled in 2016. However, the target for 2050 was set at a reduction of at least 80%, which meant that all the measures for reducing energy consumption in the study needed to be used to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to set targets.The study shows that all the goals that Sweden has adopted can be achieved or achieve great improvement as all of the study's energy saving and carbon reduction proposals are implemented.

    Abstract [en]

    Boverkets design rules, BKR, containing regulations and general advice on constructions ended in 2011. They were replaced by Eurocodes (EK), the new regulations for dimensioning constructions. Eurocode was introduced because it provides better quality in the Swedish construction market and will lead to fewer misunderstandings. The previous regulations, BKR, were not as complicated in the calculation process as compared to the European Standard, Eurocode 5. The calculation process with EK5 has become a longer process and is more time consuming. In order for a construction to function as a system, it is important that the structural parts are joined together well. It does in so called nodes, where connections transmit the working forces of the structure. The purpose of the thesis work is to make a calculation template in Microsoft Excel to Ramböll AB. This is to simplification process for the calculation of Eurocod 5 with wood screw connections. A dimensioning of the template will be performed on two types connection with woodscrew, where output and time will be compared to hand calculation, the method most commonly used by Ramböll. The work will be based on interviews and literature studies from books and reports in connection with wood screws. This is done to gain a better understanding of the subject area. A case study will then be performed between calculation methods hand calculation and dimensioning template. A dimensioning template has been developed in Microsoft Excel according to Rambölls needs. Dimensioning with the template and hand calculation has been carried out and compared to find out the time and dimensions of bearing capacity with both methods. The conclusion of this project is that a dimensioning template is possible to design in Excel. It also shortens the timeframe in the design process considerably due to the fast input you can make in the template.

    Tidiga skeden är avgörande för huruvida ett byggprojekt blir framgångsrikt eller inte. Brister i kommunikation och samverkan har flaggats som några av de problem som förekommer inom branschen och forskningen slår fast att förhållningsregler för dessa två faktorer bör fastställas i ett tidigt skede. Trots att tidiga skeden har stor inverkan på byggprocessen är denna i mindre omfattning utforskad än senare skeden. Denna forskningslucka motiverar att undersöka även detidiga skedena. Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka projektledares upplevelser av startskedet i byggprojekt och specifikt avseende kommunikation och samarbete och även fastställa vilka metoder för möten och riskanalyser i tidigt skede som kan leda till ökad måluppfyllnad. Vidare har användametoder för samarbete och kommunikationer observerats och analyserats. Studien genomfördes på en mindre projektledningsfirma i Mellansverige där fem projektledare intervjuades enligt semistruktureradmodell. Resultatet visar att den befintliga forskning och litteratur om tidiga skeden som finns stämmer överens med den bild som speglas av intervjuerna. Projektledarna anser att brist på tid i tidiga skeden är en vanlig orsak till fel tillsammans med frånvaron av mål alternativt otydligt formulerade mål. Användandet av en kommunikatör eller facilitator ansågs kunna ha positiv inverkan på projekt men används i dagsläget sparsamt och lokalisering av intressenter i byggprojektses som en stor utmaning i stora organisationer. Vidare upplevs det föreligga frustration över svårigheten att ordentligt fastställa behovet och lokalisera alla som kan tänkas påverkas av intressenter i byggprojektet. Studien har gett en fördjupad bild av några projektledares syn på tidiga skeden. Slutsatsen av studien visar på vikten av att arbeta mer omfattande med de tidiga skeden, i synnerhet med mål, för att byggprojektet skall bli mer framgångsrikt och effektivt samt och även minimera felaktigheter. Kommunikation och samarbete spelar en viktig roll i detta arbete och i förlängningen på slutprodukten.

    Abstract [en]

    Recently, solar system has gained a rapid development in many countries because it is clean and sustainable. Many solar systems including the solar photovoltaic/loop-heat-pipe (PV/LHP), solar loop-heat-pipe (LHP), solar photovoltaic/micro-channel heat pipe (PV/MCHP) system, and solar thermal facade system (STF) have been designed for energy saving. To assess these systems’ performance, there are many approaches such as energy and exergy assessment which is used in this chapter to analyze their performance. Besides the system design, the authors set up dedicated experimental models in combination with computer models to test the systems’ performance. Furthermore, some systems are compared with the conventional system, and the performance of these solar systems is better than the conventional system. In addition, these solar systems are applied in many real buildings and their performance is examined, the results show that the solar systems have more potential to boost the building energy efficiency and create the possibility of solar development in buildings. © 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

    Abstract [en]

    A new planning- and building act was applied the 2nd may 2011. The intention was to simplify the planning- and building process as the control of constructing where tightened. In the new act there has been introduced a deadline for the building permits of ten weeks. To be allowed to begin the constructing you will need a starting clearance. The clearance is preceded by a technical consultation.

    The purpose of this study was to survey if the technical consultation is performed equivalent between different municipalities in the county of Dalarna. Other purposes was:

     To create a basis for improvement regarding the technical consultation.

     Examine how to facilitate or improve the consultation.

     Illustrate why the technical consultation is so important in the building process.

     Clarify the differences in the new and the old act regarding the consultation.

    To understand what a technical consultation is and how it should be performed the work began with a literature study. A literature study was also performed to pick a method for the work. These studies resulted in a method based on the semi-structured interview form. A number of interviews were conducted in five building committees in Dalarnas County. To study the technical consultation in practice a visit during a consultation were conducted at Mora – Orsa and Falun municipalities.

    This thesis was delimited to examining how technical consultation is performed and works in various building committees in Dalarnas county. The work was delimited to only process opinions from building inspectors and a control manager.

    The results have been compiled and are reported in the results chapter. All respondents in this thesis have the opinion that complete documentation is essential to carry out a technical consultation. The developer should be well-informed and familiar with the project and an experienced developer could simplify the building process. A technical consultation is of great importance to ensure that the society’s conditions upholds. It is particularly important to hold a consultation when the developer is inexperienced.
