    Sweco Civil är ett företag som bland annat arbetar med att besikta broar åt Trafikverket. När en besiktning av en bro görs vill man ta reda på om den håller för trafikflödet. För att kunna räkna ut om den håller behövs kännedom om brons armeringstyp, cc-mått samt tjocklek i underkant av bron och i brons stöd. Idag bilar man fram armeringen i betongen och detta tar både tid och skadar bron. I denna rapport har en ny metod för att ta reda på armeringen i betongen testats. Den nya metoden består av att använda sig av en maskin vid namn C-thrue ifrån IDS georadar. Maskinen använder sig av elektrisk polarisation för att hitta armeringen i betongen. Det maskinen scannar fram projekteras på en bild som sedan tolkas. Maskinen prövades först på en bro där armerings ritningarna analyserades innan mätningarna. Efter att mätarna visste hur mätningarna skulle tolkas prövades maskinen på två andra broar där mätarna inte fick information från armeringsritningarna förens efter mätningarna. Maskinen fungerade bra för att mäta cc-mått på mindre broar men när broarna blev större och mer armering var placerad i underkant av bron blev mätresultaten för svåra att tolka för att kunna få ut ett cc-mått. Maskinen kunde inte heller med precision visa armeringens diameter eller typ.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

    Today we have become increasingly dependent of our digital portable

    devices and constantly bring these with us. So, it goes without saying,

    we should adapt newsletters to this reality and not let the design be based

    on more traditional, stationary devices. The adaptation of how a interface

    should work is controlled by which audience you are targeting. In this

    project, we have worked with Sveriges MotorCyklisters members as target

    group.

    This target group consists of men to the larger part and at a age of 41-65

    years. Through a combination of a qualitative and a quantitative survey

    we have been able to create examples of guidelines for functionality and

    overview, directed towards the target group. The results show that they

    prefer a simple design that is easy to navigate and do not consist of too

    much irrelevant information and that easily leads on from headlines to

    articles. It is important to the group that there are clear, distinct and large

    buttons and texts which are customizable with a high degree of readability,

    regardless of which device the material presented on. All of these

    data were collected from surveys and interviews with members of SMC.

    Four-dimensional concurrent engineering - an extended theoretical framework integrating packaging2019Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    This paper takes on the challenge to integrate packaging in a concept of four-dimensional concurrent engineering (4DCE). The purpose is to explore a conceptual model and empirically evaluate the specific performance of packaging in interrelation with product and processes in the Supply Chain (SC). The objectives are to better understand the concepts of packaging logistics and logistics management in the SC. The conceptual model 4DCE is developed based on the three-dimensional concurrent engineering theories.The tool Packaging Scorecard is applied to evaluate the concurrent performance of packaging throughout the SC. The packaging system involves many actors that are integrated into the 4DCE framework with focus on interaction of SC and logistics in relation to packaging and product, with the overall aim to operate as effectively and efficiently as possible. In order to explore the potential of the 4DCE framework, empirical verification and testing of the concept has been carried out. The process has been done through multiple in-depth, action-oriented case studies in three different industries on the Swedish market. The case studies covered holistic aspects on the packaging system.The concept 4DCE contributes to packaging logistics theory by providing a framework for assessment incorporating complex and dynamic interactions between product, packaging, logistics and SC. Furthermore, the holistic packaging development concept is ensured by increasing knowledge of the packaging system and how it interacts with actors and performs to fulfil requirements along the SC. The 4DCE provides valuable data for packaging development processes in the cases, however there is a need for broader studies in different industries.

    Abstract [en]

    User interface design is a big part of a websites impression and changes quickly

    with new technology and design trends. But it is also necessary to attract the

    right users. How does a website attract their target audience?

    The goal with this thesis was to analyse gamers, as a target audience, to see how

    they perceive the graphical user interface on a gaming-related website. The

    thesis will also briefly touch on the current trends in web design, and if they are

    appealing to gamers.

    The study was conducted in two stages. The first stage examined the user

    interfaces of 20 of the most popular gaming-websites. During stage two, a

    quantitative survey and a few interviews was conducted. Both the survey and

    the interview asked the respondents to choose between different

    implementations of user interface elements on a fictitious website mock-up.

