    Background: Hamstring strength is important for a reduced risk of injury. JN Hamstringtest is a new test prototype intended for evaluation of the hamstring strength during a rehabilitation and for preventive purpose. It is of interest to explore how this test method works when measuring the strength balance in hamstring muscles and strength ratio between hamstrings- and quadriceps muscles, since this is considered to reduce the risk of injury.

    Aim: The aim of the study was to describe how JN Hamstringtest serves as a method for measuring eccentric, concentric and isometric hamstring strength.

    Method: An exploratory descriptive study. A heterogeneous group consisting of seven physically active participants performed tests for maximum isometric strength in hamstrings- and quadriceps muscles and maximum dynamic strength in the hamstrings muscles in JN Hamstringtest.

    Results: Maximum hamstring strength present a side difference of 9.4 ± 12.4% concentric and 13.3 ± 10.4% eccentric. A significant side difference was present in the eccentric hamstring strength (p = 0.0044), no significant concentric side difference was present (p = 0.13). A strong and significant relationship existed in concentric and eccentric maximum strength between the legs. The H/Q ratio was about 20% bilaterally and there was no significant difference between the legs (p = 0.84). The results of a previous hamstring injured person could not be distinguished from the other participants in this study.

    Conclusion: The result of this study shows that the force transducers in the JN hamstringtest works for measuring dynamic and isometric muscle strength, but it is not possible to ensure a selection of the hamstring muscles during the execution. What is presented in this study is how the strength balance and the strength relationship in the hamstring muscles look at the participants in the JN Hamstringtest. Further research is needed to evaluate the reliability and validity of this method.