    There was a significant difference in the studied graphical user interfaces and

    what the gamers preferred. For example, only 25% of the analysed webpages

    was dark, while 71.9% of the respondents in the survey preferred the darker

    user interface.

    Sandwichkonstruktioner används för att tillverka många olika produkter och konstruktionerna har hög hållfasthet och låg vikt. Företaget Dala Laminat tillverkar och säljer sådana konstruktioner. Nu vill de bredda sin marknad och börja tillverka hus. De har tagit fram konstruktioner till en 1,5-plansvilla och vill testa dessa i ett attefallshus. I detta examensarbete ska en ritningssats till attefallshuset tas fram. Syftet med arbetet är att se till att kundens önskemål i möjligaste mån uppfylls och att tillämpliga lagkrav och bestämmelser följs för attefallshuset samt att ta fram ritningar. Handlingarna ska kunna användas direkt i Dala Laminats fabriker för att tillverka de element som behövs för att bygga huset. Det finns lagar och regler som gäller för attefallshus, dessa handlar bland annat om måttbestämmelser kopplade till borttaget krav av bygglov. Det finns även bestämmelser vad gäller installationer i ett hus som måste följas. Arbetet gjordes som en fallstudie. Det var viktigt att Dala Laminat hela tiden granskades och sågs mer som en beställare än som en källa. Referenser vad gäller husbyggsatser och sammanfogningsmetoder presenterades och granskades. Även Dala Laminats konstruktioner och företagets produktionsförutsättningar presenterades. Därefter förde slutkunden fram sina önskemål om attefallshusets utformning och funktioner. Baserat på dessa förutsättningar och krav togs kompletta ritningar över attefallshuset fram. Eftersom attefallshuset ännu inte är byggt är det svårt att veta hur det kommer att fungera i praktiken även om alla regler och bestämmelser har följts. Sammanfogningarna valdes att göras som förslag i och med den låga erfarenheten av materialet. Sandwichkonstruktioner är ett komplicerat material att räkna på i teorin. Dock är det ett enkelt material i praktiken vad gäller att tillverka och hantera. En felkälla i arbetet är de tolkningar som gjorts vid granskningen av arbetets referenser. Metoden för hur byggsatsen har gjorts kan tillämpas för många olika slags byggsatser. Eftersom inga tidigare studier i ämnet påträffades kommer arbetet att bidra med kunskap i ämnet.

    Borlänge Bandy is a sports association based in Borlänge. Before this work took place they had no visual identity. To help Borlänge Bandy create better perception, a visual identity was created. The goal was to create a visual identity supported by the target group’s views. To investigate the target group's opinions on Borlänge Bandy’s visual appearance several surveys was conducted. These formed the basis for a renewal of Borlänge Bandy’s logotype. Material to the visual identity was analyzed in a focus group. This then led to an updated version of the logotype along with graphic material. An evaluative focus group then checked that the goal had been achieved. The result was a new visual identity with associated graphic identity manual to Borlänge Bandy that contains information about typography, colors, logotype, visual identity imagery, correspondence materials, business products and graphic elements. If the graphic material is handled with consistency it will create recognition. The conclusions were that the new visual identity is perceived as unified, harmonious, and related throughout the manual.

    Abstract [en]

    These days, sexism and gender discrimination get a lot of attention in

    advertisement. They take a lot of space in both social media and everyday life.

    Regarding gender discrimination, women are the ones who are more often

    exposed to being objectified or portrayed in a stereotypical manner that might

    lead to a public debate, while in the last couple of years it is noticeable that

    similar cases with men involved has increased.

    The purpose of this study is to examine and map out the execution of gender

    discrimination in Swedish ads, and compile and compare to discover what tells

    the condemned and cleared cases apart. Reklamombudsmannens criteria’s for

    gender discriminating ads will be the point of departure when evaluating the

    material, as with defining the categories for the analysis.

    In both condemned and cleared cases, the execution of the image and the

    models was the most relevant reason to report or condemn an ad for being

    gender discriminating. The result shows that the incidence of objectifying ads

    get more attention and is more often condemned than standardization in ads.

    Along with this, ads containing models that are showing more skin not

    necessarily being the most condemned since they had a connection to the

    product being sold.

    The ethics on pictures in advertising have been widely discussed, especiallymodel, and product photographs have been criticized. There seems to be ashortage of research on acceptance of image processing of landscapephotographs that are often used in advertisements for tourist destinations. Aweb survey with example pictures was conducted to examine what level ofimage processing was deemed life like, appealing and acceptable in those kindsof advertisements. The conclusion was that photographs where the exposurehad been corrected to create a clearer picture was the most acceptable.Differences in opinions between ages, genders and those with or withoutprevious experience about image processing were discussed and it showedthat women were slightly more critical to image processing. Those withprevious experience were generally more okay with image processing. Someviewers accept further processing if it is done to sell a specific feeling and doesnot make the viewer feel mislead.

    Examensarbetet behandlar på begäran av Fiskarhedenvillan AB hur hållbar arkitektur och byggteknik kan tillämpas i ett småhus om 10 år samt om hållbarhetskrav då kan ha förändrat villautformningen. Arbetet avgränsades och syftade till att behandla fem områden: framtida byggkrav med synpunkt på tillämpning av LCA, energieffektiva installationer och tekniska lösningar, kretslopp, materialval samt inomhusklimatets påverkan på människan. Metoden baserades på en kvalitativ studie där datainsamling genomfördes med dokumentinsamlingsmetodik i form av fallstudier från litteratur, semistrukturerade intervjuer med öppna frågor, avhandlingar, tidskrifter, data från utförda undersökningar samt databaser. Informationen sammanställdes i rapporten utifrån en subjektiv bedömning. Studien resulterade i ett konkret förslag på en villautformning samt påvisade att det idag tas alltför liten hänsyn till jordens ekologiska system vid konsumtionen av dess ändliga råvaror. Människan måste förändra sin livsstil. Med avseende på det har frågor och medvetenhet kring byggnaders energianvändning och miljöanpassning på senare år ökat. Den ökade medvetenheten gör att allt fler väljer att miljöcertifiera sina byggnader. Det finns olika miljöcertifieringar exempelvis Svanencertifiering, men indikatorerna bygger på samma grundtanke, att skapa en hållbar byggnad som inte påverkar miljön mer än nödvändigt. Ett mindre utforskat område är den totala klimatpåverkan en byggnad utgör under hela dess livslängd och här behöver aktörer inom byggsektorn öka sin kunskap. Något som kan göras genom användande av livscykelanalyser och klimatdeklarationer i projekteringsfasen. Enligt Boverket kommer regeringen även inom kort att ställa högre krav på tillämpning av just dessa verktyg vid uppförande av nybyggnation. För att minska energibehov samt skapa en behaglig och trivsam inomhusmiljö i energieffektiva byggnader behöver kunskapen för de installationstekniska delarna höjas inom byggsektorn.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this study is to introduce a new S-shaped hazard function, derive its corre-

    sponding likelihood function and then apply it to a real dataset to show advantages of

    such method. We dened an inovative S-shaped hazard function based on arctangent

    with three additional parameters. Our hazard function opens new possibilities for the

    measurement of the lock-in e ect directly using one of its parameters. Its signicance is

    further tested by a standard Wald test. We derive a log-likelihood function and apply

    it on a data from Volvo Cars Project. According to our results we conclude that the

    program was unsuccessful. Surprising shapes of nal hazard functions lead us to closer

    examination of possible limitations. We conclude that our results could be a ected

    by several aspects such as data quality, computational methods and possible violation

    of independency assumption. Nevertheless, this study works as a useful summary of

    the newly-dened S-shaped hazard function and highlights its innovative possibility to

    estimate lock-in e ect together with its signicance testing.

    Abstract [en]

    Antivirus Software Companies have seen a lot of development over the last decennary, beginning with the signature-based scanners and then slowly implementing more advanced heuristics techniques. Most of these have shown their ability to scan files stored on the hard drive and also opcodes in memory. As of date, most antivirus detection technologies used are; signature-based detection and heuristic-based detection. Malware signatures work by creating checksum hashes of known suspect files, so the smallest change prevents a match. Sometimes hackers and malicious users try finding ways around signatures and bypass signature-based detections by modifying existing malware with a few harmless strings to throw off signature based detection. I propose a project which aims to study how attackers and malicious codes can identify signatures of malware and modify it without changing its functionality with the aim of avoiding signature-based Antivirus software scanners which do not use heuristics at all. I have used netcat binary files in the reverse engineering process and proved how many antivirus scanner scan be bypassed. I also have used the python tool to create codes. From my experiment, I have proved the futility of the antivirus protection against malware. Through this report, I want to reach out and point out the safety measurements users can take to reduce attacks. I also have ensured that the common users are informed about the antivirus types and how they work. A user must be aware that antivirus software is not a full-proof protection as there are plenty of loopholes the researchers have to point out, but it does not mean the security should be compromised. Through this report, I would also like to highlight the fact that it is the responsibility of the user to follow simple guidelines to ensure protection, and the antivirus developers are responsible for keeping their database up-to-date.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this thesis was to create a graphic profile for the company Lyst Form AB. The company conducts an e-commerce and is selling handcrafted clothes made in natural material.  

    A theoretic part in the thesis studies how a brand can communicate on the internet.

    It’s important that the corporate identity is reflected through the graphic profile. The corporate identity can be explained as the soul of the company and can be seen through all of the graphic material. The graphic profile is a kind of visual identity and it’s containing a logotype, typography and colors for example.

    Several studies were made to reach the aim with the thesis. The target group of the company was important throughout the whole process. A research began with the company and their competitors. A survey was made by the target group to get their opinion about the company and its design. This information gathering gave a good foundation and a guideline in the development of the graphic profile.

    During the design process the proposed logos was discussed using a focus group. The discussion was useful in the process.

    A last survey was made to see if the goal was achieved. The results showed that the newly developed graphic profile was a clear improvement compared to the current from the perspective of corporate identity. The goal of the thesis was achieved.

     The use of looping techniques is today a well established form of solo musicianship but more or less unproven in the context of ensemble performance. In the project “Audio visual Loops” at Universtiy College Dalarna a system was developed to allow collective live looping for up to four people performing together and at the same time as video loops of the performance were created and presented. This technique has a strong creative potential. The collective process starts with just a short introduction and the immediate musical feedback creates a “flow” that quickly brings out the creative potential of the musicians. This expe rience points forward to exciting possibilities for use in music educations and music therapy.

    Abstract [en]

    To distinguish one brand from another, a graphic identity is required. The identity also creates recognition; previous studies show that the consumer would rather choose a brand they recognize over one they do not recognize. The logo is the brands face toward the consumer and one study mentions that an American is exposed to about 16,000 logos, advertisements and labels each day.

    This study aims to present existing advice on the design of the logo and to investigate the extent to which these advices are used. The study also investigates whether there is any association between the logo design and the brand's strength.

    In order to complete the study, a literature search has been made; and based on this, three rating systems have been developed. Then, 74 logos from two ranking lists have been rated by three professional graphic artists.

    The study presents the advices the literature search gave and the advices that was most widely used. The results show that there is no link between the design of the logo and the brand's strength, which indicates that other factors are involved in making a strong brand.

    Abstract [en]

    It’s difficult to say how a B2B web site should be designed to create efficiency,

    but this thesis investigates which guidelines exist as to what content can make a

    website more effective. There are many differences between B2C and B2B

    companies, and one of them is B2B companies' pursuit of a strong and longterm

    relationship with their customers. Using content marketing to create

    content that the company's customers find interesting therefore becomes

    important and effective for B2B companies.

    To investigate what B2B companies websites contain, a small visual content

    analysis was conducted. The survey showed that today's B2B companies need

    to be better at using content marketing that is interesting to their customers

    rather than sharing information about the company's own products and services.

    Good content can be created using case studies, social media and a wellthought-

    out language. It also showed that B2B companies can benefit from

    more personal communication with their customers by for example writing

    topics that the company cares about which create engagement with the

    recipient.

    I Sverige är kunskapen inom BIM (Building Information Modelling) väldigt varierande, i dagsläget tillämpas arbetssättet främst i de större projekten som till exempel E4 förbifart Stockholm där det finns en större budget. I våra grannländer Norge och Finland har utvecklingen kommit något längre eftersom det ställts högre krav från de statliga beställarna. Det primära syftet med projektarbetet är att reda ut hur BIM kan tillämpas i mindre väg- och anläggningsprojekt, och om det kan göras på ett effektivt och lönsamt sätt i tidiga vägplaneskedet, och i andra hand se över möjligheten att utöka användningen av BIM i ett tidigt vägplaneskede för en GC-väg mellan Tolsbo och Tunet. Metoderna för arbetet bestod främst av litteraturstudier och intervjuer med personer både inom och utanför företaget, tillsammans med programvaruleverantörer och personer från beställarsidan. Metoderna fungerade bra och gav tillförlitliga svar men gav inte det resultat som förväntades i vissa fall. En viktig slutsats med detta arbete är att arbetet med BIM är i en stark utvecklingsfas men att det finns brister i kunskap på beställarsidan, då de inte alltid förstår fördelarna som BIM kan ge in i underhåll och förvaltningsskedet av vägarna.     Det här examensarbetet handlar om riktpriset i ECI projekt samt krav på BIM modeller avseende detaljeringsnivåer. Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) är en relativt ny samverkansmodell i Sverige som används av Trafikverket i ett fåtal väldigt stora infrastrukturprojekt. ECI består av två faser och går ut på att beställaren samverkar med entreprenören i ett tidigt skede, fas 1, där entreprenörens kompetens och erfarenhet är värdefull redan i planeringen. Om beställare och entreprenör kommer överens om den ungefärliga kostnaden, riktpriset, för att utföra arbetet enligt fas 1, får entreprenören också utföra arbetet som en totalentreprenad i fas 2. BIM är en viktig pusselbit för framgång i ECI-projekt och kan förbättra samverkan mellan olika aktörer och team i projekteringen. Informationen i modeller kan lätt flyttas mellan team och användas för att förkorta beslutsprocesser. Syftet med examensarbetet är att undersöka vilken detaljeringsnivå i modeller som är nödvändig för ECI-projektets första fas (riktprisfasen), samt undersöka hur Trafikverket ställer krav på BIM och modellers detaljeringsnivåer. Studien genomfördes genom att göra en jämförelse av erhållet riktpris för två brandsläckningssystem med olika detaljeringsnivå (LOD200 och LOD300) i en tunnelmodell. Studien avgränsar sig till endast bruttokostnader för material såsom rör, rörkopplingar och ventiler. Undersökningen visade utifrån mängdförteckningen att riktpriset för modellen med högre detaljeringsnivå (LOD 300) är 95% större än för den lägre nivån (LOD 200). I modellen med LOD 200 beräknades riktpriset enbart på rören vilket gjorde en stor skillnad jämfört med LOD 300 där riktpriset beräknades på rören, rörkopplingar och ventiler. Utifrån det kan slutsatsen dras att en modell med detaljeringsgrad LOD 200 inte innehåller tillräckligt med information för att kunna prissättas utan alltför stor prisavvikelse och risk.

    Estimated lifetimes of road pavements in Sweden using time-to-event analysis2013Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    Maintenance planning of road pavement requires reliable estimates of roads’ lifetimes. In determining the lifetime of a road, this study combines maintenance activities and road condition measurements. The scope of the paper is to estimate lifetimes of road pavements in Sweden with time to event analysis. The model used includes effects of pavement type, road type, bearing capacity, road width, speed limit, stone size and climate zone, where the model is stratified according to traffic load. Among the nine analyzed pavement types, stone mastic had the longest expected lifetime, 32 percent longer than asphalt concrete. Among road types, ordinary roads with cable barriers had 30 percent shorter lifetime than ordinary roads. Increased speed lowered the lifetime, while increased stone size (up to 20 mm) and increased road width lengthened the lifetime. The results are of importance for life cycle cost analysis and road management.

    A serendipitous journey into blended learning: A tale of three tools: How tools for online learning became tools for blended learning2014Conference paper (Refereed)

    Our presentation deals with how the needs of both students and teachers drive Dalarna University's development of blended learning and how the implementation of campus-based as well as online education has converged. The target audience includes teachers, educational developers, developers of educational technology and university management.

    We would like to present some of our experiences with blended learning. From our perspective, there is little difference between the needs of campus-based students and those of online students. We have learned that online courses offer new possibilities as well as challenges. What we have gained from our experiences in overcoming these challenges is now helping to systematically benefit and improve campus-based education as well. Our efforts have improved, increased and promoted blended learning despite the fact that blended learning was not our original goal. To illustrate this, we would like to highlight three specific examples of tools that facilitate blended learning that are currently used by students and teachers.

    At the turn of the millennium, the number of students registering for campus-based courses had declined to such a level that there were not enough students to justify our offering a number of courses. These campus-based courses were at risk of being canceled and for some of these subjects this would have meant layoffs of academic staff. Some of the language subjects taught at Dalarna University then began to offer courses online - the online courses were a success. These positive experiences led to an increased focus on online education as a way for us to reach new groups of students. Campus-based students realized that there were benefits to taking courses online. Online students had, for example, access to recorded lectures and the campus-based students wanted this option; as well. The teachers did not find a good reason to keep the campus and online students separate; thus began the development of blended learning at Dalarna University. Online education turned out to be a good choice for the university, as today 68% of our students attend courses online. We offer courses in 11 languages at a time when most Swedish universities have reduced the number of languages courses they offer.

    According to the socio-cultural perspective on learning, communicative interaction and the use of cultural artifacts are important elements of all learning (Säljö, 2000). Dalarna University currently has a number of computer-based systems that support learning. When our teachers decided to start teaching online, they needed to have access to tools that met their needs and allowed them to accomplish their pedagogical goals. Therefore, Dalarna University has consciously chosen to invest in tools that efficiently support learning and that are user-friendly rather than tools that simply use the latest technology. The basis of good teaching is that teaching and learning must always come first. "Good teaching may overcome a poor choice of technology, but technology will never save bad teaching"(Bates, 2005: 221).

    The university has chosen to dedicate significant resources for adepartment that provides support to both teachers and students, on and off campus, in dealing with educational issues in a digital environment. The department also provides support to teachers and students through the development and adaptation of digital tools. The basic thesis is that the environment should be supportive of, not a barrier to, teaching and learning. The support is there because we want to make learning possible (Ramsden 1992/2003). Dalarna University has become known for the use of live lectures via a proprietary system and web-based seminars on a large scale. The tools that were originally used only in online courses are nowalso used in campus-based courses in a blended learning context.

    We currently offer lectures that students can attend either on campus or from home. We have seminars in which campus and online students are blended together in the same seminar groups and we work with classroom response systems to facilitate active student engagement for both campus and online students. Dalarna University broadcasts over 3500 hours of classroom content a year through our proprietary system "Videochat".

    Today, we no longer see flexible learning options as simply a way to increase enrollment, but rather as a way to increase the quality of our work. A survey conducted at Dalarna University in 2012 showed that the "Satisfaction" index (CSI) was significantly higher among online students (73) than campus-based students (62). This could suggest that online teaching has further strengths and values that one should identify and incorporate into all types of teaching.

    We strive for a learning environment where the difference between the experience of online and campus-based education is no longer significant and where the tools that support student learning are used regardless of the form.

The core problem of such acomplex body of data is that the analysis requiresefficient tools and/or methods to match the datacomplexity. The current case regards a participatorystudy on film editing, its method and datacomplexity, and discusses analytical approaches.

    Byggbranschen står inför en stor utmaning för att bidra till en mer hållbar utveckling för att minska klimatpåverkan. I detta arbete undersöks möjligheten att bygga flexibla småhus som ett led i att bidra till minskad energiåtgång genom att maximera småhusens användning och bygga dem så energisnålt som möjligt, med miljövänliga material. Att redan i projekteringsfasen planera för småhusets framtid och ge det chansen att kunna byggas om efter människors ändrade behov, gör att huset kan användas längre utan att rivas eller stå tomt. Projektet mynnar ut i ett förslag på typhus åt småhusföretaget Dalahus som efterfrågar ett just ett flexibelt småhus. Huset är planerat för att kunna byggas ut i framtiden om det finns behov av ett större hus. Detta typhus kan användas som inspiration åt företagets kunder när de ska välja vilken typ av hus de ska bygga.
